Shut the front door! No really- shut it, dead bolt it, get a guard dog. Especially if you are anywhere near Apartment Six. Terrifying, violent, bad things happen in and around Apartment Six and I had a front row seat thanks to Stuart James. This book is a clever psychological thriller that checked all the boxes for me. It was terrifying and disturbing yet I could not look away! I flew through this book as I could not wait to find out what was really going on.
My heart absolutely broke for Megan ( the woman living in Apartment Six). Her life was a living hell with her abusive husband Rob who constantly tortured her with his physical and mental abuse often fueled by drugs and alcohol. I wanted to wrap my arms around her and tell her to get out while she still could. Then she met Oliver...........could Oliver be the answer to her prayers?
I must tell you this book had so many surprising twists and turns. I thought I knew right where this was going and then...nope! Totally wrong. I love that we get to see Megan's past and understand why little Meggy is perhaps so tolerant of this abuse as she had quite a troubled childhood. I literally reached a point where I threw down the book and screamed " Noooo freaking way" as there was a twist that was so shocking. Then I quickly picked up the book and said damn that was brilliant!
I loved reading the dynamics between Oliver and Megan. Oliver made me laugh with his inner dialogue he had. How far will Oliver go to win over Megan? So many deeply disturbing events unraveling in this book! A creepy vibe as I could just picture the apartment and it's not so savory neighbors. I loved this book and I can't recommend it enough!

Dissenting voice here.
I have zero tolerance for willfully stupid characters and that's exactly what Oliver was. Between his beyond doofy-ass choices, his "insta-love" relationships, and his irritating inability to rationalize through problems (often choosing to nap instead), I was beyond over his character.
But before we get into that...let's talk about the size of this dude's car trunk/cargo space. Because if he could easily fit inside what he supposedly did (no spoilers), then I want to buy the same car for my 160 pound (and still growing) St. Bernard.
The whole book was categorically goofy, and it seemed the author knew very little about police procedural and forensics. Excessive eye rolling while reading a novel is never a good sign, and I, unfortuntely, did my fair share of it during my time with Oliver, Meagan, Rob, and Claire.
Speaking of Meagan..can we talk for a moment about the way she spoke (and thought) as a child? I mean, come on! That sounded as much like a child's voice as my 44 year old voice does. I can also assure my fellow readers that adult Meagan didn't elicit any of the feelings of pity and sadness in me that she seemed to in many others. Not that I don't have sympathy for abused women...they have a piece of my heart. But something about Meagan...from her thoughts, to the way she talked and things she said, to her actions...just rubbed me the wrong way. From the start, I found her abrasive. I can't say more than that, because if you do choose to read this, you need to go in blind.
There were so many little nitpicks that bothered me...things like "noticing the change in the air" while your head is covered with a bag and tied at the neck. That's an amazing talent.
The ending...NOT surprising. Surely everybody knew who the bad guy was? Surely. I don't understand how it could be missed. The clues were running rampant throughout the story.
The one thing I believe the author got right was the relationship between the abuser and the abused. A family member of mine died at the hands of her husband...we had a front row seat to the horrors. No matter what we did, nothing saved her. My heart is still broken today, and it always will be. For that reason, I gave this book an extra star. The abuse, and the reactions to the abuse, felt mostly authentic.
Like I mentioned earlier, I'm the odd man out on this one...there are a ton of 5-star reviews. Check those out and see if this could be a winner for you. Chances are, it will be. For me? It fell very flat.

Stuart James sets a very raw and emotive dark deep premise that will make many readers feel all kinds of emotions.
Make no bones about it, abuse in any form is totally not acceptable, whether subtle, emotional or physical. But Meagan grows up in an abusive family environment where she learns that men control and punish.
It’s horrendous to think this goes on.....but fact.
The author makes a good call when he heads chapters as Before the phone call” then present day.
It made it very easy as a reader to follow.
No matter what was going on around me this book was my main focus.
There are a few nail biting tense moments, many OMG moments and thoughts on “where is this author leading me?”
3/4 of the way through I realised there is going to be a big sting , and wow did I feel it.
I would never have guessed this ending.
I keep my eye on this authors work because he never ceases to surprise me. I eagerly await his releases.when such good books are written like this, sinister and oh so deep, I just wonder what lurks in the authors subconsciousness.
Whatever his next books topic is, I’m here for it.

