Λος Άντζελες. Αρχές της δεκαετίας του 1980. Η πανκ σκηνή είναι στα πάνω της στην απέναντι πλευρά του Ατλαντικού. Από την Ανατολική Όχθη και το CBGB μέχρι τη Δυτική Όχθη και το ΛΑ με μπάντες όπως οι Black Flag και οι Bad Religion.. Σε αυτό το πλαίσιο ο Κάιλ Ντέκερ τοποθετεί το μυθιστόρημά του «Θα σπείρουμε τον όλεθρο» που κυκλοφόρησε τον Ιούνιο του 2026 από τις εκδόσεις Έρμα σε μετάφραση Όλγας Καρυώτη.

Μία underground μπάντα αλλά με όνομα στην τοπική σκηνή, ονόματι Bad Chemicals, ύστερα από ένα live ανακαλύπτει τον τραγουδιστή της νεκρό από υπερβολική δόση. Αν και φαινομενικά φαίνεται για τυχαίο θάνατο από χρήση, η κοπέλα του αποθανόντος τραγουδιστή προσλαμβάνει τον Άλεξ Ντάματζ να λύσει την υπόθεση. Ο Άλεξ Ντάματζ είναι ένας πανκ ρόκερ «με μπλε μοϊκάνα και κουρελιασμένο μπουφάν» ο οποίος αναλαμβάνει υποθέσεις ως ανεπίσημος ιδιωτικός ντετέκτιβ, γιατί όπως τονίζει ο ίδιος «οι πανκς μισούν τους μπάτσους». Η υπόθεση αυτή είναι ξεκάθαρο από την αρχή ότι βρομάει. Στην περιπλάνησή του εντός της πανκ σκηνής του ΛΑ, ο Άλεξ Ντάματζ, θα δει πολλή βρομιά που δεν ήξερε ότι υπάρχει, ή δεν ήθελε να δει, ως κομμάτι αυτού του χώρου.

Η περιπλάνηση αυτή θα φέρει στον δρόμο του πρωταγωνιστή και πολλές προσωπικότητες που, θα έλεγε κανείς, ότι δεν έχουν και τις καλύτερες των σχέσεων με τους πανκς. Συντηρητικοί πολιτικοί, διεφθαρμένοι μπάτσοι, άρχοντες ναρκωτικών.

Η αισθητική των νεονουάρ ταινιών της δεκαετίας του 1980 όπως «Ο μπάτσος του Μπέβερλι Χιλς» και το «Φονικό όπλο» είναι διάχυτη καθ’ όλη τη διάρκεια του μυθιστορήματος. Αν σε αυτό προσθέσουμε και τις σαφείς επιρροές του Κάιλ Ντέκερ από συγγραφείς όπως ο Ντάσιελ Χάμετ ή ο Κορνέλ Γούλριτς όσον αφορά το κομμάτι της αστυνομικής λογοτεχνίας, αλλά φυσικά και του Τσαρλς Μπουκόβσκι, τόσο στο κομμάτι της γλώσσας και του κυνισμού, όσο και στο κομμάτι της περιφοράς εντός του ΛΑ της δεκαετίας του 1980 και δη στο Δυτικό Χόλιγουντ, έχουμε ένα αστυνομικό μυθιστόρημα που κλείνει το μάτι και κάνει ένας υπέροχο φόρο τιμής σε αυτούς που ήρθαν πριν.

Ταυτόχρονα, ο Κάιλ Ντέκερ, δεν παραλείπει να κάνει κοινωνικό και πολιτικό σχόλιο μέσα από τις σελίδες του βιβλίου, με έναν ιδιαιτέρως διακριτικό αλλά ορατό τρόπο. Ο μάτσο τρόπος ζωής, τα ναρκωτικά αλλά και η Επανάσταση στη Νικαράγουα που λάμβανε χώρα την ίδια περίοδο, είναι συνεχώς στο κάδρο γεμίζοντας με βάθος την ήδη γεμάτη ιστορία.

