The messages in this book are powerful because they are the truth of God. God has used this author to present 14 stories from the four gospels in a colorful easy to understand way that will be a blessing to anyone who will read and apply these truths to their lives. Each of the scriptural vignettes are described in fleshed-out descriptions, adding a bit of imagination, that gives greater understanding of the passage. I've studied the Bible and taught Sunday school for decades, but after reading this book, I feel like I've gained deeper understanding of various details that leads to a greater grasp of the important truths to be found there. It's a small book (only 82 pages) that packs a big impact, and gives truth to the old saying, "good things come in small packages."
Encountering The Master Carpenter by Brad Simon is a devotional book that will aid you in your faith walk. This book is designed for us to get to know Jesus and to discover His will for our lives. There are fourteen devotionals based on fourteen biblical passages. The author gives his thoughts on the passages, backing up his words with scripture. Each section ends with a prayer and identical questions which are designed to help us think about what we have read and how we can apply the truths in our lives. The passages are all from the New Testament. We want and need to know the heart of Jesus. When the storms of life hit, and they will, we need to have firm foundations so we do not crumble. “When the floods of life overwhelm us, we can stand firm on the solid rock of God’s Word and experience peace, joy and stability.” The devotionals cover different topics. We hear about Jesus calming the storm and also walking on the water. We need to know that we have Jesus in our boat. “They [disciples] looked within and saw fear. But they failed to look up by faith and see God.” Fear and faith cannot exist side by side. If we have faith, we need not fear. When Jesus asks us to ‘come’, we can step out of the boat and trust Him. “He [Jesus] made prayer a priority.” If Jesus did that, then we need to as well. There is nothing too big or too small for God to handle. If something bothers us, it bothers Him. It is important to fix our eyes on Jesus. “God wants us to follow Him, not other believers.” We all have unique walks with God. My journey will look very different to your journey. Encountering The Master Carpenter is a powerful devotional revealing the heart of Jesus. It is a book that can be used in personal quiet time or in small groups with others for discussion. I received a free copy from the author. A favourable review was not required. All opinions are my own.
Simple but powerful This short devotional labour of love is a compendium of homilies or meditations taken from carefully selected episodes in chronological order from the life, death, and resurrection of Christ. The author puts the reader into the persona of the protagonists on the receiving end. The reader is thereby, confronted with the same challenges that Jesus’ contemporaries faced. In fact, each chapter ends with a call for action on the part of the reader. Scripture being what it is, the messages are transcendent and applicable for all times. The author has no problem relating them to modern culture, for instance in these two passages, one concerning the ostracized Samaritans, and the other, the adulation/feeding of the five thousand. “It was a land the Jews avoided, because of the great hatred between the Jews and Samaritans. It was greater than the feud between the Hatfields and the McCoys of America folklore, or the Montagues and the Capulets from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Julie.” “The people wanted to make Jesus their king. And why not? He provided Free Education, Free Health Care, and Free Food. It was the ultimate welfare state!”
Basically, what applies then, applies now. There is a deft intertwining of incidents like when he compares and contrasts the plights of Jairus and the woman ailing from a bleeding disorder. Good choice of book cover as well. Very apt and meaningful. All in all, a short but productive read.
