Five Points #1

Sinful Urges: A Five Points Novel

Rate this book
A priest, a psychiatrist, and a demon hunter walk into a gas station.

This is where things get a little weird.

Because when they kidnap the beautiful, smart, witty, musically talented gas station attendant, aka moi , the next thing I know I'm waking up tied to a bed and surrounded by the hottest men I've ever seen.

I'm sorry, did you think this was a joke?

Because I'm not laughing.

Not when this trio of gorgeous assholes tells me I'm possessed. Especially not when they tell me they're going to exorcise me. If there's a punchline, it's that this is only the beginning--and after they're done with me, my life will never be the same.

It turns out when a demon's forced out of your body, it leaves something behind. Something that will change you forever. Something that opens the door for the most sinful dreams I've ever had in my life; dreams about a man I've never seen before, but he does things to me I can't explain. I don't know what's happening to me. The only people who can tell me are the ones who did this to me. But I can't stay away, even if every answer we find leads to even more questions. I need help. I need salvation. I need protection.

I need my exorcists.

To save me from these sinful urges...

...and to save me from myself.

I'm calling it. DNF 67%. I can't stand miscommunication and this one has it in spades. The exorcist and possession were interesting, but this was focused after that. I'm curious about the dreams, which I'm pretty sure is an incubus, but it feels like I'm trying to force myself to read it. I didn't like Trine and I didn't think much of the guys either. Nothing wrong with the writing. It just felt hollow to me. The moment she booked herself in to psychiatric help, I think I was done.

FMC - Trine
Guys - Misha (Demon hunter), Rei (Psychiatrist), Luke (Priest)
Bad guy - Mal? Whatever possessed Trine and Tom

DNF at 30%.. I just couldn't get into it. I really wanted to love this, because the blurb was hilarious and really intriguing. But the Story? It just wasn't for me. Somehow nothing happened in the first quarter of this book..

