The Rites of Passage #1

Ashes To Ashes: The Rites of Passage Series

Rate this book
I believed it all once, the fairytale, that is. When I was a teenager, I was like you, you poor naive thing. Stick around, and I'll show you how to become a better version of yourself. The villain. It's the villain that has all the fun. Corruption, lies, and anarchy are a minefield of excitement! Boom, boom, baby! You see, I was the commoner who fell for the handsome king. He promised me a future by his side and handed me a red rose, but the thorns cut me deep when I took it. The fantasy shattered, and the king killed everything in my world, including me...or so he thought. I became a ghost dragged deep into the underworld that my uncle controlled. No longer human but now a pawn, a possession. For years I suffered the games until one day, my soul slipped free from hell and came back to wander the earth. The thing about ghosts is they are not truly dead. They are left to linger and, most notably, to haunt. I would flip the roles and seduce the king this time. I'd take his kingdom, his power, and control. I'd crush him into ashes beneath my Prada boots. Ashes to ashes, they will all fall down because I'm the plague baby, and I'm going to leave nothing but dust in my trail.

I believe this was a debut so that heavily impacts my overall review. I try to be more lenient. This book had an interesting concept and for the most part I enjoyed it. However there were some concerning issues that made me feel uncomfortable. First, OCD is referenced a bunch but it doesn’t feel like it’s been given the respect to how debilitating it can be. It’s mostly referenced to her swiping her lipgloss four times or making sure her shoes are perfectly aligned in her closet. There’s also a scene where the FMC asks if her roommate as a stutter (because the roomie stuttered out a question because she was afraid of the FMC) and then proceeds to mock stutters. There were also so many incorrect words used - however because they weren’t (for the most part) spelled incorrectly, they may not have picked up on it during editing and editing can cost a lot up front so I understand it’s not always feasible for a debut author. Anyways, this was a decent debut (though it has its faults for sure) and I may read book 2.

I’m loving discovering A.G. Harris as a writer because each of her books is so unique and show an incredible depth of story, a full commitment to the world building and some epically funny characters. Especially here!

Nova is such a fun character to solos - she feels wise beyond her years, yet shows her heart and naivety repeatedly, which just makes her more relatable.

I was definitely NOT finished with the characters at the end fine book - gosh so much happens it’s like you just binge-watched a new Netflix series and are panting for more! So onto the next book I fly!

This book was SO GOOD. I was seriously blown away by how much I enjoyed it. It was funny, kind of sad, and very bada**. Nova is such a hard-edged character but I found myself really loving and rooting for her. I finished this last week and still find myself thinking of Nova, her amazing taste in clothing, and the book in general. Highly recommend to everyone.

Nova and Elsa: they are one and the same but one has died (and is now Ghost) and one is now on a mission to take down the powerful King family.

Titan is literally the prince of the King family. His father is ruthless and will stop at nothing to continue to keep his empire strong and that includes training his son to be as ruthless as he is. Titan only has 2 allies, his cousin Dash and Damien, who are just as ruthless and brutal as he is. Power and knowledge is used as currency in this book and the more you have the richer you are.

Elsa (Ghost) and Titan have a shared history, one where they fell for each other but he betrayed her and her family and now she is back as Nova with a vengeance and an amazing boot collection. She is hardened and callous and out for payback. Her inner dialogue and ramblings were fun and endearing. I liked her witty reasoning and her gives off zero f*ucks attitude. She doesn't cower down to Titan or his cousins.. P.S. When are we getting Dash’s book?!?

This was past faced with no fat to trim off the story. It kept the action coming and the story flowed effortlessly. The ending was a bit of a cliffhanger and now I have to read to conclusion: Dust to Dust

I listened to the audio book and the narrator did a great job of making the characters her own and finding a different voice for each. The emotion (of lack of emotion sometimes from Nova) came through really well and added depth to the story.

Are revenge stories some of my favorites now? I think they might be!

