The Faery Teachings

Rate this book
The "Faery Teachings" re-attune us to the spirits of the land, sea, wind, flame, human ancestry and the Elder race, which we know as the Faery. This attunement occurs through the application of age-old lore, techniques, folk practices, inner contacts and wisdom of Faery Seership. The stream of mystical teachings contained herein arises from the underworld of creation and babbles through the dark forests of the spirit-world bringing fresh inspiration and deep meaning to the seeker. The source of this stream lies in the stars and deep within the planet nourishing each living thing. It is available to quench the spiritual thirst of the committed seeker of truth. Orion Foxwood is an Elder in Celtic and Romano-Celtic Traditional Craft, a High Priest in Alexandrian tradition and is the Founding Elder of Foxwood Temple of the Old Religion. He is co-director of the Moonridge Center, a land-based nature sanctuary and mystical educational center located in Maryland. He holds a Master of Human Services degree and is a Licensed Professional Counselor. He is a traditional Faery Seer and has taught these practices as well as psychic development, American Southern folk magic and traditional Craft for nearly 20 years.

There are two worlds meshed into one. Ours is the physical world while the faeries live in the underworld. Humans and fae used to dwell side by side but thanks to human excess the fae have retreated from our world and are rather loath to work with us. To repair the land we must start speaking with the denizens of the spiritual world.
The author of this work is a renowned faery seer Orion Foxwood. Have learned the art of conjure from his youth in West Virginia, near the Appalachian Mountains. His family were old conjure people and he himself was born with the caul. His tradition is culled from Native American, African and European sources that found their way to the south and mingled into a tradition.

The book itself has eight exercises and the rest is basically explanation of the paradigm. This spiritual tradition is not a religion or anything like Ceremonial Magic. Rather it is a down to earth spirituality that connects you to the faery forces that regulate our planet. There are no gods and goddesses per se in this.
Faeries exist in the underworld, which by the way is where the dead people go, but for the most part not the same place. We exist in the physical world while up above is the starry world. There are three parts to the soul’s anatomy or there are three souls. The first part is our “Dream walker” this is the part of our soul that walks in the underworld or the fae word. Our surface walker is us which we sue to guide ourselves in the physical world. The third part is the star walker and that is the part of us that walks about in the astral realms.

While there are no deities per se there are a few beings that you want to consider. The first being is the utterer, she spoke the world into being. Next is the dreamer, figurative he dwell in a tower at the center of the earth and it is from his dreams that we all spring. The next being is the “Star Father” who is he masculine being who is a giver of light. The Divine ancestor is the primordial ancestor of mankind. The weaver is an androgynous being who weaves the fibers of life, death and fate.

When one decide to embark upon the faery path or if one is called to it there are always trails, ordeal and prohibitions that must be adhered to. Ordeals are usually tests, challenges or difficulties that are designed to temp and temper the seeker. When one comes into a relationship with their faery guardian or partner they will be given prohibition or things they must do or those that they are not allowed to do. When the seeker makes that oath they must follow it or consequences must surely follow. The prohibitions are designed to make the seeker more spiritual fit to do spiritual work. Working with the fae ones soul has to separate from the body and the soul and body can and do exist separately.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. An absolute classic on the topic. This is about real Faery...not Victorian fantasies of Tinkerbell-like creatures...but the Good People. Lord Orion and R.J. Stewart are the two authors I would recommend the most on this topic.

Picked this back up again. I think it has a lot to teach me if I can only get past the horrible style of the writer. I took a couple of workshops from the author at a festival and was blown away by his knowledge, presence, and charisma. Unfortunately it doesn't translate well to a written form. The two things I like least in magickal books: 1) rampant, sticky psychology-speak, and 2) excessive moral justification and apology for not being Christian or at least Buddhist, are busting out on every page so far. UGH. But the content is supposed to be just what I like, truly shamanic yet applicable to those whom the gods have not called to be "full-time" shamans, distinctly European yet really part of a worldwide tradition of Paganism, idiosyncratic, edgy, and not very New-Agey. So I will keep trying to see the content as separate from this terrible layout and execution.

It was informative. However, certain aspects were repeated numerous times making it redundent.

I kind of looked a the contents of this book as the faery "skin" for what I would liken to the astral world, and any dwellers therein, or simply the concept of "spirit" as a collective and as individual entities, be it former humans or spirits that have never had a human incarnation. Mostly Gaelic in tradition, so if you are into old time Gaelic traditions and Faery lore, then you will totally jive with this title. The author is a great writer in that everything is easy to follow and a pleasure to read through.

We've had so many of our kindred recommend this book and author...
dear lovers of Faerie Lore,

... we had to check it out. While our own relationship with Faerie is somewhat different from the author's, we can certainly see that there is much to be learned and a great deal to be gained from those who feel inclined to the path of Faery Seership as Orion Foxwood outlines in this book. Ultimately we can but say, trust you own heart in choosing this book to read or not. Intellectual considerations would, we think in this case, lead you astray. Trust your feelings. If in looking at the cover of this book, you hear Faerie calling, then this truly is the right book for you at this time.
