I had high hopes for this book but I found it really hard to get through and not ultimately very helpful. Another reviewer noted: "The second thing that caught my attention is how branded everything feels... She points to the work of well-known researchers — Brené Brown’s work on shame and perfectionism; Kristin Neff’s on self-compassion — and then repackages it, staples it together, and slaps a bunch of Capitalized Titles on it. I found this somewhat of a turnoff; at several points in the book I felt like I was being advertised something, or sitting in on a multi-level marketing seminar."

That's exactly how I felt, like I was reading some sort of incredibly long infomercial. None of the concepts struck me as particularly novel at all, and it turns out I do most of what she preaches anyway. I had the feeling halfway through that one page might have helpful tips for me to get working on my writing again, but I was so bored by the book that I didn't bother to make notes or anything. For the most part, it just seemed like she was trying desperately to sell me something and that the whole thing could have been summed up in a blog post.

I suspect that it could be quite useful for younger readers and those who are really struggling with issues of perfectionism, comparison, etc. and who are not familiar with the authors she pulled from, though. If you like diagrams and lots of back story, you're likely to enjoy it.

The first thing I noticed about The Feel Good Effect is that the physical object of the book is extremely nice. The paper is heavyweight and high quality (so much so that I think it artificially inflates the length of the book, which clocks in at just 147 pages; I read it in an evening). The font feels crisp and delicious, somehow. The whole package just feels good (sorry) in my hands.

The second thing that caught my attention is how branded everything feels. Conley Downs, described elsewhere as “a rising star in the wellness space,” talks about how, having reached a crisis point in her personal life, she threw herself into copious amounts of research on “how the brain works, behavior change, habits, mindset, routines, goal setting, [and] mindfulness.” She points to the work of well-known researchers — Brené Brown’s work on shame and perfectionism; Kristin Neff’s on self-compassion — and then repackages it, staples it together, and slaps a bunch of Capitalized Titles on it. I found this somewhat of a turnoff; at several points in the book I felt like I was being advertised something, or sitting in on a multi-level marketing seminar. (To add to this effect, the author seeded hints to visit the book website throughout the text. In fact, you must visit this site if you want to see the book’s bibliography.)

That said, the general message of the book is one that aligns with my personal sensibilities regarding “wellness”, setting goals, and making needed changes; it presents “an alternative to striving” — a kind of upward spiral that is holistic, gentle, sustainable, and kind. The Feel Good Effect continues a trend that (for me) seemed to explode into the collective self-help consciousness with the rise of Marie Kondo: that of identifying and working with one’s core personal values, sometimes in unexpected areas of our lives. This shift in thinking has proven helpful to me, and I’m glad to see it encouraged here.

Conley Downs also has several suggestions for dealing with decision paralysis, extremist all-or-nothing thinking, self-abasement, and lack of motivation. The end of each chapter includes a few simple exercises that you can practice over time until they become automatic; I particularly like the “Third Way” practice (“Use this practice when faced with a situation in which there seems to be only two options. The trigger for this practice is if you notice yourself thinking, ‘It has to be this or that.’ For example, ‘I have to finish this entire project, or just give up on it,’ or ‘I have to give up my dreams or quit my job,’ or ‘I have to train for a marathon or stop running.’ When you notice this happening, write down the two options on a piece of paper. Ask yourself, ‘Are these really the only two options? Is there a third way?’ Challenge yourself to write down as many alternative options as you can”) and the “Goal Flip” exercise, wherein you practice reverse-engineering a results-oriented goal to transform it to one that is process-oriented.

I do not like that the principles in this book are described as “a program” and I do not like that the author also encourages some “accountability” practices (such as “team[ing] up with a friend, family member, or coworker to do the challenge together, increasing your accountability”) — both of those words, to me, scream “strive some more” — but I don’t think the ideas themselves are bad. Example: although I am allergic to “accountability partners” for grew-up-in-a-cult reasons, I also currently have an agreement with a friend to ask each other about our NaNoWriMo progress each day this month. I think that planning to try something new with a friend and periodically checking in to see how it’s going can be fun and effective; I just prefer to leave the word “accountability” out of it, as it seems to add a layer of moral weight to whatever we’re doing.