This is a dark college romance with mafia elements. There is mystery, drama, intrigue, deception, and ultimately everyone wants money and power in this book. The female main character has dual personalities. Her name is Elsa. However, Elsa is her past. She is now Nova. Elsa is dead and buried and referred to as Ghost in her mind. Nova does talk to Ghost in her mind and a few times out loud. Nova wants revenge on her childhood crush and his whole family Titan King. The book goes back and forth between the present and the past. Titan is the prince of his family while his dad is currently the King in power. The King family is responsible for the death of Elsa and her parents and Nova will make the King's pay. Nova enrolls at a college where Titan and his 2 cousins Dash and Damian are enrolled. It appears that Nova was being played and wasn't in control at all. It seems everyone has their own moves to make and betrayal is the name of the game. Nova thought she could trick Titan but Titan ended up tricking her. Just read the book. It also covers the relationship between Dash and Nova's roomate Mila. The book ends right in the middle of a major play for power. It is a very good book. I will definitely read the 2nd book.

Although this is book one of a duet, I felt a bit lost and I kept checking to see if this was part of a interconnected series. I felt like I was missing information but I guess that’s part of the suspense of the book, feeling confused and wondering what made Nova, Nova. Also wondering who the side characters were.

I get that the author was trying to paint us a picture but at times I felt like she might have been too descriptive, that or I’m just not used to her writing style. I really couldn’t have cared less what named brand shoes and purses Nova was wearing or how hot or bad ass she looked with straight hair.

Nova was constantly having conversations with her old self, Ghost/Elsa. This story was mostly told in Nova’s pov but sometimes there were flashbacks that were told in Titan’s and Elsa’s pov and there were a few guest pov. There were even a few chapters told in Dash’s pov which definitely threw me off. But I was definitely more intrigued by Dash and Mila than Titan and Nova.

The book didn’t really grab my attention until a little more than half way through the book. But even then, with little information of the past and the few scenes Nova and Titan had together, I can’t truly say I felt their connection for one another.

What did kind of work for me was Nova’s and Mila’s “friendship”. Even if Nova befriended Mila for the wrong reasons and wasn’t the kindest person to Mila, I liked the influence Nova had on Mila.

This was an arc provided to me so I can’t say too much about some of the grammatical errors made. I just hope they were fixed before the book was published.

I have mixed feelings about this book. First off, I received a copy from the author as part of her ARC team. Even though this book is already published, I still noticed a few typos and errors Something I should overlook in an ARC draft, but they were a little hard to ignore here.
That said, I stuck with it because the plot had me hooked. I genuinely disliked the main character, especially with her awkward attempts at breaking the fourth wall, but the flashbacks of who she used to be versus who she is now kept me curious. There’s a strong mafia/secret society vibe, which is totally my thing and the main reason I needed to see how it all unfolded.
The multiple POVs made the story a bit chaotic, almost like the author was trying to stretch the narrative too far. Still, I actually liked Ghost’s POV, especially since it essentially gave us Nova’s perspective in a more grounded way.
If I ignore the errors and Nova’s cringe moments (cue evil laugh), I did enjoy the book overall. The writing isn’t quite on par with other “3-star” reads I’ve come across, but I’d compare it to the Twisted series. It’s got that same energy and fan base appeal. Even the cover design mirrors Twisted, and honestly? Not something I’d flaunt in public. I only mention that because, yes, I absolutely judge books by their covers.
I’ll be picking up the author’s second series too. Not only because I want to give her a fair shot, but also because I’m here to be an honest reviewer and support a young author on her journey. Fingers crossed for some growth in the writing!

I don’t know how I feel about this book, I felt the story was good, the characters were funny, and I was getting into the flow, however everything happened in the last chapter and it just ended! This is a series so I know there is more to come and I will be reading them but I was a little disappointed and confused by the ending.

I listened to this as an audiobook and enjoyed the narrator, she was good at differentiating between characters.

I received this audiobook as a eARC from the author for an honest review.

ARC Book Review

Title: Ashes to Ashes
Author: A.G. Harris
Genre: Dark Romance
Star Rating: ★★★★★
Smut Rating: 2/5

TW: Sex, Profanity, Abuse, and Violence

I don’t even know where to begin with this book. It was perfect! And if you know me, you know I don’t say that often.

The storyline had something familiar and yet very unique in its own way.

Ashes to Ashes is a story about revenge. We follow a broken girl in her grant scheme of revenge against the boy she once loved. The boy who betrayed and got her whole family killed.

