Teddy Roosevelt had poor health throughout his childhood, but that didn't keep him from his love of nature or books. Teddy grew up to be strong and healthy. He became a fearless war hero and the youngest United States president.
This is a great book to use for a biography unit or a history lesson on the former president. I like the way the book is set up in small digestible chunks. This book would be great for K-3. I like the timeline in the back and the realistic illustrations. I would have liked to see a few actual photographs as well. I really like how the book makes a point to its readers about how Teddy used the lessons learned from events of his past to help in as he grew older and how he fought for what he believed in during his terms as president.
This was a nice overview of on the life of Teddy Roosevelt, however, it was missing the spark of a theme or underlying story that I've seen in some of the other early reader biographies. We are learning about President Roosevelt before we visit Mount Rushmore. So, our conversations have mostly been about his influence on the National Park system. This book started with the Spanish-American War, which was a topic I haven't covered with my kids yet, so I think that was maybe a bit confusing. It was short. We read it. I'm not sure much will be retained.
