Personal Response: I loved this book because it gives so much valuable information about meerkats, and teaches the reader all about them. It uses scientific terms, but defines them and even gives the pronunciation throughout the book. The photographs were also very enjoyable, as they were large, clear, and vivid. This book has a great structure, too. It is separated into chapters that make sense chronologically, and explains everything in order.
Purposes: - ages 5-9 Read Aloud for Curricular Connections - This book could be used when teaching about deserts, as meerkats live in the Kalahari Desert. - If students are studying Africa, they could use this book to learn about one of Africa's animals. Independent Reading: - I would recommend this book to children who love animals, because it has a lot of cute pictures of the meerkats, gives tons of valuable information, and will make them feel like an expert after reading it. For Nonfiction: - This book really includes everything from maps, to diagrams, to a glossary, to resources for further learning, to photographs, to key word definition lists, etc. - It cites its sources, which appear credible. - It includes captions with every picture to clarify exactly what is being shown.
This was an interesting book with good photographs for an early reader (a little too much for a very beginning reader). I liked that it also included a page called "A Note To Adults on Sharing a Book" with some good tips on sharing books with children to promote reading and comprehension. This is part of a series called "Early Bird Nature Books" that has books about many many animals!
