A contemporary fantasy story about power, magic, and love.

When a whole new world full of magic is revealed, Sophie learns that her amulet can bring peace or chaos to it. She thought college was going to be the most exciting time of her life, yet the lurking danger and an all-consuming love make studying seem insignificant.

I want to thank Arianne, for reaching out to me to send me her book. I am so so grateful bcs I fell in love with the story immediately.
I was in literal therapy and couldn’t stop thinking about the book. I wanted to know everything, and like AHHH I was just so so obsessed.

This book (series) deserves so much more hype.
(tbh it deserves even more hype then books that r actually popular, but are shit..)
ALSO TYTY ARIANNE FOR SENDING ME BOOK 2 ASWELL!! I can’t wait to read it immediately after writing this review :).
So excited for book 3 to come out aswell!! And no matter what people would say ab this book my opinion wouldn’t change because I AM IN LOVE.

So let’s start now.
The writing of the book was a m a z i n g. I don’t have anything bad to say about the book itself fr.
I did guess the plottwist but idfc because I was looking out to the end so bad because I wanted to know how exactyl Kane was gonna betray her.
And oh my shit.. I never would’ve thought he would have trued to kill her?! And then even steal the fking mirror?! NUH UH KEEP UR HANDS TO URSELF MAN.
First he showers her with so much love (tbh I fell in love) but then after he said I love you, I just knew he wasn’t to be trusted. It came too fast and he got different kind of moods especcially when Sophie didn’t want to give him the mirror..

« It is said that with age, it's harder to remember what happened yesterday than what happened decades ago. »

At first I fr thought it was gonna be between Ryu and Kane of who the ´him’ chapters were. But I quickly changed my mind to Raiden and Kane. It was so goodly written that it could be both of them.
Raiden always wanted to say something but just then Kane ´saved’ her🤨. So I found him rlly sus.

Ok I am so bad at writing in order but I am just gonna talk ab the diff characters now.
Ryu, he is the funny one in my opinion and I just hope he isn’t on Kane his side :D.
Kane, first I fr loved him and I thought okok he is gonna betray but I would still love him, but no what he did is unforgivable. He shot his powers at her TWICE. Not only at the tournament but also in the forrest which he than later blamed on Raiden💀. The power really got to his head.. Like Anka said happend to her husband aswell.
That’s why I liked that everyone had different coloured lights as power. Kane white, Ryu blue, Raiden red,…
Kaira made me scared sometimes, like she is so badass but also kinda hates Sophie for a reason we don’t rlly know 100% yet.
Logan is still 50/50 for me, but I am trusting him more and more tbh. Daniel is the same but now I am questioning it because of him standing on Kane and Ryu’s side and not Raiden and Kaira?
Like Idrk yet.
I did love Anka but after the fight I was also more 50/50 ab her.

Omg I need to tell something💀. I fr first thought that Luke was gonna be Raiden who manipulated Julia into marrying him or some shit BUT HE WAS JUST A NORMAL DUDE LMFAO😭.
I LOVED Sophie her parents so so much. They really care about her and I hope nothing bad happens to them so her dad can keep watching basketball🤌.
I loved how we got to understand Laura also a bit more and Akio aswell, but I hope we also get to know even more about them and what exactly happend to Akio.

The fights were described SO AMAZING. I was so so invested, because nirmally I kinda skip fights bcs it’s or boring or just not cool enough. But in this book, and I mean especially the finale battles, THEY HAD ME HOOKED ALR?! I was so so invested I just don’t have the words anymore.

Also her ´nightmares’ ?! I just knew something was off about them. W the light coming towards her and her thinking it’s gonna save her 😀 nuh uh Kane mf tried to do something bad.

I loved how the last last last thing we read was the letter Raiden wrote with most of it explained in it, and Sophie is to decide if he gets to live or die. SHE BETTER CHOOSES LIVE🫵🤨.
Raiden also found the otherhalf of the mirror but now Kane prob has her half she got from her aunt Laura :(.

« So, I chose to play the bad guy. The villain. I know I made a mistake by staying away, but as hard as it may be to understand, I did everything for you. »

One last thing, THE CHARACTERS HAVE ART OF THEM! And I am so in love w them all (even Kane🏃‍♀️) Everyone is so so gorgeous tbh.