Ultimately, I’m not convinced The Feel Good Effect contains a new system. It is a decent, if somewhat fluffy, introduction to some solid self-care practices that synthesizes some very useful research. I think it’s worth a read for anyone feeling exhausted by the endless, often contradictory “wellness” options available these days, or for anyone interested in thinking about health and happiness through the lenses of systems theory and personal values. While I don’t know if this book will become a permanent part of my personal library, I would like to experiment over time with some of the exercises I’m not already doing, so I’m going to hang onto my copy for now as a reference.

This is the book I have been waiting for - a self-help book based on science with actionable steps - and I loved it.
I have been following Robyn's blog and listening to her podcast for a number of years and have enjoyed watching the evolution of her strength and messages. I am also a scientist and I really appreciated the tone of her writing and her detailed explanations. I struggle with a lot of the topics in this book, especially the "all or nothing thinking" and I can't wait to get started with some of her strategies. I highly recommend this book!

My main takeaway from this book is the author's explanation of how the striving mindset - one's tendency towards perfectionism, all-or-nothing thinking, and toxic comparison - is a habit of the mind that can prevent you from making sustainable changes, reaching your goals, and ultimately being healthy and happy. The good news is that by making tiny mindset shifts, you can replace this counter-productive way of thinking with Conley Downs' "feel good mindset," which includes the practice of self-compassion, the power middle, and gratitude. Her perspective and ideas have been extremely helpful to me. For instance, when I notice myself slipping into that familiar striving mindset, where I beat myself on the head for missing a workout or not achieving a specific goal, I remind myself to practice self-kindness and remain flexible in my thinking. With this in mind, I'm more likely to stick to my goals and resume where I left off than I am to give up altogether. The beauty and power of this approach is that you can always find your own personal happy middle ground simply by changing the way you think; and therein lies the key to being healthy and happy. I get to define wellness on my own terms rather than trying to live up to some perceived objective ideal. I definitely recommend and will be gifting it to my girlfriends!

I was given an advanced read of this book and asked to provide an honest review.....

I wanted to love this book and be able to tell everyone I know to buy it. Unfortunately I didn't love it and probably won't be recommending it. I have read a lot of books on habits and mindset and the other books just have more to offer.

The things I liked...
- The introduction was great and made me want to race through the book. Robyn actually has degrees and has studied what she's about to write about, that is always a good thing in my opinion.
- The book looks beautiful.

Things I didn't like....
- The GOOD method is just a repackaging of what every other book on habits says (The Power of Habit, Tiny Habits, Atomic Habits) without the detail. Where I thought Robyn was vulnerable in the introduction, she pulled back when describing the GOOD method and made it very clinical
- No references at the end. Maybe if Robyn acknowledged that her work built upon others, I might have been more accepting of the GOOD method.
- I would have appreciated more detail on how Robyn (and maybe other people who contributed to her research) used the method she describes. I need data to convince me to change what I'm doing.

I currently have no plans to buy a physical copy of this book after reading, it wasn't written for me.

It liked the personal story and how she changed her mindset, but the rest of the book was just a repeat of every other self help book that includes a section about habits. It's a short book but is also fairly repetitive. It seems like it could have been reduced to a leaflet or a short power point presentation. It wasn't a bad book, and I did enjoy the first 1/4 of it.

3.5 Lovely book, I would have benefited from this A LOT when I was 21. At this stage I appreciated her gentle tone and reminders of how to set realistic goals and set habits in motion to make it happen.

This book is an amazing resource for anyone who wants to shift their focus from lofty, unachievable wellness goals and the mindset of “I’ll be happy once I [fill in the blank]” to a clear and simple focus on crafting habits that will help you to feel good RIGHT NOW, no gatekeeping or overhauls required.

Robyn does an incredible job at breaking down all of the common cognitive challenges/distortions that keep us stuck not just in wellness or health habits, but in every area of life. She also goes further than that and provides simple tactical exercises and tips to help people clarify their vision of what feeling good really means to them beyond weight loss or an hour long morning routine. These exercises provide a road map for people add simple daily practices into their lives that will help them feel good, more often.

