Pōneke Shadows Book 1 Vampires and werewolves live long lives. The Sleepless City saga might have ended but the story continues... Someone is hunting supernaturals. Vampire Simon Hawthorne and his human partner Ben Leyton's plans for a peaceful holiday with family are hijacked by the New Zealand Supernatural Council. Tensions are on the rise in Wellington. Supernatural councillors are disappearing. Werewolves are suspicious of anyone human or vampire. If they don't work together, their enemy has already won. And no one with a connection to the supernatural world is safe.
Anne Barwell lives in Wellington, New Zealand. She shares her home with two cats who are convinced that the house is run to suit them; this is an ongoing "discussion," and to date it appears as though the cats may be winning.
In 2008 she completed her conjoint BA in English Literature and Music/Bachelor of Teaching. She has worked as a music teacher, a primary school teacher, and now works in a library. She is a member of the Upper Hutt Science Fiction Club and plays violin for Hutt Valley Orchestra.
She is an avid reader across a wide range of genres and a watcher of far too many TV series and movies, although it can be argued that there is no such thing as "too many." These, of course, are best enjoyed with a decent cup of tea and further the continuing argument that the concept of "spare time" is really just a myth.
Professor Simon Hawthorne and soulbond mate, photographer Ben Leyton are having their yearly argument again. Simon is getting ready for another anniversary of his turning to a vampire. Ben has already been marked by Simon but Ben has very good reasons for wanting to be turned. One reason is, the anniversary makes Simon contagious and separates him and Ben for many days, which is difficult for them both. But Simon also has his own personal fears about turning Ben. The Boggslake for Humans (BFH), are more than just a threat. The hostile group not only kills supernaturals but innocent humans too. Stubborn, Jacob Coates, head of the Supernatural Council, won’t make a move on BFH because there’s no proof of what BFH has done. With the BFH not being shut down, its curtailed Simon from his plan for him and Ben.
Simon had encouraged Ben to reduce his hours at the Boggslake PD, where he works an investigative photographer. This gives Ben more time to focus on his own personal talent as a photographer. He has the opportunity to show his works through Daphne Waterhouse at Waterhouse Gallery. Ben arrives at the gallery and finds himself in extreme danger. With Ben and Simons’ connection, Simon now faces one of his deepest fears. Even with the help of Violet a ghost child, Anita and Charlotte Coates, two new members of the Boggslake Supernatural Investigation, all doesn’t exactly end well.
Once the horrors of the BFH have now been handled, it frees Simon to make his commitment to Ben. Their plans take them to Wellington, New Zealand to meet Ben’s parents. After the long flight, Simon had scheduled nourishment to be delivered on their layover in Auckland. But what they got was trouble. Three of the New Zealand Supernatural Council approach Simon and Ben. Simon and especially Ben put them on notice that they are not there to work for anyone. As rude, arrogant and threatening as the councillors are, they explain to Simon and Ben that councillors have been disappearing. For Ben and Simon this raises all types of questions. What is the fate of the missing? Is this the actions of the BFH or something bigger? Are Ben and Simon being used by the Council? As the questions keep coming, Simon and Ben get deeper involved.
On top of all the chaos, it’s nerve wrecking for Simon as he’s meeting his in-laws for the first time, decisions will be made and life will change for both Simon and Ben.
Anne Barwell brings readers a new series with Ben Leyton and Simon Hawthorne. “Double Exposure” is the debut book for “Poneke Shadows” series, set in New Zealand and Ben’s home town of Wellington, where Simon get’s to meet the in-laws. Not only is meeting the in-laws nerve wrecking but Ben and Simon are put in the middle of a supernatural case of disappearances. This new story is very well written, it has suspense, danger, romance and is full of surprises.
The author also brings an abundance of characters from New Zealand and returning characters from the “Sleepless City” series. Ben’s best friend Ange Duncan is back with her ability to see ghosts. She introduces: Josh McKenna, who has a secret and friends Ennis and Cody. Detective Garrick Frater, is with the Wellington PD and Father Elard Reith of Newton. Ben Leytons family: Parents Ray and Abby, married sister Maddie and husband Trent and sister Tash a detective. The adorable Granddad Frank. He is such fun and enjoys every minute of having his grandson Ben and friend Simon stay with him. I wish he could live forever!