Wow, what an adventure.. This book had me from page one. The normal world with a bit of magic involved. Good guy/bad guy vibes.. Easy to remember all the things that had happend. At times a little predictable.. but also very interesting. The tensions between them (love and hate) were a great addition.

Its a great read. Would really recommend it to people who love a magical adventure..! Can’t wait for the sequel 😁

Had my guesses throughout the book, which made me second guess everything close to the end. I was wondering if I overlooked anything. Tho I ended up being right. (Devilish laugh 😈)

From the first moment I met Kane in the book, he had bad boy vibes all over him. They fell in love so fast that I had more questions. Throughout the book he was very sweet towards Sophie, but I somehow couldn’t believe him.

Ryu is a very sweet character in the book. Im not sure where I stand in my opinion on him. If he had known all along, or if he is just an ‘innocent’ bystander.

Raiden took on the role of villian. Eventho I never quite believed it. Sure he wasn’t very kind to her, and tried to take the mirror from her at some time. She even believed he wanted to kill her.. But somehow I thought he had feelings for her. That he was the one keeping his eyes on her. Making sure she was safe.

Kaira… well she hasn’t been mentioned that much in the story. The role she had wasn’t a very kind/loving role. But maybe that’s because Raiden told her not to ‘drop their covers’ or something. Hopefully that will be in one of the next books. I hope to get to know her more. She’s an interesting character for sure.

Let’s just say that im looking forward to the next book. Can’t wait to find the answers to all my questions, that are bubbling in my head.

This is the first book the Soul Erosion series.
Sophie is set to embark on a new phase in her life—college. Sophie's goal was to be an astrophysicist and mostly to hold on to a mirror, which is a beloved heirloom from her aunt Laura. She is lured into a new realm of magic and power when two mysterious guys cross her path. Just because the hereditary mirror is the key to tremendous power.
Sophie has to decide whether to keep a promise she made and destroy the magical realm in an attempt to keep her own life.

The storyline was simple to understand and fast-paced. The characters were brilliantly portrayed, and I adored them.
Sophie is a courageous, stubborn, and fun-loving girl. The Saito brothers were excellent, and I enjoyed how unique they were from one another. I loved the chemistry between the lead characters, it was amazing. You get mystery, powerful male and female characters.
The plot twist at the end left me speechless and tore me apart.

YA read! 3.5/5 ⭐️ great plot!

Sophie is thrust into a world of power and magic without knowing why; except that it involves an heirloom from her aunt. Brothers Kane and Ryu show up to protect her from their world and the people after her, even if it’s their own family.

Crazy plot twist at the end. I did feel like a lot was overly described in the beginning but it was a good story overall. Interested to see what happens next!

3,5 / 5 ⭐️

The book reads easily, but I find the story somewhat predictable. I also missing some depth in the story and did not really feel a connection with the characters yet. This book does feel like an introduction to the second book, so I am very curious about the second book.

It is certainly a nice book to have read once and also a good debut by Arianne Nicks.

I have a lot of feelings about this one.
It's a great read that feels light.

The magic system is not too complicated, with a beautiful and cozy scenery as the story progresses. It's easy to follow, the word building is great, the heroine is relatable. You get really strong, hot, mysterious guys, powerfull female characters, tension from time to time, and a mystery to solve on your own.

Definitely waiting for vol 2 with my heart shattered rn.

*SPOILERS AHEAD*

I really liked the Saito brothers and how they each had something unique. I was rooting for Raiden the moment he made an appearance and I enjoyed every little scene with him and Sophie.
As I was reading, my heart was breaking for Sophie, for all the moments when Kane was mean to her, and for what I knew was coming. I felt like she had more chemistry with Raiden in those short moments, than with Kane in the whole book. I almost cried in the end, when reading Raiden's letter.

So, about Sophie, I enjoyed her stubbornness *sometimes*. She really wants to keep her family and friends safe and will even put herself in danger for them. I admire that, and I know her intentions were pure, but it seemed to me like she was just thinking about herself when she came to Japan with help from the Legion. Despite that, I loved her determination to keep the mirror, even when Kane got mad at her and made some questionable decisions. It really shows how important Laura was to her.

