This book is a good general guide to get you thinking about what you need to do to embark on survival prep. The first chapters talk about different disasters you might encounter and things you need to consider for each…and not just what you need to prep at your home or bug-out location, but how to respond in the moment when, say, a nuclear bomb hits.
I love that the author uses a ton of questions throughout the book to get the reader thinking about these different scenarios, about how to set up their home, and about how to prepare to bug out. Questions get the reader thinking about their particular situation and unique needs so they have a better chance of keeping themselves and their loved ones safe. Questioning helps the reader see angles they may not have considered but should.
As a nurse, I LOVE that the medical section did not claim to be the be-all-end-all that the reader needed to know. In fact, the author stated several times that what was written was general guidelines and the reader should take further classes so they can better respond to the medical needs of their friends and families in a time of crisis. I’ve read far too many prepper books that not only give poor medical advice but also read as if all the reader needs to know about first aid, trauma, etc., is contained within the book. I’m glad this book is different!
By the way, if you decide to purchase this audiobook and wonder what “Maxidol” is—and I wondered, even though I am a registered nurse!--it appears to be a brand name of naproxen in Canada. Note to authors: use generic names for medications in books, not country-specific brands!
The book is a survey of prepper topics. While it dives deep occasionally, if you are just at the start of your prepper journey, you will most likely need to augment this book with others to actually be able to act on the ideas discussed here. For instance, the book asks questions about your wastewater removal and clean water supply and offers ideas for you to consider about them, but to actually make changes to your current systems, you will need another book to give you the nitty-gritty of how it is done.
But that’s fine, in my book. The book would be way too long if it went into every detail about every topic. But this book does get you thinking about what you need to do and sets up core basic knowledge that you can build on.
The only thing I wasn’t wild about in this audiobook was the narrator. He didn’t know how to pronounce what I consider easy words, like hearth (pronounced HERth by the narrator) and semi (as in semi-automatic, pronounced SEE-my by the narrator). He did have an accent, but not so strong to make these mispronunciations. Interestingly, he pronounced some potentially tricky medical words just fine, like nasopharyngeal!
All in all, though, if you are new to prepping, this will probably be a great introduction to what you need to think about to protect your family when SHTF.
I received a promo code for this audiobook, but that did not affect my review.
This was an interesting book that made me think and had some good advice. However I have given it only 2 stars as much of the advice was things that would be impossible for the average person to implement. EG. Build a log cabin, drill a well, get a gun!!!! Not going to happen is it. The book is geared up for the American market so there is a lot of emphasis on guns which is just not something that I would ever be thinking about whatever the "shit hit the fan" scenario.