I absolutely adore revenge stories, but they are pretty hard to execute right, which is why I was so delighted with this story. You have to incorporate the right amount of passion, hate and love for it to work.

In the words of our badass main character:

“Do you know how badly you need to love someone in order to hate them? Do you know how badly you must love that hate to go through with revenge?”

Some of these quotes killed me. This book is filled with heart-wrenching moments and the emotional turmoil that the characters go through is delicious. I ate it up like a starving woman.

I loved those internal battles that Nova had to go through.

The writing is good. It’s fast-paced, gets your attention, and never lets go. I finished it in one sitting and I am already grabbing the next one.

All the characters are amazing, but of course, the award goes to Nova our MC. Her inner battle with Ghost was a very interesting element in the plot. The multiple pov gave us a glimpse into our other characters' minds and I think it was crucial because when you have so many new characters it’s hard to make the reader connect with every one of them if you don’t offer a piece of their inner thoughts. I need more of them of course, I have so many questions that need answers. And I can’t wait to read what happens next.

I don’t even know why isn’t everyone talking about this book, they should!

That cliff hanger 😭 Don't worry your pretty heads though, I did our homework. No need to wait on Book 2, Dust to Dust, as it was released November 1, 2022.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. I was expecting more depth and wanted more development. It just felt a bit rushed but I personally like my books detailed and loaded. Other than that, this was a solid read. That twist caught me by surprise by who all was involved in it. This was a mafia romance of sorts.

Nova/Ghost is a very complex character who talks to herself mostly internally like a battle of the wills but sometimes she yells at herself vocally as well. Titan, the boy who broke her heart and killed her family, and his family are part of a mob and he is in line to inherit the "throne" upon hi father and uncles demise. Nova comes from another mob type family and has been under the care of her uncle since Elsa died. Nova escapes her uncle's watchful eye an pursues her vengeance.

As always my spice rating isn't based on how well the spice is written. It is based on the amount/occurrence, the length of scenes, and how dirty/unconventional. There was only 1 real scene and it was a step above fade to black. A very vanilla scene, so overall low on the heat scale. 2/5

“Love is painful and full of lies. I’d teach him that lesson. I’d crush his heart into ashes beneath my Prada boots. I’d take from him what he took from me.”

“Ashes to ashes, they all fall down.”

“Do you know how badly you need to love someone in order to hate them?”

Ashes to Ashes is the first book in The Rites of Passage Series. Overall the concept of the book was interesting and I liked Nova as a character. I think she is really interesting and I would love to learn more about her backstory (and hopefully in the next books there will be more about her past).

The books is told in multiple pov and in two timelines, past and present. I think that the past timeline was really important for character development.

There were some really funny moments in the book but also some heavy and sad moments.

I enjoyed the friendship between Nova & Mila and how Nova helped Mila to become stronger and more independent. I wasn’t a fan of Nova & Titan’s relationship and I didn’t really feel the connection between the two characters.

Some of the characters were quite stereotypical, for example happy and bubbly girl who only wears pink was called Barbie.

I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving a review. Receiving ARC didn’t affect my opinion of the book.

Nova Baladan is a Bratva princess. But she’s slipped free and is on the loose looking for revenge. She promises to be the villain in her designer combat boots. But sometimes things don’t go to plan, and it’s hard to stick to a plan when the person she’s trying to kill is the boy she had fallen in love with as a teen.

Nova is such an interesting character, her and her former identity Elsa have an interesting dynamic inside of her mind, and I’m interested in seeing how things play out. Nova herself was fun to read, with her OCD compulsions, affinity for combat boots, and constant inner monologue she was a wild ride from start to finish.

Now as for our main man, I didn’t feel like I actually saw that much of him and I wish I had seen more. We have a few scenes with him being our favorite possessive alpha male, but that’s really it. I wish we had been able to see more of their interactions, because their relationship fell kind of flat for me just because they didn’t get much actual time on page.

I loved the whole revenge plot line, and the plot twist at the end made me ravenous for the next book to come out.

Thank you to the publisher for a free copy of this book in exchange for a review. All thoughts are my own.

The characters in 'Ashes go Ashes' are great. I really loved Mila. We get a taste of the rest of the characters that leaves you wanting to read more of them.