I'm dying to know what Ryu, Daniel and Anka are thinking about all of this, if they were on it too.

Fantastic book! Great world building but not too hard to understand. I’m obsessed with all of the MMCs. I love the FMC. The plotline feels very original, like something I haven’t quite read before. AND THAT ENDING🔥🔥🔥 had my jaw on the floor!
Great first introductory book into this trilogy, and I can’t wait to get into book 2!

SPOILER ALERT

Sophie has inherited a mirror from her aunt that turns out to be magical and wanted by many people - dangerous ones too - in the magical world. The fighters Kane and Ryu make it their goal to protect Sophie and the mirror, especially from their older brother Raiden who seems adamant in getting his hands on Sophie's heirloom.

This dual POV book follows the main character Sophie in her exploration of love and the magical world that is new to her (and the reader). I can't wait for book two to come out and bring light into the darkness of all the questions that are raised in book one. And I also can't wait to read more about my favourite character - Raiden. Let's hope he isn't right and the "villain" will get the girl in the end ;)

I really enjoyed reading this book and am looking forward to more books in this series. Roll on 2023.

It reads easily which is a good point, but first it feels that there is no depth in the story, but oh boy, how wrong I was.
Through the whole book I had predictions, but I was never too sure about it, so I always second guessed myself.
It jumps straight into the events and Sophie finds herself in an insta love situation, and I was like, what?! What is happening? The insta love trope is not for me, but it turned out the situation is not that simple, also, Sophie is a young woman, so insta love is just really realistic for her. But I never felt that chemistry between these two, so I always had suspicions about Kane.
Ryu just seems to be an innocent good guy, who doesn’t know a thing, but I could be very wrong. Along with Daniel and Anka.
And then we met Raiden and of course he is the villain, but I instantly felt a spark between him and Sophie. He is mean to her, and she thinks that he is trying to kill her, that is why I was never too sure about these two. But when Raiden is talking to her, saying things like “Anything for you, Sophie.” and similar things, it feels like it’s genuine, in his own way. So yeah, I had suspicions that he has feelings for her.
We actually didn’t met Kaira just a few times throughout the book. She is not a pleasant person, but I think in the second book we will get our answers.
As the events progressed, I became more and more invested in the story and got attached to the characters. As I reached to the final chapters I was so intrigued what will be the outcome, because I had no clue. But I’d have never guessed that plot twist in the end. I was just sitting and blinking for a few seconds, internally screaming when I finished the book.
I NEED book two, because I have to know the whys! I have so many questions, that needs to be answered.
Totally underrated book, so if you are into contemporary fantasy books, give it a chance, you would not regret it.

I really enjoyed this book, and I can't wait to read the next one in the series!

What it's About (No Spoilers):

Imagine a recently passed loved one leaves you an object with an unusual note to always keep it, and it will lead you to your true love. Will you follow your loved one's last wish? What if it the object turns out to not be so ordinary after all?

Add in a world full of magic that is no longer hidden, a magical tournament where the winner gets more power, and a magical family with a ton of secrets. Don't forget a dash of romance and a mysterious, unknown protector!

Mix it all together, and you get Soul of Light and Thunder!

My Thoughts:

The first half of this book reads more like a very long prologue. There is a lot of world building and not much happens.

I often felt confused about what was going on during the first half of the book. However, considering the book is told in 1st-person POV and the main character is only around 18, the confusion makes sense. The character didn't know what was going on, so I didn't either. It just took some time for me to get used to.

The second half of the book is where things start to really pick up, and the confusion begins to clear! This is truly where the story starts! I don't want to give anything away, but the flow of the story from here is great! I can see how things are being set-up for the next book (although some of my predictions may not be right, of course) and with how this one ended I need to read the next one soon!

I recommend this book if you like magic in our everyday world (no other universe or magical locations), magical fights, and some romance!

*I was given a free electronic copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.