Ένα κομμάτι που αξίζει αναφοράς, είναι ότι στην ιστοσελίδα του συγγραφέα, θα βρει κανείς σύνδεσμο για τη σελίδα bandcamp μίας μπάντας με το όνομα The Bad Chemicals. Σύμφωνα με το βιογραφικό που υπάρχει, οι The Bad Chemicals είχαν ηχογραφήσει κάποια demo που χάθηκαν και βρέθηκαν χρόνια μετά σε ένα στούντιο. Ο Κάιλ Ντέκερ είναι και μουσικός. Έτσι ηχογράφησαν αυτά τα κομμάτια και κυκλοφόρησαν ένα digital EP που συνοδεύει αυτό το βιβλίο. Πρέπει εδώ να αναφερθεί ότι τα κομμάτια αυτά, είναι όλα όσα κομμάτια αναφέρονται και στο μυθιστόρημα ως μέρος του setlist των Bad Chemicals. Μια πανέξυπνη ιδέα του συγγραφέα που θολώνει τα όρια μεταξύ πραγματικότητας και λογοτεχνίας και αφήνει το βιβλίο και του Bad Chemicals να δημιουργούν έναν δικό τους μύθο.

Εν κατακλείδι, το «Θα σπείρουμε τον όλεθρο» είναι ένα εξαιρετικό μυθιστόρημα αστυνομικής/ νουάρ λογοτεχνίας που οι λάτρεις της αμερικάνικης σχολής του είδους θα εκτιμήσουν. Αν τυχαίνει, αυτοί οι λάτρεις να γουστάρουν και το πανκ τότε οι πιθανότητες είναι πως θα το λατρέψουν.

Ένα πάρα πολύ πρωτότυπο βιβλίο: ο πρωταγωνιστής είναι πανκιό ιδιωτικός ντετέκτιβ !
Η περιρρέουσα ατμόσφαιρα καταπληκτική: πάνκς, σκίνχεντς, πρεζάκια, πορνοστάρ, διεφθαρμένοι εγκληματίες μπάτσοι, διεφθαρμένοι εγκληματίες πολιτικοί, νονοί του υπόκοσμου, βαποράκια, πόρνες, μπσράκια, μπάντες, συναυλίες.

I loved the specificity of "This Rancid Mill," which completely transports the reader to LA in the early 80s, including the politics and culture of the punk scenes. Even though I wasn't particularly invested in the characters or the outcome of the novel, Alex is a fun, quippy narrator; it's interesting how he's clearly harmed by normative expectations of masculinity (punk = quite subversive in his world) while also perpetuating it himself. The author sends Alex on a wild (and dangerous) goose chase through LA, which could feel repetitive (there wasn't always tons of payoff as the plot careens in multiple directions) but still maintained my interest. As a mystery/thriller, "This Rancid Mill" is both a page-turner and a time capsule; if you're interested in the concept & are willing to put up with men being kind of annoying throughout the book, then I'd for sure recommend.

I liked where the book started more than where it ended up. Street-level punk detective is fun. High body counts and warehouse shootouts should be in book 6.

Loved it. Couldn’t put it down. I’m a big fan of noir, but not of the genre’s tropes. This book had everything I love about noir and none of the expected typical noir cliches - it riffs on them and hooks a sharp left. It’s so refreshing to read through a male characters growth in perception of important issues in a community of supporting characters you really give a shit about. The world is real and immersive. Can’t wait to read the next one!

Readers interested in seeing how a hard-boiled detective novel plays out amidst the 1981 Los Angeles punk scene will definitely want to check this out. (Those not familiar with the LA scene of that era can set the mood by watching the documentary film The Decline of Western Civilization, Part I before starting the book.) The book opens the morning after a big punk show, as Alex "Damage" stumbles awake with his blue mohawk and leather jacket to learn that his idol Jerry, lead singer of the fictitious Bad Chemicals, has died of a heroin overdose.

Alex is a kind of underground private-eye, and Jerry's sexy girlfriend Zii hires him to dig deeper, suspecting foul play. What follows is a wild ride through early-80s Los Angeles, featuring punks, neo-Nazi skinheads, Huntington Beach surfers turned skinheads, a coked-out John Holmes, Moral Majority politicians, crooked LAPD, and the very seamiest of the city's underbellies. It's a very hectic and brutal ride, with drugs, sexual violence and rape, torture, and plenty of nasty fights. I lost track of how much damage the aptly named Alex takes, but it requires some serious suspension of disbelief. By the end I felt like I'd read something very familiar and old-fashioned, a la Dashiell Hammet, but painted in more lurid modern colors. Readers who have the stomach for it and an interest in the blend of genre and 80s subcultures should definitely check it out.

