He collaborates with famous Kids Book Press that creates picture books for people of all ages to enjoy. Michael’s goal is to create books that are engaging, funny, and inspirational for children of all ages and their parents.
I read this to Harley (whose 3) last night. He’s been struggling with his temper a bit since lockdown (getting frustrated and lashing out regularly). This book has helped us find a technique that is currently working to help prevent him from lashing out (before he hurts people), we just have to remind him to breathe. It was also coincidental that the characters name is Josh and our other brother is also called Josh, which made the book more personal and funny.
‘Breathe in deeply until your tummy looks like a balloon!’
Michael Gordon is the talented author of nearly seventy highly rated children's books including the popular Sleep Tight, Little Monster, and the Animal Bedtime and the award winning Elephants Can Not Sleep, the Dragon series and Daddy’s Little Girl. Michael’s goal is to create books that are engaging, funny, and inspirational for children of all ages and their parents. His Self-Regulation Skills books now number 13 and this is volume 7 – WHEN I LOSE MY TEMPER - and continues his stories that help children learn socialization and traits such as controlling tempers and being angry. The fine illustrations are by Max Larin.
Told in excellent rhyming couplets the primary character of this excellent series is Josh, and the story opens with ‘Josh was getting ready for a trip to the park, Outside the window, the sky became cloudy and dark. Rain pelted down and Mom said, “We’ll have to wait to go out.” This made Josh mad. He huffed and stomped and started to shout.’ Josh confronts anger and is aided by his parents on how to breathe deeply, count slowly, and even ‘dragon breathing’, and gradually Josh learns how to deal with anger issues and is happy!
Not only is this an entertaining book for children (and readers) but it also carries fine information about anger management – in fine little lessons. A very impressive little book that should be part of every child’s library!
When I Lose My Temper is a brilliant book to help children cope with feelings of anger. The story follows Josh as he finds himself showing anger throughout the day until his parents show him some ways to cope.
This is a great book to help children understand how they can regulate their emotions and help them cope with difficult situations with coping methods shown clearly and an easy to understand way. It's good that we got to see Josh experiencing using these techniques as it shows willingness from him and helps them see how effective the methods can be.
The illustrations are brilliant showing children clearly how Josh's emotions changed before and after he learnt ways to cope. This is a great book to help children understand ways to cope with anger.
When I lose My Temper by Michael Gordon Starts With a nameplate and story starts with Josh and he's ready to go to the park to play. Problem is it's raining so his mom sees how angry and upset he gets and comes up with a great idea. This even works on older kids and adults. One page is extremely hard to see with black lettering and very dark background. Love how it shows his dad that the method worked. What's even better is he does get the park eventually and he gets to use the method again til he is friends with the girls. Coloring pages are included at the end. About the author is attached. Other works by the author are highlighted at the end.
Josh is like so many kids. When he gets upset he starts feeling bad and then loses his temper. His mom sees this and teaches him some breathing techniques. That evening he gets upset again and tries what his mom taught him and it didn't seem to help very much. Dad teaches him something else to add to it. When he wants to play with his sister and her friend they won't let him. He can feel himself getting upset again. He tries the techniques several times to get himself under control. He has learned how to help himself.
Please forgive me if I’ve eve done or rien anything to wrong you. My intentions our always good and if external forces frames me than justice needs to take over and clean our live up. Please forgive me one day if anything had ever wronged you. I love you my brother! Love like paternal platonic!
It's really good book to teach kids about managing anger!!! Simple words and really good to say things to kids . Anger management is must to teach kids. Thanks for the wonderful work!
"When I Lose My Temper" teaches children all about regulating their emotions when they feel angry or disappointed. This is a good book to show children that there are many ways to deal with our emotions.
I liked reading this to my little ones. Hearing about anger in a well illustrated book had them listening and paying attention. Something Grandma liked getting across to them that they can do just like Josh!
I am a big fan of Michael Gordon’s books for children. My grandson has enjoyed learning about emotions and the different responses and ways to cope. This book is a good book about anger which is a really tough emotion for most kids and adults too!
Josh is disappointed he can’t go to the park it’s raining outside. He huffs and stomps his foot and starts to shout!!
I love how his mother teaches him to cope with his anger. She has him lay down and breathe holding his breath and count to four and breathe out all the bad!!
Josh gets angry again when it’s time to turn off the TV and get ready for bed. He squeezes his fists tight and feels like screaming and kicking! Josh’s father steps in to help Josh breathe and let out their breath with a loud dragon roar!!!
Oh no, Josh gets angry again when his sister has friends over to play. His sister says he’s too little to play. Josh has a pain in his head and his breath become short. He breathes faster and his face becomes red. He remembers “to breathe in slowly and hold it to four and exhale with a fierce dragon roar”!
The artistry in this book is very colorful and engaging. This book is a great learning tool for any reader or adult to share with a young listener about angry feelings and what to do!
Michael Gordon tackles the hardest emotions from children and parents and caregivers a different look at a solution. This book in on the hard subject of temper tantrum to the 9'S. The all out, down on the floor, kicking and screaming, fit. It shows how the child doesn't want to be on the floor but doesn't know what else to do. Mr. Gordon shows them something new to do. Josh couldn't go to the park because it was raining. He wanted to huff and stomp and shout. Mom said she would reach him what to do. He should breathe in deep until his tummy looks like a balloon. Hold it and count to four. Then breathe out all the bad feelings. Then do it again, breathe in deep until his tummy is a balloon. Count to four and breathe out bad thoughts. Does it work? Should he try it again? You get to read/listen and find out. That is a fun thing to do.
I gave "When I Lose My Temper" 5 stars. I read this book to my 5 yr old grandson. It held his attention. He practiced the breathing techniques himself as I read. He loved the book.
I loved this book because while it was entertaining, it was also thought provoking (for my grandson). I want to read books to him that teach him. I highly recommend this book for young children.
A delightful story which is especially important during this time of Covid where children are not able to get rid of excess energy in school activities and sports, and may sometimes feel closed in and frustrated that things are not working well for them.
The illustrations are delightful and I have seen these very methods working well with some of our grandchildren. A great 'talk about' story for children from 2-9, depending on their maturity levels.
I'm the mom of a grown, developmentally delayed man who really doesn't have a temper but used a deep breathing exercise when stressed and worked up. This book will really help him, it's absolutely adorkable and appropriate for everybody, even grown up children like myself!