A Soul of Light and Thunder introduces readers to Sophie, a relatable protagonist navigating the complexities of college and her late aunt's mysterious legacy. From the outset, Sophie's endearing nature captivates, drawing readers into her world. The arrival of two enigmatic brothers, tied to her aunt's past, sets the stage for a thrilling journey of discovery.

As Sophie grapples with newfound revelations and the gift of a magical amulet, the narrative unfolds through her perspective and that of one of the brothers, adding depth to the story. While some parts of the plot may initially feel slow, the intrigue surrounding the Kaito siblings keeps readers engaged, though the romance between Sophie and Kane may lack some depth early on.

However, the story's climax delivers a satisfying twist, leaving readers eager for the next installment. Arianne's skillful characterization shines through, particularly in the portrayal of the Saito brothers, each possessing unique traits that add layers to the narrative. Sophie's resilience and determination, despite facing challenges, make her a compelling protagonist.

The blend of magic, mystery, and romance in a contemporary setting offers a refreshing take on the genre. While the initial world-building may leave readers feeling disoriented, the payoff in the latter half of the book makes it worth the journey. With its captivating storytelling and imaginative premise, "A Soul of Light and Thunder" promises an unforgettable reading experience.

Overall, Arianne's debut novel sets the stage for an enthralling series filled with magic, secrets, and unexpected twists. Fans of urban fantasy will find much to enjoy in this captivating tale of love and destiny.

I loved this book and would recommend it to anyone whether they are into fantasy or not 🍋💗.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5

“There is heartbreak everywhere. You just have to pick yourself carefully. It takes a little bit of luck and a little bit of magic to find the kind of love that deserves to break your heart.”

Soul of Light and Thunder. This book had me hooked from the first line. The mystery kept me so intrigued from the very beginning.

To sum it up mirror, magic, tournament and brothers.

Sophie absolutely loved right from the beginning. The “romance” with Kane I was rooting for in the beginning but that changed so fast. The betrayal very much unforgivable. I KNEW THE I LOVE YOU THAT QUICKLY MEANT HE SHOULDN’T BE TRUSTED!!

The dual POV was interesting in a good way. I loved the him POV the most I just wanted to know more and more.

Raiden I absolutely have a love hate relationship with. THE END OF THIS BOOK!! I NEED MORE!! “Villains don’t get happy endings. We never get the girl. If we’re lucky enough to live, our lives are nothing but bitter shadows of what could have been.” SOPHIE I swear better choose for him to live.

The tournament that was an incredible experience. THE TWIST of Sophie being present on the battlefield got me when I read that scene. Jaw was on the floor!

Thank you so much Arianne for sending me a digital copy of the book! Can’t wait to get my hands on a paperback! Absolutely cannot wait to read book 2! 🫶🏻

Overall, if you want a fast paced book, that will keep you intrigued from the very beginning I definitely recommend it! A lovely contemporary fantasy!

Soul of Light and Thunder by Adrienne Nicks is the first book the Soul Erosion series. Sophie is ready to start a new chapter in her life, college. When two mysterious boys enter her path she's pulled into a new world of magic and wonder. Why? Because her inherited mirror is the key to tremendous power. Sophie has a single choice: keep a promise she vowed, or save her own life, possibly condeming the magical world in the process.

First off, I loved this book. Sophie is a very relateable, down-to-earth character so it's easy to slip into her pov and get comfortable. I also loved the mysterious "Him" pov parts. They add more to the book but still have a hint of mystery as you do not know who this character is and it keeps you guessing.

This book was a quick read and I read most of it in two sittings. There were hardly any dull moments and the action flowed from one scene to the next fluildly, keeping me reading. The action really picked up near the end and the ending of the book left me speechless! Uhm, book 2 when??

The magic system was interesting and unique but also grounded and made sense. I'd recommend this book to anything who loves urban contemporary fantasy and wants to read a story about love, magic and power.

Thank you so much to the author for providing me with a review copy of this novel. All thoughts and opinions in this review are my own.

