“We’ve been hot and heavy, but this kiss is filled with a carnal need that is consuming every ounce of my being.” Marlee Mackey thinks I didn’t want her but I could never forget the taste of her on my lips. She was the girl next door.
A wild spirit with a heart of gold and a body made for sin. And sin we did. I was consumed by her.
For one night she was mine, then I had to let her go. Now she’s back, and I’ll do anything to make her mine again. Waylon Thayer wasn’t just my older brother’s best friend – he was my everything. Until he wasn’t.
I knew the rules but he still broke my heart without a backward glance. That was three years ago. Being back home stirs up all those unrequited feelings I tried to put behind me.
Waylon may still have a smile that makes my knees weak but I’m different now. I’m putting me first. That was my plan but one kiss, one night in his arms ignites a fire inside me I can’t deny. I can’t say no to Waylon Thayer but I’ll have to if he wont ask me to stay.

Back in the Country is a full length novel and the first book in the Clementine Creek Series. It's a steamy contemporary romance with lots of heart and a happily ever after.

This book was nicely written and it nailed the atmosphere of small, Southern, rural American towns, at least those that are so sweet and welcoming in fiction. However, I do think that the blurb is a bit misleading. I would not qualify the story completely as a romance one, because much of the story telling time was spent on exploring the people around the main characters in the small Tennessee feel-good town (clearly gearing for lots of other books in this series).

It read more like slice of life than romance. There was so little angst between the two leads for 90% of the book that I was quasi yawning. What little angst happening in the last 10% felt fabricated and boring. Esp. since all the mini drama mainly happened because the h, Marlee had a too laid back and slow attitude in having real communications and taking firm decisions (and making them known). I was a bit aghast when she went on her high horse like she had no hand at all in the miscommunications 🙄😅. Of course, it was resolved quickly and sappily.

I liked the author's pen and the atmosphere she drew up. But this was not enough a romance for me and does not qualify as a re-read.

I enjoyed reading Back in the Country, Alexandra Hale's debut. As the title indicates, it's the story of Marlee, who returns to her small Tennessee hometown after college and a few years of work in Nashville to take care of her older brother, who has been injured during a military deployment. She's determined to reconnect with her childhood crush, Waylon, who also happens to be her brother's friend. Although it combines two tropes I don't often read--brother's best friend and small town--the romance is swoony, and the hero's family is full of characters I can't wait to read more about in future books. The book is well written, and the family and the town feel real enough to take a road trip to visit and find some tasty barbecue and sweet tea. I definitely recommend this novel to fans of the brother's best friend trope, sassy heroines, and small-town romance.

Alexandra Hale sets a beautiful base for a coming home story and series in her debut novel Back in the Country. Hale has a wonderful eye for detail, creating characters and settings that put me right in the middle of it all. Country has a sweet nostalgic feeling, full of genuine banter and heartfelt emotions, but don’t let that fool you; this story has serious heat, too. Elements of second chance, age gap, and brother’s best friend move the story forward, while main characters Marlee and Waylon work to overcome their inner struggles and conflicts while sorting out their emotions around their relationship. Low on angst until almost the end of the novel, the confrontation between them is emotional and pivotal. Enmeshed with their relationship conflict is the subplot of Marlee’s brother and Waylon’s best friend, Sorren, returning home, introducing yet another conflict point between them. The resolution there is both heartwarming and heart wrenching. There’s definitely more to Sorren’s story, and I am definitely looking forward to it. Hale plants tiny seeds and glimmers into each character’s part of the web of Marlee and Waylon’s lives, and I sincerely hope their stories are as engaging as the characters are likeable.

One of my most favorite things in the book world is finding new authors. I heard about Ms. Hale and Back in the Country from a Facebook friend in a book group. And the story sounded like it was right up my alley. And omg it was and then some! Marlee and Wade are really just meant to be. That’s that and no one can argue. I can’t wait to read allllll the future words of Ms. Hale!!

"You're it for me, Babygirl. You're home, and wherever you are, that's where I want to be."

Oh my goodness! Back in the Country was such a sweet story!! This reminded me of a Hallmark movie that consumes your little heart, and you can't stop watching; well, you cannot stop reading! I cannot believe this was her debut novel.

Waylon and Marlee stole my heart!! This book will make your little heart smile, and it has the perfect amount of spice that will warm your soul! This book had everything I wanted, from a small-town romance and more.
I am not going to lie; I got a little teary-eyed during some parts of this book, and that ending was PERFECTION!
Way and Marlee were made for each other!

