A swift narration of political events. So many names and so many places and dates enumerated in a brisk sequence. The book reads like a time line, only that it dismisses the line itself and choses to narrate the whole time series of major events. It is too bad that the history with what appears to be quite a colorful palate is merely glossed over. I only read it to get some idea of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. And yes, I did get some idea of what was going on during the golden age. Nothing more.
This is an informative short history of Poland. I wanted to read a history of Poland because they are NATO’s first line of defense against their belligerent neighbor to the East. It unbelievable that Poland has gone through so many centuries of aggression from Russia and other countries. And it is just as hard to believe that Russia is still stuck in the past and hasn’t joined the civilized countries of the 21st century.
I particularly liked the last quarter of the book which covered the period from World War II to the early 21st century.
Like many books from Captivating History, this one needs better proofreading. If they cleaned up the text a bit, this could be a four star book.
This is not what I hoped it would be about wanting to learn more about Poland and my family's heritage. Instead this was a dry timeline about its conflicts with Lithuania. I still read and completed this hoping the content would improve, it did not.
Disappointed in the History of Poland, but I still enjoy the Captivating History series because they are brief lessons. Cannot recommend this one but I look forward to reading different lessons.
After reading the history of Poland I still don't understand why they got kicked around and abused as much as they did by other countries. This well researched and written history tries to explain why they are so resilient. Frankly, I don't know of many other countries who deserve to be so proud of their hard won liberty as do the Polish people. I applaud them and their tenacity for living.
I enjoyed this book I felt it gave a nice concise history of Poland. I really wish a small map would be included with each chapter just to have a visual idea of the changes to its boarders!! It does list rivers for references. But there is no map in the book showing these rivers. I think I will be reading more books from this series.
The rich history of Poland is both complex and captivating. This text concisely presents both of these characteristics in a way that stimulates additional research and better understanding of this marvelous country. Read this text while in Poland which greatly enhanced the visit.
