Between the Awakening is the first in a new adult, dark, romantic folk horror trilogy where magic is real, monsters exist, and nightmares come true.
Beneath the hills of Western North Carolina lies an ancient evil, trapped for a millennium. There are many who seek to release it, and only two who can stop them...
Newlyweds Beth and Tom Newman are headed to the Appalachian Mountains for a relaxing weekend with their best friend, Grady Cooper. When the trio arrives, they are unexpectedly met by some old friends. Beth’s excitement soon turns to dread when they end up running for their lives. Her twenty-fifth birthday turned out to be more memorable than she had hoped… in the worst of ways.

For a longer than average book (almost 500 pages), Between the Birches reads really fast. I feel like I finished it in no time because something was always happening, making me turn the pages faster to see what will happen next.
It took me a while to get into the story though, this is mainly due to the writing. It's not bad, but you can tell it's the author's first book. It can only go up from here, so I'm sure the writing will be much better in the sequel.
The plot had a lot of elements I love reading about, from cults, magic, ghosts and spooky forests to a love triangle. And okay, maybe even a dash of soulmates in there too.
I actually liked the story overall, once it really got going. I think the second half was stronger in that regard, especially the ending. Until that point I was on the fence about reading the next book, but the ending really made me exited to give it a try. I feel like the story's just getting started.
The romance was both a hit and a miss, the hit being Grady, the miss Tom. SORRY TOM. He was just...not it. He kept annoying me, and I know everyone would probably be annoying in his shoes but...
My favourite character though, is Fennick. Another huge reason to read the sequel. I don't know what it is about him, but I'm a fan. I'd love it if we got to see more of him in the next books. And you know what else? If I ship anyone with Beth, it's him.
*Thank you to the publishers and Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*
Thanks to BDA publishing for a copy of this to review! Between the Birches is being released in a new edition through them today, March 19th!
This was a chaotic read, and unfortunately, not in a good way. Let me start by saying this could be a good book, just not in its current form, composed as it is of what seem like two separate reads at least and hitting almost 500 pages of just...disparate narrative threads.
The plot moves at a breakneck pace, which for once I didn't love, as things were just kind of happening without explanation or rationality. The reader is abruptly thrown into things; a couple is leaving on a hiking trip with what they think is only one other friend, but it turns out others are joining them, who happen to conduct annual sinister rituals in the woods? Like, the romantic interests know, but let the trip continue as planned; suddenly the people in their party are all wary of each other, and it's going unsaid that our protagonist is the planned sacrifice for the year. Okay.
The romance part was not my jam, offering a couple of my least favorite tropes. It presented soulmate\destined love as part of a love triangle, which began messy, continued to be messy, and ended poorly. I would have preferred a polycule solution TBH, except that the third party was a super jealous and condescending man who wouldn't have been a healthy third.
There was a little too much going on in this story for me to particularly love any part of it. It's part wilderness thriller, folk horror, there's some romance threaded through plus shapeshifting and magic - and it was just too much, even allowing that it'll be a trilogy. The writing was pretty simplistic at times, which could have been fine for an NA book, but there wasn't even substance despite the length of the book, again because too much was thrown into the pot to cook any one part of it. There were also too many POVs, some of whom felt redundant in the narrative once they're all running around in the woods. I think with more editorial chopping and a choice to stick to one thing, for example, a wilderness horror plot, something more cohesive, it would have read better.
This wasn't my jam, but I hope the series finds its readers!
Between the Birches is not my typical genre. But I freaking loved it. I was Team Grady for most of the book. Beth is strong and sarcastic and stubborn to a fault. Grady is dark, broody and smexy.
Tom is that man you'd bring home to momma.
There are plenty of twists in store for you as you travel into the mountains and learn magic is real.
Oh, and there may or may not be an evil god lurking beneath those picturesque views.
I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, which I have provided below. Thank you K.P. Roberson for the honour of allowing me to read your debut novel prior to publication!
For me, "Between the Birches: Awakening" by K.P. Roberson is a novel that's hard to slot into a specific genre. It's part mystery-suspense-horror-paranormal fantasy-romance, and more. Irrespective of trying to qualify it, I enjoyed the book!