"I could let you make me come all day."

I loved the bonus epilogue, and I can't wait to read more from Mrs. Alexandra Hale!

Back in the Country was a debut novel from Alexandra Hale and I'm so glad I found this author. Best friend's sister is one of my favorite tropes and Ms. Hale does this trope to perfection. Sorren and Waylon grew up as best friends, so close they are practically brothers. But Waylon always had a thing for Marlee, Sorren's little sister. She left the small town for college but is now back and Waylon is done ignoring his feelings for her. These two are both sweet and spicy and I loved seeing them ward through their issues and end up together. I also loved Waylon's family and cant wait to read all their stories too! I'm really hoping Hank is next! If you love best friends sister, found family, small town, this is definitely a must-read!

OMG... I absolutely LOVED this book and Marlee and Waylon's story. From the first 25 pages, I was pulled into and fully invested in their story.

Marlee and her brother Sorren move in with her grandparents when she is seven and he 14. Waylon Thayer is the next door neighbor and quickly becomes Sorren's best friend, but more like his brother. The Thayers all welcome Marlee and Sorren into their family from the beginning showing them love like they never knew before.

From the beginning, Waylon and Marlee had a special bond. Because of a promise Waylon made Sorren at Marlee's high school graduation, he is forced to watch Marlee walk out of his life to fullfil her education and have a chance to make something for herself out of their small town.

After obtaining her degree and working and living in Nashville for a few years, Marlee is ready to head home and claim her man. Unfortunately, Sorren is injured during the war, but that gave Marlee the perfect reason to come home.

Marlee is such a strong, fierce young woman who knows what she wants. Waylon is head over heels and willing to do whatever it takes so she doesn't walk away a second time.

The secondary characters are wonderful and provide such a great support to their story. I can't wait to see who will get their HEA next!

A fun, sweet, sexy smalltown brother's best friend, second chance romance.

Marlee has had a crush on Waylon since basically forever. Feelings he always reciprocated, but a few things were standing between them. Their age difference, Marlee's older brother and Waylon's best friend Sorren, and the fact that Marlee was supposed to go away for college. Still, they had one night together. One night, then Marlee had to go back to college and Waylon had to watch her leave.

Three years later, Marlee has made a career for herself in Nashville, but she doesn't hesitate to come home to Clementine Creek to help her brother adjust to life after he's been injured overseas. And this time, Waylon is determined to never watch her leave again...

This story was a true page turner for me, and if I'd had the time, I wouldn't have put it down only once. It was a light read, perfect for the summer, perfect for a vacation, perfect as a breath of fresh air to get away from life for a bit. And still, the ending had me tearing up a little because it was just so sweet!
The characters are so lovable and the entire smalltown charm couldn't have been portrayed better. I'll come back for the other books in this series for sure. Alexandra Hale to sneak each and every one of these great characters into my heart, and I couldn't even tell whose story I'd want to read first. Sorren's? Hank's? Rhea's? Otto's? I couldn't choose if I wanted to, so I just hope I'll get all their stories soon. ❤️

This little book was good, steamy, with a good plot and characters.

I liked the story of Marlee and Waylon, being his brother's best friend but loving her since they met but unable to do it because it is "forbidden", she goes to study in the city but returns after a while and is determined to have Waylon since she is in love. The story of these two was cute, in the sense that although it has its drama and its doubts, they fight for each other, in addition to the fact that Waylon's family is a beautiful thing.

It was a good start and a good introduction to this whole series and this small town 🫶🏻

Thanks to Alexandra Hale & The Author Agency for the ebook copy in exchange for my honest review 📚!!

_______________

"She's this wild spirit that's always been bigger than this town. She's a force to be reckoned with and by God, this girl will move mountains one day."

Waylon and Marlee have one of those stories of lifetime love. Their connection starts at a young age and is with them all through their lives. There is a slight age gap between them so Waylon knows Marlee needs to venture out on her own and live her life. He is her brother's best friend and has only ever wanted the best for her. Finding out she is coming back home he is determined to not let her walk out of his life a second time.

From the moment Marlee sees Waylon upon returning home the magnificent chemistry between these two makes its appearance and never goes away. The looks, the touches, the kisses....I swear it is just as hot, if not hotter, than when they actually get down to it. These two are on complete fire for each other. For me, Waylon and Marlee definitely scream soulmates!!!

