Impossible Promise

Rate this book
(The incidents in this book about what happened at baby farms are true. They are taken from actual accounts of what went on at baby farms during that period in history.)When Harmony’s sister was put in a home for troubled girls because she became pregnant out of wedlock, Harmony applied for a job at the place because of rumors of underhanded happing’s at the institution. She feared for her sister’s safety and the life of her new baby once it was born. However, even though she promised to help her sister, it seemed like an impossible promise to keep. It became even more impossible when she was determined to take her sister’s child under her own wing and leave her family forever to shelter it, in order to protect them from the shame of admitting to the illegitimate child’s existence. Harmony finds herself in a small Kansas town where a Kickapoo Indian named Tayen, befriends her and offers to help her build a house. Now, she is faced with another impossible promise she made to herself, and that was not to fall in love with the intriguing young Indian she is irresistibly drawn to.

well, I would have given 2.5 stars. it was Ok with some parts I loved, like the one explaining the Kickapoo customs and history, or the description of this horrible baby farm and the horrors done to the illegitimate children and unwed mothers.
then I could have pulled my hair, with Harmony, her ways of kissing Tayen, but also henry, then Jo, her ways of going far with Jo while claiming to love another.
I was also horrified that her throwing a living baby in the fire didn't cause her much regrets or any nightmare or knowing the relationship with her lover, didn't stop her from imagining herself happily marrying him.
I think that she was right, she didn't deserve Tayen.
absolutely not my fav read.

Horrible so horrible

I could not get past burning the babies. A completely disgusting book. No value what so ever. Shame for writing such a disturbed book. I have no idea what so ever comes past being ordered to burn a newborn. I pray I can erase the twisted images from my mind.

Good story

I was really afraid Harmony was making a mistake with Joe. Then very surprised to find out he was her half brother. Glad she realized how much she loved Tayen & that they were able to resolve their differences.

I like to read Jeanie P. Johnson's books when I can handle intense and some unpleasant things in life. They are not happy go lucky romances but are very good all the same.