The novel, at its heart, is centered around the relationship between Tom and Beth Newman, a newly-married pair who seem to be the ideal couple. To mark Beth's twenty-fifth birthday, the newlyweds elect to travel to the Appalachians and do some hiking, spending time with old friends along the way, including Tom's best friend Grady.
What sounds like a fun weekend turns into anything but, as very early in the novel the reader will quickly realize that much is amiss. Then, a series of frightening events unfold that will make the reader worry for not only the survival of the new marriage, but also the very lives of both Tom and Beth.
This is a very challenging book to review without giving away spoilers because the suspense starts within the first few fifteen pages with Tom's thoughts, and right away the reader will know there is great potential for danger. But initial indications point to the danger being posed by other humans, not the the supernatural danger that awaits the characters.
I'm a huge romance fan, and I love character-driven novels, so features of this novel were right in my wheelhouse. Roberson does a good job with both these elements, and brings a sense of tragedy and impending doom to the new marriage, as Tom's best friend Grady seems fated to take Beth away from Tom.
We also feel empathy for all three characters and how none of them want things to end up horribly, but seem powerless, due to magical influences, to avoid it. Since we get chapters written from the perspective of all three of those involved in this love triangle, it only makes the situation more poignant and more compelling. Expect some heart-break in more ways than one by the end of "Between the Birches: Awakening".
Roberson ratchets up the tension as each page is turned in the the novel, as paranormal threats begin to threaten the safety of both primary and tertiary characters, and as the reader we will be unsure for a vast portion of the book which characters are on the side of good, or evil.
There are plenty of spooky, downright chilling moments in the book, and readers will be on the edge of their seat, awaiting the fate of their favourite characters. Ja'azul, the Agnazar's and other appropriately terrifying aspects, along with foreboding human enemies involved in more than just cult worship, made the horror in the book really work well.
Goddesses, malevolent spirits, and manipulated mortals all come together in a deliciously eerie vibe that keeps back-of-neck hairs nicely raised throughout the book. The pace is fast, and I kept pushing forward to see what happened next.
For those who like their horror / thrillers creepy, briskly-paced, spiced up with some good romance, I recommend you give "Between the Birches: Awakening" a try! I am looking forward to reading the next installment of what appears to be a series by Roberson.
Between the Birches: Awakening by K.P. Roberson is an exciting, intense read that had me eager to keep reading and see what happened next. I've never read anything quite like it.
~Spoilers Ahead~
First of all, the romance was really interesting because while it was a love triangle, it wasn't an ordinary one. Beth is married to Tom and they're deeply in love, but during the course of the story Beth learns she has a magical pull to be with Grady (Tom's best friend who is really more like a brother). She is fated to be with Grady, yet despite the feelings she feels growing for him, she is determined to remain loyal to Tom. Honestly, I felt so bad for all three of them. Tom knows his wife is fated to be with his best friend, and he also knows being with Beth will eventually kill him because he's non-magical. I also felt bad for Grady because his feelings for Beth were overpowering and he had to fight it each day. And poor Beth! She loved Tom but still felt the magical pull and connection to Grady. What a mess for these three!!
The magical/mystical aspect of the plot was really neat as well. While dealing with all the romance drama, the trio also had to deal with threats from outside sources. Intense!!
Overall, I enjoyed Between the Birches and even though the ending was soooo sad, I believe it set us up perfectly for the sequel! I'm excited to see what's to come!
*I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review
What a great book! I was hooked and stayed up way too late reading it as I just had to know what was going to happen. It starts out with a husband and wife who are taking a hiking trip with a guy friend of theirs for her birthday. Once they arrive there are 2 more old guy friends waiting to seemingly join the group for the hike. Things quickly take a sinister turn that is born of evil forces, and magical influence. You don't know who is good, who is bad, who you can trust and who will die! I was holding my breathe for half the book, it was gripping and thrilling from beginning to end. It held so many different aspects thus making me enjoy it that much more. I laughed, I cried, I hid under my blanket and loved every second of it. I am so excited to see what book 2 has in store for us. If you love mysteries, thrillers, paranormal, adventure and excitement then this book is for you!
A "splash of cosmic horror" is probably an understatement for this book.
I think it's important to know going in, this book is 3rd person, switching from multiple point of views, and is high action sequencing. One very unique thing to the POV switching is you get both some "Guardian" character and "Villain" character POV's.