There’s the new members of Boggslake Supernatural Investigative team - Boggs will always be there along with Charlie and Anita Coates. It’s always fun to hear from Blair and Jonas Forge, Lucas Coates and Declan, now known as the Vampire Guard.
If vampires, werewolves, ghosts and humans intrigue you, I highly suggest reading “The Sleepless City” collaboration by Anne Barwell and Elizabeth Noble. It’s the introduction of Simon and Ben and other inhabitants of Boggs Castle.
As for “Double Exposure” it is a fantastic spin-off and start to the “Poneke Shadows” series. I’m sure with a new environment and new characters Anne Barwell will be putting Simon and Ben in exciting and new supernatural situations. I’m hooked and can’t wait for the next book!
Reviewed for Love Bytes – 3.5 Hearts Ben, Simon, and a group of paranormal beings work together to protect their citizens. Unfortunately, there’s a group intent on murdering supernatural beings. While Ben and Simon are on their honeymoon, their expertise is requested. Double Exposure is the first book in a new series. However, the same characters were used in the Sleepless City Saga. Judging from the opening chapters, I believe it would be beneficial to have read the previous story, as throughout, I felt as though I was missing a piece of the puzzle that made up this world. By reading previous manuscripts, I’d have had more of an immersive experience in this world, gotten more out of this paranormal mystery, and most likely given it a higher rating. The story is told in the third person from mostly Ben’s viewpoint. The world-building was good, and it made a lovely change to have the location in New Zealand. However, there are several instances where multiple characters were introduced at once, and I found the experience daunting. This is also one of the areas that I felt reading the previous novels would be an advantage. Throughout, rightly or wrongly, I felt on the outskirts of backstories that were more in-depth elsewhere. The opening chapters were awesome, with some dramatic action events that showcased the supernatural world. Then again, the humans were pretty spectacular too. Simon is the kick-ass vampire who is totally at the mercy of his human, Ben – the dynamic was adorable. Shout out here for Tash – Ben’s straight-talking human detective sister. There were some lovely tender moments too. Simon’s nervousness at revealing certain aspects of his nature to Ben’s kin is understandable. After a while, though, the phrase - tell the family - gets somewhat monotonous, loses some of its potency, and dulls the event's effect when it actually happens. Double Exposure is a story that had an excellent beginning, an investigative middle with pockets of action and an end that was appropriate for the story, albeit, I would have preferred some action from an event that promised more and was glossed over. More finishing action would have balanced out the two ends of the story. I enjoyed it, but having not read the previous books, I was missing an element that would have ensured a higher rating. So given that the hearts I’ve put indicates a good book, above average, imaging what it would have been if I’d been privy to the other saga.
This book was provided free in exchange for a fair and honest review for Love Bytes.
This story picks up where Ben and Simon are left behind after Shifting Chaos (the last book in The Sleepless City series) and the rest of their old team go join the The Vampire Guard. I was saddened at the time to see Ben and Simon get left out of that series, so when both Elizabeth Noble and Anne Barwell announced they were revamping their joint series and Ms. Barwell announced a new series for Ben & Simon, I was thrilled.
~ That said, I do recommend reading The Sleepless City series first. Though this book does stand on it's own, you might get more out of it if read in context with the other series. ~ ------ ------ Poneke Shadows find our pair in Wellington, New Zealand for a second wedding in front of Ben's family and a bit of a honeymoon. Their hopes for a calm, quiet, honeymoon get tossed out the window when the local Supernatural Council approach them to solve the disappearance of the Wellington Supernatural Council. A human only rights group with dangerous intentions has started making trouble in the area and it's a race against time to stop a disaster for the local werewolf pack, among other things.
Ben and Simon are as good a team as ever, bringing in new people into their orbit without half trying, since Ange, Ben's best friend, refuses to be left out, Ben's family get drawn in after they learn Simon's a vampire and take it in stride, for the most part, and others who have a stake in the game step up to help. Though one of the main players in the human only rights group escapes, the plan is foiled.
Though there were a few places in the text where a bit more exposition would be nice to beef up the story, I enjoyed getting to know Ben's family, learning a little bit about NZ, and Simon finally getting the family he deserves (in addition to the family he found in the first series). I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.
Ben and Simon have such a great relationship, so to see it going to another level is awesome.
