Exemplar Hall #2

Jesse and the Magi Vault: Zodiac Magic Academy

Rate this book
Book 2 of Exemplar Hall - An action-packed fantasy romance series from International Bestselling author JL Madore and debut author Ruby Night! Being drafted into an elite, all-male academy of magik, monsters, and mercenary men was never the plan—but honestly, we had no choice in the matter. Maybe it was written in the stars or maybe it's merely the design of corrupt men out to trap us and kill our traitor of a father. Either way, the Gemini twins are in the house. Trapped by the wards of the school. Chipped and trackable if we escape. Pretending to be a dude in a sea of testosterone. Ohhh , the testosterone. Maverick, River, Jack, Drake, Kade, Chad ... Whether lovers, friends, or enemies, with my powers unlocked, they call to something wild in me. Maybe this Magi world isn't so bad after all. This is a fast-paced, medium-burn, twenty-somethings romance series set in a world where magical beings harness astrological power to get what they want. The heroine will end up with multiple love interests so you never have to pick a favourite. Expect hot romance, spine-tingling action, sword-crossing, sassy humor, and a continuation of story that takes you through five books.

4.6 stars.
Hell yeah, dude!
This just keeps getting better.
So far I have basically zero complaints.

The only thing that sticks out as a little troublesome and like ‘what the actual fuck?’ Is that Jess came upon a plaque dedicated to her father’s accomplishments and of those was that he ‘fought for the Confederacy…and helped the union rebuild..’
and then her immediate thought was ‘wow, so he’s always been fighting the bad guys’.
Uh….
*record scratch*
Hold up.
Did you just allude to the Union as being the bad guys??
Like…was that little detail and thought process truly necessary? We just HAD to know that her father was racist? But oh, don’t worry, he helped the union rebuild so he was good in the end…bitch..his side lost, he had zero choice in the matter. It was either help rebuild, or die a traitor..like.
What is this nonsense, and why did it even make it into the book??

*sigh*
Truly that was like 2 sentences of the book. And maybe I read too much into it and she actually was just talking about his Wild West days when she said that. 🤷🏻‍♀️
The rest of the book was fantastic.
The fight scenes don’t bore me into skimming past then.
The sex is hot, though not super frequent since she’s hiding as a boy and super fucking busy with literally life or death bullshit.
The magic is super cool.
The creatures and weapons and all of that are also cool as shit.

…it’s just that…now I know her dad, the head hero of this tale, is in fact a racist. And I can’t unsee it.🫢
So.
There’s that.

Anyway.
I love the series.
I can’t put it down.
It’s got me completely hooked. Which is why I catch little shit like that👆

I’m gonna keep reading. But I feel different about her dad now, and there’s no help for it.

Still a rip off of another series.

Still copying Shadowspell Academy. The list of character and plot matches between the two series is just getting longer. Should be on a fanfic site, not making money off the back of other authors' hard work.

A great read

The Storme twins for the win! I love the world building and the snark. The relationships develop naturally. Fast paced and fun.

***OMG! THIS IS ADDICTIVE***

I can't believe I've only just found this series. Book 1 was awesome, but book 2 is brilliant, and I want more....

I liked this continuation of the series, but I was a little frustrated with the way the relationship development is progressing. I guess it just doesn’t feel like a romance to me. The story is interesting, but I wouldn’t necessarily categorize it as a romance even though it does have a couple spicy scenes in it. I also was led to believe from the Amazon description on this one that we were looking at a certain set of H’s in this book (it’s like a RH standard that when you bold names in the book description, those names are key players and typically represent the main love interests), that is not the case at all- some of those characters like Drake and Kade are barely present in the book and definitely don’t give off any type of romantic vibes. Chad was, is, and remains a major enemy character throughout as well. It almost felt a bit like a false advertisement to have them listed in that way in the description because it made it sound like they would be more important than they are to this story 😅. I also can’t tell what size the H is ultimately going to be because in book 1 I was thinking 4, then I was think 5, but now there are several hints throughout this story that indicate it could be much larger (I hope not though). Basically, there are so many male characters and they’re all described as good looking or brooding so it’s hard to suss out where things are headed and with who.

It is a 5 book series so there are still plenty of pages for this to get sorted, but I just wish there was a better idea at this point of who Jessi’s connections are and I wish there was a little more relationship development. I would also like Maverick to get over himself and stop being so hot and cold.

