While I was reading Lee Gimenez’ ‘Fireball’ very recently, a thought flashed through my mind. In that book the author had created a formidable opponent for his protagonists J.T. Ryan and Rachel West, yet they were lacking one element to ensure success in their evil endeavors. That factor is simply one of access. I found myself asking would the outcome have been different if someone with access at the highest levels of the US government were coerced into helping the bad guys? Someone like the primary actors in Gimenez’ novels? They say great minds think alike, and it looks like a similar question has been explored by the author in ‘Killshot’. That alone, as a hook, had me buying the novel and eagerly turning to the first chapter. Then the excellent scene-setting, character-development, and solid storyline I have come to expect from Lee Gimenez took over and drove me relentlessly into a page-turning fury.
A key to making this premise credible lies not in the abilities of the protagonists we know from other novels by this superb author, but in the realistic reasoning behind the villains of the piece. I say villains because, this highly-experienced author juggles two in this tale, each with their own agendas which at times are in conflict, which in turn makes for a rich depth to the story and the development of these characters in particular. To describe this outstanding novel as a ‘tour-de-force’ is, by no means, an overstatement. This is Lee Gimenez at his formidable best.