I know, sexy exorcism ... how is that even possible? It just totally works in this book and firstly let me warn you that this book is pretty dark and deals with demon possession. It's definitely not for everyone. Anyway, let's start at the beginning, the book opens with a prologue that immerses us immediately into the full blown exorcism of Catherine Lange, only we don't realize this until later. She is strapped to a bed and standing at the foot of the bed are three handsome strangers. She has no idea of who they are, why they are there and why she is strapped down to the bed. She has no recollection of anything that has occurred. They slowly release her and the one with a white collar around his neck helps escort her to the bathroom. She asks what did they give her because she's under the impression that they kidnapped her. The man with the collar tells her that they didn't give her anything, but freed her. She asks freed her from what and he replies from Satan. She doesn't see them again and one of the handsome strangers gave her a business card with Mikheil M - Demonhunter inscribed on it with no phone number. He also told her that he would call her for a debrief. She hasn't heard fromm him or any of the others, his name is ungooglable and whenever she asks anyone about where can she find the exorcism guys they give her the sideeye, quickly scooting away from her. It's been three years since the exorcism and she's tried to keep her head down and live a normal life but there's a division in her life that separates into two distinct time frames, pre-exorcism and post-exorcism. She has gotten herself a nice, sweet boyfriend but she's just not that into him. He gets a job in another state and she tells him she can't afford to go with him. He leaves without her, after all they weren't that serious about each other. She is also having very strange dreams along with a paralysis that occurs with the dream. Before the exorcism she never had reoccurring dreams and since after it she has had them nonstop. There's a shadowy man in her dream that she can't quite clearly see his face but with each progressive dream she starts to get a clearer picture of him. Then one day her phone rings and a familiar voice asks if she's Catherine Lange, which no one calls her that since her dad died. She answers in the affirmative and he tells her that he and his team are going to be in Orlando next week; that they'd like to get together for an informal interview. They agree to meet at a posh seafood restaurant. She arrives at the designated location an hour early and enters the restaurant. The place is basically empty except for the staff and her exorcists. One of them spots her, it's the priest. A hostess approaches her and asks how many people in her party to which she says that they're already here and that to tell whoever their server is to tell them to keep the drinks coming. She orders a rum and coke. She slowly makes her way to the table and all conversations between the guys has ceased. They all watch her approach. Mikhail stands to greet her and tells her that she's early to which she retorts back so is he. She stares at him, taking in his appearance. He's much taller than she remembered, with broad shoulders and long legs. He pulls out her chair and she mouths a thank you to him. He introduces her to the other too equally handsome men as Father Luke Salinas and Doctor Rei Woods. Dr. Woods proceeds to ask her how she's feeling and she answers, confused and curious. Fr. Salinas asks what does she remember. She wants to know when, before or after the exorcism. He tells her to start with the before. She struggles with remembering but eventually tells him that she was at work. He asks where did she work. She says she thinks it was at a gas station. They can see her struggle to remember it, then she says, at a garage as a cashier. He then asks what she did after work. She replies not much. That she'd go home watch TV, read, feed her cat and on Thursdays she had band practice, that she's a bassist in an all-girl punk rock band called Johnny Baskets. Then they ask her if she remembers calling them. She says no. They ask her what is the last thing she remembers before she woke up, after the event. The event being the exorcism. She says that she remembers her cat jumping on the bed and she looked at the TV, the streaming had stopped. Then she closed her eyes and woke up and they were there. She asks them if that's all. Misha tells her no, but food first and then they'll talk some more. Luke notices her checking Misha out and instead of feeling his normal amusement he feels annoyed. She leans forward and asks Luke why does he do this, she assumes that Misha is paying him. Luke tells her that the political answer would be it's what he does best, because he likes to help people but unfortunately it's about the church. They realize that a spiritual war is going and they don't realize that they're losing so he has taken matters into his own hands. Rei breaks into the conversation and to her relief asks if she's still working at the gas station. She says no that her band has suddenly blown up and they're playing a lot of concerts, in fact there's one this Saturday at a local bar if they'd like to come. Then Rei switches gears and asks about her dreams. She in turns asks him what kind of doctor is he especially with helping with exorcism. He tells her he's a psychiatrist. At that point she stops listening to him and she starts paying attention to the area around the hostess station. She has a vision that the hanging light fixture crashes down onto the hostess and kills her. She snaps out of it in time to see the overhead lamp begin to fall in real life. She quickly yells for the hostess to duck, which she does and she avoids getting seriously hurt. They all leave the restaurant going each their separate ways. Trine going to her apartment and the guys going to their hotel. They discuss the events of the evening and Rei asks them why are they still worrying about her that they're there for another case of possession. They reason out that they need to investigate her more because of the precognition they observed coupled with the strange dreams she's been having. Rei says that she probably won't open up to them if they're all there sitting in front of her dissecting everything she says. They come to the agreement that Rei will go to her concert and attempt to get information from her. Saturday night comes and Trine is doing sound check with her band when she notices that the doctor, Rei, came to her concert. She goes to meet him since it's well before their concert time. They get to talking. She discovers that the demonhunter, Misha, was once upon a time a social worker. She tells Rei that now she has so many questions. He tells her that if she's hungry after the show they can go out and get something to eat. He'll answer all of her questions. She starts to tell him that she probably won't tonight because she has to breakdown her equipment and it'll be really late when she gets through doing that, but she's free tomorrow. Before he can say anything, the lead singer of her band swoops in and tells them that she'll take care of Trine's equipment and make sure it gets to her house safely even if she doesn't make it home (wink, wink). Trine tells him that she's not going to sleep with him and he explains that he doesn't sleep with drunks anyway that if the person wants to forget about things he wants to be the cause for it. They go out to eat after the concert. They start to get to know each other. They decide to make a game out of asking each other questions and before you know it, they're back at Rei's hotel heading up to his room. Here is where I'll leave you and let me just say that things really heat up between her and her exorcists, yes plural. Please be aware that this book ends on a cliffhanger. I will say this, this book is deeply dark and sensually delicious if you can get past the demon possession part. It is not a horrific horror sort of book, but rather a look over your shoulder to make sure you're alone sort. At some point, I wondered what had I gotten myself into but I couldn't turn away from it. I got so engrossed in it and so vested in seeing the outcome that I couldn't put it down. A truly good book that I can definitely recommend, if you don't mind the dark subject matter, and I guarantee that you will be hooked. It is a highly engrossing book that you won't be able to put down! Whew, what a fantastic ride!.

