For when you breathe, I am your air. For when your heart beats, I am its pulse. For when you are far away, look at our star.
When events out of their control split the family apart, Marius, Kyle, and Claudia are challenged beyond belief. In the desperate race for power, their enemies will stop at nothing to ensure they destroy Marius and those he loves. Kyle and Claudia have to navigate treacherous waters in Rome to deal with their adversaries, and separate allies from foes, whereas Marius has his own struggles to deal with, far from his loved ones. As an unexpected and shattering blow leaves them reeling, Kyle has to be stronger than ever before to keep them from sinking into despair. Will their enemies finally shatter the small family, or will their love prevail, and conquer all?
Please This book’s story is set in Ancient Rome, loosely based on the times during Trajan’s reign. However, the emperor and all the characters are fictitious, and do not reflect real historical events of those times. “Pulsus Cordis Mei” is not a historical fiction, but rather a queer romance set in a historical setting, depicting fictitious events. The language of the book does not reflect the language used during ancient times. Roman names have sometimes been adapted to fit the story, and some of them are purely fictional.
Maxime is a queer author who writes about guys falling in love in various places and times. Although the books could be labelled as queer romance laced with erotica, they do not fit a single genre, and are filled with drama, and sometimes darkness. Maxime likes to explore complex emotions, the journey to self-discovery, and living a life true to oneself, and their characters often struggle before finding happiness. Maxime has an MA in language and literature, and a long international teaching career as teacher of English language and literature. Being multilingual, they also love incorporating various languages in their works. On top of being an avid reader, Maxime loves horse riding, hiking with their dog and spending time with their family.
Reread and adding a star, because to write a book of this scope and depth and across the years and to keep the focus on the love between two men in an impossible relationship, that deserves another star. Also, I read this series a year or two ago and never rated or reviewed. All three books deserve a more in depth review. For now, I highly recommend and I enjoyed the rereads.
Book III is everything I’ve come to expect from Maxime Jaz’s exceptional creative imagination. I may have said it before in response to books I & II, but I love the writing, love the story-telling, love the characters (including convincing three-dimensional side characters), love the books.
Here there is the poetic prose and vivid imagery, heart-stopping—and frequently heart-breaking—action. There are confrontations, attempted murder, and intrigue in Rome; at war, there is betrayal and sacrifice. Everywhere there are enemies who will stop at nothing, but also unexpected friends.
Most of all, I adore that this super book, like the first two, is filled with love in all its aspects and expressions: love between Dominus and slave, love between husband and wife, love between parents and children. Perhaps this is best summed up by the image of Marius and Kyle, despite being so far apart, deriving comfort by looking at the same star, and by the way Kyle knows Marius — “the pulse of my heart”—is alive somewhere in the world. Oh, and when they are all together, the scorching scenes of physical love, sometimes tender, sometimes fierce.
In the dynamic between the main characters, I was deeply affected by differing reactions toward life-changing injuries—an ever-present issue in any account of war. I shed so many tears for Marius, Kyle, and Claudia. Can’t say more because of spoilers. But mistakes that are made are always rendered understandable because of that continual movement between thoughts and actions. As the former diverges from the latter, there is always authorial kindness and understanding for characters’ missteps and forgiveness for actions past. As in the other two books, people are not perfect in real life. Why should they be so in fiction?
In this volume, I also loved that the protagonists I care so much about are joined by two exceptional beasts—Abbas, the lion, and Brutus, the dog—joining Corvus, Marius’s much-loved stallion from previous books. The latter’s treatment is a touching insight into Julius’s feelings about his commander. The scenes between Marius and Abbas are SO beautiful and heart-rending (at the last of these, I cried so much). I was also thrilled with the way Brutus is portrayed as finding, on his own, the means to help Marius. I could say so much more, but the risk of spoilers is too great.
Although I was privileged to read an earlier draft of this book (thank you Maxime Jaz), when my very own copy dropped onto my kindle this morning, my day was set out for me, and I’ve been unable to put it down. This is a fabulous book that always has love at its pulsing heart.
This was a fabulous conclusion to the Omnia Vincit Amor trilogy. In this book, Kyle, a slave, and Marius are separated by war. Kyle has agreed to stay home to help care for Marius's wife and children to keep them safe. Marius's wife is loved and accepting of Kyle and Marius's relationship, and enthusiastically joins them at times. Marius, a general for the Roman Empire has been ordered to lead a fierce campaign to secure new territories. He also stands to be named as the next Emperor, if he returns with victory.
This book has danger, betrayals, distrust, brutality, sacrifice, and fights for survival. It holds little back about the raw reality of the times. It also has a sweeping, all-encompassing love spanning decades between Kyle and Marius. Marius would have freed Kyle long before, but two Roman men are unable to have a love affair, yet a physical relationship is allowed with a slave, so Kyle has rejected freedom to stay with the love of his love. This is a most beautiful love story with a great epilogue. The entire series is highly recommended.
Marius, Kyle, and Claudia are back in the stunning conclusion to this series. At the beginning of this part of the story, Marius is thrust back into battle, while Kyle and Claudia face dangers both seen and unseen at home. Despite these challenges, the love between Marius and Kyle remains strong. Jaz weaves an epic tale full of twists and turns that kept me wanting more. I was torn about this book: I was desperate to know what happens, but I didn't want to read too quickly because I didn't want the series to end. A highly satisfying conclusion to a very enjoyable series. (Do take note of the TW/CW; like the other two books in this series, this one does get dark. Also, I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.)
At the end of this journey, I feel sad and yearn for more (wishing for a 4th book and a 5th and a 6th...), but I also feel happy to have been brought into this fictional world filled with amazing characters. I won't tell you about them in this case, not to ruin the surprise, but I can tell you that they have enriched my life and made me experience so much.
Be ready, this trilogy will rip your heart apart with every tear, every wound, every painful memory, then will stitch it back together with every smile, every kiss, every joyful instant.
A great conclusion to an action packed and emotional trilogy about Marius, Kyle and Claudia, whose love for each other is stronger than war and politics. I really rooted them as they struggled to keep their family safe from their many enemies. I also loved the evolution of the characters especially Marius and Kyle. Marius becomes vulnerable while Kyle gets to be the hero on more than one occasion.