A tense, clever psychological thriller
Its best to mention this book deals with domestic abuse, physical and mental and both feature throughout the book
Oliver is stunned when his girlfriend leaves him, he has a good life in a comfy job and a nice flat in Chelsea, he is bereft.....until he bumps into Meghan on a packed Underground station platform, suddenly all thoughts of Claire disappear as he ‘falls for’ her
But who is she?what does she want? and can she be believed? Oliver thinks so and feel he could do anything for her’, something he will live to regret for the rest of the book......
The book goes from the past to the present as it charts Meghan’s previous life to the ‘now’ and both parts fit together and are easy to follow, in fact the whole book is written in an easy style although as mentioned the subject matter sometimes is harrowing, disturbing and feels very real
The crux of the story had me fooled and right up until the end I wasn’t sure what would happen or indeed why it was happening and then you find out and its a deffo ‘WOW’ moment!
The characters were unlikeable but meant to be and did their parts very very well
A book that really was hard to put down as wanted to find out what it was ‘all about’ and you will too
A good if chilling read with an easy to follow but not easy to guess storyline

One of the worst thrillers I’ve read. Definitely up there with Kepnes’ Hidden Bodies. The plot was so dumb. The characters were annoying. The red flags were already there at the beginning and I chose to ignore them!

This was an absolute complete thrillathon where every chapter had something new to make me wonder what more the author Stuart James had in his bag of tricks.
Meagan was in an abusive relationship. She met Oliver, they liked each other, so she asked Oliver for a huge favor…
My first book by Stuart James, and he was bloody brilliant. Man, the things he came out with, the scenes he wrote, I never could have predicted. And here I thought I have read it all. Never had I been so glad to be pitched into a storm where the subplots kept me hopping with the intense suspense.
The story was exciting and kept me on the edge, filled with misdirections. I thought I knew what the author would write, I would grow comfortable watching the scene unfurl, then BAM…. I would be hit by a twist. My heart rate too would go up and down with it. A massive workout from the couch.
I wished I could write the things I want to say but it would be a spoiler. But rest assured, the book was delicious, just perfect to be my breakfast read. What a way to start my day.

Apartment Six is Stuart James’s fourth psychological thriller with a substantial ol’ helping of horror thrown in for good measure. The call handlers working for the emergency services are a little more alarmed than usual when they receive a 999 call from what sound to be a young girl claiming her mother has been hurt. This little girl was five year old Meagan and she had sadly witnessed her mothers murder at the hands of her abusive, controlling and narcissistic father. Unfortunately, this then transfers, in later years, to Meagan’s own marriage with volatile, capricious husband, Rob, and faced an onslaught of both physical and emotional abuse from him on the daily. Enter Oliver a guy so different from Rob that it's not even funny and it doesn't take long for a tight bond, closely followed by a relationship, to manifest. However, it is unlikely to end well given she is cheating on her husband.
As someone who has suffered from verbal abuse, this was a hard-hitting, powerful and emotionally resonant read for me. This is a book that highlights just how difficult it is to fully escape your past; you can run to the ends of the earth and still feel the influence it has over you. From the get-go, you are thrown in at the deep end and at no point during the entirety of the story did my level of engagement wane. This is a page-turner with plenty of thrills and twists, an interesting cast of characters and an exploration of heavy topics such as domestic abuse. Highly recommended. The story begins with five year old Meagan hiding in a cupboard whilst on the phone to the emergency services. Her mother, having suffered at the hands of her abusive husband lies motionless on the floor.
Moving forward 20 years and Meagan is in an abusive relationship herself. Totally worn down by her life and not able to see a way out, whilst on her commute to work, she meets Oliver, an ordinary young guy working as a PA in a lawyers office.
Oliver, for his part, is rather smitten with Meagan and when she asks a favour of him, he agrees, however he has no idea of the implications his decision will have. Oliver seems rather naïve and I found him a little frustrating at times.
Set in two timelines of the present time and 20 years before, the story flows seamlessly between the two. Apartment 6 is a tense and addictive story. Poor Meagan; as a child she watched her father torment her mother, and now as an adult she has been drawn to the same type of man.
Stuart James certainly knows how to rack up the tension. Both timelines were as suspenseful as each other with some totally unlikeable characters. I don’t want to say much about the plot because it would so easy to get into spoiler territory. I must admit I did find the level of physical and mental abuse unrelenting throughout, particularly in the ‘before’ years – this part of the storyline affected me more because Meagan’s mother was trying to hide it from her daughter and Meagan was too young to really understand what was happening. It made me feel quite uncomfortable at times.
This is such a twisted story but very well crafted – it certainly took me by surprise and went in a direction that I wasn’t expecting.
If you are uncomfortable with domestic abuse then maybe this is not the book for you but if you want a well written, chilling and twisted read then I definitely recommend it!

THE ULTIMATE THRILLER!
Not only was this probably the most disturbing thriller I have ever read but pretty much all of the characters are also disturbing , deranged, psychotic, and completely unhinged! That's what makes this book the ultimate thriller! Truly unsettling and utterly unputdownable, literally a page in and my kindle did not leave my hands again until I finished that breathtaking last page. So well written. Stuart James-please-keep the books coming!!! And quickly!!!!

