I was apprehensive about continuing this series, considering I thought the prequel was ok and book 1 was only “good”. Michael Stackpole has done some tremendous work with fantasy standalones, but he had yet to wow me with a fantasy series.
This book proves he can write a good series too! This book is a significant step up from the first.
The best part of this book is its balance of POV characters. We jump around constantly with about half a dozen characters, focusing on the POVs of Alexia, Will, and Kerrington. All of them were interesting and had exciting adventures to follow. For the first part of the book they’re largely together, but later in the book they split up. Stackpole intercuts these stories, as well as the minor character and villain POVs very well.
The Wheel of Time influence is clear here, especially in the way that Stackpole writes the politics in the beginning and the villains Isaura, Navval, and Neskartu. I love the way that the book has these similarities, yet Stackpole’s style is also unique.
The whole ‘marriage’ and ‘trial’ at the beginning of this book were just so excellently done. Stackpole kept me on the edge of my seat to find out how he’d resolve them.
The second half of the book is much more action heavy, and that’s not necessarily my favorite. That being said, it was very competently done, and I really enjoyed the ending and the cliffhanger. It has me very excited for the final book.
Overall, I’ll give this one a 9 out of 10! Well done Michael A Stackpole.
