Hannah Dustin Howell is a best-selling American author of over 40 historical romance novels. Many of her novels are set in medieval Scotland. She also writes under the names Sarah Dustin, Sandra Dustin, and Anna Jennet (see below).
"Highland Blood" by Hannah Howell-4 stars. Definitely her best work yet, no doubt. It ended a bit abruptly, but I loved the red-haired "witch" (healer) who saved and tried to rear a vampire halfling. And after a couple years, when she realized he needed more than she could give, she tried to find the MacNachton clan...and did. But not before she got chased down by the Hunters (humans who feel they're doing God's work by exterminating the vampires). That's when our hero stepped in and saved her and the little boy. You can guess the rest :) Sweet story, great action.
Alexandra Ivy's "Taken by Darkness"-5 stars Fantastic addition to her series. Anyone who has read her Guardians of Eternity series will love this. It's about Dante's brother, but this takes place in the 1800s. Very cool story about a vampire who meets a woman who is his mate, but he's in denial about it so he cavorts in Italy for 6 months before returning to London. She is the only woman who has ever said no to him, and he intends to persuade her otherwise. Love the story-loved it!
"Immortal Dreams" by Kaitlin O'Riely-4 stars I loved this story. I absolutely loved the vampire still looking for his long lost soul mate. Beautifully written, and I will definitely read this author again. So why not a 5 star you ask? I'll tell you. At the end, Grace's controlling and tyrant of a mother-in-law never "got hers" so-to-speak. She had Grace committed for crying out loud! And Grace and Phillip just escaped like thieves in the night. It was soo unsatisfying an ending I bumped the story down a full star! grr...I'd have LOVED her MIL to have at least been kicked out. When Grace actually stood up to Mary, I was like "Finally! This is what we've been waiting for!" But the story itself and the love was sweet and beautiful.
I was in the mood for vampires and saw this anthology on Overdrive. These are all novella length stories.
Highland Blood by Hannah Howell 3 stars I liked Adeline from the start. She rescues a vampire child not knowing what he is and even allows him to feed from her. Adeline is a kind and loving woman. Enter The Hunters who are trying to kill all vampires and she is rescued by Lachlan, who has a huge chip on his shoulder when it comes to Outsiders. There is romance, action, tons of awkward Scottish brogue written into the dialogue, and Lachlan acting like a cowardly dick and not being honest with his feelings for Adeline when any dolt can see she's perfect. Either way, they get their HEA.
Taken by Darkness by Alexandra Ivy 3 stars This was a vampire tale that takes place in Recency England. Victor is the king of Vampires. He's 1000 years old and very powerful. But he has been brought to his knees by Juliet. She's part witch/part imp. They dance around each other and she resists him (mostly because he's a huge...I don't know the word to describe the amount of sex this guy has with his harem) When Juliet risks her safety to rescue a friend, Victor goes after her and they finally come together. The characters and plot were good but there were a few details that pulled me out of the story.
Safety
Immortal Dreams by Kaitlin O'Riley 1 star This book was a complete mess. Dreams, reincarnation, the h was in denial the whole time and the H was a stupid idiot.
Her book was good. I am only disappointed that her vampire books are always anthology books or cowritten with other people. All of her vmpires are about very poor scottish people (men, women & children) & the coversations are very, uh.., whats the word?, well, it is written with the thick dilect that takes much longer to get through because you almost need to interpret it.
He vampires are on the hunt for the half breeds living among the humans. Most humans are mean to them or try to kill the children because they are demon spawns... That's the jist in each story, but each story is about a differnt vampire & the people they save. It was really descriptive and the storyline was a nice easy flow, with action of being hunted accepted & mated/loved.
Alexandra Ivy...
Hers was the best, but I think it was close between Hannah Howells and Alexandra Ivy. Hers is written in more modern tones even though it is a historical story about Victor & Juliet. Victor is the lord of the Vampire clan in London. Juliet is half witch & Imp, I think imp was also implied as being some kind of fae. It went along with her series & Both Juliet & Victor had to save the famous gargoyle "Levet".
Kaitlin O'Rley...