This book didn't work for me...I found the story very disjointed and with too many plot holes for me to overlook.
It certainly has a creepy and threatening quality. There are some terrifying descriptions of domestic abuse that evoked a lot of feeling in me but this didn't then translate into the characters / main narrative.
It all made sense in the end but it was too late by then as I didn't feel anything for the characters and still felt quite perplexed.
An uncomfortable read that left me cold.

Ever since I read Turn The Other Way by Stuart James I’ve been eagerly anticipating his latest crime thriller Apartment Six and it’s finally here! Was it worth the wait? It’s a ‘hell yes’ with bells on! Fans of the author will be thrilled to know Apartment Six has his trademark stamped through it, horror! From the off the reader experiences a strong feeling of fear and dread that only intensifies as the story progresses. Part domestic thriller, part crime thriller Apartment Six is a tale of manipulation, and coercion, and the darker side of human behaviour.
Poor Meagan hasn’t had the best of life’s, at five-years-old her mother was murdered by her abusive father, fast forward to the present and life is far from perfect as Meagan appears to be repeating history, she’s married into an abusive relationship, her life is a living hell as she faces a barrage of verbal and physical abuse on a daily basis. Then like a ray of sunshine Oliver enters her life, he’s the complete opposite of her husband, and they strike up a relationship, that begins innocently, but ends in murder. I found most of the characters beyond ‘unlikable’ now normally that can spoil the read for me, but thankfully this wasn’t the case here.
The story is told in the present with flashbacks to Meagan’s past, this is done carefully enough to compel rather than confuse the reader. It’s these chapters that explain the events that have shaped Meagan’s character, these chapters make for an uncomfortable read, but at the same time it’s these chapters that add weight to the simmering tension that’s bubbling away. Stuart James doesn’t do things by half, as we are privy to Meagan’s life we are only to aware of the domestic abuse she suffers, it was disconcerting to watch these scenes unfold, but it also goes along way to explaining some of her choices.
Apartment Six starts out as one of those ‘ok’ reads, but then the authors twisted and devious imagination comes into play, which completely threw me, the plot took a seriously twisted turn that I definitely didn’t see coming! I had so many niggling questions about Meagan’s story, but once I reached the ending everything became clear and I finished this book with a hugely satisfying sigh. Brilliantly written and so cleverly plotted, I ended up loving Apartment Six, its sinister, dark and seriously twisted, just how I like my books! Highly recommended.

Stuart James doesn’t do things by half, as we are privy to Meagan’s life we are only to aware of the domestic abuse she suffers, it was disconcerting to watch these scenes unfold, but it also goes along way to explaining some of her choices.
Apartment Six starts out as one of those ‘ok’ reads, but then the authors twisted and devious imagination comes into play, which completely threw me, the plot took a seriously twisted turn that I definitely didn’t see coming! I had so many niggling questions about Meagan’s story, but once I reached the ending everything became clear and I finished this book with a hugely satisfying sigh. Brilliantly written and so cleverly plotted, I ended up loving Apartment Six, its sinister, dark and seriously twisted, just how I like my books! Highly recommended.

Wow, this man can terrify the life out of me. The whole book I felt on edge and wound up so tight. I was flinching at some of the more torturous scenes. Man, this book is dark but it’s the kind of book I (so perversely) love!
The second foray with Mr James and it is safe to say I will read anything he writes. It just blows me away! This time I had kinda guessed the “twist” so to speak but I didn’t care because when the characters did it was shocking. I have so many unanswered questions though about this book!!! I can not settle and I think I need a shower to scrub the darkness and insanity off!!
This book reminded me of a film, but I can’t say what film because as it will ruin it for you, all I will say it has trains and a robbery 🤣 try guessing it from that…no more clues!
Ok, so Apartment 6, is so incredibly tense! You have a then and now scenario (I mean who doesn’t love these!), it is 20 years before the phone call and present day. What I will say, don’t believe everything you read! I was so shocked with the past but once I had read that, I knew where we were going on this adventure. Characters are made into pawns in a chess match and it’s not until that last move they realise it’s checkmate!
Meagan, man she has not had the easiest of upbringings with her mum and dad, god did my heartbreak for her. It was all the bad words you can think of, horrifying, dark, terrifying…words I use on repeat!
In the present day, we catch up with her and it seems like history is repeating itself but this time there is Oliver. Poor, naive Oliver, obsessed and in love, but again we don’t know him as well as we like to think! I do love how he doesn’t bat an eyelid too much when he discovers what is being asked of him!!! Wake up! I love the surprise after surprise. It’s easy to settle into this book thinking you know everything because let me tell you…you don’t! What you have been told may not necessarily be the truth..and I freaking loved it!
I think I need a light and fluffy after devouring that book! It has shocked me to the core and chilled my bones! If this was a movie, so many scenes would make me want to look away, and for god sake don’t read the bit about guinea pigs!!! This book is a brutal one, it’s not for the faint-hearted but it’s one to sink your teeth into and swear a lot at the kindle!
Another winner by Mr James, I need the time to go back and read his other two books. Well, once I have unwound my hand from the kindle as it kinda aches now from clenching it so tight!!

