Ava Gentry met Andre, thirteen years ago, when he was the officer who responded the night she was attacked. Years later, he's still treating her like that scared and broken girl with no self-esteem in need of saving. Every chance he gets, he tries to destroy her with his words and actions leaving her feeling unworthy of love and respect.
The sad reality was it wasn't the first time she's felt this way. From being abused by her grandfather to even worse foster homes; suffering has almost destroyed her identity and ability to love herself.
But she's had enough.
Finally standing up for herself, Andre throws her out, destroying her belongings while almost destroying her. On her own and starting over, she realizes the first thing she needs, besides a place to stay and a job is a relationship with God. Yet, things prove harder than she ever imagined, especially when trouble won't let go, and neither will Andre.
In Almost Destroyed, follow Ava's journey from heartache and brokenness to restoration and finding the strength to love herself again.
Lakisha Johnson, native Memphian and author of over ten titles was born to write. She’ll tell you that “Writing didn’t find me, it’s was engraved in my spirit when I was created.” Along with being an author, she is an ordained minister, co-pastor, wife, mother and the product of a large family.
She is an avid blogger at kishasdailydevotional.com and social media poster where she utilizes her gifts to encourage others to tap into their God given talents. She won’t claim to be the best at what she does nor does she have all the answers, she is simply grateful to be used by God
This book was amazing and I’m ready for it. Ava has not had a great life to date and she thought Andre was the answer until she realized she deserved better and why. God is always on time even when we do not feel like he is and he surrounds us with the people we need.
This book spoke to my soul. I felt the presence of God through the entire book. Exceptional work and the storyline was so realistic, emotional and helped with giving a perception of many struggles and truths.
"Almost Destroyed" by Lakisha Johnson is a gripping read that keeps you hooked with Ava's tough journey. Poor Ava faces relentless challenges, and Andre's craziness adds intense drama. He really needs to locked underneath the prison for eternity
Lakisha Johnson came out swinging with this release. The story grabs you from the very beginning and doesn't let go until the jaw-dropping end. I cannot wait til part two!
Another great book. This why LaKisha Johnson is my absolute favorite. This book will definitely make you check yourself in a healthy way. Now the way it ended….. a whole other story, but I’ll wait
Title: Almost Destroyed Author: Lakisha Johnson Publisher: Twins Write 2 Reviewed By: Arlena Dean Rating: Five Review: "Almost Destroyed" by Lakisha Johnson My Assessment:
Wow! What a read this author delivers to the reader. Poor Ava had it had, but in the end, will she be able to see the blessing that God has restored in her life. Ava went through quite a struggle, and for some reason, things kept on happening to her...from her ex-boyfriend that wouldn't take no for an answer and a job that tried so hard to discredit her in her knowledge of what was going on. The story leaves one to say Wow and at the end, just after her baptism, what Ava found out from a friend leaves the reader with a cliffhanger that we will have to pick up in the next series to find out what in the world is coming next for Ava. It seems like Satan is around the corner every step of the way for Ava; however, we know that there is a God that will protect her in it all.
The author did an excellent job with this story in that it will help many people if they trust in God and don't give up.
Almost Destroyed...Another Powerful Message of Ministry by Lakisha Johnson
Almost Destroyed...Indeed a 21st Century parable. I'm always moved by the way the author is able to do an outstanding job of weaving real struggles, oftentimes "raw" experiences with the faith experience and the Word of God. The book is one that keeps the reader engage as the main character Ava seeks to navigate her painful past and abusive relationships on so many levels. The writer presents Ava's story in such a way that leaves the reader guessing and unsure of Ava's responses, decisions, and in fact if she will ever experience joy and wholeness. I'm appreciative of the author's inclusion of the reference to real strategies for healing from trauma - good therapy and a relationship with God, as was the journey for Ava. Indeed, the book had a lot of unexpected turns, and ended with an unexpected revelation. A must read. The good news for readers, there will be a sequel.
I enjoyed the beginning of the book, but half way through it felt like there was a lot of fluff. I initially enjoyed the spiritual aspect but eventually it felt like too much, every conversation included a lengthy prayer & then multiple occasions included songs with a paragraph or so of the song’s lyrics.. fluff. It made it hard to get through eventually. I got tired of Ava being so pitiful, constantly woe is me, like girl stand up! Also a lot of the information was so repetitive. Constantly repeating her childhood story then constantly repeating the Andre events. I was so tired of Ava spilling her heart out to every person she encountered. And honestly this story could’ve been wrapped up in one book, no need for a part two. Some people absolutely loved this book & eagerly moved to read part two so I recommend that you read it for yourself
Wow. This is one of the best works of Christian fiction I've read. This story was truly a work of art. Between the flow of the story, as well as the lessons that are sprinkled throughout the story I was hooked from beginning to end. Now it does end in a cliffhanger, but thankfully the next book is out. Several instances I saw myself in the main character, and one of the best things that was addressed was a scripture passage that abusive church leaders tend to harp on as if abuse is not happening in that situation. Be sure you are careful regarding the triggers in the story. I read it for our book club with a discussion with the author, and the three of us are planning to discuss the second book when everyone else finishes it, and I can't wait. Great job
This was my first time reading a book by this author but I was intrigued when it popped up as a recommendation on my kindle. It was also my first time reading what I considered to be Christian fiction. Not sure it if was or not but it seemed that way with all the references throughout the book to God. This didn’t bother me and I liked the fact that it wasn’t that just because you believe in God things will easily fall into place because that’s not reality. You will struggle which Ava did a lot in the book but with Gods help and guidance you will get through as she did. I was surprised with the ending and curious to see what’s next for Ava in part 2. Definitely a good read but may not be for everyone if you aren’t into God/religious references in books.