It's a high atmosphere, high tension plot, with a strong "chosen one" destiny theme. The length lends to the fantasy genre, yet is more lovecraftian in elements than urban fantasy usually lends. You spend almost half the book moving through escape sequences terrified of... you don't know what yet. But you know it's bad (and it is!).
The central romance is a love triangle but not in the typical way, and it's both important to the plot but not the primary focus. It's a necessary element though, and provides key slowdown/quiet moments to the otherwise consistently building narrative.
The writing style and storyline bridges just enough genres its hard to pin it. And I don't read fantasy enough to give great comps. My gut reaction is to say Cabin in the Woods meets Game of Thrones? (I know that sounds crazy but somehow it works. Just be ready for your heart to race!)
Between the Birches: Awakening opens with Beth, her husband Tom, and their best friend, Grady heading on a camping trip in the Appalachian mountains to celebrate Beth’s 25th birthday. Shortly after they arrive, the trio unexpectedly encounters two of Tom and Grady’s old friends, and the trip quickly turns into a nightmare.
Told from multiple points of view, Between the Birches is an imaginative, unpredictable, genre-bending story. From cults to forest beasts to magic, this book weaves in a little bit of everything – and it works. Throughout the book, I honestly had no idea who or what was lurking on the next page.
Like all good horror stories, there were several moments, especially early in the story, when I wanted to grab the characters and scream, “Turn around” or “No. Don’t go there!” There is also an unusual love triangle that is responsible for a lot of tense and tender moments. All three of the main characters are relatable in their own way, though Tom was my favorite.
As a side note, I enjoyed that there were a few references to my home state of North Carolina (although, after reading, I don’t think I’ll be going into any forests on the NC/Tenn border any time soon!).
The book ends with a bit of a cliffhanger, setting us up for the next installment in the series. I, for one, am looking forward to seeing what the future holds for this crew.
Thank you to K.P. Roberson for providing me a free e-ARC of Between the Birches: Awakening. The opinions in this review are entirely my own. To read more of my reviews, visit www.bookpicksandpics.com.
I was given a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review! I want to start by saying this is a debut novel, therefore, I didn't let the editing issues sway my review. The story itself was written in my favorite style...build up, climax, another build up, new climax until the end! It was very reminiscent of OG Nora Robert's! Loved the characters, even if I like my Heroines a bit less cry-baby, here she is more relatable!! Several tears were shed in the reading of this novel, team Tom here! I'm excited for the follow-ups!!
Also, bonus points for getting me a Bookopoly piece: Author name starting with an R!!
"I was in a forest. And it was so beautiful . . .I didn’t want to leave. . .That was before everything started to get dark. Then there was something watching me." Little did Beth know that the dream she had the night before her twenty-fifth birthday would end up coming true.
Between the Birches: Awakening, the debut novel by K. P. Roberson, starts with Beth's birthday celebration as she joins her husband, Tom, and their best friend Grady on a hike in the forests of North Carolina. This day turns out to be the day Beth's life changes forever as she realizes the world that she thought she knew, the people she thought she knew, including those nearest and dearest to her, are not at all what she thought.
Roberson weaves the multiple points of view of the three main protagonists clearly throughout the story. The way magic works in her world is logically built from the ground up and one is not left with flaws in the logic at any point.
This novel is the first in a planned trilogy and the story is off to a great start. An overall fantastic first novel.
Note: I was given a beta version of this book to comment on and this review is based on that version. I enjoyed the book immensely and will be picking up final version as soon as it is published. I recommend that you do so too.
I was lucky enough to be a beta reader for this book, and I loved it! I can't wait to buy and reread it again when it's published. I was invested in the characters and the story from the very beginning. Beth, Tom and Grady face many obstacles as they take this journey and end up fighting for their lives... at times working together and other times falling apart. There is an excellent blend of magic, reality and people coming together to face their destinies, which is never an easy task. I couldn't predict what would happen next as twists and turns continued to develop throughout the story, which made the book very hard to put down! I can't wait to read book #2 in the series! 5 stars!!
As an avid reader myself, escaping to many different worlds and following various interesting peoples, it is my intent to give you a place to escape the realities of life for a short while.
Between the Birches is my first print published novel, and I am very proud of what I have created.