Other than the relationship dynamics I really enjoyed this one. It has a lot of really interesting world building starting to emerge and I’m definitely looking forward to seeing how the plot progresses. We definitely have some mega ahole dbags that need to get what’s coming to them, so I’m looking forward to watching them get their just desserts.

Jesse’s next step

We pick up where book 1 left off, with Jesse going after Wyatt through the Vault, but the Council is there and they know who she is. After she’s accepted by the Vault, the Council lets her into Exemplar as long as she continues to act like a guy. If she thought the trial was tough, it’s okay nothing compared to Exemplar. Not only are she and Wyatt completely new to the magik world, but they have to keep so many secrets as well.
Seeing as Exemplar has to explain why there’s now 2 Storme siblings, instead of just Wyatt, things become even more difficult for Jesse.
Thankfully they’ve found solid support to help them, although it takes a bit to determine who is actually helping and who isn’t.
Her journey through the first semester gives you all the feelings, and they run the spectrum. I’m glad the twins have each other, but I’m super glad Jesse has the support she finds and I’m seriously hoping she’s open to a little more because I think it’d be great! I’m excited for the next book because that ending was amazing and I can’t wait to find out the fallout.

Really enjoying the series. I'm glad it's developing further. The romance part is not a fast burn but not slow either. There are more than one mate though and it's not really been touched on in this book. Kinda subtle and I'm sure the next book will delve in further. I kinda feel bad for Brody and he's kinda got a secret and I just hope Jesse is okay with it. I know why he hasn't told her but he should have the moment he realized it when they took the walk in the forest. Who knows what her reaction is going to be. He's still her teacher so I think they're both kinda nervous what that means when their bond snapped into place with 1 feeding. Usually it takes hundreds of feedings for those to develop. It's going to be interesting. I don't know what to make of Floyd though. I want to trust he's okay but I think he's got his own agenda but I don't think he wants her hurt. I don't know if he's a potential mate though. I don't get that vibe although he's attractive to her. Speaking of they suck at hiding she's a girl. Tons of people know. They aren't exactly hiding it much. Especially when she's crushing on anyone who's she's liking.

Seriously Brilliant! ** NO SPOILERS **

Jesse and her twin brother Wyatt (20y/old) are enrolled at Exemplar Hall. Not by their own choice but because it’s a training academy for Magi and Magi Knights. Traditionally the Magi have always been men, any female descendants simply carry the gene to pass onto their sons.

Until Jesse. Their pre academy training exercise was derailed when a legacy candidate turned on her and infected her with two doses of a deadly virus. It meant that they couldn’t escape as planned because Jesse needed the cure, she would have died if they delayed.

Now she’s stuck having to masquerade as a man in all male magical school. It’s as hostile as the training exercise that came close to killing her.

If you’re a fan of urban fantasy and are interested in all things magic and shifters, then read this series. The writing style is laid back and on point, which makes for easy reading. The good guys are easy to love and the bad guys are easy to spot it’s those pesky unknowns that you need to keep an eye on. Books 3-5 coming to my Kindle right now.

Someone needs to give this poor girl a break! The murder attempts won't stop, and it's not her fault she's the only girl with magik—remember, the k is important LOL.

No, but seriously. Another whirlwind, fast-paced, action-filled book. I'm not 100% sure I understand the magic system yet, but that's ok, I'm just going with the flow, and it's not really hindering my enjoyment.

I'm not sure I buy the romantic connection with River, and I'm really not feeling lovey-dovey vibes with any of the other guys either. Mav is the only one I can kinda see the bond with, but I feel this series is a lot more focused on friendship and lust than love. Jesse is a very sexual person, and she has lots of good friends who are very protective of her. Working benefits into the equation when there's attraction involved makes sense to me, but the depth is missing for the deeper feelings to be believable imo.

In any case, I'm still having a swell time, and at the end of the day, that's what ultimately matters most! Onto the next one!

DNF at 85%… I was getting really into this series, and then with this being the 3rd book, I’m not gonna lie, my interest has waned. Like I really want to know about all the magi-tech shit and what it’s doing, but…. I am kind of sick of the repeating of the same things over and over again. There was a game in the common room. We trained with what’s-his-face. This prodigy is being an asshole. More points deducted.