Debut novels are my favorites to read and Alexandra Hale's Back in the Country is so brilliantly written. You get small town, brother's best friend, and second chance all wrapped up in this little beauty. She gives the reader these secondary characters that you find yourself wanting to know more about them and hoping they will have their own stories in the series (cough, cough Hank and Sorren)! I can say I am in for the long run when it comes to Ms. Hale and whatever she is writing....I will be reading it!

4.5 stars Back in the Country By Alexandra Hale
Back in the Country from debut author Alexandra Hale is a steamy, series starter, second chance/ brother’s best friend/ age-gap, HEA romance.
Hale crafts a solid foundation for the series as she introduces readers to small-town Clementine Creek and its citizens through the eyes of Back in the Country’s main characters, Marlee and Waylon. While this is Way and Marlee’s love story, many side characters have intriguing stories to explore as the series continues. I look forward to learning more about Waylon’s brother Hank and Marlee’s brother Sorren.
Back in the Country hits all the prerequisites for a small-town romance, an engaging couple, quirky supporting characters, a bit of conflict and angst, plenty of steam, and a swoony Happily Ever After. All in all, a solid debut that makes Alexandra Hale an author to watch.

Are you looking for a down-home swoon-worthy romance? Do you like brother's best friend romance? Then this is it.

I fell in love with the way Waylon was towards his family, friends, and especially Marlee. That man captured my heart. He knew he made a mistake letting Marlee go off to college and start a relationship with someone who wasn't him. Once Marlee came back home he knew it was time to make his fantasy a reality and prove they were meant to be together. As for Marlee, that girl was something fierce. She had her dream job and busted her butt to achieve her goals. She has a heart of gold and cares for others. This girl was simply amazing. Waylon and Marlee deserved a happy. Was there a path to ever after easy? No. Were there lies? Depends on how you look at it. Did their love bleed through the pages? Yes especially from the beginning. This is one couple I cheered for since the first page.

The side characters were great and I truly can't wait to read their books. I really seriously really want Marlee's brother Sorren to get his own book. Hint hint.

Back in the Country by Alexandra Hale was a sweet, small town swoony romance that I absolutely adored. I fell in love with whole vibe that Clementine Creek gives off, where everyone is family and willing to pitch in. Waylon and Marlee have a love story that runs deep, and I loved coming along for the ride as these two let go of past inhibitions and fully gave into their true desires to be together. Marlee’s grit, spirit, and determination to make something of herself and stay true to her roots was empowering. It just made me adore her even more. Waylon was charismatic, passionate, but vulnerable and real! Plus, the chemistry between Waylon and Marlee was hot from the start and getting to feel the push and pull of their steamy attraction did crazy good things to my heart!

Overall, I enjoyed Alexandra’s debut novel! If you are a fan of small town romances with a fierce successful heroine, a hunky country man who knows his worth, meddling brothers, a little drama with an ex, steamy spicy first times, falling in love over time, a caring family, farm life, chickens, decorative signs, and a HEA that will melt your heart and leave you with all the delicious happy sighs, then you will love this book! I am looking forward more from Alexandra Hale!

Have you ever met someone whether romantic or not and it was like finding the other part of your whole. That's how Waylon and Marlee are, even if you take the romance out, these two have such a deep tethered soul connection they were always meant to be two parts of a whole.

This small town romance packed so much love in so many different ways. Not only do we have the main arc of the story but we see all these other different types of love. The town of Clementine Creek is here for the long haul and mark my words, I see us getting to know multiple members of this town.

Hank...where you at bae?!?!?! I'm moving to Clementine Creek and snatching you up!!!

Such a great debut novel and a brand new one click author for all my small town romance wants and needs!

I loved this book so much! Waylon and Marlee were such a cute couple who deserved their happily ever after. There chemistry was off the charts. I loved all the supporting characters. Marlee and her brother Sorren have had a rough start when they were younger. Everything her brother did for her was endearing. I can’t say enough about this author and this book. I can’t wait for other books by her and I am especially hoping for Hank and Sorren getting their happy ever afters too!

I came across this book on Instagram, and was lucky enough to be an ARC reader for it. This book is sweet and sassy, with just a hint of spice. The characters are loveable, and I found myself hanging onto their every word. It is well written, with an easy to follow storyline, and I was pleasantly surprised. It is a generally quick read, with a happily ever after, and I felt like most of the loose ends were tied up by the time I was finished. But now I really need to know the brother's story!