I think that this book will be a game changer for people who are tired of the “just be more disciplined”, “no pain no gain”, blame and shame approach to health and wellness that is so tired and just does not work. Robyn’s book reads as a manual for how to throw the “just try harder” rule book in the trash and practice radical self acceptance, self care, and self compassion instead, plain and simple.

My only small critique of this book is that I wish that she had taken a stronger stance against intentional weight loss and dieting. Although nutrition and weight loss are the very first things that most people think about when it comes to health and wellness, just like all of the other parts of toxic wellness/diet culture, they’re built on a “just try harder” foundation that doesn’t work, and even worse, can cause a ton of damage to people’s mental health and relationships to food. I understand that this can be a tricky topic especially in the health and wellness sphere, and there may simply not have been the space to cover it appropriately, but it feels like such a natural extension of the rest of the messaging in the book that it would have been awesome if it had been covered a bit. Other than this small complaint, I think that this book will be an amazing resource and a total game changer for anyone who reads it. As a long-time follower and fan of Robyn’s, I am so proud and excited for her for creating this amazing resource!

Robyn Conley Downs, creator of The Feel Good Effect podcast, has written this book as an extension of her podcast conversations. Longtime listeners will recognize some of the concepts, but new followers, and people who just prefer the written word, will appreciate the way Robyn lays out these “feel good” concepts. More than diet and exercise, Robyn discusses mindset and whole person health. She provides personal anecdotes, snippets of others’ stories, and science-backed research to prove that wellness is more than the quick fixes advertised in today’s health landscape. With illustrated charts and exercises at the end of chapters, readers gain tactical knowledge to implement these things into their lives. Robyn’s writing is like a conversation with a friend who genuinely cares about your well-being. This book is recommended for readers who want a new, gentle way to feel good.

WOW! During this quarantine I have used this time to work on myself and truly focus on me. This work is not easy by any means. I had finally gotten to a good place mentally but still felt flustered. I would make plans the night before for the next day and just wake up in a fog. I would sit around for hours until it was the end of the day, had nothing accomplished, then would have to rush around to get everything done. Since reading this book, it has honestly put EVERYTHING into perspective. From not trying to be “It” all, whatever “it” is. Understanding what YOU truly want is more important than anything. I’m so blessed to have come across Robyn on IG and just so happen to jump into her ambassadorship program for this book. I ordered a copy before I even knew about this. I will definitely be reading this again and making ALL KINDS OF NOTES when I get my hard copy. I can’t wait!! Robyn, I’m so proud of you! Thank you for writing something that we didn’t quite know we needed.

The Feel Good Effect is a framework that combines mindset shifts and habit shifts to implement in your daily life that help create a sustainable, healthy lifestyle. Downs shares her personal journey to how she came to live a life free of the constant hustle and bustle, burnout, unrealistic expectations, striving and comparison. As a busy mom of four, I can relate completely to what she shared in the introduction about the start-slide-stop and desiring more peace and less chaos and exhaustion in the day to day. I want to be able to have tools to help me live a more peaceful, living in the moment kind of life and not constantly thinking of my to dos and what's next. Downs shares the steps to take to create small shifts that bring about big changes, so we are able to make time to stop and enjoy the here and now. I highly recommend this book and have it to be completely life giving. I will be referring back to this book often and implementing what I've learned.

Listened to the audiobook of this on Apple Books. Audible has a feature that allows you to “bookmark” or highlights clips. But, Apple audiobooks does not have the same feature. So, I had to order the hard copy of the book as there were sections of the book that provided steps for journaling, make lists, Venn Diagram style visuals for an individual to see the steps/processes necessary to find better habits, actualize the aspects of personal life that allow a person to feel good, and make the small changes that can a provide a better path for more sustained contentment. The author has an online social media presence and podcast that I was unaware of before listening to the book, so most of her content in the book was probably available for free on her other platforms. Enjoyed the message and calm demeanor of the author, nonetheless.