I don’t know. I guess once in the actual school setting the story took a definite juvenile turn. Like these people are suppose to be minimum age of 20, and they’re acting like teenagers (or at least that’s how I feel about some of the scenarios that have come into play).

Maybe I’ll attempt for the 5th time to pick the series back up. But at this point in time, and after several weeks of trying to get back into it, I’m DNFing.

I love Jesse as a main character, and the world of Exemplar Hall is fascinating. The magik with a K system is explained well and the powers/spells/school feel very adult Hogwarts.

However, this is getting 4 stars because the relationships feel pretty flat. They kind of go from friends to love in the blink of an eye. Like any contact with Jesse just makes dudes feral for her.

Also, there are some pretty obvious editing issues. It seems like some chapters were going to be cut or rewritten but weren’t? At one point a character had a conversation about a big event, then in the next chapter he says “I heard about [big event].” to one of the people in on the previous chapter’s conversation. I haven’t come across anything that affects the plot really, it’s just in need of a read through by an editor.

holy cats

Holy cats this is good. Like stay up all night try to figure out how to read during the day and still work and must finish immediately good. The only problem is it’s not complete series. I hate in complete series because I read too fast. Now I have to decide do I read the third book and then wait the 18 days for the next book to come out and then possibly wait the next six months for the final book to come out. Horrible problems because it’s so damn good. I’ll be reading the book that I have that’s next to the third installment of exemplar hall and then I’ll be really sad because it’ll be 17 days till the book comes out. But I do have to know what happens in the second semester

Pretty good series. But holy crap! You can not make excuses for a neglectful parent! “I shouldn’t have been so hard on him for abandoning us” Hell no! She shouldn’t have gone so easy! Sure he needed to keep distance for safety reasons. Sure sure. But he has an army of spies watching his kids. He couldn’t send a message? Let them know that he wasn’t DEAD. That he loved them. Maybe send a birthday present? How about some freaking child support?! Instead he lets them live in poverty. And Mora was there watching them be physically abused. She could have taken them away somewhere safe instead of turning a blind eye to them getting the crap beat out of them. And then there’s the issue of the mother. John loved his kids soooooo much but apparently he never loved his wife at all. He left and literally broke her. And he has no regrets. She becomes the bad guy when it’s actually his fault she became abusive. I just can’t stand that John is being turned into a saint. He needs to acknowledge that he screwed up and apologize.

Also - male marsupials don’t have pouches.

Honestly loving this series. It's so...palatable, in a great way, if that makes sense. The world building is just un-vague enough, the characters are mostly fleshed out, the plot is moving. I'm having a really rough week at work and these books are keeping me sustained. Just YA-enough to make for easy reading, but with some spice scenes and romance to adult it up.

The only thing I'm perplexed about is who is actually going to end up in the harem. Jesse is attracted to/has tension with basically every single man in the story, so while I suspect a few I'm honestly just not sure!

Also really wish that she had female friends. She has the cook now, which is great, but I honestly feel like the castle cat should have been female, to at least give her that feminine connection.

DNF 71%

Scenes from chapter 21 to 22 make no sense.

After Jesse has the fight with Chad in chapter 21, its followed by a scene where Jesse, Wyatt, River and Brody are together having a conversation about the fight.

Right after that conversation, in chapter 22, in Brody's POV, Brody mentions only having seen Jesse that morning in class and says to her "I heard you had a bit of excitement during hand-to-hand combat with Chad.". No kidding, they literally just had a conversation about this.

This specific scene stands out but there are other parts of the book that just feel like they don't follow the proper order, or were added later and simply don't make sense. This particular scene did it for me and I just don't feel like its worth to keep going.

The amount of times I said “one more chapter” and ended up reading 5 more instead was insane. It was just too good to stop! The steamy and witty scenes have been amped up and boy oh boy are they ever enjoyable! I loved the progression of Jesse's relationships, including the non-romantic ones. If the first book was a 5/5 then this one was a 6/5. This is the kind of series where you could read it no matter what mood you’re in, and odds are, it will have what you’re looking for and fulfill your needs.
Can't wait to read the third one in the series and procrastinate everything else that I need to do!

This book was so addicting, I swear it was laced with cocaine and magik. Every sentence was worth tabbing/annotating OMG! Lots of sexy scenes to get you fired up, and if you're anything like me, you will be running laps around your house because of how steamy certain parts are 🥵

I am all about the romance and spicy scenes in books, but I really enjoyed the training and learning in class scenes. Just the mention of their different classes and the assignments that they have to do excited me and let me fantasize about which classes I would be good/bad at if I were to be a student at exemplar hall.

