The current trends toward mafia/bratva/ mean that authors whose past work featured mild, consensual DD are jumping on those trains and now writing "dark." Now, I don't particularly like "dark" (what a hopelessly vague and too broad term) since it usually means non-consensual, but some authors do write it well. Others, such as this one, do not: the characters and dialogue are unsubtle, and, other than the fact that the discipline (which is actually pretty mild for this genre) is initially non-consensual and the language crude, I wouldn't call this particularly "dark," erotic, or interesting. Authors: It's really better to write to your strengths rather than to simply try whatever is currently in vogue and you hope will sell.

It's also off-putting that, though Mia is a virgin, Brendan immediately starts implementing BDSM practices such as butt plugs and ass-f*cking before he even has vaginal sex with her. And then there's the double-standard regarding language: he can swear, but she can't.

I'm really rating this so poorly, however, because the H is the h's superior in the workplace and he punishes her there -- completely undermining her authority as a professional and thus making her ineffective at her job (the man she's interviewing knows that she's been punished). In the 21st century, in the Me-Too movement, it's no longer possible to suspend disbelief regarding this or to admire any H for doing something so profoundly unethical and illegal. There are certain subjects that are no longer sexy even in this genre, and one of them is workplace sexual harassment. In fact, it's against the law; it's destroyed far too many women's careers; and all you're doing is normalizing it. Finally, Mia is also presented as being bad at her job (she plays no part in ), while the men around her are not. The author calls her "intelligent, strong-willed," but nowhere do we see evidence of that -- particularly when she caves at her first spanking and she makes no objections when the men make all her life choices for her. Authors: You do realize that you can't just throw descriptive words around: you need to back them up with actions.

If the above doesn't bother you, and if you're not really expecting "dark," you might like this better than I did. I'm really tired of DD and BDSM books that fundamentally support a sexist, misogynist, patriarchal agenda when neither practice has to be like that (even DD/lg books often distinguish between the professional woman at work and the little girl at home) and BDSM, in particular, often tries to work against traditional gender roles by making them about play or including dominant women, submissive men, and those who self-identify as either queer or transgender. This is a profoundly conservative and reactionary book (the "little woman" needs to be protected, can't do her job, and is incapable of making her own decisions) -- ultimately too much so for my taste.

What a waste of time. It was a terrible paranormal story, a dull thriller and a hideous dark romance. I think that dark doesn’t mean coercion. I believe that a police lieutenent and a FBI agent have the same rank. So I didn’t get the reason he acted as her superior and how he could humiliate her in the working environment. He assumed she was submissive but never has her approval. In my book that is manipulation. Suddenly she is no longer an adult but an idiot. The age gap between them, the nonsensical reasons for the punishments, the irrelevant plot, etc. As I said before what a waste of time! First and last I read something from this author. Fortunately it was KU. I wouldn’t pay for it.

A Suspense filled read….
This was a riveting read that took me as the reader on a very dark and absorbed read that held my attention from start to finish. I started the book and was not able to put it down until I completed the whole book in one sitting fortunately for me it was a short read.
This was a read filled with sexual relationship between Lieutenant Brendan Norris and Mia Gates the extremely competent FBI agent, she was an expert that dealt with the expert behaviour analyst and when Mia discovers that Brendan is expecting her to lay down any rules he puts in action to ensure her safety, her failure to adhere to such agreed guidelines would be disciplined via her backside using Brendan’s hand and there would be no id, and or but he would ensure she learned to listen and keep herself safe.
Brendan wants to make her his Mate, keep her at his side forever as his beautiful mate however he would have to turn her first, |he might have been a lone wolf but since she has come into his life he had started to think along the line of love, a Mate and if they are fortunate enough a family?

Brendan was a string male character that was not afraid to stand up for those he cared about and keep them as safe as possible, his need the primal side of his nature was always aware of Mia and as well as wanting to ensure her safety he was also learning about himself and how his life would change with a Mate, a strong willed, intelligent and beautiful female.

If he was honest neither he or his inner wolf could wait to make her all theirs, they simply had to help her to feel the same way…

I voluntarily received and review an Advanced Reader Copy
I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to reading any future publications; keep up all the great writing.

This book was a NO for me on a number of levels. A significantly older man, who happened to be the 24 year old virginal FBI agent's superior, enter into a relationship (not sure if it was supposed to be DD, D/s a little, or what) that was non consensual. I never read where Mia gave her "willing" consent. She just seemed to go along for the ride. Brendan was her boss, and he was a little rough with her for her to be a virgin. I guess that is what made it dark, although I'm not sure about that.

To me, it seemed more like coercion. I guess Mia could have said no, but with their age difference, it felt a little more manipulative. Not to mention, completely inappropriate being her boss. She seemed desperate for what he was demanding from her. I could even see if it was one agent to another, or if they were different departments maybe, but on the same level and had the same supervisor.

Then, it just got weird. There was a twist thrown in that wasn't a surprise. There were too many hints given (whether intended or not) for it to be surprising once revealed. I didn't see the purpose for even adding that aspect into the book. It was strange.

This book felt like two or three different genres were picked and thrown together in a book however someone thought they would best fit. Just strange. This book never came together for me. I can say that it was a very quick read. I would never tell anyone not to read a book. I would have been fine if I had never read this one.

This fast paced story combines a number of genres in a very effective way. Yes it’s a Dark Romance, but it also has a Mafia connection, an FBI connection, some D/s and even a (very minor) paranormal connection. It sounds a little convoluted, but it really does work. Trust is the big focal point of the plot, can Brendan trust Mia to toe the line and who can Mia and Brendan trust with their lives? A well-crafted story with an ending you won’t easily forecast. There is also an abundance of sensuous punishments, some very graphic sex, and a delightful finish. 5 Stars

This is a veritable clown car of romance tropes, what with the shifter-daddy dom-FBI agent in a Mafia story and all.

Red-Hot Romance

Right from the start the chemistry between Mia and Brendan is electric, and it doesn’t take long for the romance between the young FBI agent and her handsome lieutenant to burst into flames. At the same time that Mia’s partner (who is really a wolf) takes it upon himself to teach her a variety of painful lessons about obeying rules, his keen sense of smell lets him know just how aroused she is by his love and care for her safety. But reader beware: this fast- paced paranormal crime drama will take some sharp turns as dark cravings, domination, deception, animal lust and true love make it one scorching hot read that I highly recommend!