This book is the author's debut novel and an advanced reader copy was provided for an honest review.

This book is a small town, second chance, best friend's sister/brother's best friend novel that was a whole lot of sweet with a dash of spice.

It will leave you contented with the outcome and eagerly anticipating the stories to come for the remaining characters.

The novel highlights the challenges and growth faced by the hero and heroine as they find their way back to each other. Their undeniable bond and love for each other is emphasized right from the start and you will get to experience a taste of that. You'll feel the emotions of these characters and rejoice in their victories.

I found this book to be lighthearted and satisfying, a great debut for both the author and this series and I am excited to see what the Alexandra Hale releases next!

Back in the Country is a brilliant debut novel from Alexandra Hale. She has created a family and small town full of character and heart that you want to visit again and again. You want to be invited home for chicken potpie or meet a friend for a meal at Smokin’ Joes or enjoy the music at Brew, Q ‘n Boogie.
This book is full of giggles and snort-laugh moments, melt your heart and teary moments and several please-pass-me-the-fan moments. Marlee and Waylon have a realism to them that I loved, from their appearance to their strengths, flaws and insecurities. I loved Waylon’s protectiveness and loyalty, and hurt for his doubts about his worthiness. I loved it when Marlee found her voice and made sure the men in her life heard her. I look forward to returning to Clementine Creek.

"You're my forever, baby. You've always been my forever."

Summary: Caught in a promise to his best friend, Waylon Thayer had to push his best friend's sister away to live a big life. Trying his best to pick up the broken pieces of his heart, Waylon tries to forget about his love for Marlee while she's living in the big city with her boyfriend. But when his friend is hurt in action and Marlee decides to move back home, Waylon decides to hold nothing back and pursue creating a life with her and confessing his true feelings. Will Marlee let him in despite their heartbreaking past?

"Baby Girl, all of my happiest memories are because I shared them with you."

Dani's Thoughts: Since I have been reading Alexandra Hale's books for a year now, it is so hard for me to believe that this was her debut novel!!! I read Alexandra's books for the banter, the tension, the spice, and for the beautiful journeys her characters wade through. This, being her debut novel, blew me away because it was just that good.

This was a beautiful story between Waylon and Marlee. I always love brother's best friend, so I couldn't wait for Marlee's brother, Sorren, to find out about their growing relationship. The anticipation with each chapter was making this a tough one to put down.

Waylon was a book boyfriend dream with all of his swoony ways, even when he let his fear make decisions for the two of them. The ending and the way he won Marlee back solidified my love for him, especially since he included the most important people in their lives for his plan. Marlee knew what she wanted and wasn't going to let anyone, especially her brother, get in her way anymore. I loved watching the two of them sort through their past and pave a way to a beautiful future together.

I cannot wait to continue this series!

Marlee Mackay had a special connection with her older brother Sorren's best friend, Waylon Thayer, from the moment they met, but their seven year age difference meant that she was always too young for it to turn into anything romantic. That didn't stop her from wishing things were different, however, so when she finally gets a chance to be with him at age 21, nothing will stand in her way. Unfortunately, Waylon pushed Marlee away afterwards because he was afraid of losing his best friend, and besides, he believed that she deserved more than what he and their small town of Clementine Creek had to offer. Heartbroken, Marlee returned to Nashville to finish college and then find a job, but three years later, everything has changed. Tired of doing what everyone else thinks is best for her instead of what makes her happy, Marlee is taking control and coming home to claim the life that she wants, including Waylon.

I really enjoyed this sweet yet steamy story, which featured likeable, three-dimensional characters and a heartfelt second chance romance. Marlee and Waylon had so much history and obviously loved each other very much, but they faced quite a few challenges in pursuing a relationship. I really liked how Marlee's brother Sorren's story and his reaction to their relationship was interwoven with the romance since it was one of the key points of conflict between Marlee and Waylon. I hope Sorren will get a story of his own in the future; after everything he's been through, he deserves a happy ending too!

The book's other secondary characters added a tremendous amount of depth and humor to the story. I particularly enjoyed Waylon's younger twin brothers Otto and Case, who were really funny together. I also liked his oldest brother Hank, who was kind of grumpy but certainly had a good reason for it. I can't wait to find out more about his backstory!