Αν βάλετε στο μίξερ τύπους στιλ Τσάντλερ, Χάμετ, Σπιλέιν κ.λπ. μαζί με λίγο από Μπουκόφσκι, καθώς επίσης και μπόλικο πανκ ροκ και όλη τη σχετική underground σκηνή και αισθητική (βλέπε συναυλίες σε καταγώγια, διάφορα ρεμάλια, πολλά ναρκωτικά), και όλα αυτά στο Λος Άντζελες στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του '80 (με την ανάλογη περιρρέουσα πολιτική ατμόσφαιρα), τότε μπορείτε να πάρετε μια ιδέα για το τι θα διαβάσετε σε τούτο το βιβλίο. Πρωταγωνιστής είναι ένας νεαρός πάνκης με μοϊκάνα που το παίζει ιδιωτικός ντετέκτιβ, ο οποίος θα αναλάβει για λογαριασμό μιας γκόμενας τον ύποπτο θάνατο ενός τραγουδιστή πανκ συγκροτήματος. Ο πάνκης πρωταγωνιστής μας θα μπλέξει σε μια πολύ σκοτεινή και επικίνδυνη ιστορία και στον δρόμο του θα συναντήσει εμπόρους ναρκωτικών, νταβατζήδες, πορνοστάρ, διεφθαρμένους μπάτσους και πολιτικούς και κάθε είδους ρεμάλια της πανκ ροκ σκηνής, ενώ δεν είναι λίγες οι φορές που θα φάει (αλλά και θα δώσει) ξύλο ή που θα βρεθεί με το ένα πόδι στον τάφο. Ούτε τον συγγραφέα ήξερα, ούτε βέβαια το βιβλίο, αλλά τσίμπησα από την περίληψη και την υπέροχη αισθητική της ελληνικής έκδοσης, και τελικά διάβασα ένα πολύ καλογραμμένο, νευρώδες και τσίτα τα γκάζια νέο-νουάρ μυθιστόρημα, το οποίο ειλικρινά σας λέω δεν κατάλαβα πότε το ξεκίνησα και πότε το τελείωσα. Διάβασα τριακόσιες εβδομήντα σελίδες σε δυο καθισιές, κάτι που είχα καιρό να κάνω. Όσοι λατρεύετε τα σκληροτράχηλα νουάρ, αλλά και την πανκ μουσική, τότε πιστεύω ότι θα περάσετε τέλεια την ώρα σας με τούτο το βιβλίο.

I always thought that discussions of rape (of women - by men) should come only from women, since no man can fully comprehend that experience. And even though I stand by this, what about a man who realizes that the men around him are rapists and abusers? This book gives the very important perspective of a man gradually confronting how male privilege can enable abusive behaviour, even among progressive leaders. I generally dislike stories set in the underworld of crime and drugs, because I find the glorification of characters involved in said activities harmful. Here, however, that setting creates a unique opportunity: it can lure men into believing they are reading a superficial mystery/action/crime novel, with cool, hardened protagonists, while gradually leading them towards an understanding of the harm men perpetrate. I sincerely hope this book reaches many, many men, and helps them understand that they can be impressive and tough and get the girl, while still treating others with decency.

Αστυνομικό με πανκ αναφορές - ή βασικά πανκ αναφορές με αστυνομική πλοκή.
Καλές προθέσεις, ειλικρινής κεντρικός χαρακτήρας, ενδιαφέρον κλείσιμο, αλλά πολλά παραπάνω κλισέ και (κυρίως) ευκολίες απ' όσες μπορώ να συγχωρήσω, ακόμα και σε ένα αστυνομικό παραλίας (to name a few: ο Άλεξ γλιτώνει 2 φορές από θάνατο μέσα σε μισή σελίδα, το arc του Ραπουνζέλ δεν βγάζει νόημα, διάφοροι "κακοί" βγαίνουν από τη μέση κωμικά εύκολα, χωριά τα 4 deus ex Machina).