🔥 “I’m going to teach you that you shouldn’t play with fire. Not unless you want to get burned.”
~~~
Trine is a smart and funny bass player in a punk band. Three years ago an exorcism was performed on her and she doesn’t remember anything before that event. She’s trying to go on with her life but she also needs answers. I really loved her feisty attitude. Even more, she’s so strong and brave to face the unknowns and dangers thrown her way. The path before her will not be an easy one. And the three exorcists that come back in her life will definitely turn it upside down.
I really loved Misha, Luke and Rei. I loved how different they are and at the same time how well they fit together. Luke - the social worker turned demon hunter. Rei - the attentive and dirty-mouthed psychiatrist. And Luke - the sensible, calm, kind and practical priest. All three are really good at their job and all they want is to make the world a better place. And all three men want Trine.
From the beginning the chemistry and attraction between the four was undeniable. But there are a lot of secrets standing in their way. Nevertheless, the steamy scenes between Trine, Rei and Misha were blazing hot. And I wonder how long Father Luke will be able to resist temptation?
In addition the storyline was fantastic - it’s dark, suspenseful and absolutely thrilling. Exorcisms are not a walk in the park and they are so well written and will give you all the chills and make you feel like you are in the room with everyone else. Even more, Trine might be more important than everyone thought. There were so many unexpected discoveries that kept me glued to the pages till the very end. And I have so many questions! What is the role of Trine’s mother in all that’s happening? Is Dr. O’Mara more than he appears? Argh! I need the next book ASAP!
Overall, the story is a magnificent start of the series. It’s filled with suspense, a bit of horror, danger, drama, twists, revelations, steamy moments and spectacular characters.
I absolutely loved it and cannot wait to see what happens next!
This is my first listen of this author and to be honest I don’t know if I will listen or read anything from them in the future. This book did not convince me unfortunately, the narration I think made the story worse (normally I don’t encounter those kind of audiobooks but this one was really hard to get through).
So I think the concept is good. I was intrigued, I gave it a shot, but the execution was subpar. First with the story, I think the guys for me were fine, I was getting confused when some were called by their last name and some by their first so I thought there were 4 guys instead of 3 haha. I also thought it weird there were more detailed physical descriptions far into the book randomly for some of the guys. I really really did not like the FMC, she irked me with her decisions and was not redeemable. She kept reverting back, the inner monologue got super repetitive. Some things she was sticking to in her arguments and being hurt didnt make sense in that moment. There was a lack of connection with some scenes/details given, like some were superfluous and didn’t tie in with the overall story or we missed some keys details and I had to re-listen to the chapter to figure out what was going on.
Narration was one of the worst I have ever listened to. I usually can get through this length of an audiobook in 2 days, it took me almost 6 days because I had to force myself to listen to it. I was not motivated to continue, I just listened to see how things ended (didnt realize at the time it was a series). The female narrator was so monotone, so lifeless in her performance, I couldnt stay engaged/couldnt connect with her. I listened a 1.4-1.5X and that didnt even help. She felt like a robot and lacked a ton of the emotions needed in this performance. The male narrator was better but his random accents for some of the guys wasn’t consistent, I was getting confused who was talking when. I am glad it was duet but it still was not a great experience. It has a lot of potential, but execution was just not there for me (writing or narrating).
🌿 BOOK REVIEW 🌿
I’m a dick because I promised Clarissa that I would read her story within a certain timeframe but then I didn’t because of ✨tHiNgS✨ but that doesn’t matter. All I want to show with this this.. confession, I guess, is that when you’re an ARC reader, literal situations can and will arise and you can’t keep your promise. Anyways, I don’t mean for this to overshadow the review because I did finally fucking read it and I slapped myself in the face that I didn’t do it sooner (again ✨tHiNgS✨) because this was so fucking good. Also I’m drunk. Yay.
I know I said it before but I’ll gladly say it again—people fucking sleep op Clarissa. I don’t know why. Maybe I find myself in the wrong crowd. I don’t know. All I do know is that this story was incredible. The set up, the plot, the actual story itself, the characters and thé characterization.. Amazing. Sure, it’s paranormal but shit does it feel so goddamn realistic (pardon my French—but not really. It really was just fucking good but you, that’s what you say after cursing.. or something (again ✨dRuNK✨)
