Rookie FBI Special Agent Win Tyler should be resting on his laurels after emerging from the False Prophet case a hero. Instead, he finds himself surrounded by mystery and danger after a woman’s severed hand emerges from a toxic thermal pool at a local geyser. Win soon discovers that there are other women missing from the park. Are these disappearances murders or simply unfortunate accidents?
Evidence suggests the skeletal remains belong to a missing Russian scientist, and Win’s quest to find answers takes him to Kamchatka, Russia, where he’s forced to take on an espionage role he’s not trained to perform. Who can he trust as he navigates an increasingly murky area between good and evil? Are more lives still at risk? Will the search for the lost strengthen his faith as he strives to bring closure and peace not only to the families of the missing but also to his own soul?
A Sacred Duty, award-winning author Rhona Weaver’s second installment in the FBI Yellowstone Adventure series, follows Win into a maelstrom of deceit and violence involving a Russian intelligence officer, a mole within the Bureau, and a serial killer. Set against the stunning landscape of Yellowstone National Park and the wilds of Far Eastern Russia, this exciting novel is both a fast-paced thriller and a heartfelt story of loss, trust, and grace.
Rhona Weaver is a retired swamp and farmland appraiser who had a thirty-five-year career in agricultural real estate and founded a program for at-risk children in Arkansas. She is a graduate of the University of Arkansas, a Sunday School teacher, and an avid gardener. Growing up on a cattle farm in the Ozarks gave her a deep appreciation of the outdoors and wildlife. Her ideal vacation spot is a state or national park. Her novel draws on her love of the land and her deep admiration for the men and women in our law enforcement community who truly share a noble calling. Those park rangers, FBI agents, and other first responders are her heroes. Rhona’s husband, Bill Temple, is a retired Special Agent in Charge and Deputy Assistant Director of the FBI; he helped immeasurably with researching the book. Rhona and Bill live in Arkansas on a ridge with a view with three contented rescue cats. A Noble Calling is Rhona’s debut novel and the first in the FBI Yellowstone Adventure series.
While I generally enjoyed read ing this book, I had the same problem with the main character's insecurities. I also think that, for a trained professional in law enforcement, he kept walking into situations by being ignorant of his surroundings. Since his experiences in book one, one would think he'd be more cautious. The long, detailed description of the Russian agent felt completely unnecessary. I skipped it, because it distracted from the storyline rather than enhanced it.
Well, I don't think I liked this book quite as well as I liked the first one -- but it's close! Rhona Weaver has written her second book, and the second in the FBI Yellowstone Adventure series. It was good to read about Win, Trey, and Luke. It was good to read about an Arkansas Razorback, that is a good man, and struggles if he is good enough. The story was enjoyable, and I finished it in 4 day (and that includes over a weekend, which is always hard to me). Some of the villains were bad, some kept you guessing, and some were despicable. I think many reads of this genre of books would enjoy this story.
I always anticipate an author’s 2nd book, wondering if they were just a flash-in-the-pan with a great first book! Well, this one is even better than the first andI would not have thought that possible. It turns out to be somewhat of a ripped-from-the-headlines storyline that certainly kept this reader engaged until the end. Many twists & turns I did not see coming!! Love the backdrop of Yellowstone National Park! A Sacred Duty: An FBI Yellowstone AdventureA Sacred Duty: An FBI Yellowstone Adventure
This second in The Win Tyler FBI thrillers, finds our hero mired in desk work while he waits for the firearms incident team to clear him for active duty again. He is still at his desk in Yellowstone, although his immediate bosses would like to trnsfer him to the Denver field office as soon as they can. Meanwhile, he is trying to clear old missing persons cases from the Yellowstone office. Almost immediately, he finds a connection between some bones belched to the surface of a hot springs and one of his missing persons. As he investigates in the park, and later on the Kamchatka Peninsula, he realizes that three and perhaps four other missing persons are tied to that first case. As Russian spies and CIA strike teams complicate his days, Win continues to be convinced that he owes the families of the victims closure and the victims justice. The "christian" elelment of thes stories still makes me a bit uncomfortable: it seems too much like proselytizing. But the mystery is intriguing and the resolution mostly satisying. As with the first one, this adventure is set mostly in beautiful Yellowstine, with its weird and wonderful geology, its breathtaking beauty and its wonderful wildlife.
Mrs. Weaver has come forth with a “can’t-put-it-down” read for sure. Agent Tyler’s first case in Yellowstone was interesting and exciting but this one keeps you turning the pages without stopping. Thank you, Mrs. Weaver for a wonderfully intense few hours. A fun read, indeed!
Read the first book. Decided to take a chance on book two. After a third of the way, I began just skipping to various parts on my way to the end. I love Yellowstone, so the hook for reading was easily set, but reading became a fight to reconcile the predictability, the tedium and the all-to-often examples of "deus ex machina" with the attraction of the setting.
I really liked the second book in the series, “ A Sacred Duty”. It is unbelievable how much trouble one person could get into just trying to do what is right. I will look forward to when Luke, Trey and Win become best friends. I look forward to the next in the series and will recommend this book to those who like a good suspense/action story.
Another well written book from the author! Win Tyler once again gets into trouble with the FBI. This time with just digging into a series of cold cases. Characters you can get to know abound. Loved it. Can’t wait for another!
This book was a page turner. The author makes you feel as if you are in the middle of Yellowstone. Her stories are believable. Agent Tyler is believable. The reader struggles alongside him as he tries to do the right thing. Waiting for the next one!
This is 2nd installment. Waiting for the 3rd. Only reason I did not give 5 stars is this author portrays the females as either romantic interests or traitors and incompetent.
Such a great read. In both books the main character has to decide how to assess/judge people. Should it be on what they do or who their reputation. I love where Win lands. Great character development both the good guys and the protagonists. Please keep writing. I am a fan