Overall, "Back in the Country" is a strong debut for Alexandra Hale and I recommend it for all contemporary/small town romance fans. I will be watching to see what Hale writes next.

This book is like being hugged by the person you love most while you're warpped in a warm blanket and sipping on hot chocolate out of your favorite mug. Oh and with a hearty dose of spice 🌶.

Review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Back in the Country, by Alexandra Hale @authoralexandrahale , is everything.

Marlee hopes to lose her virginity to Waylon after graduation, but Waylon makes a deal with her to wait until she goes to college and finds out who she is and what she wants first. He will be waiting when she's back if she is still interested. When Marlee does come back Waylon holds true what he said years ago, but just for one night. Years later the two still have a thing for eachother, but their love needs to be okay with Marlee's brother/Waylon's best friend which may be a problem.

I love these characters.

I love the forbidden adjacent romance - mutual family/friend love and respect

I love the family aspect and dynamic between siblings-Marlee and her brother (now home from deployment), as well as the sense of family among friends.

I love the dual POVs because it allowed for what would have been miscommunication to be more of a sweet secret that let you be happy and cheer for the what's coming instead of being frustrated with, yelling at, and shaking the characters.

I love the musical playlist seemlessly running through out the story with odes to the 90s.

I love the smalltown and all of its vibes that didn't make the characters feel trapped.

I love the sex and spice that never became smut.

I love the lack of possessive ownership within Marlee and Waylon's relationship and that "mine" was a mutual respect for one another as equals. It was the first time the nickname "baby girl" didn't make me want to vomit.

I love when Marlee calls Waylon "Way".

I love this book.

I have the upmost respect and thankfulness for Alexandra Hale. BRAVO my friend BRAVO! ❤️

What I’m Starry-Eyed Over:
🤩 1st person dual POV & their voices are just so cute with all the southern charm.
🤩 Tropes: 2nd chance, small town, brother’s best friend, found family.
🤩 Songs thrown out throughout—so fun! This book feels like a hot summer country song. See my story (or song highlights) for a couple of my song choices.
🤩 The flashback chapter is so hot. It’s gives us a taste of the physical connection between Marlee and Waylon. Since we have to put up with the slow burn. ;)
🤩 Creative Arts careers (woodworking and digital design) play such a fun part in the storyline.
🤩 The name of Waylon’s business is lovely: JT & Co Woodworking. My grandaddy was also JT and I absolutely adored him.
🤩 You’ll feel all the feels; but, the extra emotions of love and longing between Marlee and her brother Sorren are so sweet and strong.
🤩 Two highlights I made when falling in love with Waylon:
“’Baby Girl,’ he says while lowering my hand, ‘If I kiss you now, I’m not gonna stop, and I have plans for you tonight.’ Well then. . .”
“I mentally add massage her entire body to my list of ways I’d be showin’ my appreciation for her.”
🤩 I loved Marlee the whole time but I really liked her excitement over the old barn tear-down that had her thinking: “but I lived for this. The pop-up adventure with the people I love most is nothing short of perfect.”
🤩 Who gets the next Clementine Creek story? Hank and the new girl in town?

What I’m Wishing/Dizzy About:
💫 I recommend a little counseling/therapy especially for Sorren but Marlee too. Parent abandonment and PTSD/war injuries are big time issues that even loving small town families probably can’t handle on their own.
💫 I would have liked to read more of Waylon and Marlee’s lusty thoughts and desires about each other to help build-up to the amazing physical connection.

This debut novel by Alexandra Hale was such a sweet, beautiful, coming-of-age, brother’s best friend romance!

Marlee and Waylon have been childhood friends since they were seven and fourteen years old, respectively, but as they grew up they felt their bond grow stronger. By the time Marlee graduated high school she knew she wanted Waylon as more than a friend, but he won’t risk being the reason she plants her roots in Clementine Creek and misses her chance to chase bigger dreams.

When she returns home after college, Marlee is all too ready to prove to Waylon that her dreams are simple, and they begin and end with him.

Will they be able to build the life together that they both desperately want?

I loved Marlee’s independent spirit and her self-confidence to go after the man of her dreams and her career while maintaining her country roots. Waylon was such a sweet, gentle man who only wanted the best for Marlee but didn’t believe he was good enough for her.

I enjoyed my visit to Clementine Creek and look forward to reading more about the many side characters in the town and in Waylon’s family as well as Marlee’s brother, Sorren.

Congratulations on your debut novel, Alexandra!