“A priest, a psychiatrist, and a demon hunter walk into a gas station”—and no, this is not the start of a bad dad joke. It’s the beginning of a great new story. And sure, I’ve shown my love and appreciation for Clarissa’s storytelling before but I will do so again and again and again.
Anyways—after reading back all of the above, I understand that y’all have no clue what the story is about. And that’s fine. Just read the damn thing. All you need to know is that it’s a paranormal reverse harem, an introduction to a potential larger story 👀 and fucking incredible. Oh and for my smut lovers (me included) this is… really satisfying. Also written from multiple first POVs by the way. So, you know—will 100% recommend.
(Man, drunk reviews are the best)
Disjointed
This was really, really poorly I don't know the correct term, graphic designed? Basically the first few chapters didn't even have chapter 1 etc just a name, then suddenly they had these huge, like too huge, chapter headings with chapter x and name after a few chapters. There was also a lot of I don't know, like lost time? Or like you were expected to knownstuff that hadn't been explained yet. But the point I dnf was 30% in when Trine and Rei had round two the morning after and everything seemed great, she was running her fingers through his hair and asked if they could go for breakfast. There was a page break, like a few missing lines, then suddenly we go from Rei's pov to Trines without warning, and she's fleeing from him and talking about how she's had the worst morning ever and I was so lost. Then we're in a new chapter Misha's pov and Luke is telling him to apologise to Rei for his behaviour towards Trine and outing him as being on the job when he approached her..... but ALL of this is missing! I don't know if it was an editing error where it was accidentally deleted or maybe if I'd read on there might be a flashback. Idk. But I was already struggling to connect with the writing and the characters. There was literally zero world building. Like I say it's like you're supposed to know stuff. The editing/ lack of consistency was off putting. And what seems like an entire chapter of drama missing in the middle of the book was the final straw. So disappointed.
Exorcisms and spice, what's not to love?
This was an interesting story. We have a three man team that goes around investigating potential possessions and doing exorcisms when needed. A priest, a psychiatrist and a social worker turned demonologist. And our main female character was a previous "client" who has some form of amnesia surrounding the period of time she was possessed and during the exorcism. She wants her memories back and they seem to be the only ones with some answers.
This reminded me a little bit of the TV series Evil in that they take on a case and we see them work the case procedurally. While there was spice, and even a threesome, there wasn't much romance, at least not in this first book in this series.
While there was an attraction amongst the characters, there wasn't any real chemistry in my opinion. The real chemistry and only chemistry I noted was between the main female character and someone she keeps meeting up with in her dreams. Whether he is friend or foe, remains to be seen.
I plan to read the next book in order to find out more about this mystery dream man and hopefully get some answers to the many questions posed surrounding her possession. But I'm not heavily invested in these three main male characters as romantic interests to be honest.
Our FMC Trine is a fun sassy bass player in a punk band, and 3 years ago she had an exorcism performed on her.. and remembers nothing from before that. I love that she doesn't give up when she tries to find the answers she has been looking for. She has to face so many dangers, and unknown obstacles that are thrown her way, her feisty attitude will be a great help for that journey.
The 3 men in Trine's life are also the ones who performed the Exocrism. Misha, Luke and Rei so so different but they all work together amazing, Luke our priest, Rei the psychiatrist and Misha the demon hunter. They all want Trine... this will make things interesting.
This book is not without steam, but there's an amazing storyline! I am all for different stories from others that I've never read before. You're pulled into this world that Clarissa wrote for us, and it's a bit dark, plenty of action and so much suspense you'll be on the edge of your seat.
I am curious to see what Trine's mother has to do with us, and what other secrets will be revealed. I know we'll uncover more secrets in the future books, and I can't wait to see what happens!
Audio arc review!
Full disclaimer, this is my first audio book without having read the book first.
And it was so much fun even when I was confused. It's serious and light and horny AF.
I do not recommend listening to this at work.... Oops.
It's not just a priest, a demonhunter, and a psychiatrist. It's daddy, I mean Father. A sparkly jealous broody demon hunter. And another daddy, I mean a hot doctor with glasses. And they're all so hot.
