From spoiled rich girl to imprisoned siren—sometimes life sucks. My life was perfect—a cute, loving boyfriend, a rich and well-connected family and an immaculately planned-out future. As it turns out, perfection is a lie. After a random attack, I wake up to discover I’ve turned into a siren, had my vocal cords cut and am now imprisoned at Larkwood Academy, the most dangerous and heavily secured place for humans who have turned into paranormal creatures called shades. Everything here is out to get me—the warden, the guards and even the other shades. As I try to survive, I get closer to the men around me—Kit, a wendigo who is often called the warden’s lapdog, Deacon, a guard who isn’t a shade but also isn’t human, Knox, an incubus who struggles with accepting his own hunger, Brax, a berserker with a bad attitude and sharp tongue and Wade, a void who is far more dangerous than his innocent face and humor would suggest. The longer I stay here and get to know them, the more I realize I can’t trust anyone. Everyone wants me to follow the rules, but I can’t be that girl anymore. They might have stolen my voice, but they can’t keep me silenced.

Audio: 3.5-4 stars for Amber Hartt. I wish that there was a male narrator when the men had their POV. The audio can be found on Everand

Book: 2 stars

Beginning was decent and I liked the premise, but the story didn’t really flow well.

The relationships for one, I didn’t feel any connection between Hera and the guys. Also the way that Hera would say she had a boyfriend then hook up with not one, not 2 but 3 men after that… idk it was weird and idk if this series is for me.

5 Stars - for a captivating read!

This story mesmerized me, as if a true siren stepped off the page and worked her magic.

With Silenced, Jayce Carter has written a captivating tale of characters finding hope in a harsh and brutal world, where people who manifest supernatural abilities and characteristics are seen as abnormalities in society. When they are discovered they are institutionalized and imprisoned, experimented on and made to disappear.

Hera is the heroine who discovers that she is a siren at the moment she is brutally attacked. Her attackers violently silence her, resulting in the loss of her voice.

For fans of reverse harem novels I highly recommend this gem. It's unlike others I've read and is skillfully written.

The majority of Silenced is told from Hera's POV. But some of the chapters are told from the POV of each of the men. In my opinion, the author did an exceptional job of crafting each character.

The unique perspectives of the men in the novel did more than just shed light on the depth of each individual personality. Each POV revealed aspects of the men that made me feel for and with them. Their thoughts and experiences profoundly revealed the true, dirty, and bleak reality of the prison they are in. Their vulnerabilities, personal fears, and insecurities are realistically lived in a wonderfully crafted fictional setting.

As a result of how skillfully Carter wrote each character, the intimacy between Hera and the men is tender and erotic. They revolve around each other in a way that paces the romance beautifully. Nothing is rushed. Each man satisfies Hera's needs in varying ways, not just physically.

There is a cliffhanger, but it's one that is worthy of keeping us in suspense. It leaves Hera at different stages in her relationship with each man, and I LOVE that. There is a natural progression of intimacy and discovery with all of the characters that makes the burn achingly sweet and slow.

Silenced is more than just a reverse harem romance. It's an intriguing mystery and a race toward survival that will make your heart pound in fear for the characters' safety and sanity.

This is a story about Hera's strength and courage to survive in an unforgiving world. She is gathering more than lovers. Even through uncertainty, Hera is cementing bonds between friends and tentatively seeking allies.

I found myself experiencing hope for deep and lasting relationships for her, to keep her safe and loved in a world built on betrayal and lies.

I'm so glad I chose to read this book. I've found another favourite author to follow.

Good story but missing some dept

I really liked the story. The FMC was a bit difficult to like at first. She was a bit of a naïve know it all, but she was meant to be that way.
I was missing some dept in the relationship- and character building department. Everything happened in "jumps". There was nothing between them and then suddenly there was. Some things weren't shown, things that I thought were very important for us to know. Like the morning after for a certain moment (trying not to spoil anything).
There was also a point where she just jumped to a conclusion about the tower being the best place to escape. I did not get how she made that deduction.
But overall I liked the book and I am very interested in reading the next one.