Anne Barwell has a new release today!!!! I must begin this review by telling you the back story to her newest book Double Exposure. I have been a fan of hers for quite a sometime. We were introduced to Anne Barwell and Elizabeth Noble a few years ago. These two wonderful authors decided to write a series, to not take on the responsibilities of combing their skills into one book like others. They took upon a different idea. While Ms. Barwell wrote Book# 1 and #3 ; Ms. Noble wrote book #2 and# 4 to write a wonderful four book series called The Sleepless City , for which they have been nominated for numerous awards. Today’s new release is a new series spinoff continuing the lives of Simon and Ben in their next life’s adventure. At this point of their lives, this happy couple has decided marriage is in their future. Living in Boggslake surrounded by all their friends would be the acceptable choice. But Ben’s family and friends and memories are in Wellington, New Zealand. Deciding to have two ceremonies is the best plan, off they fly to Ben’s hometown for a quiet service and quiet honeymoon so Simon can meet the family. As you can imagine Simon is fearful of telling the family he is a Vampire……Good Grief!! The discussions between he and Ben talking about turning Ben has been on the table for a while now and decisions need to be made. When you are married to someone who lives for hundreds of years it is hard for both parties. The Vampire, who has to lose a love as they watch them grow old and die, for the human watching themselves grow old and their partner remaining young. Stress ,stress!!! Besides this quandary, Simon is asked to help the New Zealand Supernatural Council who are struggling and need ‘a moments help’…. That moments help, almost killing them and other members of the family…. As always with her books Anne Barwell keeps the spotlight on her story, yet the characters are spotlighted and always centre court. Now I will ask……Will this be shared again with Ms. Nobel or will this series be hers alone….. Always a 5 Star read for me…This no exception
🌏Thought it was beginning, but only start in new location🙁
3.5🌟 stars I chose to pick up this MM paranormal romantic adventure because of the New Zealand setting. I assumed that it was the beginning of a series and I was getting in at the start. I quickly discovered the main characters had a well-established story in a separate series set in Ohio and this was the continuation in Ben's hometown Wellington, the capital of New Zealand. It took me longer than anticipated to finish and was not as easy a read as I had hoped because of the frequent references to characters and events from the earlier series. But ultimately it turned out pretty good, especially when the villains' main plan was uncovered and the action picked up. Ben's whole family ends up joining Ben and Simon in their adventure.
I would characterize this as a murder mystery, suspense adventure in a world where werewolves, vampires and ghosts cohabitate with mostly unsuspecting humans. It has romantic overtones but, since the human Ben and vampire Simon are already a stable couple, the plot is centered on the shakeup in the New Zealand paranormal community and their reluctant co-opting into the investigation. There's some heat and romantic bits too. Quite a few characters to keep straight.
Would I read more in this series? Possibly, now that I have been initiated into the characters and world Barwell has created for Ben and Simon.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.
I thought I could go in and read this book as a standalone, but unfortunately, there were places where I felt lost. So, really, do yourself a favor and read the previous series first.
That said, Ben and Simon were very likable characters, and it was obvious they belonged together. They had amazing chemistry and I loved seeing them interact with their friends and family. What I missed was seeing them falling in love since they are an established couple here.
This is a murder mystery, some members of the Supernatural Council are disappearing and Simon and Ben are helping the Council find out who's behind it all while trying to keep it all from Ben's family who doesn't know that Simon is a vampire.
The book was interesting, fast-paced, and engaging. I would've preferred to have a bit more background info, but by the time I realized I needed to read the two books in the series Double Exposure spin-offs from, it was too late for me to finish on time. Even so, I have no trouble recommending it.
*** Copy provided to Bayou Book Junkie for my reading pleasure, a review wasn't a requirement. ***
I enjoyed this spin off from the Sleepless City series. The storyline was engaging and the introduction of new characters was interesting. I have to say I really miss Lucas, Forge et al from the origin series though.
The story arc moves well and since this is a spin off we know these characters pretty well so not a lot of character development is necessary. Of course if this becomes an ongoing series we’ll need more character development for some of the people mentioned here. I want to know more about Garrett and there’s obviously something up with Uncle Martin. Elard is also a character I’m curious about.
