Gabrielle Thomson left her whole life behind. Escaping the turmoil from her abusive ex. With her trusty old vehicle breaking down in the middle of nowhere and on a rainy night. Spotting a small light in the distance, she walks to a nearby run down mansion.
Living alone in a huge mansion, Matthew Riding loves punishing those who prey on the vulnerable.
One rainy night, metal clangs around the building, making him quickly finish what he was doing. Opening the door, he sees a beautiful black haired woman, soaked through who needs his help.
Love finds a way through all the darkness and madness.
Matthew is great character. He is a normal man by day but by night he extracts revenge and kills men who use their fists and worse on women and children. He tortures them and kills them in painful ways. He has a tragic past and all the markings of a wonderful morally grey hero.
When Gabrielle turns up on his doorstep covered in bruises and looking for shelter he wants to keep her safe forever.
Unfortunately I just didn't connect with the love between these two. I am all for insta love in all its intense and OTT ways, but this went from 0 to 20 at best. All the right things were said but there was not heat, fire or passion behind the love it felt flat for me personally. Although I really enjoyed Matthew taking revenge and learning more about his back story. This definitely has great bones but unfortunately the love you element fell flat.

I liked the last two books that I read by this author, so I decided to try this one.
This was a novella, so it was a short read, but it was satisfyingly dark, and spicy. The spiciness was good, although I felt there wasn't much of a build-up, I would have liked a little bit longer for the chemistry to develop. But if you like dark short stories, or you're looking for something spicy to read, this is probably a good choice.

It's a short story about a woman running from an abusive boyfriend, finding shelter with a stranger who treats her better. She falls fast, and when she finds out his secret, will she stay? It could have been better written, and the story is a little dark.
