A ‘magical’ illustrated adventure fantasy tale for children by Irene Edwards telling of dragons, wizards and witches. Imagine yourself making a wish…and it suddenly becoming granted. When a magical wish on a Conch shell whisks Stefan and Megan away from their Welsh coastline beach to the Magic Islands, the children feel lost and are quite unsure of their new environment. They have become marooned. Stefan and Megan follow two witches, Mogul and Drot to Wish-What Castle. They meet Nester the Jester, his strange pet – a dragon named Vanhalen, Ambrosious, the Wizard of the magical Enchanted Forest, Eglador, their guide, the Aliens of the Heavens known as the Purple Wizards, Gorad the teacher, and the Valendor Elves. Trouble strikes the island when the witches arrive and when the Purple Wizards become shipwrecked on the islands’ coastal beach. The Magic Islands become overpowered by wicked magical powers and mischief which the children witness and they are asked to solve the islands problems, capture the wizards and return the islands to peace.
A beautiful story for the entire family. A magical adventure that will keep you entertained. Full of magic and adventure. Kept me smiling all the way. I highly recommend.
I bought this book for my god daughter and will buy it for any other 8-10 year olds I come across. I loved the characters, the plot was full of surprises and it was written in such a way that it didn’t talk down to children which I think is very important. Highly recommend it
What an amazing magical read. I have read other magical books before, but that one tops them all. It is very different but just fantastic. With great illustrations. loved them to see all now then, as they pop up between.
It's lovely cover book with loads of adventures and loads of characters very subtle and interesting and loads of action words with excitement any 8 year old will totally love this book
This is the first in the Magic Islands series of books from Welsh author Irene Edwards, and it is something of a treat. These are charming books for younger kids, I’d say from the eight to twelve age range, and the series gets off to a promising start with this exciting tale combining light-hearted magical fantasy with an important environmental message. There may be some people who say why does this always have to be the case; why can’t we just allow kids to be kids without always telling them something they will inevitably learn soon enough anyway, but Irene’s book doesn’t preach; it does a very good job of getting the message across in a way that doesn’t overpower the story or get kids asking too many serious questions, that message being a clear one of loving your environment and respecting the species on it – and you can tell that Irene absolutely loves hers.
I enjoyed this book, and disclosure is due here: I did help Irene work on it a little, but this in no way influences my review. It was a pleasure to read, both before and after, and I highly recommend it if you have kids around that age. The fantasy is of the childlike kind: dragons, wizards and witches who all mean well, but can be quite naughty. Children might learn a lot from Magic Islands – but, more importantly, I’m sure they’ll love it, too.
The story was a carpet ride of non-stop magical hijinks. The main characters each unique were a lot of fun. When next I find myself on a beach, I will be sure to keep a lookout for any conch shells I might find.
A Spooky Wish, Magic Islands by Irene Edwards This book was written with young people in mind but can be enjoyed by all ages. It is filled with wizards, witches and magical beings. They have humorous names to make you smile. An adventure into a magical place and characters, fun read.
