4.5 stars. I liked how this series ended. It was creative and different but fully keeping in with the rest of the series. The girls are amazing in their savage season.
If high school is a series of embarrassing moments leading to graduation, the girls of the Literature Club have certainly decided to shoot the moon. Holed up in the school with Milo-sensei as a hostage, a protest of an unfair expulsion has brought them all together again. With so much on the line, are the girls going to be able mend fences and save the day?
This series has basically been centred on the fact that growing up is hard to do and it doesn’t veer from that at the end. Instead it shows the hardship but also the benefits that come with maturity.
I’ve never been the hugest fan of Hongo’s story with Milo-sensei. I think he had her interests at heart but couldn’t have gone about it much worse. Still, she really leaps to the fore in this volume and proves quite clever at helping everybody figure things out. That she doesn’t get exactly what she wants from Milo-sense, but does get what she needs, is a nice touch.
I also really appreciated the way the sort-of triangle between Kazusa, Izumi, and Sugawara gets resolved (yes I am mixing first and last names and that is deliberate, sorry). It leads to a real moment between Kazusa and Izumi and what I would consider a legit sign of growth from Izumi, recognizing that certain types of desire exist and where his fall along the spectrum and in terms of his relationships. It’s probably the most mature part of the book.
I guess Momoko and Sugawara sort of have an understanding now. It’s a bummer because I think Momoko deserved a lot more given what she’s going through upon realizing she’s a lesbian. There’s an offhand comment that maybe she’s just confused which I didn’t love that I hope I am just reading wrong, but it still feels like her story has a tapering off rather than a conclusion.
Sonezaki has the least to do, largely because she’s been expelled and also because her story has sort of been done for a bit. She gets some cute moments with her boyfriend and then at the end. It is pretty neat to see how far she’s made it though, compared to those first couple volumes.
And I do like the final moments as the girls come up with a plan, though it’s a pretty quick resolution to the problem. It does lead to a very sweet group shot and nice revelation, although the whole time I was watching the outcome I couldn’t help but think - ‘has nobody ever heard of social media before?’.
This was a good, solid finale. It’s not perfect, I think they leave a little too much to twist in the wind without a resolution, and that final line feels like a nudge-nudge-wink-wink too far, but it certainly wasn’t a disappointment. It was a very fun take on a coming of age story and I think it captures the complexity of youth quite well.
4.25 Can’t ever get enough of Mari Okada’s writing. Slots in right next to Golden Time and Toradora as a story that takes the angst of adolescence seriously. And Nao Emoto is putting in the work. Warning: you must be a fan of claustrophobic close ups
This was a phenomenal end to a short, sweet, but satisfying series!
I don't want to say a whole lot due to spoilers, but this could have easily gone off the rails but it managed to stay on track. There confrontations, tears, and heartbreak, but ultimately it showed the power and resolve of friendship. All of the girls got to shine in their own ways and confront their troubles and I couldn't be prouder. While some may not like how happy the ending is, I honestly am thrilled that it ended how it did. These girls deserve happiness, I will not hear any counterarguments!
So, final thoughts on this series: this was so much better than I could've imagined! It had a fairly simple plot, yet it wove in discussions on sex, sexuality, the dangers of sex talk and how it warp one's views on sex, and gender bias. The characters are endearing while acting like actual teenagers and the development each one gets is satisfying and consistent. The artwork is stunning and the writing was full of emotions, whether they be beautiful or painful. There is a lot of drama, so if you aren't into that then I would say proceed with caution, but honestly I couldn't recommend this series enough. It was fun, it was emotional, it had incredibly important things to say, and it had a phenomenal cast of characters. If you haven't read this yet, do yourself a favor a change that. It'll be well worth your time.
A strong ending to a fast-paced and emotional final two volumes of an enjoyable series. Mari Okada has really captured the anxiety and camaraderie of youth. The girls of the Literature Club have all had strong character development and this final volume wraps up their savage season as they come to terms with their sexuality, their relationships with each other and their prospective boyfriends, and with themselves.
Of all the characters, Sonezaki was one of my favourites as she had such a strong character arc. She overcomes her shame and reluctance towards relationships owing to her strict upbringing and manages to find one of the strongest and healthiest relationships with a partner in the series. Meanwhile, although it was great to see exploration of other non-heterosexual relationships, it still feels unfortunate that Momoko really got no resolution to her arc and is left adrift at the end.
This was a fun and enjoyable series with good characters and a real strong understanding of that truly savage time that is high school.
The scenario of the end of volume 7 paves the way for all our characters to be in the same room to sort everything out. Most things get addressed but I felt many feelings got forgotten about when they weren’t the top issues. I think Hongo’s storyline was my favorite after all. Disappointed Momo’s went pretty much nowhere, but overall I really liked this series. It pushed the boundaries and was a bit more adult or scandalous in the typical high school dating drama genre, which was refreshing and interesting.
Good ending! I like that the girls all made up at the end. This series as a whole was great! It did a good job of showing how confusing sex can be when you’re coming of age. It brought back my own feelings of late middle school/early high school.
The art is beautiful. The story is filled with great characters and the story itself was well written. If you like a story about real life issues with some great humor, well here ya go! I definitely recommend this series!
I finished!! I like how the ending is a little ambiguous, it allows us to choose what couples we want together or not (I'm personally rooting for Nina and Momoko, of course). It's nice to see how everything went back to normal, and I liked seeing the girls stand up for the injustices the school was inflicting on them. I wish there was more in the series, but I'm okay with rereading whenever I wish to.
What a great finale to a wonderful series. The art is brilliant and the credits at the end demonstrate what a herculean effort goes in to producing a top notch series. Mari Okada perfectly encapsulates the challenges, the awkwardness, and yes, even the sweetness of young love and formative friendships of youth.
Personally not thrilled with how Milo continues to somehow scrape by as a protagonist rather than I dunno, quitting teaching, but you know, it’s a manga and all. Aside from wanting to banish the adult men who were quasi involved with high schoolers in this, I’m really happy with how this series was paced and plotted and how it wrapped up. I really loved the series as a whole.