She had me at ‘Small shifts = Big change’!!
I couldn’t put this book down! That surprised me really. But I was hooked!
In The Feel Good Effect, author Robin Conley Downs presents a very doable, neuroscience-backed approach to achieving what you want for your life.
While the science is fascinating, and helped me understand & make sense of it all, the game changers are the simple practices I can easily incorporate into my day, that are making the difference.
Already, I am experiencing a greater peace of mind, as I go about the day, that these small shifts are getting me to the life I want for myself.
This is the book I will be gifting to my friends who are ready to get off the crazy-train of life we end up on by default so many times!

highly recommend this book for anyone who is trying to live a more satisfying life. This book is beautifully broken down into each to graph concepts and fun to follow practices. I appreciate that Robyn uses research and practical guidance. I have lived with a striving mindset since I was a teenager and Robyn has given me the tools to see what areas in my life I'm really succeeding it and how to make practical changes that actually fit my life. I really enjoyed reading through each chapter and the book has the perfect amount of information to give you the tools to understand yourself better and what you can do going forwards. What I truly love about Robyn's approach is its about small changes, that take into account my life and what really matters for me.

Robyn Conley Downs has written a phenomenal book about how mindset matters. I have followed Robyn's Podcast for quite some time now, and value her thought process with regards to self compassion and being gentle with ourselves.

Her book The Feel Good Effect has helped me understand the best way to stop living my life with unrealistic expectations and shift towards living my life with grace and kindness. This book teaches you how to take action in your life right here and now... We have it within ourselves to make subtle tweaks in our behavior and mindset and these book teaches you how to do it.

Thanks to Robyn, I strongly believe I now have the tools I need to live my best life and feel darn good doing it. I can't wait to buy more copies of The Feel Good Effect book to give to my mom, sister and girlfriends. Robyn, it was worth the wait for this Goodread!

This book is a breath of fresh air. I began following Robyn on Instagram, @realfoodwholelife, around two years ago. I remember having an "aha" moment when I first saw her share the mantra "gentle is the new perfect". This book was full of so many more "aha" moments. Robyn not only breaks down the science behind "the feel good effect" to be completely digestible, but she consistently provides activities and practices that articulate how exactly you can implement the given tools and skills into your own life. This book shows that wellness can be accessible and doable, rather than intimidating and overwhelming. As a perfectionist trying to pursue an ambitious post-grad, my mental health is so grateful for this book. Moral of the story, you need this book in your life.

This book is a game changer for the health and wellness industry! Unlike most methods, 30-day cleanses, etc. this is a realistic approach to real, sustainable long-term wellness. What makes this book so different is that Robyn starts by explaining the mindset that blocks us from being consistently healthy (in the real sense of the word!) and once you understand how your thought process, not your actions, is at the basis of it all it changes EVERYTHING! After this, she takes you through to how to change these mindsets by doing small shifts and counteracting the previously negative thought patterns we have with movement and food. This book is about long term changes, self-acceptance, enjoying the process and showing that self-compassion is NOT being lazy. Backed up with research, I feel I can now enter a lifelong journey and relationship with wellness that is ACTUALLY healthy!

I have been following Robyn Conley Down's work on social media and online for about three years now and I am always inspired and comforted by her focus on "gentle is the new perfect" and that we can make small changes that can impact our lives in big ways. I regularly share episodes of her podcast with others and have already ordered copies of this book to be sent to my daughter, sisters in law, and friends. So many of us need the reminders that Robyn shares- we are enough, we are doing enough, and we can find healthy ways to take care of ourselves. I am excited to have so many of Robyn's doable ideas in one place to make it even easier to share with others! Thanks for writing this book.

Order a copy of this fantastic life changing book now! I have been following Robyn @realfoodwholelife for years. Her relatable science backed approach to wellness has changed my life. I,like Robyn found myself in the middle of a breakdown. I was exhausted as a stay at home Mom with three children wondering what happened to my career and the joy in my life. I went searching for help and found Robyn Conley Downs. Robyn's recipes and wellness tips helped me get my life back on track and brought me to where I am today working on my Master's degree. Small shifts in mindset can lead to big changes in life. Start where you are and invest in The Feel Good Effect.

