Rather than howling when the moon appears... American modernist painter M.C. Harris paints it! Here are a selection of his oil paintings concerning this subject produced between 2010 and 2017.
I’ve had this book on my shelf since August of last year & I finally got around to reading it! First, I fell in love with the cover & the title at first glance!
But, because I did, I think I built up a hype for this book. Honestly, I love the aesthetic & I’m a sucker for poetry books that use night sky/moon themes or aesthetics. I don’t know though…I just wasn’t really feeling this one.
It’s not a bad book! Let me say that. It was just—simple.
There were definitely some poems I really liked because of either the flow of the language or the imagery. Like I said, though, I just thought the book was simple. There were a bunch of poems where Dean set up for some really nice imagery or rhymes but I felt the word choice made them fall flatter than they should have. I love rhyming poems (direct or loose rhymes) but when you do use direct rhymes, I feel like it really limits your word choice.
I felt some of the rhymes were a little forced in some of the poems & the punctuations (i.e. commas & periods) interrupted some of the flow they could’ve had.
The section Fury was my favorite! I actually really liked the poems in that section but I think it was also the shortest section. It felt like it anyway.
Overall, this book isn’t bad by any means! I think, if you’re looking to see how rhyming functions in a poem, this would be a good example—take with that what you will. No disrespect to the author but I couldn’t help being reminded of Atticus while reading this. It’s pretty much just a case of ‘I built a hype around this book because of what I thought it would be but ended up a little disappointed’.
Having discovered his work from a friend, I have to say I enjoyed this poetry book more than I can describe. The details are rich with emotion: beautiful and vulnerable. When it is said when someone pours their heart out, I feel as if Dean Ryan has done just that through words on paper. This is a definite must-read in my books!
Some really hit home. Went through it pretty quickly.
If going through pain or heartache, this is beautiful. It was still beautiful anyway, as there were many lines that I loved. We’ve all been there and remember what it’s like.
