All of his adult life, Jasper Johnson has gotten exactly what he wants, which explains why his beloved benefactor’s request is unexpected and irritating. It’s 1970 and this flashy playboy extraordinaire has the world by its tail; and, what he wants now is more, more, more. In a shocking reversal, his indulgent benefactor pulls him from cavorting across Europe and Africa and instead, ties his future to attaining a college degree—once and for all. No graduation. No funds. No future.

What initially seems doable quickly becomes appalling; Why Three Falls Tennessee at All Saints Negro Christian College? What in the world can this rinky-dink town have to offer? To top it off, Tony, his sometimes bodyguard and ofttimes conscience, has come along to keep him out of trouble. Why worry? The pickings at All Saints are few. Hardly a pretty woman to be found; surely none worth a conquest. Ok , Jasper resolves, finally, I can do this . What could possibly go wrong? He’ll graduate, get his inheritance, and be on his way. No more benefactor. No more Tony. No more ties that bind. No problem. Right?

Escaping the dreary existence of her Chicago home, Karen Stone heads for Tennessee. Karen wants more than anything to be freed from the ties of her parents; the familiarity of her church, with Pastor Duckworth; and the drudgery of junior college, with its mundane education. Young, resolved, and beloved, Karen is beckoned here by a promise of a higher calling. In less than a year at Longview Nursing Home, she is known for being a passionate, clever, and resourceful young woman. And despite her new focus, Karen continues to attract the attention of more than one handsome young man. S niffing-around , as her aunt might say. But none of this satisfies that the reason she’s come to All Saints. So, when Jasper Johnson appears on the scene with his alluring eyes and wily charm, she is uniquely unmoved.

Jasper Johnson, who’s not used to being ignored, pursues the elusive Miss Stone. His constant machinations bring him and Karen into an unlikely union. While Karen deliberates their future, or lack thereof, she faces a trauma sent to destroy the very essence of who she is. Too hurt to persevere, she flees to her childhood hoping to restore the security which was so violently wrenched from her.

Following Karen, Jasper reunites with his Chicago family. While there, he discovers that his past demands a reckoning; Karen’s love comes at a great price; and, if he’s not careful, he could face a devastation of his own.

Warring with their pasts and present, Karen and Jasper are indeed “Falling.” Hurling to the earth below, will they be or find the love strong enough to pull the pieces together?

Take this fourth journey into the world of romance with author Sherry Lucille. In this novel, she broadens her work centered on interracial relationships to venture into her first Black-on-Black love story. Cleverly, this new direction doesn’t leave us wondering about our old friends, as Sherry includes some of our favorite characters from Love Changes, Love Dreams , and Love Promises.

“ Falling ” manages to weave humor and joy with a sensitive and serious topic. And like all of her novels, it will leave you with “a hope, and a prayer.”

“ Falling is an endearing journey into the heart and soul of finding true love despite the human condition and the challenges of everyday life.”

confession: I am the author ✍🏽

I love this book because it deals with human frailties. It delves into what happens when life circumstances shatter our perception of self.

In this story, strong-willed Karen and world-wise Jasper have to redefine who they think they are and see if their new identities are yet compatible.

Question: are the answers they seek within or without? I believe as humans, we all come to a point when we ask the same.