The suspense part of the story is a bit similar to what happened in Boggs Lake with a human terrorist organization trying to rid the world of supernatural creatures. And of course we have another Supernatural Council that has its own agenda and is not above blackmail as well as a pack leadership that doesn’t want to cooperate. Similar environment to what existed in Boggs Lake.
There are quite a few balls left in the air in this book so I hope the next book arrives soon.
This is book one in this series but a spinoff of another so I do suggest reading Shades of Sepia and that series though you can read this as a stand alone once you figure out the basics like Simon and Ben’s soul bond and the council. Then things kinda fall in place.
This book takes place when Simon is in a contagious phase and Ben is wanting him to turn him. … but before they really get to discuss it a case falls at their feet with a dead human, dead vampire and Ben shot. They decide to get married and have a ceremony at the castle with their friends. Of course Ben’s family wants to be part of the wedding so they are going to New Zealand to marry in front of his family and tell them Simon secret. Of course it’s never that easy.
I really like the world Ann has built and the supernatural rules and council. I loved the characters, the suspense was good and there was a lot of twists. If your looking for a good paranormal romance with mystery and suspense this is for you though I recommend reading the other series starting with Shades of Sepia.
Ben Leyton, human, and Simon Hawthorne, vampire, are planning a peaceful trip to visit with Ben’s family in New Zealand so they can repeat their vows with them present. Unfortunately, their quiet vacation is interrupted by the New Zealand Supernatural Council. It seems someone is hunting and killing supernaturals as well as those close to them. Solving this will require all hands on deck. The werewolves, though, have trouble trusting. They need to help if they are to succeed.
The love these two have is a thing of beauty. They found that love in a different series, The Sleepless City. References are made to this and it would help but is not necessary to read the other series as well. The plot was well done with plenty of suspense and twists and unexpected danger. Your interest is piqued right away and kept throughout the unfolding of the story and plot. There are also quite a few shake ups and this should lead to some great reading in the future.
Okay so I didn't realize that this was a spin-off when I requested the book, but I did read Shades of Sepia where Ben & Simon meet & fall in love. At some point I really need to go back & finish the other series. Anyway, we have Ben & Simon heading to New Zealand to have a second wedding so that Ben's family can be a part of & having their honeymoon. One the way, Simon gets roped into investigating the disappearance of members of the Supernatural Council. What neither expected was the way that the vampires, werewolves & humans did want anything to do with the others. On top of this, Ben's family doesn't know about the supernatural & Simon is worried on how they are going to take him being a vampire. I loved getting to know Ben's family. I also enjoyed the investigation. Our boys work so well together. Though a big part of the Human Only Rights nut jobs getting taken down, the leader gets away. I can't wait for the next book in the series.
I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest opinion
Double Exposure is the start of a new series Poneke Shadows series. Double Exposure is a really good story but I felt lost in the beginning, I didn’t realize that it’s an off shoot of another series so I would recommend reading that series first. I’ll go back and read that soon. I really like Ben and Simon. They had so much love for each other. They had differences but they also communicated. I also really loved the found family aspect of the story. They learn there is a new threat as they try to navigate the supernatural community all the while dealing with a possible war between extremists. I loved the mystery of who's killing the supernaturals in Wellington! Ben. and Simon are surrounded by a fantastic group of secondary characters. Overall, Double Exposure is a really good story! Well written with nice pacing! Highly recommend.
I've enjoyed Anne Barwell's historical romances immensely and here she proves equally adept at paranormal stories. I love a series where there are all sorts of plots and schemes circling around our main characters and they are struggling to determine exactly what is going on and who can and cannot be trusted. Simon and Ben are definitely in that situation here. The mystery and machinations make for a strong story but on top of that we get a deepening of Ben and Simon's relationship and the stress of meeting Ben's parents. The book is perfectly balanced between the romance and the mystery plot. Very much look forward to more in this series.
Interesting! The love story in the center of this book is wrapped up in the mystery of who’s killing supernaturals in Wellington. Simon and Ben have been asked to look into it. The bad blood between werewolves, vampires, and humans is really hampering them. I really like Ben. He’s smart enough to figure out the scheme that would have killed most of the werewolves, just in time. Simon isn’t just the overprotective vamp, he’s the sharp investigator. There’s lots of great characters set in a charming town, with Ben’s awesome family. Plenty of love and acceptance to go around!
