Diane Morris is thirsty for a break from chasing down supernatural threats. Life as a Special Agent in the Department of Intangible Assets is a perilous one, and Diane is more than happy to spend more time with her girlfriend and avoid the kinds of life-threatening situations her career throws at her. It’s bad enough her partner is a bored, terrifying demon, but so long as she gets to stay behind her desk and shuffle paperwork, Diane’s content to live a boring life.
When two of her fellow DIA agents go missing in small town Wickston, Diane begrudgingly finds herself thrown into a smoldering conflict between a witches’ coven and a fledgling cult. With both sides holding the other responsible for a rash of missing persons, Diane and her otherworldly partner Archades find themselves drawn deeper into a conspiracy spanning decades. Creatures lurk in the dark shadows of moonlit orchards, sinister puppeteers hide in plain sight on Main Street. Cut off with no hope of relief, Diane has to make a choice between playing things safe or uncovering the truth of the idyllic Georgia town’s murky history. One may risk her life, but the other risks so much more.
Robert Gainey is a born and raised Floridian, despite his best efforts. While enrolled at Florida State University and studying English (a language spoken in several small countries), Robert began volunteering for the campus medical response team, opening up a great new passion in his life. Following graduation, he pursued further training through paramedic and firefighting programs, going on to become a full time professional firefighter in the State of Florida. He currently lives and works in Northeast Florida with his wife and dogs, who make sure he gets walked regularly. Robert writes near-fetched fantasy novels inspired by the madness and courage found in everyday events.
I LOVED this book! The characters were great, the writing was well done, the story was well paced.
My only gripe is that I didn't know it was the second book in a series until about halfway through when it mentioned a previous dragon and I remembered seeing the author having only one other book on here that had dragon in the title. I felt silly, but was already halfway through, so I finished it and will now be sprinting to the first book!!!
Special Agent Diane Morris is back for another thrill-a-minute whodunit! This time the jaded, underfunded, ballsy heroine is bouncing through the backwoods of Georgia with her not-so-trusted sidekick and a barely functional government-issued vehicle.
Gainey’s now familiar wry voice and quippy story of supernatural foes and treacherous follies reminds us that the thin line between our world and the other side may be thinner and less protected than we would hope.
A fun, adventurous read that you won’t put down until the last pun is read and the last otherworldly villain vanquished.
I read this book on vacation overlooking the Rhein in Germany and it definitely gave me the feeling of small town America. The characters are good and interesting stereotypes of people I’ve met a hundred times in small Oklahoma towns. And then each is twisted on further inspection into an entirely new kind of character that fits into this world. It reminds me of the best episodes of Supernatural, X-Files and the good stuff from Dresden without any of the downtime and baggage that came with those IPs.
I am really looking forward to seeing Archades at 50%. Bring on the third book!

I enjoyed the characters and the real world problems (no resources at work!) intertwined with the supernatural. I started with this book (thanks for my free copy) but did not feel lost while reading. I will go back to read the first and I'm looking forward to more books in the series in the future.
The quick paced action, with the mix of interesting characters makes this a want to turn the page work. Interactions of different threats, woven into the story line kept me wanting more. Looking forward to the future problems faced by the DIA agents, and the seat of her pants solutions !
This was a clever, well-written, entertaining book. Although I realized there was a book before this that I missed, there was enough information to understand what I needed to know in this book but not so much that I feel like I can skip reading the previous book (which I certainly want to read). A good mix of mystery and paranormal elements with a main character I really liked. She worked so hard to do her job! The other characters were good too. I highly recommend. (I reserve 5 stars for favorites, which are usually books I reread.) I won a free copy of this book in a Goodreads Giveaway.
Another first rate story. I found it better than the first Agent Diane Morris adventure, Dragon(E) Baby Gone. Too bad Goodreads only gives readers the option of five stars! Hands down my favorite part is mid book when a meeting takes place in the Wickston town library. Won’t provide more details for fear I would spoil future readers’ fun. Suffice to say I read that section more than once and laughed out loud every time.