I loved everything about the book. It had me in tears, happy, mad, sad, grateful, and thankful. So many people have gone through similar things in their lifetime and didn't know how to cope with it and end up losing their lives, but I thank God for all the praying friends Ava had surrounding her. Andre was messed up as well. From the way his mom treated him, he needed some serious counseling. Katrina is a hot mess, and I hope she finds her way back to God before it's too late. I'm about to read part 2. Thanks for the scriptures and prayers. I definitely needed them.
I like the fact the characters are flawed. They need therapy as well as GOD. I love the fact the author is introducing professional councilors to believers. I grew up in a time when pastors and their wives did counseling for members prayer and scriptures. I remover going to a larger C.O.G.I.C where they had a licensed counselor on staff. Prayer is great but many folks need professional help with some of issues they are dealing with. Great story will look for part 2
I loved how I could tell that the author was doing more than writing to entertain. This book is therapeutic to the broken soul. One thing that sticks out the most was Ava’s therapy session and the reality that Ava was forced to confront. We’ve got to hold people to a higher standard when it comes to respect . If we allow the disrespect and abuse, then people will not press the issue as long as they are benefiting. Author LJ did an excellent job with the themes and the plotting. I was not able to stop turning the pages!
I kept coming across this book and Finally, I was like let me see was it’s about. Well I didn’t expect what I got from this book. I was crying out to GOD, praying, repenting, writing down and reading mentioned bible verses. Praying the WORD of GOD. Ava’s story resonated with me in so many ways. I could go on but I’ll just say I truly thank the LORD for gifting the writer with such talent and for her using it for His glory. Ms. Johnson thank you. To GOD be the glory. HALLELUJAH
This book was inspirational, and on point about abused, which we all know is real whether it be physical, emotional or otherwise. I enjoy the sermons and prayers they have me in tears with chills all over my body. Was happy that Ava Gentry found the Lord and got baptised . Leaving her abused and making life on her own. What a lovely story waiting for book 2 . Love it.

U came with it author, Minister, PreacHer! As with every book that I have read from this author, I take the time to go to prayer meeting, bible study a of course church. This book although Christian fiction, causes me to check my landline and cell phone to not only have the right number but, stay connected! As always, I'm happy "Ava" accepted the salvation freely available!
On a scale of 1 to 10, my anticipation is 100 to reading "Almost Destroyed 2"!
Ok I almost stopped reading this when Ava accepted Andre's proposal but am happy I continued to see it was a ruse to get out of the restaurant. She did get on my nerves initially playing the victim but she grew in character and strength in time. Andre was really a piece of work and I hope he goes to jail for a very long time. I'm still on the fence about Katrina and her knowing about Andre beforehand or not but we'll see how it plays out. Good book.
I love a good christian fiction but this book was taking me through and under right along with Ava. My heart broke in a million pieces for her but I’m glad she was willing to do the work to walk away whole, healthy and healed. June is a ride or die Christian bestie everyone needs and i love the community that she has surrounding her on this journey. Andrews needs to end up beneath the jail… i definitely can’t wait until part two
I originally did not care for this book, I found Ava so annoying and over the top. she immediately jumped to the defense even in simple situations. I decided I wasn't interested in continuing.
2 weeks later by accident I clicked back into the book and decided to keep going. it definitely got better and you begin to understand how bad her mentality was after being abused.
Such a great read! I am NOT a reader but was determined to do so and this was the first book I read cover to cover as an adult! It was SO good and had me wanting to read ALL the time. It does minister to your heart but is also entertaining and captivating all at the same time! Truly enjoyed this book, now I’m headed to ‘Already Destroyed 2’ because I NEED to know what happened next..haha
I am sooo mad at you! How could you leave us with an ending like that. Awwww hell to the naw in my Whitney Houston voice. I lost sleep trying to see how the the story ends, just dirty. I feel disrespected right now:). I felt bad for Ava, but she frustrated the hell out of me for not reporting all the times Andre contacted her after the restraining order was issued.
Overall the book was great but how can 1 woman meet so many people who bring God into her life all at once, is that reality? The essence of the book is real there are so many people who need to find SELF again and trust HIM because HE is always present. I really enjoyed the sermon. Now finish it cause that cliffhanger hurt my feelings.
This is an eye opening story of domestic violence as well as physical and emotional abuse. Sometimes we don't know what compels us or others to stay in unhealthy relationships, but I was glad when Ava found her voice. I'm happy that she turned to God and that so many Godly people came into her life.
The story was just awesome. It had amazing characters. The author left us with a little cliffhanger so you're ready for the next book. I'm hooked. I have to read the next book. Ms. Johnson never disappoints you in her writings. I needed to hear those words . Thank you.
The was a good story of a woman named Ava, who was in a verbally abusive relationship with her boyfriend Andre. It seems that the more Ava tried to move forward in her life the more obstacles blocked her path. Through the help of friends she eventually had to turn to God. With each step closer to God her faith was tested, but with prayer and faith Ava kept getting up and fighting.
OMG. LJ has done it again. When I say this book will have you on the edge of your seat from the beginning to the end, babaaay!!!! I was able to relate to each obstacle Ava went through and now better understand the healing process. I finished it in one afternoon and am now about to read part 2.
This was so much a hit home for me. It was like so much of this book related to me. I love the scriptures and even screenshots some of them. Even up to feeling lost and low self esteem. Going back to GOD, getting baptized. I love this book and in to the next one. With deep love from a serious reader, LaKisha Simms
Oh my goodness. This is such a great book. The topics touched, verbal, physical and emotional abuse. Not to mention narcissism, self-worth, self-esteem or the lack thereof. I can't wait to start part 2. I know there's got to be glory after all Ms. Ava has gone through. I can't wait to see the mighty hand of God at work.