In this series, I hope this escape enraptures the mind, makes you think twice about stepping into the dark, and want to seek the magic within.
Happy reading, my fellow travelers! KP Roberson Author, Crocheter, Gardener, and Dork extraordinaire
I love a book that surprises me, and Between the Birches certainly did. Well written. It was easy for me to imagine and visualize the scenes and the characters. The descriptions are detailed enough that it felt like I was watching a movie. There's fear, there's magic and there's love; all the ingredients needed for a good read! I’ve always been afraid of walking through a forest, and now I know why! It kept me in suspense the whole time.
I usually have a favorite character in a story, but truthfully, I got equally hooked on Beth, Tom, and Grady. Okay, if you twisted my arm, I’d have to say Beth. She’s 25 and she is fearless. Can’t wait to read the next book because this one leaves you on the edge at the end. I want to know what happens next!!
This is the perfect book for anyone who is a fan of thrillers and romances. I really liked reading about Beth. It’s a short book to read. I recommend this for fans of mystery books like Maureen Johnson and Natasha Preston.
This book was amazing! It included my fave things, romance, magic and a strong woman lead! I couldn’t put it down! It is, however, hard to review without giving too much. The different views in which it is written is also very entertaining and gives you a better perspective & understanding of what goes on. would highly recommend!
What an amazing book! I told Katie when she sent me the ARC copy that I’m usually a visual person that prefers movies, tv shows, etc. But, I truly enjoyed reading this. I think it may have turned me into a reader haha. Nah, probably not. This story was suspenseful enough to keep me interested though, and is written very well. I am very honored to be able to read it before release and can’t wait to receive my signed, hard hard copy. What a treasure!
"Between the Birches is a magically enduring read that stays with you long after it’s over. Chapter after chapter you’re left examining your own ghosts. The characters pull you in, to journey alongside their wild reckoning, their fight against evil, and their depth of love. There’s no backing out; once you cross the line Between the Birches, you’re all in - there’s no escaping the beauty and unfathomable power of earth, of desire, and of friendship. All the lessons are in sight, do you dare enter the woods? You have no choice, you must enter the circle in the woods; it’s the only safe place to gain your footing. The alluring, yet completely reachable urban fantasy fiction novel moves you closer to your edges, begging for an exploration of your soul, your witchiness, and your connection to everything sacred. It reminds you that you hold all the power you need within you." (Copyright 2022)
The book "Between the Birches: Awakening" is a fascinating, enthralling page turner that will have you glued to a spot for hours. It takes you on a magical through friendship, love, betrayal, loyalty. I personally loved the way in which friendship was portrayed in the book. The book deserves a five star rating
There are several approaches I could take to review this book, but it seems most fitting to look at it as a centuries old love triangle. Or triangles, I’m not sure at this point. With magic, battles between good and evil, and the wonders of nature all playing a part.
Beth and Tom Newman, childhood friends and college sweethearts, are happily married and living in rural Appalachia. Neither is aware of the special abilities Beth has inherited from her ancestors, nor do they know that their best friend, Grady Cooper, has inherited magic from his ancestors as well. After a planned birthday hike for Beth goes horribly, almost deadly awry, Grady reveals one of his secrets (his magical powers) and that Beth has also inherited magical powers. Powers that were to remain unknown until they were needed. And that time has come.
I will forego the usual description of the main characters because this IS a romance novel, albeit one with a magic twist. Let’s just say there is nothing homely about them.
After an encounter with and escape from two of their high school friends turned evil, Grady takes them to the Grove, a place Beth had a dream/nightmare about, a place of refuge and sanctuary from the evils pursuing and awaiting them. But neither Tom or Beth know this yet, for it’s a place Grady has not told them about. And the Grove is a magical place, in this world but not of this world, as far as time is constructed. Days in the Grove are only hours in the mundane world.
Grady then tells Beth the origin story, how Tom, Paul. Jeff and he were to be inducted by their fathers into a cult that does ritual sacrifices to the demon Ja’azul. Ja’azul has promised them immortality in return for souls. But Tom and Grady rejected that idea and were cowed into silence by threats from their fathers.
