Hydroponics for Beginners: The Complete Guide to Hydroponic Gardening, Designing and Building Inexpensive DIY Hydroponic Systems, And Growing Vegetables, Fruits, and Herbs in Water
Hydroponics is a revolutionary method of gardening that allows you to grow vegetables, fruits, and herbs in water, without any soil. The word “hydroponics” comes from the ancient Greek formation of “hydro”, meaning water, and “ponics”, meaning labor. In hydroponics, plants can base their roots in a growing medium instead of soil and get the nutrients they need from a nutrient solution, which is essentially nutrients in either liquid or powdered form dissolved in water. That’s right—no soil, no mess! With hydroponics, you can grow plants indoors all year round and not have to rely on weather, which can be so volatile. I’ve been curious about hydroponics, but never thought it was realistic for a hobby gardener like myself. But, I have limited useful space in our yard for growing edible plants - not enough sun.
This book does a great job of listing the types of hydroponic systems, and some are very doable… until you get into the room requirements… controlling light, humidity, heat, oxygenation, CO2, etc.
So, while I think this is not something I’ll be dipping my toe into in the near term, there’s a wealth of useful information that is not strictly limited to hydroponics use… like types of grow lights, strengths and weaknesses, how to take cuttings, dealing with pests and diseases, plus a wealth of resources.
I really appreciate the author’s thoroughness in listing the types of plants that do well or do not do well with each system. Truly a great resource. And I learned a lot about hydroponics!
I’ve read about 5 shorter books so far which all seemed to regurgitate the same facts in a different order in 120 pages or less.
This book is very different! The initial decision of which hydroponics system you should select plus how to make one is still the first couple of sections (as you’d expect) and are much more readable than many of the other books. The details aren’t hidden away in science but made accessible to the complete beginner (hurrah! At last a book I understand!) The author then discusses the best type of plants for which system before going on to cover key plant types and how to grow them. This is the first book I’ve come across from the supposed top 10 in hydroponics that actually does!
So if you’re going to borrow or buy one hydroponics book for a novice, start with this one!
TECHNICAL YET UNDERSTANDABLE. Before purchasing this book, I knew that hydroponics was an art and science that requires attention to technical detail. Having read the book, I know this even more profoundly. There is A LOT to understand and dealing with, but I get the impression it will be worth the effort. The author provides a very clear and balanced view of the different approaches to hydroponics, offering the pros and cons of each approach. He suggests starting with the easier options and explains exactly how to succeed, so I am ready to make a start!