It was ok, but it just didn't flow as well to me as the others. The other 2 were highly decriptive & this one was not. Don't get me wrong, it was descriptive, just not as much or as good as the other 2 stories.
This one was about a woman Grace who in a previous life was in love with a vampire. He didn't change her before she was wisked off by her parents to live in a convent & she drowned at sea. He found her through her dreams.
She lives with a crazy religious finatic mother-in-law who wants her to marry a nice religious man. I just can't do religious finatic stuff because I live in the south with the crazy people too. It's just way too annoying.
All in All...
I give it a 4 star rating because it was worth the read even though the last story wasn't so enjoyable, the book itself was worth the half price purchase of $7 at Borders going out of business sale.
I bought this one to continue my reading of Hannah Howell's series of MacNachton vampires. "Highland Blood" stars Lachann MacNachton and Adeline Dunbar. Adeline has been taking care of a baby who was left to die in the woods by its mother because the father was a MacNachton. She is trying to get the now five year old to Cambrun keep, home of the MacNachtons as she is finding it too difficult to keep the boy safe. She is fierce in her protection of Osgar (I struggled with that name). As with the previous short stories this one is complete and not rushed.
"Taken by Darkness" was more paranormal than just vampires. It has a gargoyle and a Jinn in addition to vampires. I don't normally read this genre so I struggled to understand their characteristics but the story was well written. I loved Juliet and the merry dance she orchestrated with Victor.
"Immortal Dreams" was very interesting. It is a story of immortality and reincarnation. Phillip and Grace were lovers in the past but her parents disapproved and before they could run away together she was put on a ship which then capsized and she died. Phillip is a vampire so he waits decades for her spirit to reappear as she is his "mate". When her spirit is reborn he keeps close and negotiates a marriage between them. This love story is so well written that you will feel his heartache. It was brilliantly done. Grace changing her mind as she understands that she has been reborn and Phillip is the love in her dreams was not as convincingly written. I also wish the mother-in-law had been sent to an insane asylum or something worthy of her villainy.
Once more Hannah Howell create a good paranormal fiction with lots of action, adventure, hot sex love forever... and a great author anthology collaboration
I read this book a long time ago. It got me interested in reading Hannah Howell and Alexandria Ivy’s books, unfortunately I did not enjoy Kaitlin O’Riley’s story. At the time I read this I was not reviewing, now I am and have re-read Yours For Eternity. I loved Highland Blood & Taken by Darkness. I could not bring myself to re-read Immortal Dreams. Each story takes place in the past and they don’t play a part in the series, so easily they can standalone. If you have not tried out the Guardians of Eternity by Alexandra Ivy or the MacNachton Vampire by Hannah Howell, then this will give you a great taste of the series and writing by these two authors.
5/5 Stars - Highland Blood by Hannah Howell
This is part of Hannah Howell’s MacNachton Vampire series, but can be read as a standalone. I loved re-visiting these characters. It has wet my appetite to go back and re-read this series. Even though this series and story are in the past I still enjoyed it. I’m not big on historical reads, but something about Hannah Howell’s writing makes it pleasurable. I like the spin she does on her Vampires. It’s intriguing and different. Both characters work well together and you feel the love and understanding.
5/5 Stars - Taken by Darkness by Alexandra Ivy
This is part of Alexandra Ivy’s Guardians of Eternity series. It does not play a part in the series and can standalone. We get to meet Victor our Clan Chef in London and Juliet his mate. Juliet and Victor make an appearance in one of the earlier books and I was curious on how they hooked up. We get action, attraction and humor. Levet of course is in this and we get all the usual humor he brings with him. I loved revisiting the Guardians of Eternity world and this line was my favorite: "My home is here...in your heart. And nothing absolutely nothing, could please me more."
2/5 Stars - Immortal Dreams by Kaitlin O'Riley
I tried, but could not bring myself to re-read or finish this one again. Did not like it the first time around. I don’t like women who can’t make there own decisions and who are fainting lily’s. Immortal Dreams was not for me. If the blurb intrigues you, I urge you to give it a shot. Just because it did not work for me does not mean it won’t for you.