The story alternates between past and present so we get to see what life was like for Meagan as a 5 year old as well as in present day. Sadly things don’t seem to have got much better.
The opening of this book pulled on my heart strings. It’s obvious Meagan has been subjected to see things that no child should ever see. In her adult life she finds herself a victim of domestic abuse and I was willing her to get out of the toxic relationship.
Oliver is the total opposite of Rob, Meagan’s husband. You can see from the off that he is one of the world’s nice guys. Someone decent and he is instantly drawn to Meagan.
A story line that features domestic abuse, will always make for some uncomfortable reading, the author does it in a way though that will have you gripped to every page and feeling empathy for the victim whilst raging against the perpetrators.

A chilling but thrilling read that is a must for fans of psychological thrillers.

Not great
This book I found really hard to read. The story with Meghan and Oliver escalates at a pace which is just not believable and the writing itself wasn't great. The language used at points was almost childlike and as a result hounding believe in the characters at all which is big for me in a book. I honestly kept going as I thought some kind of massive u turn would happen; like it was a bit of a joke or precursor to a bigger story. I found it an odd read.

This was a haunting tale of domestic abuse. Meagan was just five years old when her mother was murdered by her father. Now she finds herself stuck in an abusive marriage. This gets seriously twisted when she meets Oliver who is willing to do anything to help her. Nail bitting suspense right to the end that I never saw coming. Couldn't turn the pages fast enough.

I was hooked from start to the incredible gasp inducing ending. Brilliant.

This was definitely worth the read. It kept me guessing till the end. There was a nice summation which I was thankful for because I hadn't figured out just what had happened. I read so much that it's rare when an author surprises me or keeps me guessing, so thank you, Stuart James.

Wow another fantastic book from this author. Having read his previous books thus by far was his best so far. Twisty.. What an ending!! Unputdownable..got this today and finished it today as well.. Had to know what was going to happen. Can't wait for the next from him..he gets better and better.

What rubbish. A waste of money and reading time. The story went from bad to ridiculous, the characters were unlikeable and it read like a school essay at times. The repeated use of names rather than pronouns was very annoying.

This was a very intense psychological thriller. The characters weren't altogether likable ones, but the author did such a great job at building the tension that I could not look away from this train wreck. The story goes back and forth between Oliver and Meagan in the present to Meagan twenty years ago and her childhood with her abusive father. There were some amazing twists and turns in this story. I honestly thought that this would be a bit predictable in the beginning. This was NOT predictable at all. This was such a page turner. Great read.

Superb. That’s exactly what this read was. From start to finish I couldn’t read this fast enough. The author sucks you in straightaway. The story is told in the past and in the present. As the topic is domestic abuse it isn’t a story for everyone. It’s a fast paced gripping read that had me on the edge of my seat. This is definitely going to be one of my top reads this year. Yet another fantastic read from this author and I’m already looking forward to reading more from him.

Okay book
Moreso on a 3.5 to 3.8 rating scale. I can dig the plot twist in the story. I also enjoyed the backstory more than the present story, overall it was a good book. Some things were unrealistic that got annoying at times.

This was a book with a good premise but when reading I felt like it had been done before and this book brought very little new to the table.
The main character, Oliver, was stupid. Just an idiot. And I had no patience for him.
It wasn’t a terrible book and I did enjoy bits of it, including how the characters met. But the rest of it was just meh.

After reading Turn The Other way by Stuart I have been dying to sink my teeth into this beauty. I cannot begin to tell you how flipping gripping and pulse racing this story is. Talk about keeping you on the edge of your seat this is one hell of a nail biter. I thought I was going to have a heart attack LOL
In this story we meet Meagan who I couldn’t help but empathise with has we follow the story that is written from two different time lines alternating from the past and the present. We see the terror what Meagan goes through when she is 5. Then finds herself a victim in an abusive relationship has an adult. With each chapter leaving you wanting more. I couldn’t read this fast enough wanting to know what was going to happen next. The author takes you on a white knuckle ride has we live through Meagan’s journey.
So I am a quarter of the way through and the author throws me totally of track with a corker of a twist. What an OMG moment that was. There I am shouting at my kindle! From that moment the plot thickens and the tension mounts up.
Do be warned there are some dark, jaw dropping, uncomfortable scenes. But you all know me….the darker the better.This is one intense story. Not forgetting the OMG ending, I did not see that coming at all!
This story absolutely wowed me and I cannot recommend it enough. Giving it all the stars.