It's never easy to write a book where the main character starts of as a spoiled little rich girl, and still make readers truly like her at the end of that book. Jayce Carter managed to do precisely that. Hera's parents have always made it clear they knew what was good for Hera; her entire past, present and future were clearly mapped out as the perfect dutifull daughter they wanted and needed her to be. When a mugging triggers her to show powers as a Siren though, everything changes. Locked up in Larkwood Academy, Hera will need to reinvent herself, while everyone around her detests her presence as the daughter of the people who created the prison they are living in...

Jayce Carter created a very interesting world in this start of a new series; one I'm looking forward to reading more about. In this book the focus seems to be on the world building and the character building of Hera. While we get small snippets about the new men in Hera's life, it's clear there is still a lot we don't know about them. Still, I already like Wade and Knox. Wade because I love an inexperienced guy who's eager to learn, Knox because he's an incubus with very interesting ideas about feeding.

Interesting first book in a series, and I'm absolutely checking out the rest once it's getting released.

Reverse harem(some MM but not within harem)/multi POV/paranormal/academy/slow burn/age-gap

First book in the Larkwood Academy and does have to be read first. Does end on a minor cliffhanger.

Hera comes from a wealthy family. Her whole life has pretty much already been dictated for her. From where she will go to college to who she’s going to marry. However, her plans are changed drastically when she has her throat slit during a brutal attack, is saved and wakes up at Larkwood Academy. Larkwood is a school for people of all ages that have been turned into creatures (aka ‘shades’) by an infection the government monitors.. a government her parents are part of. They keep calling Hera a ‘muted’ or ‘silenced siren’ since her attack left her with no voice. But they have to be mistaken right? She tries to convey to them that she doesn’t belong there… even though she can feel a power humming inside her, even thought she saw her attackers ears bleeding out when she screamed…

Every one in the academy knows who she is and knows that her parents are responsible for putting the shades there. Guards continue to tell her she should get comfortable because she will never leave. When she starts to form unlikely relationships with a few guys around her, she starts to find out that shades really don’t leave the academy and the ones that get sent to the North Tower never return. What happens in that tower that prevents shades from returning? When she comes to the disturbing realization that no one is going to come rescue her, she becomes determined to get her self out. She has to decide if she should trust in the only ‘friends’ she made or heed the warning to trust no one and only look out for herself.

This was a great introduction to this series! This book grabbed me from the beginning and left me questioning what was going to happen. There isn’t much smexy time going on here since she is still forming the relationships with her guys, but its not from lack of trying on her part. 😉 I loved the way the history of the academy and the creatures were explained in levels of power ranking and how rare they were. We were left on a cliffhanger and I ready to see where Hera and her guys go from here.

Ah so I wasn’t quite prepared for how dark this book really is. I didn’t quite grasp that it’s more of a prison/asylum style story than an academy story. It also has an overall theme of medical torture and essentially being trapped in a pretty hopeless situation. It felt like the obstacles are insurmountable, not just in the academy but also in the external world as well.

Hera’s belief that she’ll be able to it only escape but be able to slip back into her old relationship also feels incredibly naive given everything that’s going on. Especially because in the beginning we’re led to believe she doesn’t even like that guy. I feel like that whole line of thinking should just be cut out cause it doesn’t make sense based on everything else we learn about Hera and her personality.

Anyway, I don’t think the story was bad, but I almost quit reading it a few times because it just made me so depressed.

My Review
.☆。• *₊°。 ✮°。

This book scratched my itch for a good reverse harem! I've unfortunately been on a bad book spree, so this book is like a hopeful promise that I will soon come across a GOOD ASS RH CAUSE DAMN!

Anyways, with this series! It was an OK series! Nothing to really blow me out of my shoes or feel like someone deserves their ass to be eaten- but it was a good fix! I didn't have much of a connection with the characters but I sure did get tense if something happened to them. The angst was good, not too much, not too little (well at least for me). I don't like too much angst in my shit, I'm already dealing with my own problems LMAOOO!