Μου θύμισε ένα κατά τα άλλα άσχετο βιβλίο, τα "Κρυφά Διαμάντια": ο συγγραφέας είχε *πολλές απόψεις* που ήθελε να γράψει για ένα πολύ συγκεκριμενο θέμα (στα Διαμάντια την indie σκηνή, εδώ την πανκ), και η ίδια η ιστορία τελικά είναι δευτερεύουσα.
Με αυτό το δεδομένο, είμαι περίεργος να δω το δεύτερο βιβλίο του συγγραφέα: θα γράψει πάλι το ίδιο βιβλίο, ή μπορεί να μετακινηθεί σε κάτι πέρα από τις προσωπικές του αναφορές;

Alex Damage is a punk, a private investigator (unlicensed), and scene-lover. But when a 19 year-old lead singer of a beloved punk band turns up dead, the singer's secretly rich ex-girlfriend puts him on the chase. But this case is unlike anything Alex has seen before: it's leading him to police corruption, drug and sex rings, and skinhead gangs. Just how many beatings can Alex take?

This was a fun book that kept me guessing. I loved reading about the LA punk scene and the ways Alex gets himself into--and out of--trouble all the while keeping true to rejecting copaganda and his own personal morals. Definitely a fun read if you're looking for a mystery unlike what's currently out there.

An absolutely smashing read. I loved every second of life through Alex Damage’s eyes. Kyle Decker nailed the voices, attitudes, and ideologies of punks in the early 80’s, and applied it to one hell of a fun noir-laced murder mystery that would make Raymond Chandler proud. I won’t ruin the plot by saying anything about it, because it comes fast and it comes hard and the plot twists are relentless. I hope Decker has plans for more Alex Damage books because I would sign up for a subscription.

I found this book because I wanted to read a novel that mirrored some great cult classic films like Repo Man and Suburbia. I was more than happy with what I got.

Μια πιθανή δολοφονία που πρέπει να εξιχνιαστεί σε μια περίοδο άγνωστη για μένα, κάτι που μου κέντρισε ακόμα περισσότερο το ενδιαφέρον.
Ο συγγραφέας μπλέκει υπέροχα την ιστορία του με την πραγματικότητα της πανκ εποχής, με πολλές αναφορές σε καταστάσεις, κοινωνικές συνθήκες και μουσικές επιλογές εκείνης της περιόδου. Κι όλα αυτά σε συνδυασμό με μια έξυπνη γραφή, με μαύρο χιούμορ κι έναν πρωταγωνιστή που όσο κυλάει η ιστορία γουστάρεις όλο και περισσότερο.
Ο Αλεξ Νταματζ θα μπορούσε να αποτελέσει μια πηγή στοχασμού από μεγάλο μέρος του αντρικού φύλου σε ό,τι αφορά τον κοινωνικό τους ρόλο και τις επιλογές τους που κάποιες από αυτές θεωρούνται θεμιτές ακόμα και σήμερα.

A neo-noir novel with a title clipped from a classic song by The Germs? Sign me up. But why do people hire private investigators? For Alex Danger, the explanation could not make more sense; Cops hate Punks. Not the late 1990s vintage of middle class irony posing as lyrics and musicality with all the depth of a frozen pizza. No, Alex is a resident of Punk's early years; all anti-establishment and safety pins, two chords and done within ninety seconds. But he is a punk who gives a shit about his little scummy corner of Los Angeles and this book builds a solid version of it.

Loved this. A hardboiled noir PI novel, but set in the 80s LA punk scene. A fresh look at some classic tropes. The mystery itself was twisty and kept me guessing throughout. Hope this is the start of a new series.

It was hard to put this book down. Damage/Alex is a pretty cool character, and I love hearing his thoughts about what he's learned about things like sexism. There are news reports about El Salvador in the background. But Alex's life is very violent and his days are clearly numbered because of his lifestyle.

But there are descriptions of awful things in including OD'ing, rape, alcoholism, finding a horrific dead body, severe beatings, shootings, ugh. If you can handle that stuff and you like punk music or the folks in the scene, the punk stuff is pretty great (except for his disgusting apartment and eating/drinking habits lol)

A spectacular read to begin 2024. Decker, a Chicagoan,
pulls off a "punk-grunge noire" that won the best book in Chicago's Reader for 2023.