I first decided I wanted to read this book because I heard some of the events happen in Japan. I loved a lot of things about this book:
- The title of the series... (Soul Erosion, beautiful!)
- The writing style was absolutely charming in some parts
- Sophie's internal dialogue (which made me laugh out loud at times)
- Sophie's relationship with her family
- Sophie's friendship with Ryu

I liked Sophie, but I was frustrated with many of her decisions throughout the book. I'm guessing she is going to mature a lot as the series progresses (hopefully). The one thing I disliked was that I felt the romance was rushed, but I made my peace with this since I was more invested in the plot and the settings than the relationship.

Overall, I found the story enjoyable, and it gave me the vibes of the Vampire Diaries and Hunter X Hunter. Ryu and Raiden were my favorite characters that I wish to see more of in book 2. I'm also looking forward to more events happening in Japan because we just can't get enough of that.

Soul of Light and Thunder, the first book in the Soul Erosion Series, is an urban fantasy book that follows Sophie's journey since she finds out that the mirror she inherited from her dead aunt has tremendous powers. Instead of just starting her college life, Sophie also starts an unexpected adventure by suddenly realising that in order to keep the promise she has done to her aunt (of keeping the mirror safe) she must do more than putting it into a drawer and forget about it. Sophie must confront some foes that are able to manipulate magic easily.
It has a dual POV, which is always interesting. However, the romance part was too honeyed for me and I couldn't really root for the couple.
There is a very cool twist at the end, but in all honesty, I am the kind of reader who wants twists sprinkled throughout the story and I would have liked more turns of events. But that's just me :)
I have to say that overall it's a good read and I would recommend it.

I am literally writing this review at 1am immediately after finishing the book. The ending has me hooked and awaiting book 2! Arianna Nicks urban fantasy novel has a uniquely built magic system which I absolutely loved. Sophie (the fmc) is refreshingly human - studying physics at college when she becomes involved in the magical world, despite possessing no magic herself, her character arc is realistic. She doesn’t magically become some super brave incredibly gifted fighter - she remains limited by her lack of magic but her human emotions and kindness act as a strength that often goes unnoticed. The book was written in a way that allowed me to experience this new and confusing magical world with Sophie. With everyone withholding information and conflicting stories Sophie has to navigate this new world with half the picture and as a reader I felt like I was right there with her. Now I love a bit of brother/family conflict… queue the Saito brothers (and Kaira of course!). With the addition of the mysterious ‘Him’ whose perspective is written so well that it is impossible to really confirm who he is until the character reveals themself. The purpose of Book 1 is clearly ground building - to set up this new urban fantasy world - and readers should be aware that this makes up a large percentage of the book but bear with it and the action really starts taking off towards the end. Super excited to read Book 2 which I am confident will have me addicted!

This is the debut novel in the Soul Erosion series and I'm totally hooked.
Sophie is a really likeable character, she's just a normal girl, who finds herself in a strange world filled with danger and magic.
The magic system is unique and down to earth at the same time with rules and boundaries. I'm eager to know more about the life of the warriors and their world as the series continues.
This book checks out everything you need in a good story:
magic
romance
danger
beautiful setting
cliffhanger ending
The Saito brothers are perfect, all 3 of them are charming in their own way.
The story is fast paced and the ending leaves you wanting more.
I can't wait for the next book to see what happens next!

ARC Review!!! A Soul of Light and Thunder by Arianne Nicks

Sophie is excited to start college and begin to move on from the loss of her beloved aunt Laura. She has spent years throwing herself into school as a way to cope, but she is hoping that this will be a real fresh start. But this new beginning is more than she bargained for. It is not long until she is pulled into a world she never expected, a world of danger and magic, a world searching for the power hidden within a gift she inherited from her aunt. Sophie must learn to navigate this new world, surrounded by dangerous magical warriors who are fighting to protect her, or to destroy her to steal the power she guards.

3.5 Stars

What I liked: The magic in this book is very tangible and believable. Sophie is a relatable main character and she holds herself up well as a “commoner” in a world filled with magic.

What I didn’t like: I struggled with the romance in some parts of the book. But without spoiling anything, I felt like my hesitations were addressed and I bought-in more for the second half of the book.

The final say: It took me awhile to fall in love with these characters, but I started to enjoy the book and I am excited for the next in the series! If you like magic, battles, young love, and secrets, this is a great book for you!