As I said before, the characters are okay, we're placed in the FL POV the majority of the time, so expect silence. She's a siren who lost her voice so we don't see her true power smdh. I feel a little bittersweet about With the ML's they were okay, it was kinda of hard for me to really FEEL for them due to their problems. The FL even said she's tired of the men thinking she can fix them.

I had a complicated sentiment about Knox (the incubus). I feel as though his plot wasn't tied up at the end, specifically about his relationship well...with relationships. This man says he's not gay but prefers men to feed off of...

So the FL asked "Why not woman" and this beanbag head still didn't explain why. I get to the last book and still no explanation! She gives an offer multiple times to help, but this man hates himself so much he pushes the FL away and goes back to sleeping with men. Something he clearly shows resistance to! Bruh wtf is going on?! It's so damn bad that when we get to the middle of the 3rd book, Way to make someone feel wanted.

Bruh his character is so damn confusing to me! There was a brief M/M scene with the FL where And you tryna tell me this man don't got no sugar in his tank?

Knox is in a full-blown identity crisis chile smh...

Nothing really happened after that. It was brief reminders specifically with I think two of the MLs side-eye him wondering if there was more going on than they thought. But that was it. So I guess if you like a book where there's an M/M scene but no M/M romance this is for you! Don't yuck someone's YUM! Moving on!
.☆。• *₊°。 ✮°。
There are 5 members of the harem, 2 of them had past lovers, and 1 of those 2 Wade (the void) is a virgin, with no past lovers, but he sure does have insecurity issues just like Knox. And we already spoke about Knox smdh... Knox has a twin brother, but not much about the twin past relationships, and no OW drama with him. The last 2 were the ones I mentioned at the start.

The only person who was actively stepping out of the harem was so if you are okay with a little cheating (?), read this book! But if it's a hard NO, maybe you should reconsider because these ARE broken men we're talking about.
.☆。• *₊°。 ✮°。

Before the FL got taken she had a boyfriend named Aaron and a best friend named Moa. Right from the start we see that Aaron and Moa had more connection with each other than the FL and her BF. So I guess you can say it was foreshadowing. When the FL got taken, she videocalled Moa weeks later and Aaron was in the same room as Moa. And Aaron's weak ass excuse ALL THE WAY UP to the 3rd book! Was that his life changed too and Moa and him found comfort in each other.

So if I slap the dogshit out of you, and told you it gave me comfort- you'll take that as a reasonable excuse?

Moa's ass didn't even try to explain, she just cried. The author made Moa a redeemable character though by having her help So it's like damn you can't even GET mad or STAY mad for too long because they're doing something BEYOND petty drama like ... I mean the betrayal is just...

And it all wrapped up like "things happened for a reason because now you truly have people you love."

.☆。• *₊°。 ✮°。

Do I recommend it? Sure! Like I said I was a good book series! Let's just go over a list of those who have strong preferences.

OW/OM Drama? Yes, ML is an incubus, and actively steps out of the harem while him and FL relationship was building. 2 other ML's had fragments of past lovers, but that's it.

Explicit Scene of cheating? Yes, very brief but descriptive.

M/M? Yes, there's no romance tho. Only had 1 sex scene. Very brief, heat of the moment, while having a 3some with FL. Just touching.

Group fun? Only one time, when everyone worshipped FL.

Angst? Yeah it's kinda Angsty, leaves you wondering. But the FL is kinda nimble so don't worry. (Meaning she gets away with a lot of things.)

HEA? Yeah, I guess you can say. It's kinda in the middle of HEA and HFN. All of the Harem is alive. The bad guy was defeated. And things are slowly changing for the better.
.☆。• *₊°。 ✮°。

Ps. The FL was right, having them all together as a whole makes somewhat of a decent BOYFRIEND. As in one person LMAO! Good luck girl cause that is not it!🚩🚩 Also Fuck Aaron and Fuck Moa! The Fl can still be friends and forgive, but I'm still here! I'll hold it down!

