A good, albeit necessarily brief, overview of the formation of the Russian state from the time of its founding through to the fall of Communism.
Seems to go into quite a bit of detail in regards to the early centuries and the submission of early Russia to the Mongols, or Tartars as they were then know, then rather skips over the various Russian Tsars and the ascension of the Romanoff's to the throne. The section on the rise and eventual fall of the Bolsheviks and Communism is quite well done; although, of course, it would take a far longer book than this one to deal with the machinations of the rise of Stalin.
A good primer to whet your appetite to delve into more specific periods.
