Joey Spiotto is the author and illustrator of Grumpy Unicorn as well as Alien Next Door and Firefly: Back from the Black. Joey is a regularly featured artist at Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles where he’s had several solo exhibitions. He’s worked as a concept artist in the film and video game industry on such titles as The Polar Express for Warner Bros. and Dead Space and The Sims for Electronic Arts. He lives in Southern California with his wife and two sons.
Grumpy Unicorn consists of a frowning unicorn doing various things with virtually the same expression on his face in the entire book. It is an extremely simple concept and remarkably funny. There are one-hundred and eleven pages with four parts listed in an illustrated table of contents. Each page is illustrated with a maximum of 7 words per page but most are wordless. There are almost no other characters. I offer this much detail to give credence to my assertion that this is a perfect book for kids to transition from picture books to early readers. That is, I believe adults should read this book with kids; but, children will really, really want to learn to read it themselves. There are words like topiary, unicycle, and Piñata but most sentences are two words with a maximum of seven.
Reading a book of this length will give little readers immense confidence.

cute book! My 6 year old picked this out at the book fair and I like the idea of a longer book but with the short word count on the pages and pictures on each page.
Laugh-out-loud humor and circumstances surround the grumpiest unicorn out there! Single picture vignette situations share why Grumpy Unicorn is such a curmudgeon.
I've never laughed out loud at a graphic novel so much before. There are also 3 sequels.
More of a laugh for adults as some of the subtle humor may go over kids' heads, but overall a fun fast read.
From Parties to Holidays and everyday life situations, Unicorn is not all rainbows and glitter. In fact, Unicorn hates it. Find out all of the things that make Grumpy Unicorn's life so miserable.
If you ever needed a pick-me-up laugh, this is the one for you!
If you think unicorns are all cheery, rainbow-loving, you are wrong. Grumpy Unicorn is exactly that. He does not do all the things unicorns are known to do and like. In fact, what he likes pales in comparison more to what he dislikes as this book goes into more. No matter where he goes, he is always grumpy and frowning at his activity, even when no bad luck happens to him. Rarely do you see him enjoying what he does on a normal day.
This whole graphic novel has very minimal text, and in fact, goes more of showing than telling us what Grumpy Unicorn does. It is humorous with its snark, more so when you just see the guy just continuously frown at you as you read! There are sequels to this one, and while I find this enjoyable, perhaps a more solid story would be much preferred for me.
This book is hilarious! My favorite part is about how to throw a party. Highly recommended to kids who like graphic novels, very quick reads, unicorns, and laughing.
Silly comics --mostly single-panel -- about a unicorn who doesn't like anything: holidays, bowling, reading, trips. (NOT a story where there's a lesson that it's okay to be grumpy sometimes but not always.)
I swear on everything I know this is so me lmao I loved this and I really hope there are more coming and this is a series. I laughed for a full hour with a co-worker about this book. Even she agreed this is my Patronus 😂😂😂
Maybe I'm just not the target audience? My daughter found this at the library and is obsessed with unicorns. It was too tricky for my 4-year-old to read and too boring for my 7-year-old to read. It's just a list of things this unicorn doesn't like. No arc, no redeeming moment where Grumpy finds comfort or joy or peace. I was hoping all the horned animals would show up at Grumpy's party but even that glimmer of a story turned out to be nothing. I feel like 1 star would be cruel (maybe that's what Grumpy would do?) But maybe I just don't get the humor. My unicorn obsessed daughter was not amused.

A humorous book filled with sass and sarcasm. The illustrations are very fun. Colorful, silly, and full of grumpiness.
This book introduces readers to Grumpy Unicorn. It consists of short comics with a variety of themes such as holidays, daily activities, and travel. Great for fans of non-traditional unicorns.
A quick, fun read that works as a nice early graphic novel.
Imagine a cross between Grumpy Cat and It's Happy Bunny, using the of-the-moment trendy animal, the unicorn. No story here, but a series of pictures illustrating Unicorn dealing with life's annoyances.
3.5 Not as good as the Road Trip one but still funny. This one is shorter and does not have a plot. Basically an introduction to the character. I do not know if I would have read the next one if I had read this one first.
Not really for kids, so it's super weird that this is a Scholastic title. All the best jokes are about being an adult! I would have thought this was stupid when I was a kid. But I'm an adult, so I thought it was really funny.