A few years ago I began listening to podcasts and found the Feel Good Effect. It quickly became one of my favorites and still is today. I was so excited when I found out Robyn was writing a book. I was quick to pre-order it and excited to join her ambassador team. 

The book was everything I knew it would be and so much more!! She covers several actionable routines that are easily incorporated into daily life and have a huge impact on health and well-being..

Many of the concepts in her book are discussed on her podcast but there are also lots of new ones. Even though I am familiar with a lot of her concepts, seeing it all written out and in more detail makes these concepts so much more clear and actionable.

Robyn is always real, vulnerable, and encouraging and that definitely translates in her book. Her work is fresh, helpful and I resonate so well with her ideas.

This book has the tools to profoundly change your life! It is an honest friend, a caring mentor, and the get-it-done relative that we all love.. If you’ve felt exhausted by internal or external expectations, and what you want to feel is GOOD, Robyn shares the mindset and method to design the life that works for YOU. She uses frameworks and research-based strategies to clear away the noise and help you identify what feeling good means. She doesn’t tell you what to do, she shows you how to find what will work for you, because what feels good is unique to each person. I want to give a copy of this book to every woman in my life so we can all stop striving and start living in a way that serves us best.

The Feel Good Effect is a voice of reason in the often chaotic and overwhelming wellness world. Research backed, yet completely approachable, this book is both practical and inspiring. Robyn brings the same sense of calm, level-headed thinking and explanations to this gem of a book as she does in her amazing podcast. Each page is jam-packed with actionable tips, step-by-step mindset exercises, and encouragement along the way. I'm so excited to put this book into practice and The Feel Good Effect in my own life!

The Feel Good Effect is a practical guide to create a life that is meaningful and feels good! In this book, Robyn Conley Downs, provides frameworks for building positive routines, reworking your mindset, and making small shifts that will have a big impact on your life. The book includes many actionable tips and practices that make it easy to implement Robyn's advice and guidance. The Feel Good Effect is beautifully written, and I will turn to it again and again to review the practices and remind myself of Robyn's guidelines for living a life that feels good! I cannot recommend this book enough - you definitely need to read it and then share it with a friend!

“The Feel Good Effect” by Robyn Conley Downs is a how-to manual for enhancing your health and wellness. I subscribe to her podcast of the same name, and was excited to have Robyn’s simplified wellness advice in book form. Robyn’s approach is doable - she advocates for small changes that, over time, combine to make a big impact. “The Feel Good Effect” is a collection of customizable, science-based behavior shifts and habit changers that helped me develop a mindset of grace over perfection.

I absolutely loved The Feel Good Effect! I strongly believe this book is for everyone as it has so many good actionable tools! I love not only the researched-based information about things such as habits, routines and goal-setting, but the way Robyn gives you simple, actionable tools to implement them and succeed! I know I will refer back to this book over and over and use so many of the tools to make small shifts that lead to big changes in my life. Thank you Robyn for sharing your wisdom, love and authenticity with the world!

The Feel Good Effect explores wellness and being healthy in a way everyone can understand and embrace. The author communicates clearly and directly. I was familiar with many of her concepts, and found the details included in the book so helpful. I especially liked the exercises which are designed to personalize and optimize the Feel Good Effect techniques. They are quick and effective. This is one of my all time favorite non-fiction books. It will be a reference I refer to regularly.

I've been following Robyn's work since the start, and this is such a beautiful next step in sharing her incredible message. The book is fantastic! The shift to simplifying wellness and focusing on the foundation of our mindset is phenomenal! Well done Robyn - you're going to create big change in so many lives!

The Feel Good Effect is a wonderfully written book with realistic tools for making lasting, positive change in your life. Robyn Conley Downs gives a refreshing perspective in the wellness space that feels achievable without being punitive. The framework on how to shift your mindset really resonated with me as it is something I struggle with. The steps are realistic and give the reader permission to be human and remind the reader that it takes time to make real change. Great book!

I was fortunate enough to be able to preread this book digitally and I'm so excited to be able to get a physical copy in hand soon! I have loved listening to Robyn's Feel Good Effect podcast the last years and this continues to support her message of what wellness could be for all of us. Give it a read, what do you really have to lose? Be part of the Feel Good Movement!