With all these hot dudes you'd think there'd be no plot but holy moly the plot is thick and luscious and dense. Possession is always fun except when it's you. Maybe except when it's Trine, too. All of her confusion, attraction, her I-don't-know-what-to-do vibe is relatable as all get out. I wouldn't know what to do either but she persists through it all.
Now, I was confused for a long time about what was happening. I had never listened to a book with my earballs before reading the book with my eyeballs before and this may not have been the first place to start, the amount of perspectives made it confusing but I still recommend the book and the audio book.
Book is on ku at the time of me writing this! And it's fantastic!
Highly recommend both!
I’m intrigued by the idea of this book but it was a bit convoluted and slow moving. Trine is a bass player in a punk rock band and I love a unique, strong FMC. Misha, Rei and Luke are exorcists in town working on a case. Each of the guys has their own reason for this work but they remain aloof and stand-offish. Trine was a past client and they stop in to check on her. She can’t remember what happened to her or how she became possessed. The guys are cagey about it and she never really gets answers. They ask for her help on their current case which doesn’t go well. In the meantime she hooks up with Rei, then there is MFM with Rei and Misha, Luke remains on the periphery, he is a priest after all, but I can see the series heading into RH territory. There is a question about Trines past that remains unanswered for the next book. There wasn’t much action which caused the book to drag a bit but there were some steamy bits that helped keep my interest.
my first taste of Clarissa Bright, but definitely not the last
This book blew my mind. I was intrigued from the blurb, but reading it, it just kept getting better and better. It was very difficult to put down and live my life, but somehow I’ve managed (barely). I like the characters, the writing is solid, the story is engaging, and I really appreciate the multiple points of view. It makes a fuller story, especially since there are so many gaps for the heroine. Piecing together the past and still being here in the present is like unwrapping one gift to find another one. There’s this sense of wrongness and foreshadowing that permeates. Truly well done. I’m so happy there’s another book after this one and I’m looking forward to starting it momentarily.
Story ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Narration ⭐️⭐️
I really like the story concept and it feels original which is really awesome. I’m looking forward to seeing where this goes.
Female narration is good, except when she does voices for other females. The others all sound like traditional valley girls with different pitches. But on her own I enjoy her voice. The male narrator…just not good at all. He somehow sounds really old and really young all at once. His voice doesn’t make me think of three attractive men. When he voices the priest he seems to slip in and out of random accents sometimes leaning Irish. Just really cringey most of the time.
Again, I really enjoyed the story, just most specifically didn’t enjoy the male narrator
Sinful Urges is the first book in the Five Points series.
WHY DIDN'T I READ THIS SOONER?!?!?!? I am beating myself up for not reading this as soon as I got it. It was lost in my kindle. Luckily, I did FINALLY find it. ANNNYWAYS, I actually enjoyed this so much. When I saw "A priest, a psychiatrist, and a demon hunter walk into a gas station. This is where things get a little weird." In the blurb, I dropped everything and binge read it. I mean, how in the h3ll can you make exorcism so hot?!?!? Not only that, but the sexy, forbidden aspect of these guys. You have a Luke, a priest, Misha, a demonhunter, and Rei, a psychiatrist and the girl all the bad guys want, rocker, Trine.
I soooo added the rest of the series on my TBR list!!
DNF..
Idk what happened but it’s not great when you go from chapter 13 straight to chapter 16 then after chapter 17 it finally pulls up chapter 14. So the story line got all jumbled so after that I decided I would not finish.
Not only that but Trine and Rei do stuff in chapter 12 and then next thing you know in chapter 13 he does something she has never experienced before even though he literally just did it. Like that is annoying how do you forget literally what the whole chapter beforehand had in it?
Then let’s talk about how Trine says in one of the first chapters how she remembers nothing before the exorcism but then when she meets up with 3 MCs she can remember some stuff?
That whole thing was just annoying. It feels poorly written and like no one proofread the book.
Trine is our main goth girl, who gets ALL the men. Sadly, she starts the book possessed by an evil spirit that refuses to leave her alone. Our hunky male main characters were the ones who helped Trine get rid of what was haunting her body, only to find out later in the book that isn't necessarily true.