I really loved this book. We meet Hera and her perfectly planned life which is suddenly stripped from her when she is attacked, wakes up in an academy, and told she was a siren. She is now a 'shade' or person with paranormal abilities. Those people are kept in academies which are more like prisons. We also meet the five males who she interacts with there, they have their own powers. This book was exciting, new, and left me wanting more when it ended. It is slightly steamy but I know there's more to come in the next book. Can't wait!

When will book two be out on audio!! Absolutely loved this. Not your normal academy romance story.
Your paranormal folk are at disadvantage in this world. academies aren’t school, they are prisons and a way that the government can do experiments on paranormal people under the noses of the public.
While listing them as dangerous to them.
Fabulous story…

Oh my days

I almost dropped my kindle twice falling asleep. This is a slow burn RH that is also a slow burn plot. The only thing that sped it up were the heroines plans that just scream TSTL. I kept reading thinking okay maybe we are getting somewhere, yep the somewhere was another corridor or room.

I want my time back.

Another amazing book by Jayce Carter! I've read a few of her series, the Nemesis & Dark Sanctuary are both amazing, so I was excited to start reading this series.

Silenced is about Hera, the daughter of Senator, she's a rich, spoiled brat. Her entire life is planned out, Hera is set to marry Aaron, according to Hera, everything is right in her world. But her world isn't just of regular humans, there is also ones with paranormal abilities. These are known as shades, they're detained in "academies", and treated with fear and disgust. Hera is kept in the dark with so many things that she doesn't realize that her mom is responsible for the shades being at these "academies"

After an accident Hera is attacked by two men, she loses her voice and discovers that she is a shade, she's a Siren. When she wakes up after the attack, she's not at home, she's at her new home, Larkwood Academy. This isn't the only thing that's bad, she is not liked at all, it's known at the academy as the daughter of the woman who keeps all the shades there. On top of that she has no voice with the scar showing that she's been silenced.

You're drawn into this book, even though I didn't initially like Hera due to her spoiled ways, I like how Jayce turned the tides. You slowly learn that she's not just a spoiled rich kid, and you also learn about this world. The variety of shades is extensive and I'm excited to see what other types we learn about in the future books.

I'm also interested to see how the relationships develop with her possible harem. Deacon, a human, but not so human guard, Kit is a shade who's a teacher, both of these men treat her better than the other people at the academy do. The twins Knox and Brad, and Wade who all have been at the academy for many years. These men are equally as drawn to Hera as she is to them.

There's so much more and it's a great ride in this world. I'm so excited for book 2, I've never seen this angle before in my pnr reading. And this makes It perfectly unique!.

I greatly enjoyed Silenced and I am very much wanting to read the rest of the series. I loved reading this book and found it to be a unique story.

Hera’s life is pretty perfect, she is the daughter of a Senator and has everything she could ever want, until she is attacked by two men and her world is flipped upside down. When Hera wakes up after the attack, she finds herself in Larkwood Academy, the place where Shades go, but Hera wasn’t a shade, she was human!

Hera learns that she is in fact a Siren and was silenced during her attack, which is now a scar from one of her attackers cutting her throat and silencing her voice.

As Hera learns what her life will be like at Larkwood Academy, a prison more so than a real home and the other shades in the Academy hate Hera because of her mother and all she has done to put Shades away so they cannot harm any humans in the public.

Hera was an interesting lead character and though she couldn’t speak, she could still access powers of the Siren that weren’t a voice. Hera meets Deacon, a human guard at Larkwood Academy who is not entirely human, but is not a shade. She meets Kit, a shade who is also a teacher within the walls of the Academy and the first person aside from Deacon who treats her better than the others do. Wade is a young shade who has been in Larkwood for many years along with Knox and Brad, twins who are also shades. These men are all drawn to Hera and she in turn to them, even while she still believes she will be taken home by her parents once they find out where she is.

The author has what appears to be quite the list of “shades” that are in this book and I am very curious to see if we can meet more shades and their intriguing different species. I loved the story and I really am looking forward to reading the rest of the books in the Larkwood Academy series.

I did find some areas that needed a bit more editing, but it did not take away from the story and I stand by my rating and am excited for more.

I liked the premise of this series, I think it has a lot of potential and I was hooked.

