DISTURBING THEMES CONTAINED WITHIN This is a gut wrenching tale. It contains scenes of shitty things happening to decent people. They found a body in the playground of an old abandoned school—it’s all over the news. But Jordan isn’t particularly interested in reading about another unsolved murder mystery. He drove for hours to say goodbye to his dying grandfather. He hoped for laughter, he knew there would be tears, but he never expected to hear his grandfather’s mysterious deathbed confession. I like The Barns brothers a lot. Their stories are violent, ugly adventures that range in their premises, never getting stale. This was very different from their normal tales and revolved around a troubled family coming to terms with the imminent death of a loved one. Jacob was a grandfather to Jordan, our main character, who experiences all sorts of conflicting emotions on how much he knows and loves his relative. So as Jacob is dying quickly, he confesses to a crime, which is muddled with inconsistencies and it plagues his grandson as to what actually happened. And the truth slowly leaks out until everything is made clear on the very last page. Now it’s a very short book and has some decent depth to certain aspects of it, but almost everything felt way too abbreviated. I just kept thinking to myself how much better it would have all been if just developed more. That was the biggest fault here. And it really crushed any potential the ending had and the readers attachment to each character, so the overall effect was just greatly diminished. So this was not bad at all, but needed a lot more content to warrant a better rating.
It's been a while since we've heard anything from any of the brothers Barns, but the time off was well spent! This might be my favorite story out of all of them. I can't imagine how I would take it if I went to say goodbye to my grandpa, and he told me the details of the dark skeleton he's been dancing with all these years. Would I believe him? What if it's eerily similar to something happening in the news? Oh, this was a good one! I hope I don't have to wait so long until next time, but like I said - it was worth the wait. I'm just needy& greedy!
I love these brothers and there writings. Never have they published a book I haven't thoroughly enjoyed. This was no exception. A great story well written with a fantastic storyline full of twists. The Barns Brothers have a great way of telling and expressing a story that it captures you and you cannot stop reading til the end. Then after you get this fulfilled feeling of enjoyment from read it. I loved the relationship between grandfather and grandson and how the grandfather felt able to talk to his grandson over all the rest of his family and as you read along you could understand why. As I said a excellent read and if definitely recommend it.
I was literally looking for something to read tonight when I checked my email. There was an email from The Barns Brothers email list I signed up for a few months back. Immediately, I think YAY! The email tells me of their new book and it's on Booksprout. So immediately I got the arc. ( Yes,I got this as a free arc and am voluntarily leaving an unbiased review). Anyways, I'm a huge fan of the few books I have read by the brothers. I'm more of an extreme person, but the email warned that this is more of a psychological story than a bloody book. So yes I was warned. First, let's recap the story. The main character goes to visit his dying grandfather, who gives a death bed confession. He tells a tale about an abusive teacher. Yes, some of the scenes are kinda sad, but nothing too horrible in my humble opinion. I remember when teachers could spank and/ or use rulers on the hands. So it wasn't anything traumatic to me. I can't tell too much more without giving away the rest of the story. It's a quick read. And I did like it. It just wasn't my usual kind of read. But I enjoyed it. So I guess that's what counts. I gave it 3.5 stars and rounded up to 4. It was kinda a slow start. And maybe I just expected more based on who wrote it. If psychological is your thing, you would like this story

This is a brilliant read. Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believeable. Great extreme horror but not for the faint hearted or easily offended. Recommend reading.

2.5 STARS. Huge fans of The Brans Brothers, but this is properly my lest favourite. I loved the overall concept but found the story lacking. I think there was too much general dialogue between Jordan & gramps before getting to the actual point. I almost gave up then. I liked the part with the teacher & kids, & wished there had been more there. Found the ending wrapped up way too quickly to really get a creepy sense of who gramps actually was.
For a short story this was fantastic and thrilling. The characters were well written and the storyline was believable. I absolutely loved the intense and suspenseful ending. This would be a great movie!
Just my style, I love the scary, but not. TOO scary story. I. love the twisted. tale and I think I will check out more of. this author's books. I highly. recommend this!

A quick enjoyable read. The story and characters were great. Well written book. Could have been a little more scary for my tastes but overall an entertaining tale.