Beth and Grady are also descendants of powerful witches from centuries ago. Witches who were caught in a love triangle similar to Tom, Beth and Grady; witches who fought off Ja’azul and whose descendants are bound to continue the fight. For Beth is a light-bringer, destined to champion the cause of good and who will bear the child that ultimately defeats Ja’azul. Grady is a magician and shape changer whose animal form is a panther. They are both guardians of this world.
The trio battle through a number of near-death experiences with Ja’azul’s minions and learn that Tom is fated to die. And Grady, dearest and closest friend, will father the child that fights the ultimate battle.
The story is well paced, with characters that are believable, although the old man in me at first couldn’t deal with Tom and Grady expressing their emotions so openly and completely. I’m used to stoic heroes who keep it all in. But then I recognized this is a new world, one where men are encouraged to be honest with their emotions. K. P. Roberson has done well with her first book and I am looking forward to reading the complete series.
The book in question was difficult to read due to its juvenile plot, which centers solely around the desire for world domination. The main male character, Tom, takes his wife on a trip where he knows women are regularly sacrificed by his father and other men he knows. Despite this knowledge, he decides to park the car and put his wife in harm's way. It's a frustrating and confusing decision that makes the reader question his intelligence.
The other male character, Grady, is in love with the female lead, Beth, because they are destined mates. However, he becomes angry when Beth chooses to honor her marriage vows and not pursue a relationship with him. Both men cry or glare at each other in every chapter, which becomes repetitive and tiresome.
The writing style of the book is choppy and cringeworthy. The plot is bland, with a lack of rising action, and the climax is underwhelming. The romance lacks depth and passion. Overall, the book falls flat as a mystery or thriller, and I wouldn't recommend it to others.
Beth is celebrating her 25th birthday on a weekend hiking trip with her husband Tom and their friend Grady, Early in the trip they are surprised by new members to their party as well as sinisiter truths that leave Beth questioning everything she claims to know about herself as well as those close to her.
I was thoroughly intrigued by the premise of the book but was immediately put off by the extremely choppy writing style. I had a hard time staying immersed in the story since it felt like key plot elements were not well placed, and it overall affected the pacing of the book for me, and unfortunately this continued on for the rest of the book.
What a great read so far! A very intense read! It almost felt like I’m watching a movie. I hate to admit that I’m a guy in his 20s who likes a book like this. That’s why I won’t use my real name. However, since I can stay anonymous, I feel free to express myself. I’m a conservative guy, but I’m more open minded when it comes to some of the topics in this book. Like I said, I’d never admit it. I’ll even admit I had to hide it from my wife. I’d never want her to see me reading something like that. The book so far has given a lot of those great feelings.
Between the Birches: Awakening starts out with choppy, unpolished writing, and unfortunately, never gets any better.
This is the story of newlyweds Beth and Tom, and their friend Grady, and it fateful trip to the woods.
There is a lot to get through, like evil lurking, secrets, cults, frenemies, but the tell-not-show style of writing gets real old, really quickly.
This is a book that needed strong editing to both pare down the number of elements and to bring the storytelling itself from the first draft it appears to be.
Great story! My heart ached for Beth, Tom, and Grady. I look forward to reading the next book in the series. Great job, KP Roberson! Thank you for my ARC. It is an honor to rate and review your book. I really enjoyed it.
I really wanted to like this! It's a DNF for me but with huge regrets, and I feel really bad for doing so.
The scenario is good, the setup itself gripping; the female protagonist is relatable and I want to see how things pan out. The trouble is that it seems to move oddly, with the multiple perspectives giving it a jerky quality, and things speed along a little too fast. The writing can be abrupt and the 'baddies' a bit two-dimensional. Also the 'cult' aspect didn't seem to make much sense to me, as it was just There. It was a case of almost shouting at the page 'run, you fools!' from the first realization of Imminent Badness!
I think if there'd been some more background shown for everyone rather than simply described, that would have helped, but the book just didn't grab me. I'm so sorry!
Thanks to BookTasters and the author for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The book tell the story of a married couple on hiking trip that does not exactly go to plan and is a unique blend of thriller, supernatural-romance, horror. The writing keeps you hooked from the first few pages and you cannot but help but read until the very end. The three main characters are likeable and so well written it is easy to feel empathy for their situation and to root for them in their struggles. The are some great moments in the book that send a genuine chill up the spine. Can't say too much more without revealing any spoilers - but well worth the read!
