Esther et Rita se rencontrent dans un atelier de dessin. La première, jeune artiste, anime un cours de dessin de nu pour adultes. Rita, plus âgée, mère divorcée, est modèle pour arrondir ses fins de mois. Aussi différentes soient-elles, les deux femmes sont néanmoins liées en tant que dessinatrice et modèle. Une relation qui tourne autour de la vulnérabilité et de la physicalité, autour du fait de regarder et d'être regardée. En dehors de ces moments, chacune mène sa propre vie. Toutes deux luttent contre leur propre passé, leurs propres insécurités. Esther ne trouve pas l'amour, Rita a une relation difficile avec sa fille... Les deux femmes attendent quelque chose et, en attendant, elles se débrouillent comme elles peuvent. Peau est une histoire de corps et de mise à nu. Une histoire sur le vieillissement, la maternité, l'idéal de beauté, la soif de perfection et l'impact du temps. Sur les cicatrices, la honte, la fierté, la sexualité, l'intimité. Et sur la vie. Zo genoten van dit prachtboek. Ik heb de graphic novel Vel gelezen, een samenwerking van Sabien Clement en Mieke Versyp.

Het verhaal gaat over Esther, een tekenares die houdt van modeltekenen. Ze ontmoet Rita, die model wil staan voor de groep. Beiden worstelen met hun eigen verleden, hun eigen onzekerheden over zichzelf. Esther slaagt er niet in de liefde te vinden, Rita heeft een moeilijk contact met haar dochter.

Vel is een prachtig boek. De tekeningen van Sabien Clement zijn ontroerend, meeslepend, overweldigend, ik vond ze zelfs: bedwelmend. Wat een gevoel. Wat een persoonlijkheid. Wat een cadeau.

Sabien Clement vertelt over hoe Vel tot stand kwam in aflevering 76 van mijn podcast 'drie boeken'. Ze vertelt ook uitgebreid over haar passie voor modeltekenen.

Kunstwerk wel dit, prachtig tekenwerk en mooie zinnen 👌

Esther en Rita kruisen elkaars pad in een tekenatelier, tekenaar en model. Twee vrouwen ergens halverwege hun leven en tussen zich staande houden en omvallen in. En verder ga ik daar weinig aan toevoegen.

'Was ze maar hier, mijn ma. Ze zou me kunnen zeggen hoe je dat doet.
Hoe je een moeder kan zijn voor een kind dat groot wordt.
En hoe je verder moet als het weggaat.'

Quite simply superb!

Wereldberoemd zijn de foto's door Eadweard Muybridge van een galopperend paard. Niet alleen bewees hij hiermee dat paarden in galop van de grond komen, hij werd er ook de voorloper mee van de cinema.
Sabien Clement gebruikt eenzelfde tactiek. Ze tekent de verschillende stappen die een personage zet om bijvoorbeeld een trap op te wandelen naast elkaar op het blad. Dat geeft meteen een bijzondere dynamiek aan de schetsachtige tekeningen. En dan is er nog het spannende kleurgebruik, met het roodgekleurde haar, de roze laarsjes, de gele kledij-accenten, de tactiliteit van papier bij momenten, en er is de grote suggestiviteit in de tekeningen. Waar de tekst al eens iets te expliciet is, ontwijken de tekeningen het vormen van een plaatje bij het verhaal, maar vertellen ze zelf ook zaken die niet in de tekst staan.
Het verhaal vervlecht de levens van een jonge vrouw Esther die supergraag tekent en bij haar thuis tekenlessen organiseert, en een oudere vrouw Rita die om haar echtscheiding te verwerken naaktmodel wordt in die tekenlessen. Ze groeien naar elkaar. Rita voelt zich bij Esther opnieuw moeder, nu haar eigen dochter amper nog op bezoek komt en Esther wordt getroost als de liefde van haar leven ook nog altijd verliefd op zijn ex blijkt.
Het boek wisselt schetsachtige tekeningen, als het ware ontstaan uit de tekensessies met levend model (waarbij je drie minuten krijgt om een essentie op papier te krijgen), af met uitgewerktere, verhalende tekeningen. Het verhaal toont hoe niet altijd alles loopt in het leven zoals gedroomd, maar die 'lelijkheid' van het leven maakt het net dierbaar. Rita en Esther worstelen, maar krijgen aan het eind toch een nieuw, dieper inzicht.

This slow paced graphic novel explores the life of two women at different stages of life and the connection they make in a life drawing class. Wonderfully illustrated.

Friendship and belonging are at the heart of Skin, the debut graphic novel from writer Mieke Versyp and artist Sabien Clement. The story follows Esther, a young aspiring artist who runs a live figure drawing class, and Rita, a divorcee and empty-nester who mourns the recent passing of her own mother. The two meet when Rita suddenly decides that being a nude model for the class is what she wants to do next, and despite their rather differing life circumstances, the pair become fast friends. Skin is a charming tale of female friendship, and all driving towards the core theme of learning to be comfortable in one's own skin. Other characters do come in and out of the narrative like Rita's daughter and Esther's new boyfriend, but largely to serve the character arcs of the two main characters. Though the subject matter here is less than appealing to me, I was still able to appreciate the poignancy of the core themes presented here.

What really did make this book stand out was Sabien Clement's incredible artwork. There's a lot of formal play throughout, with the figure designs rapidly shifting between detailed expressionism to gestural stick figures with ease - a design choice consistent with the setting of a live drawing class. When Clement opts into using the simplistic designs, the layouts are open yet linear, very much in line with what one would expect from a Jules Feiffer strip. And yet, Clement demonstrates that she's not willing to conform to a single style and will go through several pages using crayons, pastels and watercolors to present moods and setting changes, all done expertly. You'd think that Versyp and Clement have worked together many times before to operate in tandem so well, given how the poetic quality of the captions work to accentuate the playful layouts. As thoughtful as the narrative can get, it's the creative design choices behind the artwork and layouts that makes Skin a book worth revisiting a few times to digest it all.

