I purchased this book because of the amazing reviews on Amazon and oh boy, they were all right. Such a good book with great characters that keeps you obsessed with every page since the first one. I couldn't put this down until I ended. I loved so much this story, not get me wrong I was scared to death at some points but thats what I look for in the books I'm reading... emotions. You really conect with the first family so you cry their deaths and then conect with the new one and suffer with them too! You feel their fear and their desperation. Totally recommended!
There is adult content in this book and may trigger some readers.
I have over the past couple of years found some amazingly scary haunted house and ghost stories. I have to tell you this is the one of the best I’ve run acrossed in a while. The haunting is pure evil. The setting is Martha’s Vineyard, MA, so not the typical setting for a haunted house.
You have a beautiful loving family in the prologue. It’s the autumn of 1863. It’s a hard life, they live and work the land, which is a very difficult task. The dad, mom and two small girls have a home, a roof over their heads, food on their plates, the love and worth of a complete family unit and their faith in themselves and God to maintain them. Dad works the Forrest Ranger and the Forrest is his home, he fixes fences, make sure there’s no poaching on the land, keeps the area beautiful, updated and repairs areas that are needed. Even though they are in the middle of no where, it’s a good life for his young family. The girls help the mom cook, clean, and keep up the household. The girls seem happy and the family is loving to each other. They like to have dinner ready for dad after a hard day at work. They enjoy a hardy meal, get their chores done, and get ready for bed. The girls read the Bible. The girls beg their dad to tell them a good night story and after, all head to sleep. But then out of no where tragedy strikes this family with heat, fire and death, no warnings, just death, devastation and horror.
Hundreds of years pass. There is now a new beautiful house in the Forrest. Another beautiful family move in. Mom homeschools her two lovely daughters. Dad takes over the duties and is also a Forrest Ranger. He’s responsible for maintaining and taking care of the area. But bad things start to happen, a strange man watch’s the family from the Forrest. A terrible dangerous accident with one of the girls at home happens, and her dad thought he saw the accident, but maybe he didn’t. A strange presence enters into the house when the family is away on the emergency. Fresh food starts going extremely bad the day it’s brought home to be prepared. The sisters start to make friends with two little girls inside the house. The mom and dad think these little girls are their daughters imaginary friends. But the bad man that’s now in the house scares the little girls very much, they do their best to protect the sisters from the bad man. The girls are never seen by the parents. The sisters change, their schoolwork becomes odd, they start not wanting to sleep by themselves. The mom starts to notice strange behavior with her daughters and their cat, she also gets glimpses of the bad man. Other strange and weird things are going on around the house. These just get more strange, bizarre, unexplainable, horrifying and violent.
The backstories of the characters and storyline is extremely scary. There are twists and turns that will frighten, horrify and surprise you. There is violence, gore, sexual assaults on children, and rape, this is not for the faint of heart and may trigger strong emotions in some readers. The climax of the story is fantastically horror filled and satisfying. This story will stay with you into your nightmares.
Loved this book had me hooked from the beginning ,I've read a few of Ian Carroll's books and I see he's teamed up with a brilliant new writer paddy Mullen. Can't wait to read more of mullen's work, love ghost stories and this is a perfect read easy to follow characters .lots of twists and turns this has left me wanting more. If like me you want something to read on a cold dark night this is definitely the book for you. I definitely recommend this book well done Carroll and Mullen look forward to more in the future
Another one of Ian Carroll's books devoured in pretty short order! Difficult to say much without giving anything away, but if you enjoy his usual fare, you will like this. Characters you really want to get behind, unexpected outcomes, some of which you may not wish to see and a pervading presence of evil to be overcome, all entwined in a tale well told. Next please!