I received this book in exchange for an honest review. I really like the beginning of the book and where it was going, kind of Blair Witch style then the story spirals a bit out of control. The story should have stayed with that first creepy witch in the woods plot, and turn the other parts of the story into a series. Seemed like there were multiple offshoots - all good but not necessary for one book. Made the book go longer than it needed. Overall I found it to be creative and a little creepy at the beginning.
I have no words to describe how much I loved it...not to say this was an all new genre to me and I enjoyed it so thoroughly I just can't wait for the next two installments of it. This book was the combination of romance fantasy horror and what not. The suspense and looming threat of doom starts pretty early in the book and you just know that you're upto a scary ride. Not to give spoilers but I actually thought it would just some cult thing that would be the centre of it but damn here comes creepy gods and ghosts to make it all the more interesting 😂. Now our main characters Beth , Grady and Tom . I loved loved loved Beth so much! She was sooo my kind of girl with an snarky attitude and a heart so big and pure 🥺 she was so brave too coming to terms with all the weird things happening one by one . And yeah I was sooo team Grady from the get go 😂 don't ask me why coz I don't know but I just loved him more with beth . Now here's a sexy hunk . And it seems like fates on my side too! So yeah this book was an all new experience for me too and I can't thank enough for giving me a copy the book for an honest review. From the first few chapters itself the story will hold your attention and you'll be on the edge of your seat waiting for what happens next . The suspense is just crazy and mind boggling. Hope the other two installments are equally good too
Thanks to NetGalley and BDA Publishing for an ARC of this novel.
3.5 rounded down to 3.
It's been a while since I've read any fantasy novels, so I didn't really go into this one with too many expectations. I thought the premise sounded very intriguing, especially with the folklore and horror all wrapped in together.
Overall, I thought the concept was very good. The story was actually really fast-paced, and there were shorter chapters which help the story flow. I was highly entertained and was looking forward to seeing what would happen next.
However, I feel like overall it ended up falling short. It seemed like the author had too much going on, and this might have worked better as a longer series across several books than just a trilogy. There was literally everything in the novel - cults, ritual sacrifices, ghosts, witches, magic, shapeshifters, love triangles...it was a lot to develop the world, characters, and the plot in a mere 500 pages. A lot of things that happened that seemed extremely random, which left me confused and created minor plot holes since they weren't addressed later on. Additionally, the characters would have reactions to certain events happening that seemed life-altering, but then just move on and act as if other significant events weren't a big deal. It just came across as bizarre, which I think again has to do with how much the author wanted to include/accomplish in a short number of pages. I also didn't get much of a "folklore" aspect, since nothing was really explained/developed about the world or creatures. Normally I would prefer this style of storytelling, because I find that other authors tend to be too detailed; however, I think if there was more character and world-building, this would have resulted in a higher rating from me.
I will post a review to my Instagram once it is closer to publication day.
Many thanks to NetGalley and BDA Publishing for providing me with an eARC of Between the Birches in exchange for my honest review!
The deployment of a certain popular trope in this book does prevent me from enjoying it as much as I want to, but it still gets me invested enough in the emotion and tension of its tale that I'm able to come out of it on a positive note. KP Roberson blends folklore horror with romance in a way that pulls me into the interrelationships between Beth, Tom, and Grady as they navigate the murky and complicated space of love and magic that hangs between them and as they attempt to ward off ritualistic murderers. Now, this isn't the outright terrifying kind of horror, but more of the slow-burn sort that arises from the supernatural and cult-like atmosphere, which I vibed with.
However, this book ends up deploying the love triangle trope, which I typically struggle to get onboard for. Sure, there have been a few successful examples (e.g. the Legendborn series by Tracy Deonn), but otherwise I find it to be a tiresome trope. Here in Between the Birches, I do think it provides some interesting facets and suspense for the main characters, but still, the cliche existing in the first place presents quite the obstacle in my reading experience. I also think the brief POVs that have been handed over to a few minor characters are unnecessary, although this is a minor gripe in the grand scheme of things.
Overall, I'm officially rating Between the Birches: Awakening 3.25 out of 5 stars, which I'll round down to 3 stars on Goodreads. Despite my issues here, I'm glad I checked out this book, and I'm looking forward to the sequel.