This is the continuation of the story of Simon and Ben and also the first book in the New Poneke Shadows. I would suggest that you read the Sleepless City series where you meet Simon and Ben for the first time. I love that this series continues with them and you can see how they develop. It is written really well with fantastic secondary characters. Mystery, suspense and action keeps you at the edge of the seat and turning the pages. Definitely recommended.
I received this book as an Arc and I am voluntarily reviewing it.
Enjoyable read from a new-to-me author. I didn't realize at first that this is a spin-off from an existing series that I have not read, so I felt like I missed some history for the MCs. It was still a good story with some mystery, suspense, and family issues for the established couple of Ben and Simon. I do wish I had read the preceding series first, but this was still an enjoyable start to what I think will be an interesting and engaging series, and now that I know more about Ben and Simon, I am all in.
I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.
I enjoy it when books are set in other countries, so I wanted to read and review Double Exposure. Before I begin the review, I do recommend reading the other series The Sleepless City, because Ben and Simon do have a past, something I wasn’t aware of, and you might get a bit lost because of that.
First, the stakes are high in this story. I won’t get into what’s been said in the blurb. The story takes place in New Zealand, and Ben and Simon are there for a second wedding and their honeymoon. Plus, Simon has to meet Ben’s family.
I was so happy to see Ben and Simon's story continuing! They're headed off to Wellington to have their 2nd wedding with Ben's family. And we see that "normal" for them will always include supes and the council. Never a dull moment and I think they like it that way. We see Ben's amazing family, accepting and supportive of them both, much to the surprise of Simon. Cant wait o see what's next.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy provided by GayRomanceReviews
Enjoyable introductory story to a spin-off series I am looking forward to reading. I’ve not read the original series and I thought this worked well as a stand-alone. There were references to other characters that I’m sure would have meant more but it wasn’t overwhelming or confusing to me. I’m off to read the origin story now and anticipate more of Ben/Simon in New Zealand soon! (I hope Cody returns so Josh can have his HEA)
I wanted this book to be longer! I found myself engaged with Ben and Simon and their relationship, the friends, and their troubles when they travel to New Zealand to celebrate their wedding a second time with Ben's family.
I enjoyed the complications of Kiwi supernatural society as it dealt with a rash of disappearances and deaths of local werewolves and vampires. Are there other supernaturals, I wonder ....
A good mystery, a charming love story, a good read indeed.
He is a vampire working with a human and they are hoping for a quiet holiday but they are not going to be so lucky. Supernatural councillors are disappearing and they will need to get the werewolves to work with them to solve the crime. Can it work? Who is behind it all? Life is about to take an unusual turn
I tried this having read one or two other Anne Barwell books and if I’m honest I enjoyed it more than I expected to. Also being honest I did find it a little predictable. There were, for me), no surprises and everything played out the way I anticipated with its HFN/HEA ending.
I was unaware of the previous series before reading this book but that didn’t really hamper my enjoyment of it. I just missed out on how these two met and their previous escapades. That being said, the series has been added to my TBR pile towards the top. Simon and Ben were delightful. These two are so in love, despite their differences and the dangers they face. They talk about stuff instead of letting it deter, or at least they give it their best shot. #couplegoals I adored Ben’s family and the way they accepted them both with no hesitation. Found family is one of my favorite tropes. As Simon and Ben try to navigate the supernatural politics of Ben’s hometown, they learn of a new threat and find themselves fighting to stave off a war between extremists and the supernatural community as well as between the community members themselves. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to seeing what happens with them and their allies as the rest of the series unfolds. Things are truly safe for them yet but I think this couple can handle it.
we are back with 2 characters that i think love to have argument and love the make up. but when things start to take a twist it will change things. love the new outlook of the characters in Boggslake
I read this book because the blurb caught me and I was not disappointed. The plot was agile and interesting, the backstory was captivating and the bond and deep love between Simon and Ben was so perfect and endearing. Even if the series is a spin-off of another one, you don’t need to read it before to understand everything even if the familiarity of many of the characters made me want to read what happened before. A great start of this new series! Loved it!
A good story, full of intrigue and action. It was very easy to read with good character and plot development. I liked how the relationship building between Ben and Simon developed. It does a good job in setting up the next story.
If you like supernatural romances, you'll like this.