Shout-out naar de vrouw van het Besloten Land die me troostte toen een onbekende vijf minuten voor mijn aankomst met het laatste exemplaar van 'Drieman' naar buiten liep, en me dit pareltje aanraadde, omdat ik volgens haar 'geen fan was van de klassieke hokskes'. Echt heel mooi parallelverhaak dat me wat deed denken aan de seizoenen van Ali Smith!

J'ai adoré. Et pourtant ce n'est a priori pas trop mon style de BD (pas de structuration classique, différentes techniques utilisées (dessins, fond kraft, collages, empreintes, etc)). C'était doux et juste, tous les dessins sont parfaitement accordés à l'histoire, et malgré ces éléments changeants, on n'est jamais perdu, on se laisse guider agréablement. Presque 300 pages et on ne les voit pas passer. Je trouve ça d'autant plus remarquable que c'est le fruit d'un travail conjoint entre une autrice et une illustratrice : incroyable que contenu et images s'accordent si bien en formant un tout si parfaitement original.

Jolis dessins, histoire inexistante.

Ik heb lang geweigerd de Goodreads leesuitdagingen aan te gaan, want ik wou lezen voor de kwaliteit. Dit jaar merkte ik dat de app ook leuke "2023 wrapped"-achtige visuals en statistieken maakt en ik plooide. Ik daagde mezelf uit 50 boeken te lezen op het moment dat ik er al 50 achter de kiezen had.

Lezen voor de kwantiteit stimuleerde me om eindelijk eens de prachtige graphic novels en geïllustreerde boeken te lezen die liggen te pronken op mijn bijzettafel en die ik af en toe opensla met de gedachte: "Deze houd ik bij voor het goede moment."

Alleen ... wat is het goede moment voor zo'n boek waar uren schrijf- en tekenwerk in is gegaan en dat je dan in enkele uren uitleest? Romans kan je koesteren, meesleuren, strandzand de kaft laten schuren en uitnodigen in je bed. Een graphic novel lezen voelt voor mij als een feestmaaltijd dat uren moest garen in 10 minuten opeten. Ik voelde dat er een perfect moment moest zijn, een ritueel.

Dankzij mijn tijdelijke queeste om voor een willekeurige datum een aantal boeken te lezen, nam ik Vel gisteren vast.

Blijkt dat een druilerige zondagavond het perfecte moment is voor dit boek.

Ik moet nog ondervinden wat de koesterwijze voor geïllustreerde romans is en ik sta open voor suggesties, maar ik denk dat ik ga voor lezen. En herlezen. En opnieuw.

I love this poignant graphic novel about a younger woman struggling to graduate from her adolescence and an older woman navigating being a newly separated empty-nester. They come into each others’ lives at a life drawing class, at a time when each of them is trying to get more comfortable in their skin. The writing and watercolored illustration are both poetic and full of rare humanity; the illustration is also loosely untraditional in its layout and artful in a way that reminded me of Lizzy Stewart’s Alison (which it also shares themes with).

Skin (English edition April 2025) by writer Mieke Versyp and illustrator Sabien Clement is the second book in two weeks that I have read that features “life drawing” (or live modeling for art classes, which often seems to feature nude models, endlessly fascinating as a practice to non-artists). The first, Life Drawing, by Jaime Hernandez, plays it for laughs, and Skin decidedly does not, as it exposes--makes “naked”--the initially fragile self-perceptions of our mc, Rita.

Rita is an empty-nester, middle aged, her mother having passed away recently, so she's a bit emotionally vulnerable and raw, but she nevertheless throws caution to the wind to model nude. There she befriends Esther, an artist who likes to draw the feeling she gets from the figures more than the “correct” photographic representation of the figures. The soul of the figures. So two souls become entwined, and they learn to accept each other and themselves.

True to Esther’s approach, Sabien Clement’s approach to illustration is more emotional, reflective, pencils and crayons and watercolors, sometimes sketchy and immediate, such as is consistent with a life drawing class, inviting us into the friends’ intimacy. And friendship is what it is, not romance, in case you were wondering. They learn together to accept "the skin they are in."

I sometimes had to work to engage with the slow, reflective pace (just me, world events, whatever, probably), but I liked it and recommend it.

I saw this on Hoopla and thought maybe I'd check it out, then it started appearing in some best-of lists that were dropping and knew I had to. And yeah, this is GOOD good. I absolutely love the art, the way the style changes and the way figures sometimes appeared as thing watercolour brushstrokes, I loved the text/speech appearing like inserts into the page instead of text boxes that would cover up or break apart the pages. I really like that this still read like a comic even when so many times there weren't visible panels, because you we still get the idea of flow from the composition of the page. And the way Rita and Esther come together and 'see' something in each other is beautiful to watch unfold.

Oogachtend did it again. Zo genoten van dit pareltje.

Esther tekent graag. Rita wil eens wat nieuws proberen en wordt model. Beide vrouwen worstelen met kwetsbaarheid. Met jezelf openstellen, voor turende blikken van artiesten of voor de liefde van je leven. Ze proberen recht te blijven. Ze proberen hun littekens met trots te dragen, en de drang naar perfectie naast zich neer te leggen. Ze proberen lief te zijn voor hun eigen vel. Maar dat is verdomd moeilijk.

Tekeningen en verhaal vormen een mooi cadeautje.

"Mijn hele leven heb ik gewacht... Tot iemand me zag. Echt zag. En dan komt er eindelijk iemand en die gaat weer weg. Dat klopt toch niet? Niets klopt."