Each has their own love/lust obsession with Trine they are trying to get under control as they attempt to help her friend, who also has been affected by the same demon hurting Trine. Fyi, the book ends on a cliffy, but I'm desperately waiting to read the next one as this was such a good story with believable characters.
Something Demonic in the State of Florida
Three years ago, Trine was possessed by a demon and exorcised. When her exorcists - priest Luke, psychiatrist Rei and demonhunter Mischa make a follow-up visit, both attraction and new demonic activities brew. While the build is slow, it is so, so good; you can feel that there’s secrets being kept and unknowns to be uncovered, and all I wanted was answers so I just kept reading and reading and getting more engrossed in this story. This one ends on a cliffhanger with no resolution and more questions than answers - I can’t wait for the next one!
What sinful dual narration from Aleksander Papanastasopoulos and Veronica Eastwood. These two bring out the characters, suspense and heat. Perfect
Three years ago, Trine a bass player in a punk band was possessed by a demon and exorcised. When her exorcists Priest Luke, psychiatrist Rei and demon hunter Mischa make contact three years later attraction and new demonic activities start up. The steamy scenes between Trine, Rei and Misha are hot. Will Father Luke will be able to resist temptation? This one ends on a cliffhanger. I can’t wait for the next one!
Ok I think I prefer the other series from this author but in saying that this 100 percent has potential. I like the premise of this storyline and I did find the humour entertaining. I just feel like nothing really happened in this book. I enjoyed the narration, I don’t th8nk I’d heard the male narrator before and he worked in well with this female narrator. I was gifted this audio a wee while ago and got around to this today. I’d continue the series once it’s on audio. I’d like to see the world building reach its potential.
This book was amazingly written well, the author has done a brilliant job with the story and the characters. The characters have great chemistry they work well together, when Misha, Luke and Rei met Trine dealing with her case, they are all intertwined when they work on Tom's case they pull her in with history.
I enjoyed this book and its different story line. Instead of beginning where I expected it was kind of backwards as Trine tries to figure out what really happened and how it all fits in with what is going on now. Lots of questions to be solved, many asked once she realizes what they are. Interesting and fun characters that have secrets yet not really so made for an interesting hot read as get to know them all.
I was grateful to receive an ARC for the audiobook of Sinful Urges in exchange for an honest review!
I really enjoyed this story and plot. The story itself was unique and a completely different take on paranormal/possessions than I have read before. I really enjoyed the characters and the supporting characters. This was my first audiobook and I found the characters voices to be easy to listen to and the pace easy to keep up with. I'm looking forward to seeing where this story goes!
I really enjoyed this story. It drew me in and kept me turning the page waiting to see what happened next. There was a bit of suspense, there was tension, and the characters came alive on the page. I look forward to more in this series!.
Trine finally meets the three men that performed her exorcism. Rei, Misha, and Luke were not expecting to fall for Trine when they came back to check on her. Trine never expected to fall for them either.
This was an EXCELLENT beginning to this new series and I cannot wait to read more!!.
A priest, a psychiatrist, and a demon hunter walk into a gas station...you would think this is a start of a joke not a book. I loved the characters on this paranormal RH romance. It is well written where I liked the development in plot. Misha, Luke, Rei and Trine are intriguing characters. I am excited for the next book.
The idea is very intriguing. I mean 3 hot guys one girl. And the guys are into saving the world by banishing one demon at a time. Supernatural vibes? Definitely.
But the writing was kind of garbled. The story was so back and forth, and kind of boring. Spice was.....meh.
Yes intriguing. But not enough for me to spend more money on buying the rest of the series to see how it turns out.
Mixed feelings.
Definitely different and I liked the story and dynamics. It’s not an RH, it’s one MFM scene and a more why choose feel.
In serious need of editing, too many he said, she said, rather than flowing dialogue. Some areas seemed written a little over simple, and it can take away from the atmosphere of the book.
But really did enjoy the storyline and the authors effort.
Great first book!
This book was fantastic. Great plot development. Full and fun characters. I really enjoyed the elements of demons and how it’s working in this world. I’m excited to see what everyone finds out in book 2.
The story was disjointed for me. I felt that there was no cohesiveness to it. I liked the idea of the story and if it was cleaned up a bit would be a 5 star for sure.