I wasn’t a fan of the constant mentality of the shades being infected and being monsters but because of this I think the plot and the development of the world can be really meaningful and something worth working towards.

Honestly I hated Hera at the beginning because she was clearly one of the fools who to believes what she’s been told and not willing to form her own opinion until it was affecting her directly.

Yes she changed she grew but I’m still waiting to see if she becomes a badass worthy of being a really good FMC. Her constant belief that she’s going to go back to her old life was not only naive but it started to get annoying, I hope she gets the reality check she needs to become the version of herself she need to be.

I liked the MMC’a they are all different, easy to differentiate and with their own personalities, there’s Wade the void that’s laughter and jokes but clearly depressed and touch deprived, Knox the incubus with clear shame and guilt over his abilities, Brax his berserker twin with obvious anger and control issues, Kit a wendigo that Hera isn’t sure if she wants to be her friend or be afraid of and Deacon the guard with a lot of trauma and fear of things changing.

I was hoping to see more magic and was disappointed when the use of it and mention of her abilities or others was glossed over.

I’m excited to see how they will escape and how everything is going to change. I’m waiting to see the harem develop and for each of them to grow and accept themselves.
Im also really hoping she gets back her voice or at least she learns how to control more her powers.

It’s also worth mentioning that this was pretty slow going, slow burn, repetitive and without a lot of development which at times became boring. I’m hoping the next books are more easy going and entertaining because I think this really has a lot of potential.

📖 My Thoughts

the blurb is very interesting and is what caught my eye. however the actual story did not seem to line up with the dream that was meant to be laid out for us. While the premise is great, it wasn’t as well written as you’d expect.

the relationships are all over the place, I’m supposed to believe there is something there but it’s not written in a way that shows and we are just meant to believe it’s there. there is so much hot and cold that you can’t even tell what I real. there’s a lot thrown at you and you’re just expected to go with it.

and for everyone who said this was a bullying story? where was the bullying? because I couple glares and rude comments is not bullying. let’s do better people.

not to forget, there is a ton of unnecessary drama in this book that doesn’t advanced the plot at all. It’s like all the drama was just made up for fun and the joke was on us

⚠️ Triggers

assault, death, drugging, mental health shit

🏳️‍🌈 Representation

there’s an incubus and I think it’s pan

🌶️ Spice

there was some but I was so bored I couldn’t even wake my imaginary dick up for it.

I obviously won’t be reading the next book. i had high hopes for the mute fmc but I’d rather read phone numbers in the yellow pages.

I’ve never read anything from Jayce Carter before but writing in this book is wonderful, I will definitely be looking into more from this author. I was drawn in from the start even though I normally dread beginnings to books. They’re always just information dumps and tend to be boring especially because you don’t care about anyone yet.

I won’t lie, each character didn’t have distinct ways of talking or anything that told them apart outside of Brax being grumpy, Knox being self loathing, Wade being your typical happy go lucky, Kit being mysterious and Deacon being a combination of all of the above. However, this doesn’t take away from the fact that I want to know more about them, somehow this works. You actually don’t run into too many other characters in this and when you do, they’re not in it too long. They’re normally unnamed people and those that are given a name, I’m hoping it’s because they’ll show up again later on. With mentions of the Warden repeatedly coming up, you can’t NOT want to know more.

This books has a lot of mystery surrounding everything that’s going on and I’m excited to see where this goes.

The writing draws me in and makes me want to stick around but the story makes it all worthwhile.

It’s been a long time since a book held my attention ruin from the first few pages, this one did just that. This author is new to me and I’m glad I took a chance to read it.

This book is about Hera, the daughter of a
Senator and pharma exec. She’s rich and spoiled, and has her whole life planned out and is set to marry Aaron. In her world humans are with paranormal abilities were known as shade and treated with fear and disdain and detained in ‘academies’. Hera is quite ignorant to their reality especially as her mum is responsible for the shades.