Such an interesting plot! I really enjoyed Sophie’s story overall. I think some part were a little rushed or predictable, so that’s why I gave 4 stars. There were certain parts of the story that could have been a bit more fleshed out. But overall, you get the idea and you’re able to fill in the blanks.

SPOILERS BELOW!!

So the “Him” parts!!!! At the end it’s revealed who it is, and I kind of had a small inkling it was him instead of who the author wants you to assume it is. I think it’s a really nice plot twist!! I’m very excited to see what happens next.

Completely honest review.

First of all, the grammatical errors in this book were enough to stop me from being able to become fully immersed. Every time I came across one, it would take me away from the storyline.

The positives were: Raiden, and Japan.

The negatives were: Thoughts should be ideas, I don't want to be told, I want it to be hinted at. The main character's romantic/sexual tension was non existent, so I didn't feel a build up, and I didn't feel connected to these characters at all. The writing style would have benefited from some more depth and substance, which would have allowed the reader to become emotionally attached to the characters.

The ending was predictable, but it was the best part.

ARC BOOK REVIEW

Soul of Light and Thunder by Arianne Nicks is the first book in the Soul Erosion series and as soon as I finished it I wanted more.

The book follows Sophie our main character as she enters college and her world changes forever when she finds out that not only magic exists, but her treasured mirror; a gift from her beloved aunt, has the power to either make or break the world as we know it.

This book is essentially a long prologue for the books to come. Not much is happening throughout the book, we are mainly getting to know our main characters and learning bits and pieces about this whole new world of magic that Sophie has discovered.

I felt like we needed to know a lot more about the structure of the magic world, how it works and much more about the magic system, but as soon I as finished the book I could tell that it was done intentionally and that it served a purpose.

The story felt light and I went through it quickly and with ease. The main narrator is Sophie but we have a dual pov without knowing who is the other person talking, I really liked that, it surprised me.

The plot twist at the end was really good. I kinda saw it coming, but that doesn’t mean that is was any less impactful. I can’t wait to see what happens next in this series!

This book is absolutely incredible, and the story is unlike any book I've ever read! I truly enjoyed the story of Sophie, Kane, and Raiden! The magic, powers, battles, touch her and ⚔️ protectiveness, secrets, and the magic world were beautifully written! I became truly captivated, and as soon as I finished, I immediately bought book 2 because I just HAD to find out what happened!
I am still so surprised this book isn't HUGE yet because it certainly should be! Full review on my insta book_lovers_unite2024!

I ate this book up! It was such an easy & fast paced read for me. This book is staged in modern day with a little sprinkle of magic 🤭 The love story between Sophie & Kane had me cheesing so hard. The good vs evil aspect in this book was just chefs kiss. Some parts in the book were easily predictable but the way it was written still made it very enjoyable! Also there’s a MYSTERY man throughout the book?! Ugh and the plot twist at the end has me excited to read the next book! The only thing I surprisingly wish this book was… longer! I think there could’ve been so much more depth if it had just been 100-150 pages longer!

I had a lot of fun with this book!

Sophie is a very relatable character, surrounded by other interesting and mysterious characters. I loved the multicultural setting (Japan? yes please), the dual POV, and the fact that I didn't know who 'Him' was. The ending took me by surprise. Book two when???

Overall a strong debut for an indie author.

I was offered this book for free for giving by honest review. Thank you again, @authorariannenicks, for giving me this opportunity.

This book is so fast-paced in how quickly everything happens, and I loved it. It happens quickly and leaves you wanting more. I kind of expected what happened to happen just because of how fast Sophie was in love with Kane. Sophie is painfully naive, so I'm hoping in book two she grows up a bit in that way and has some character development in Soul of Glass and Fire, the second book in this series. I'm left wondering who everybody really is and what their motives are. I'm looking forward to book two and seeing how it ties up book one.

The book is about a girl that evolves from a normal life into one full of fantasy stories that combine a bit of magic with a bit of romance and a lot of dangers that pop out out out of nowhere.

Great plot that kept me always wanting to start the new chapter when finishing one.

I can not say that I expected the end. It was very surprising and left a lot of questions so I can’t wait for the part 2 to appear.