“That I may have a lot more than fifty years with ye?” She laughed and hugged him. “Oh, Lachann, ’tis wondrous. I shall have years and years and years to love ye. Could anything be more wonderful!”He smiled down at her. “Nay, love, nothing could be more wonderful than years of loving ye and being loved by ye. I look forward to every one of them.”
Highland Blood HANNAH HOWELL
With a smooth motion, he swept her off her feet, headed for their bed. The cold emptiness that had claimed his soul centuries ago was melting beneath the tender heat of her gaze. “You will never leave me?”“I am yours, Marquis DeRosa,” she promised, “until the end of time.”He tightened his arms around her. “Until the end of time and beyond.”
Taken by Darkness ALEXANDRA IVY
“Please,” Grace whispered softly, echoing the words Gráinne had uttered to him a century ago. “Make me what you are.”
I read this anthology because I am reading Alexandra Ivy's Guardians of Eternity this has a short story to be read after book 6 Beyond the darkness. Levet mentions in the 6th book he had ran into Jinn before and in this short story we go back in time and to England where he has befriended Juliet and when he ends up in trouble then her mate and her help out. So again poor Levet is the friend to woman crazy enough to love a vampire. While reading this short book I read the other two stories is this book. they were really good. Hannah Howell's goes along with her Highland Vampire series I think although I read those books I hadn't read this one so I'm not sure if it goes with them or not but it's along the same "vain" if not. Then Kaitlin O'Riley I have never read before but this short defiantly was good enough that I added some of her books to my list of books to read so I can see how good her other books are. Ok when now I am going to read my of the Guardians of Eternity by Alexandra Ivy- they are awesome books.
Hannah Howell- Highland Blood- Adeline rescues a little boy after seeing the mother leaving him in the woods for the beasties to eat. She is quick to find out Osgar is not a regular child when he bites her wrist. After two years and a 3rd attempt on Osgar's life, Adeline packs up and heads to the Highlands where she heard Osgar's kinsmen on his father's side live. She meets Lachann on the way.
Alexandra Ivy- Taken by Darkness- Includes a character from the Guardians of Eternity series, Levet. Story is about Juliet and Victor.
Kaitlin O'Riley- Immortal Dreams- Grace dreams of Phillip more and more. It is her but in a different time and place. Then she see's the man of her dreams in person at a ball. She has just agreed to marry another to get away from her Mother-in-Law who blames Grace for the death of her saintly son.
Ugh how cute, Osgar was adorable, and I enjoyed how the two main characters came together. I also had a soft spot for this clan in general, since I really enjoyed book #1 when I read it a few years ago. The ending was sadly a bit abrupt.
Alexandra Ivy - Taken By Darkness (Guardians of Eternity #6.5) - 4 stars
I was concerned I was going to hate this one, seeing the animosity between Victor and Juliet, but Victor luckily did a complete 180 and by the end I really really liked him.
Kaitlin O'Riley - Immortal Dreams - 3 stars
Not as good as the other two, but still enjoyable. I think it lacked POV of the hero, because I never really felt anything for him, and well, in a romance that's a very bad thing. It also seemed a bit too simplistic, plot-wise.
I give all 3 separate stories 3 stars. I bought the book so I could continue following the Alexandra Ivy Guardians of Eternity series. Taken by Darkness (Ivy's) does not really play a role in the series. Levet is the only character in common with the novels. All 3 stories in this book are historical. I am not a fan of historical. The stories are interesting & wrote well. I just feel I could have not bought this book & carried on reading the Guardians of Eternity books without missing out on anything. I have never read the other 2 authors that are featured in the book. I must say even though it was historical I really enjoyed Kaitlin O'Rileys Immortal Dreams. It was a sweet story of a past life/vampire love.
Hannah Howell is one of the best. Just like some others, I read her books over and over ,just how good I have her books in paper back on my kindle ,give her a try you want be sorry.