Nova can be childish at times, but thay fits her personality and the trauma she's been through.

I got a little lost at the start as there was a lot to take in, and I was a little unsure if we were talking about reincarnation or not, buttt it wasn't long at all before I fully delved into Nova's world.

This novel was Harris's first and now has a growing collection. At the beginning of the book there's a note from author regarding this being her first and how her writing has improved over time. This was included because people had asked if she would be re-writing 'Ashes to Ashes' to improve the quality and Harris wants to keep it as is. I love all of this - I love the acknowledgement of growth in writing, as well wanting to keep something as it is. Taking all of this into consideration I thought it was still reasonably well written. I was intrigued and invested enough to keep reading. Even when I should definitely have been sleeping!

This is a series so there are loose ends and a big cliffhanger. I immediately bought the second and then wrote this review so I can start reading it.

The book definitely kept my interest and had some twists and turns. Not even sure you can call the characters anti-hero. Nova was a bit hard to like even though I understood her anger and attitude, I guess I wanted her to have more of a code when it came to Mila and other innocents after what she had been through herself. Even though Titan is supposed to be the bad guy I liked him and his protectiveness and his willingness to be open about his feelings even while still not fully trusting him. I kind of wished they got more into what happened to Elsa that day. Honestly I spent a good portion of the book trying to figure out if Nova was a reincarnation, if Elsa faked her death, if Nova had multiple personality disorder. All the talk about being dead/killed, but obviously not dead but not being recognized was a bit confusing. Also the book needs a combover. Many mispelled/missused words, and Some info didn't match like she died her hair brunette, but then the rest of the book her hair was described black/raven/ink. Overall good book and I will read the next one in the series.

This book was a great read for me. I had never heard of the author before, and I found her writing refreshing. There will be some spoilers in my review. I adored Nova's dialogue with her former self, whom she refers to as Ghost. Similar to the angel on her shoulder, her Ghost is attempting to keep her mind open to forgiveness. But Nova was ruthless and determined to exact revenge. She manipulates Titan and his friends as she pursues vengeance throughout the book. Before she destroys his family, she wants Titan, her childhood love, to fall in love with her. There are unexpected turns, some tender scenes, and scenes of growing up. The book had a cliffhanger at the end, but thankfully, the second book is almost finished.

Oh man, this book was a total rollercoaster ride! Nova, the MC, had me feeling all kinds of emotions. One moment I loved her, then I wanted to yell at her, and the next, I was totally rooting for her. It was like an emotional whirlwind!

The way she reinvented herself after that awful childhood event was mind-blowing. She went on a total revenge rampage – talk about a fierce female character!

In the book, Nova's past self, the naive girl who fell for the guy that destroyed her life, still haunts her thoughts. She creates an imaginary voice in her head that she calls Ghost. Ghost plays the role of an angel on her shoulder, urging her to forgive Titan, the one who caused her so much pain. It kept the inner dialogue entertaining and not boring

There was romance, payback, and a secret society! I was hooked from page one! Can't wait for the second book.

I'd devoured a couple of recently released books by this author, so I thought an audiobook of this latest one would be a different way to experience her work. But Ashes to Ashes is a different beast altogether. It showcases a darker side of A.G. Harris' writing, and Nova, our FMC, is animalistic and vengeful.

In a wickedly twisted plot, Nova has reinvented herself from the person she once was. The conversations she has with her old self, whom she calls Ghost, are humorous at times, argumentative at others. Revenge is what Nova seeks, and as readers, we are along for a thrilling ride, full of sin, lust, and intrigue.

Mila is Nova's roomie and Dash's sweet girl, whilst Titan may just be Nova's downfall. Struggles, steamy spice, secrets, and shocks...and this is just book 1!
A.G. Harris creates characters that get inside your head and stay with you.

This author is new to me but omg this book is honestly so good!! The way the author wrote this book is so different - the female main character spoke to her old self in her mind (like a subconscious) but also broke the fourth wall to talk to the reader in some parts. This made me love the book even more!

Warning there is a cliffhanger but it’s so well done that it makes you want to read the next one rather than get annoyed that it’s not a HEA.

I thought this was an enjoyable read. Nova was so fierce and such a badass, I loved her! Having her front and centre of the book was refreshing. Titan King is sexy, powerful and cunning. This book is about power and more power, revenge and yes even love .