During a fluke accident, Hera is attacked, loses her voice and discovers that she herself is a shade ie a siren. She is sent to Larkside academy. The author has captured Hera’s despair so well in finding out she is a mute and has to adapt to her environment. Hera’s character development is fascinating to read. At the academy she is drawn to Deacon, a jaded guard, Kit one of her professors and twins Knox (succubus) and Brax (berserkers). Each of the men play a part in making her a stronger character, they all have their own story to tell.

The world building is fantastic, love the slow burn aspect of this book too. Fits the story well. Can’t wait for book 2.

Well this just reminded me of why I hate reading recent books—I hate waiting for the next installment! This was such a good start to the series; I pretty much love every character, including the FMC who on paper, may seem unlikeable.

She comes from privilege and is incredibly naive about how the world works, but she's thankfully not a snob and she has some nice growth in this book. I love that so far, she's a pretty reasonable character and I was pretty sympathetic for her the whole time.

Now the men are also great; there's an enemies to lovers vibe with one of the MMCs while his brother is a sweetheart but reluctant to love. One of the MMCs is also a virgin. They're all unique and the author did a great job with their characterization; we also get a good chunk of character growth for each of them here too.

Honestly, I'm just so excited for the next book. The plot was interesting, the pacing was good, the characters were great, and I really want to see how they continue to grow as a RH and escape the prison. This does technically end on a cliffhanger since this is the first book of the series, but it's not a major one at all; it wraps up the main things that happen in this book so there's resolution for the immediate plot, and then it just hints at what is next to come.

So, what happened to my second reverse harem? Yes, I ended up devouring this in less than a day.

I'm not going to lie, I'm always skeptical of school-set paranormal/ fantasy novels, but this one is just so good.

Aside from the compelling writing, I liked how the novel kept me wanting more and knowing more about what's going on behind or outside the academy's doors and in every lurking place that Hera has yet to uncover.

Although I admit that the exploration of the male leads' characters was a little too brief, I still enjoyed them, as well as our female lead's development, which, to be honest, sometimes had me rolling my eyes, but I enjoyed her character- their character.

I would also say that the romance felt a little dry, even though it didn't feel rushed at times and didn't get the right development with some of the leads.

What I'm more interested in is the plot and the whole project going on, which I'm sure has something to do with Hera; I just want to know more about the whole experimentation thing tbh.

Overall, this was a good one; to be honest, I liked the plot more than the characters. I can't wait for the sequel.

This is not my first book from this author, but I am definitely loving this story. I cannot wait to read what happens next with the main characters, whom I am loving by the way. Hera, started off as a bit of a weak character but I'm loving how she's coming into her own and showing her strengths. Deacon, Wade, Kit, Brax and Knox have been in the academy longer than Hera and they already know their limits and what they can and cannot do. They all have their own positions in the academy, and I love how all of them are different. I'm enjoying how they are opening up to her in their own way and in their own time. I'm definitely loving Knox and Wade a little more. Not only is this story steamy but it also has a bit of suspense. I have a feeling that something bad will happen in the next book, but it's a matter of waiting to see if I'm right and how things will play out. I devoured this book in one sitting and I honestly can't wait to get the rest of the story. I hope it releases soon and I will definitely be recommending this story to my paranormal romance book loving friends. It did not disappoint.

Hera is the daughter of affluent parents and she has been promised in marriage to their friend’s son. She is attacked at night and becomes a Shade, a nonhuman, more specifically a Siren. This is when her body converts for the first time and as she sings, she is killing her attackers. One of them slits her throat and also her vocal cords and she is silenced. She awakens in Lakewood Academy which is a fancy name for a prison for Shades. Her family no longer wants her and told her so would no longer be welcomed back. Unable to speak, she uses sign language and writing on a pad. She is now with dangerous, ruthless, and merciless Shades. The only friends she has met are a male incubus, beserker, wendigo, void, and nonhuman guard. She’s planning an escape and wants to go to the North Tower, but no one returns from there. This is a different and interesting story with excellent world building and definitely well developed characters. Can’t wait for book two! Excellent read!.