The first story was alright. I know that one is part of a series by one of the authors. Based on that short story alone, I would never read the rest. I had too hard of a time even understanding what the characters were saying. The second story was more enjoyable but felt very rushed (yes I know it's a short story). I would have liked to see more to it though. The last story was my favorite of the three. I honestly would have read a whole book with the same premise of that short story. I think it would have made a pretty good standalone paranormal romance tbh.
Always a good story from Hannah Howell... I had never read anything from A. Ivy or K. O'Riley before, but both of their short-stories were really good!
When Adeline Dunbar finds an abandoned baby on her doorstep, she sets out to find his clan. Attacked by a group of demon hunters, Adeline tries to flee her rescuer, vampire Lachann MacNachton. But escaping Lachann proves useless--as does denying the primal hunger he stirs deep within her. . .
The vampires can eat, drink, and procreate. Their blood-need is a curse only hinted at in this story. What the author does is bring you into the lives of Adeline, Osgar her "found" son, and Lachann or the clan MacNachton. Osgar is an endearing, and very bright boy who speaks older than his five years. Of course, he may easily speak of some adult things but in just a few seconds he plays with his cats, or stones, and twigs as any Highland 5-year old might.
Adeline is a strong, Highland lass, a Healer: which means as long as her village needs what she does, she is tolerated. A witch's death awaits her if/when she is no longer needed.
Lachann is a Highlander from a very strong, and united clan that wants their numbers to survive. That is being threatened. Lachann is away from the fortress that protects the MacNachtons looking for "The Lost Ones" children whose parents were MacNachton. Unfortunately for many the result was a grim one.
"Taken by Darkness" by Alexandra Ivy The daughter of a witch, Juliet Lawrence has inherited magical powers--powers that could be quite useful to Victor, Marquess DeRosa, London's most powerful vampire. But that's not all Victor desires of Juliet. He wants the unpredictable beauty in his bed--and he is accustomed to getting what he wants. . .
A good story but mostly forgotten by me by the time I reached the end. Juliet and Victor are on the fringes of the main vampires in the Guardians of Eternity series.
"Immortal Dreams" by Kaitlin O'Riley Beautiful widow Grace Sutton is haunted by recurring dreams of a past life and a mysterious, handsome stranger. When Grace meets Stuart Phillips, Lord Radcliffe--the vampire who has been searching for her for over a century--her sensual dreams soon come true in the most unforgettable way. . .
A beautiful step back into the time of the Regency. Grace is not demonstrative in her thoughts; she has been doing her best to be a "proper lady of the times". She married, but now she is widowed and she lives in the same house as her over-bearing mother-in-law. Grace longs for escape, and it seems that her very realistic dreams offer this, but then she falls in love with the mysterious man of her dreams, and her thoughts, kept so long in straight laces and corsets, are yearning to be let out.
Then, there arrives Lord Radcliffe and Grace discovers that dreams CAN become reality.

Dark, sexy and immortal, who wouldn't want one to keep one of these fangsome guys for an eternity. Yours For Eternity was an enjoyable collection of historical vampire romances - that made me wish for more.
"Highland Blood" - Hannah Howell - When it is clear that her unusual foster son, Osgard, will never be safe Adeline leaves behind everything to try to return him to his father's clan the notorious MacNachtons. Fortunately, Lachann MacNachton, coincidentally on a missing to find the `lost ones' like her son, is on hand with a timely but frightening rescue when Adeline and Osgar are beset by `hunters' seeking to capture her son. But in witnessing her rescuer's bloodlust, Adeline questions her decision even as she can't help being both wary of and attracted to her savior. (This was my favorite of the collection, I just love Howell's MacNachton males and the heroine is good too.)
