Dik Browne was born Richard Arthur Allan Browne in New York City. He was a popular cartoonist, best known for writing and drawing Hägar the Horrible and for drawing Hi and Lois.
In the 1940s he worked as an illustrator for Newsweek as well as for an advertising company, where he created the trademark logo for Chiquita.
In 1954 Browne and cartoonist Mort Walker co-created the comic strip Hi and Lois, a spin-off of Walker's popular Beetle Bailey strip, featuring Beetle's sister, brother-in-law, and their family. Walker wrote the strip, which Browne illustrated until his death. The series is now drawn by his son Chance and written by Walker's sons. In 1973 Browne created Hägar the Horrible about an ill-mannered red-bearded medieval viking. The comic is now produced by his son Chris. Both strips have been very successful, appearing in hundreds of newspapers each for decades.
He was recognized for his work by the National Cartoonist Society with their Humor Comics Strip Award in 1959, 1960, 1972, and 1977 for Hi and Lois, and again in 1984 and 1986 for Hägar the Horrible. He also received their Reuben Award for Hi and Lois in 1962, for Hägar the Horrible in 1973, and their Elzie Segar Award in 1973. He died in Sarasota, Florida.
In reviewing these Comicana Books collections of various comic strips, I'm often at a loss as to where to begin. Usually with a review, the best way to begin is to familiarize readers with the strip, describe the setup, talk about the characters, etc. But, with circulations of 1500 papers and up (as of the mid 80's when these books were published) I have a difficult time imagining a reader who 1) knows generally what newspaper comic strips are (less of a surety now than it was in the 80's), but 2) has never seen--in this case--Hagar the Horrible. Some comic strips are just ubiquitous, and one pretty much has to not read comics at all to be unfamiliar with them. You might as well try to imagine someone who hasn’t read Peanuts. Hypothetically speaking, they must exist, but their numbers are almost certainly statistically insignificant.
So: Hagar, arguably the world's best known cartoon Viking. As such, he’s easy to take for granted. But he’s a character for the ages. He can be childish and impulsive, prone to overindulgence (especially when it comes to food), but always with a certain loveable impishness. Despite the fantasy setting, he is at heart a working man. He catches the morning longboat to spend a hard day of fighting and pillaging, but then it's home in the evening to his family. He and his wife, Helga, may argue from time to time, but they are ultimately equal, loving partners. His son, Hamlet, baffles him with his gentle, civilized nature and love of reading, but he does try to be a good father. Despite the fantasy setting, he remains a very relatable character.
It helps that Dik Browne is an amazing artist. Hagar may look simple and cartoony, but there's a lot of expressiveness in those lines. Just look at some of the more fantastic details, such as when Browne draws dragons or gnarled, dark forests. Heck, look at some of the advertising work he was doing before Mort Walker brought him in as the artist for Hi and Lois back in the 50's--a selection of such work is reprinted in this book. Or look at some of the drawings he did for family Christmas cards and the like--also included in this book. The Best of Hagar the Horrible is as much a celebration of Dik Browne himself as it is of one of his best known creations. Highly recommended!
Here’s the second of two lucky finds in the library sale room from a few weeks back (I assume someone offloading from Sarasota). Hägar’s another undervalued treasure from the comics page in these later days. Great to revisit and reminisce.