Four stars—- It was a good read, and I really enjoyed the whole mystery of “what’s happening in that tower” plot. There were some errors in the story, but it wasn’t a big deal… however what was a big deal and kept me asking myself if I should continue the story, was how dumb the FMC was. She was all over the place and couldn’t make up her mind. She went from not really caring for her Boyfriend in the beginning, to missing him because she was taken away, to making out with someone else while still thinking she was in a relationship; even after he said they couldn’t be together anymore… then she kept trying to get with all the other guys, literally one after the other (even tho most of them declined her at first) AND THEN she gets mad at one of the men because she caught him with some other guy, even tho a few chapters earlier she said that SHE can be with whoever she wants since she doesn’t owe them anything or smth like that. Besides the whole thing with the FMC not being the smartest, I still enjoyed the book for the most part.

Silenced was a knockout start to The Larkwood Academy series. Shades in this book are a class of Supernaturals of all types that are pretty much outcasts to be scared of and reviled by all humans.

Hera's (FMC) perfect. sheltered life is changed for good when a brutal event happens to her and shes changed into a shade herself. As well as losing the ability to talk too. Only then she finds herself ostracized from her family and friends and sent to Larkwood Academy. A school thats so far removed from being one as you can get. With dark and sinister things happening there. I loved the different characters she meets there - Wade, Kit, Deacon, Know and Brax who all have engaging backstories. Sadly the majority of which are not happy ones. It seems in that way like attracts like and all the guys seem to gravitate to Hera.

This book was a great start and completely drew me in. Im looking forward to the rest of the series now

Let me start by saying I'm a huge Jayce Carter fan. She's an excellent author as well as being an amazing human being. I am always skewed in her favor because she's my friend, but my opinion on her writing is, I hope, not too influenced by that!

I was blessed to receive an ARC of Silenced, and I devoured it. The setting and characters and plot are excellent. I loved the various relationships and they way all the characters interacted. The story itself is driving and has great tension.

My only gripe is it felt like there were some scenes missing between characters that explained how they got from point A to point B. Which I understand was extremely hard with the fact that there are so many characters to introduce and do characterization for in this book! I am seriously looking forward to other books in the series.

Ironically lost the meat of the story the more the main character chased after man meat.
Too many cocks in the kitchen, you know?
It’s a harem, yes, but the woman isn’t normally forming her sex squad by throwing herself at every willing male body until she pegs one like a damn ring toss.

At least the beginning is well done and quickly creates a character that we like enough for the ensuing events to be heartbreaking in their irony, but something shifts enough to make her choices from there on become a bit tacky.

‘Still’ is used 202 times in this, and I’d bet anything that over 90% of them begin her sentences.
‘Still, I blah blah blah.’
‘Still, it blah blah blah.’
Over and over and over again, which really only inflamed my impatience.

Still, (heh) my hopes might be misplaced, but they’re enough to attempt the next one.

The book was pretty great as paranormal academy books go. There was some chafing with the way certain characters were shown at first and it definitely showed the jerk side of humanity. There was a decent mix of charm, suspense, heroics, and drama; so this would be a perfect YA recommendation.

I liked how the author blurred the lines between academia and imprisonment, tossed in the eclectic mix of monsters from all different cultures, and presented a fairly good bit of character development for one or two of my favorite people.

Overall, without giving anything away, this is definitely a book worth picking up. It was easy to get lost in and I found myself finished before I even realized. It was just that good.

Tropes: Reverse Harem, Enemies to Lovers, Bully Romance, Forced imprisonment, academy romance, prison romance, Survival romance
Possible Triggers: Abandonment, hate, holocaust-like plot.

Hera starts off as a slightly spoiled, closed minded young woman because of her parents, how she was raised and her position in society. Everything changes for her, everything. She goes through multiple traumatic experiences, including her family and friends actions and reactions.
We get quite a bit of world building as this is the first book in a new series, but Hera’s world is also very small so it’s kind of limited. The men she meets are all very different and who can really be trusted at Larkwood? There are so many secrets that need to be discovered in book 2 and hopefully everyone comes together to help each other and be a team. Wade and Deacon are probably my favorites if I had to pick.
