Hometown Hunters The Day it Rained Ducks Book Learning Self-respect, never give up, and survival For Reading Age 8 - 14 Bronze Moonbeam Children's Book Award Winner Width x 5.25" x 7.5" Number of 151 Pages Cover Softcover Back Cover Blair Thomas lives in the friendly, lakeside town of Lainey, Michigan, on the beautiful shores of Lake Huron. Lainey boasts superb hunting opportunities and offers visitors miles of sandy shoreline and weekend tours of the historic Tesla Lighthouse. It’s the beginning of the fall, duck hunting season, and Blair and her dad are busy preparing for her very first duck hunt. The forecast is calling for extremely high winds and rain, absolutely perfect weather for duck hunting—it doesn’t get any better than this! Excitement mounts as Blair, her dad, and their faithful chocolate lab, Mac, head in their john-boat toward Edmond Island, four miles offshore. But things start to spiral out of control quickly as two massive storms collide, creating an historic storm directly overhead. Storms like this are dangerous, and this one turns out to be much worse than Blair or her dad could ever have imagined. The storm takes control of the lake, hammering them with huge waves, and changes what was to be an exciting duck hunt into a desperate struggle for survival. Amidst all the chaos, however, the storm has a special gift for Blair. But will she survive long enough to get it?

A Review of The Day it Rained Ducks
Imagine going hunting on an island and after the boat capsizes, you cannot find your parents. That’s what happens in The Day it Rained Ducks, a novel by Lane Walker. Walker has written a lot of books about hunting in his Hometown Hunters series and this is the first one I have read, and readers can read them in any order.
The story is about a 12 year-old girl. Her name is Blair Thomas. She went duck hunting for the first time on Lake Huron, one of the Great Lakes in Michigan. She went with her dad and her dog, Mack before dawn to Edmond Island in Lake Huron. While they were hunting, they ran into two massive storms. The boat capsizes and Blair gets lost from her dad for two hours. She finds her dog and the rest of the story is about her getting to the shore and finding her dad.
What I liked about this book is all the action, all the outdoorsmanship, the drama and the competition between Blair and her classmates. Walker’s use of language describing the cold water, choppy waves and rough lake water made me feel like I was in the story. I like to hunt with my dad and brother and Walker does a great job expressing the details of hunting. When Blair yells out over and over again to her dad when she can’t find him, it makes you worry that she’s never going to see her dad again and that he may be dead. This story is dramatic which is one of the reasons it is worth reading. The competition between Blair and one of her classmates is funny and entertaining. This kind of thing happens at school between girls and it is hilarious.
I recommend The Day it Rained Ducks. This story is funny in the beginning, it has a lot of action and has some drama. Kids who like action, drama and humor would enjoy reading this story. The main character, Blair, was great because she was brave. She stayed alive for over two hours in freezing cold water, and she did not have her dad and she had to figure out how to get to shore.
Based on this Good Reads rating system:
1 Star : Hated it/did not finish
2 Stars : Did not really like it, but finished it and it had some good qualities
3 Stars : It was okay, but I won't read it again
4 Stars : I really liked it and would be okay to read it again
5 Stars : OMG I LOVED IT AND I NEED TO READ IT AGAIN AND YOU REALLY SHOULD TOO
I would give The Day it Rained Ducks a 5-Star rating.

The children will enjoy the excitement of these books. There are also some good underlying morals and truths being taught throughout. As an adult, I struggle with some of the amateur writing mistakes (repeating cliche chapter endings) and things that couldn't logically happen. For example, in this book a fire is built and started on a beach after a drenching storm, big enough to warm a person, and then someone goes and gets a phone, and finally, 911 is called, but the helicopter was only minutes away....

The book that I choose to review is called The Day It Rained Ducks. The author of this book is Lane Walker. The book is about a father and his kids that love to duck hunt. They go to a duck hunting banquet. They end up winning two hunting tags while attending the banquet. They pack their boat for the next mornigns trip to the lake to go duck hunting. While out hunting a storm rolled in and they were pushed out away from shore.

While reading this book I could see that the author knew about duck hunting. The author talked about the types of ducks they were hunting. They were hunting drake mallards and green wing teal. When the author talked about the storm he used the word wicked. The word wicked to me means wild and crazy. When the author described the search and rescue team it kept me wondering if they would find the dad.

This book would be good for kids that like hunting. I love duck hunting and could play this book like a movie in my head. I enjoyed reading this story. The author told the story like it was real life and could happen while duck hunting. He was very discriptive when talking about the hunt, ducks, dog, and storm. I would give this book 9.5 stars out of 10.