"Taken by Darkness" - Alexandra Ivy - Powerful vampire leader Victor having tried everything to get over his distracting obsession with the magical Juliet has decided not to fight his desire any longer - he will make the lovely woman his. Juliet however has other ideas. Of course she is attracted by the dark and sensual Victor, but she refuses to be used to satisfy his `hungers' only to become just another of his harem. But when a friend is in trouble, Juliet will rush headlong into danger and she will only survive because the powerful vampire is determined to keep her in his sights. (Connected to Ivy's series but set in an earlier time, Victor is Dante's brother and Levitt makes a brief appearance. I wished that Ivy would have saved this story for a full length book, I really liked the heroine Juliet and thought that her witch/imp heredity was very interesting and would have liked to have seen this story unfold more slowly. )
"Immortal Dreams" - Kaitlin O'Riley - Grace has dreams of a passionate love, dreams that seem so real that she wakes each night still reeling from the sensual intensity and expecting to see her lover outside her window. She thinks that her dreams are starting to invade her waking life as well when she meets the man of her dreams at her betrothal party. But he is no dream and it is clear that he shares her dreams and her passion. (The dream sequences and set up for the story were really good and I liked everything about this story but the ending - I just needed a little more time to get there.)

This wasn't too bad of an anthology overall but there were a lot of similarities with each story that made them kinda blur together. The first two stories read well enough, though it did feel like Highland Blood rushed a bit towards the end but I felt that Immortal Dreams kinda had the most issues in regards to pacing, and avoiding the insta-love .
Have to say that Taken by Darkness was my favorite of the book, followed by Highland Blood while Immortal Dreams was last.
Highland Blood - Hannah Howell. Another one of the Lost Ones is found. Adeline Dunbar witnesses a ruthless woman abandon her own son. She decides that she cannot just ignore this and rescues the three year old. The woman did not even bother to name him and Adeline (even after discovering that he is not an ordinary little boy) decides to adopt (for lack of a better word) him. For several years, they live together in the same village he was abandoned in, but when the attacks on the DEMON get to be to regular, she decides to take him to Camburn. On the way they meet up with Lachann and the adventure begins.
Taken by Darkness - Alexandra Ivy. Victor, a vampire, is stalking Juliet, a mongrel (half witch/half mage). He has decided that he wants her for himself. She thinks that he only wants her for sex and then her blood when he is tired of her. Through in a deformed gargolye and a Jinn and the things become more that either of them bargained for.
Immortal Dreams - Kaitlin O'Reiley. A widow, Grace, who has been having sinful dreams here entire life finally meets up with the man of her dreams, literally. Stuart Phillips, Lord Radcliffe, is actually the Phillip that Grace has loved in her dreams for as long as she can remember. This other life she lived (about 100 years ago) has another chance to end well. An annoying mother-in-law and new fiance make things a little complicated but nothing that Phillip can't handle.
Hannah Howell - Highland Blood (MacNachton Vampire #7) - Rating:4stars One of the two new to me authors here presented a well-written, easy to follow short. The very accurate synopsis leaves this reader with little to say except Adeline and Lachann were fairly well developed with good chemistry in their soft but fast courtship on the run. There was connection to the series in a mention of the Demon Hunter Laird issue though there were missing pieces due to the rapid pacing. Alexandra Ivy - Taken By Darkness (Guardians of Eternity #7.5) - Rating:3.75stars London clan vampire chief, desirable Victor, Marquess DeRosa covets witch Juliet Lawrence's powers and gives chase despite her staunch refusal and the enemy mage that protects her. The plotting felt a bit off for my taste in this dramatic right paced short featuring a subdued Levet in the midst of danger ushering the fated mates to their ultimate destiny and a fitting entry to the series.. Kaitlin O'Riley - Immortal Dreams - Rating:3stars The second new to me author here introduces beautiful widow Grace Sutton as she's been haunted by mysterious dreams of a handsome stranger as her mother in law busily tries to marry her off now that she can socialize again. Things begin to fall in place for Grace when she sees her dream man personified in vampire Stuart Phillips, Lord Radcliffe. Overall Rating: 4stars
Bought this book because of Hannah Howell's story but enjoyed the other two stories in this group. This is a reread for me since I bought this book back when it come out back in 2010.
"Highland Blood" by Hannah Howell When Adeline Dunbar finds an abandoned baby on her doorstep, she sets out to find his clan. Attacked by a group of demon hunters, Adeline tries to flee her rescuer, vampire Lachann MacNachton. But escaping Lachann proves useless--as does denying the primal hunger he stirs deep within her.