Another great installment

Picks up right where we left off in Book 1, and the first semester at Exemplar is certainly interesting.

Have to say, I really appreciated the balance of plot in this one. Not too heavy on the bullying, not too heavy on the danger/action, has great moments for the characters to connect and have their personalities shine through, and we get another one or two steamy open-door scenes. A little mild, but still explicit.

My only gripe is that it still seems really unbelievable to me that Jesse hasn’t been found out yet. Also loving the little hint of Harry Potter in the world building, but I’m glad it’s not like a carbon copy of HP.

I enjoyed the first book but I found this one kind of lacking. I read that the authors previously wrote this and published online (like a novella?) but decided to release it in book format, so they rewrote it to be a RH and I have to say it shows. At this time, I can only name 1 love interest but it feels like she has an attraction to like every guy she meets. The first book had a good pace and there was goals for the characters but the ending was a bit unstable. The second book just feels off and disjointed, I have to wonder if the rewrite was the cause of this.

I'm DNF at 52% right now until the future when I might pick it up again

meh

Loved the premise of this. Loved the first book. Liked the characters. Did not like Jesse as the story progressed. She almost died multiple times but did not listen. She needed help from others so many times but did not listen. She acted liked she knew everything but did not listen. So. Annoying. I had to skim to finish. Even the relationships had glimpses of being good but ended up feeling so flat and lackluster I skimmed through the “supposed to be” steamy scenes. Don’t need to read any more.

3.75 stars. I'm not sure what to think about this. I know this is meant to be an RH but it only really seems like she is in love with Mav and he is holding himself back, like a lot! He kind of indicates a reason but doesn't really let on. I am glad that her and River finally are on the same page but it doesn't feel like love between them. This book seemed to drag on and didn't really have a plot until the end. Mainly it was Jesse and how she is going to pass her classes. I guess with there being 5 books in the store there needed to be some fluff.

so good

I just finished binge reading the first 3 books, and I can’t wait until November for book 4. Jesse and her crew are awesome. They are super sweet and caring for all involved. As the books progress she claims more of her me. The story line has kept me entertained and I haven’t felt like the story has lagged at all and maybe instead of 5 books it should have been 3 or 4. I have been entertained the whole time.

Fantastic!

This is the first series I’ve read by these authors. I’m officially a fan and I’m following them now. I read the first two books in 24 hours and and I’m diving directly into the third. I strongly recommend this series!
I’ve read a lot of dark fantasy recently. I’m delighted that this series has a story that’s excellent, characters I like, and provides a wonderful escape from reality without a list of trigger warnings.
I’m seriously impressed.

Bad reviews need not apply!

Great book! Honestly I read some of the meh reviews but was happily surprised that they didn’t apply. Not sure what book they read but this follow up was great. Still a bit slow burn-y but love the mystery and magiK storyline. Both authors are some of my favs so looking forward to the next book!

on the line

I’m not 100% sure I’m I to the series. It has the potential to have such a great story line but for me something is missing. I hate to say it’s dragging bc it’s a really sort timespan and a lot happens but there are a lot of jumps and missed opportunities for conversation.

I keep feeling underwhelmed by this series. The plot is actually interesting and the world is rich but delivery lacks something. The author should work on creating tension. Also I prefer seeing the emotional growth of bonds as compared to "bam here it is". Small things that are missing and therefore the relationships seem as given rather than built.

This book has some good ideas, but just doesn’t pull it off.
Also 80-90% of the relationships happening in this book are just offffff, it’s nqr - i looked ahead and imo the last mmc to be added to the mix is also not it for me, so I’ll be ending the series here
Anyway, had potential but the relationships don’t make sense to me, and the plot is just lacking a bit

warning : multiple sexual partners

The story itself is gorgeous, however disappointed that there was any need to add multiple sexual partners wanting to share each other. Gross.
Won't read any more as I can see it will just escalate with each book but have otherwise enjoyed the story so far.

OMG!

I freakin Loved this book! The twins are super bada$$. There’s so much action in this book! There was never a lull and more talk than action. I have no idea how she managed so much chaos in such a small amount of time. Can’t wait to see where this ending really takes them!