We've got drama, secrets, deception, revenge and all the favorite elements of a dark romance with mafia elements. I loved reading it. There is so much intensity in this book and I really fall for that.

Nova's conversation with her former self or Ghost as she refers to her was a concept that I liked a lot. It made me feel like no matter how hard you try to run from your past, it is always going to be a part of you!

I'm always a fan of secret society and revenge so I am looking forward to the next book in this duet!

I was gifted the audio book for an honest review.
I have quickly become a loyal fan of A.G. Harris. This book was very different than books of hers I've previously read.
I loved loved loved Nova! She's the witty, strong, bad a** FMC we all wish we could be. I also loved how A.G. threw in these little nuggets of her fashion. Such an awesome addition!
Titan is the ruthless, sexy, hard hearted MMC we love to hate but secretly love to love.
Elsa aka Ghost is shy, timid, kind, romantic, everything that Nova isn't.
The spice was spicin' in this book too!
I rated it a 4 because as much as I liked the differences in voices between the characters, I wasn't a huge fan of the narrators voice. In all fairness, I'm not an audio book girlie.

I really enjoyed this audiobook. Scarlett Bell did a great job with the narration. I could not stop listening! Nova is a bada$$ lead and her internal banter with “Ghost” is hilarious. She pretends not to care and she is darn good at it. I love the different point of views we get too! It was nice to know what was going through the others heads. This is a mafia romance where the Dads and Uncles are in charge but we are focused on the heirs who would take over their father’s legacies, or will they? I am going to need to read the second book asap!!! And I had a feeling he knew!!! I was right! Onto book 2!

so i gave this 3 stars because of the world building. it would of gotten 2.5 stars because of editing errors. theres alot of them but its not to bad but ever noticeable. There's alot of internal dialogue between Elsa/Ghost and Nova but it feels detached. Ex. the name dropping of designer brands most people would say things like louies not say the full name LV out everytime.

also Nova clearly not thinking about what shes doing with her plan would of gotten 2 stars. Dying her hair but not thinking about getting colored contacts....

I thought about DNFing but stuck with it. I enjoyed it and will read part 2 but I won't reread the series but I'd recommend it as mid level read.

I was so invested into this story throughout the entire book. From the moment I read the hooking blurb of what the book was about I knew I was going to enjoy it. And that's exactly what I did. I loved Nova's bad bitch personality and her incredible fashion sense. I wish I had the type of confidence and wardrobe as she does. But I also loved that despite all that she's been through she still kept a piece of her former self (Elsa as Ghost in her head). Can not wait to continue reading the series.

I love a great young version of any Bratva family. The 'family' is well panned out (unlike some others which lead to assumption of dynamics.

There was a lot of question in the beginning about 'ghost' and I found myself wondering if I kept missing something.

Overall? A really good read if you're looking for college level family read.

Thank you so much for sending me an ARC of this book! 😍❤️
I really enjoy the writing style, I found myself giggling and smiling to myself at Nova! I loved how she was talking to the reader! ❤️
The story was amazing, its all about a girl who was seeking revenge to the one who ruined her life. A voice in her head "Ghost" was trying to get her to forgive Titan. I really enjoyed Ghosts and Nova's conversations! 😍

I thought this book was unique and I haven’t read anything like it.
I found the fmc to be badass and I loved how she talked to her younger self and referred to her as “ghost”. Even though she doesn’t admit it, she does have a soft spot for her roommate who she considers weak, but she helps her and it is endearing.
The mmc is such a grumpy sexy jerk and I am here for it!
The ending, ahh the ending, I had to immediately buy the next book because I NEED to know, I am soooo rooting for the main couple!
I also now really want a pair of designer combat boots!

Interesting twist with the main character. I like the conversations she had with her subconscience she called Ghost. I liked Nova more than Titan (he isn't bad yes he gave me all the alpha male essence I needed, but Nova was just so confident and strong, I wanted more of her). I'm so used to reading damsel females that Nova made this book refreshing
I thought the world was interesting, the plot was fast, I didn't get bored.
I finished both books in a week (slow reading by most people's standards but I read for the book, not to brag about my monthly book number)
