Whatever one’s socioeconomic class or vocation, happiness seems to be the elusive factor. Despite all the money, and in many cases because of the lack of it, people do not seem happy. How can we achieve the holy grail of human existence? And can we be happy amidst all the unpleasant happenings in the world?

‘Build a Happier Brain’ by Som Bathla is one in a series of books exploring the workings of the mind. It is said that nonfiction books should be written only by subject matter experts. The author is a voracious assimilator of knowledge obtained by either reading books or summaries, listening to podcasts, watching educational videos, and more. Apart from that, he has his insight. He may not have professional training in the subject, but his deep understanding of the human mind gives this text its distinct flavour. It starts by talking about the primary reasons why people are unhappy. Then it talks about the different psychological theories of motivation. It proceeds to discuss the neuroscience of the mind and how the brain engenders happiness through various hormonal secretions. And finally, it gives suggestions that, if followed, may lead to happiness in different aspects of our lives- personal, professional, and social.

The book goes wide indeed. It references the works of so many researchers on the subject. Despite reading many self-help, business, and psychology books, I still found stuff I wasn’t exactly aware of. But the author is not a psychologist or neuroscientist, so this work isn’t exactly novel. And he cannot be exhaustive about the causes of happiness and unhappiness in people. There will be another similar book somewhere in the countless books sold on Amazon. Hence such books have to be marketed inorganically- in the author’s direct or indirect network or through ad campaigns.

The book is positioned as a text to be read by the everyday working professional or student. It is not supposed to be a classic serendipitous text that gives deep insight into a discipline through new theoretical insights. For that, you should read the books and articles referenced in this book. Because the book is full of internet links that lead to articles and interactive exercises, this text should be read in the e-book format, either a pdf file or the Kindle edition.

Also, this is not a standalone book. Knowledge is best delivered in small doses. This book focuses on one aspect of the human mind. If one book can have parts that make the reader go ‘aha’, imagine reading the whole series!

I know a fair bit about neuroscience as it’s an area of interest for me, but I wanted a refresher so I snapped this up and I have read some of the author’s other books and I liked his style. I’m glad I did as ‘Build a Happier Brain’ is well researched, well written and the author makes a subject that can be quite boring very engaging, informative and enjoyable. The structure of the book is good too, with each chapter showing clearly what the author covers, and I loved the ‘Key Takeaways’ at the end of each chapter. As a therapist and author myself, I wholeheartedly agreed with everything he wrote in Chapter 2, ‘Most Common Reasons Why People Are Not Happy Today’ because when you think about it, they are absolutely true, ye so many of the reasons are fixable! I also liked the inclusion of a link to check your own general ‘Happiness Scale’, which is something I imagine a lot of people would enjoy doing. Chapter 5, Neuroscience: Hacking into Happiness D.O.S.E. Daily provided the ‘refresher’ that I had been hoping for. All in all an excellent book that I definitely recommend if you want to understand how to be happier. And who doesn’t?

A good read for a happier life.

Having worked as a therapist , having read many books related to happiness, and having lived bearing right decades, I benefited contracting this book. It presents good material which has been condensed from other good sources that can benefit most of us. It can also be ideologically to review our habits and attitude and help get us back on track. This book like life can be as good as you make it. Make it a good one!

Great tips

I was intrigued to read this book to understand what makes people happy. The book breaks down the psychology of happiness and provides achievable and practical steps to implement on a daily basis. These key takeaways are summarised after each chapter to help reinforce these elements. To help me to remember the key takeaways that l want to implement, l have set up reminders in my phone as a prompt. Keeping in mind that happiness is an intentional daily practice.
