Masks

Rate this book
Chloe's identical twin sister Zoe wants a favor. She needs Chloe to dress up in her work clothes and meet an important client, pretending to be her. There's just one problem. Zoe isn't an investment banker as she's led everyone to believe - she's a dominatrix and her work clothes include a leather bustier, thigh-high boots and a feathered mask. There are three rules, according to Zoe - don't lose control of the situation, don't have sex with the client, and never take off the mask.

Shy, retiring Chloe has no idea how to go about dominating anyone. But that won't be a problem for long because the "client," Mark Jacobs, is a hot alpha male in a black leather mask of his own who prefers to take the lead when it comes to sex.

Soon Chloe is breaking all the rules for one night of forbidden passion but when she decides to take off her mask and asks Mark to do the same, she has no idea that the black leather he wears conceals a dark secret that may change her life forever.

Wow, this book was a nice surprise! I'm not going to write a plot summary because the publisher's description pretty much says it all. Well, Mark's secret isn't dark at all, but we all know how some publishers tend to be melodramatic sometimes...

Overall, this was very good for a short story. Mark and Chloe were very likable, the plot was interesting and not too complicated, and the love scenes were sexy, steamy and sweet. Yes, I said sweet, which could be strange considering the book's premise and the BDSM scenario, but I'm not crazy here. ;)

“You don’t ever have to be scared of me.” His deep voice was caught somewhere between sorrow and tenderness. “I’ll never, ever hurt you.”
I stumbled across this novella when I was on the Ellora’s Cave website, browsing through their Free Reads. The truth is that I wasn’t expecting much: I’d never heard of this author before and, not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but there must be some reason it’s free … right? However, the heroine appealed to me – shy, wallflower-type (I’m so predictable) – and I had nothing to lose, so I figured why not? Turns out, it was a good choice to make! Masks ended up being a surprisingly enjoyable and sizzling story.

Chloe and Zoe are twin sisters, but basically complete opposites. Though they’re identical twins, they show that it really is how you present and carry yourself that makes a difference. Zoe always attracts attention and is thought of as beautiful. She is a dominatrix, dresses in sexy outfits, wears makeup, likes nice things, is a great flirt, etc., while Chloe … is none of these things and is more comfortable fading into the background. She’s a first-grade teacher, wears simple clothing, always has her hair in a ponytail, and clams up every time she’s around the opposite sex.

When Zoe hurts her ankle, she begs Chloe to take her place and see the client she has scheduled for that evening. Zoe’s “cover job” is that of an investment banker, so Chloe is still reeling from learning that her sister is actually a dominatrix; she can’t even begin to process the idea of taking over her sister’s Mistress Sensua role for the night!

Before she knows it, Chloe finds herself outfitted in dominatrix gear ready to go and at her sister’s “workplace” waiting for the night’s client, Mark. The only words of wisdom her sister gives her before pushing her out the door are three rules: (1) stay in control of the encounter; (2) don’t have sex with the client; and (3) don’t take off the mask. Chloe is shy and has problems being forward or even flirting with guys – so how in hell is she going to pull off a dominatrix act?! … You’ll have to read the story to find out.

Something I really appreciated was that throughout, Chloe remains Chloe: we’re not given Dr. Jekyll and Hyde, with the shy wallflower becoming a bombshell sexpot nympho just so the author can give us good sex scenes. The obligatory conflict at the end felt a little forced, but expectations determine enjoyment and I didn’t go into this thinking I would get a terrific and consistently realistic or logical plot. I also want to clarify that for those of you who aren’t interested in male sub stories, this isn’t one of them.

Masks is a short story even by novella standards (51pgs), yet it was still able to pack in everything I would want in a light but sexy erotica: a relatable and likable heroine, a seductive and more-than-he-seems hero, hot sex scenes, surprising humor, and a pretty believable attempt at showing us that the hero and heroine are compatible outside of the bedroom as well as in.

The erotica aspect provided great variety: a little bondage, some female-pleasure-focused love-making, and really spicy and explicit dirty talking (fan, please!). For serious BDSM fans, you probably won’t think this story qualifies; Mark ties Chloe up for a bit, but that’s it – basically just enough to add some nice spice for us more boring and usually vanilla readers.

On a purchasing note, this story is currently available for free on the Ellora’s Cave website. Most EC stories are (obviously) not free, so for those of you who enjoy them I suggest that you check their website first. I’ve learned to do that whenever I’m going to buy one of their eBooks, because their prices are almost always cheaper than the list price or those you’ll find anywhere else (Google eBooks, Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble Nook, etc.).

{ One of My Favorite Quotes }
“You’re a dominatrix and you want me to switch with you to meet one of your clients?”

“Well, it’s hard to dominate anyone with a twisted ankle.” Zoe sounded grumpy. “I mean, how can I walk all over this guy with an ice pack on my leg? My stupid ankle is so swollen – it probably won’t even fit into my thigh-high boots, which was what I was planning on wearing.”

“Thigh-high boots? Walk all over him?” Chloe felt faint. Could her twin sister really be serious?

Pure fantasy, and an excellent one, too. I'm not sure I'd call it erotica -- maybe erotic-y? Anyway, just about perfect for a romance reader who craves a little hot and spicy, (and there's some sweet, too) with the heat level coming more from the exciting situation than from anything the characters actually do. It's a short, quick read but has everything a story needs, and how many free ebooks can you say that about. Will definitely look for this author again.

When Chloes twin sister Zoe asks her to swap places for the night for a business meeting she thinks that it will just be as an investement banker, that is however, until Zoe reveals a surprising secret, she is no investment banker but a dominatrix and she has a special client picked out, just for Chloe!

It is hard to review a book that is this short, this was a small novella, but what I did read I liked! Within the space of the story I thought you could see the pull between the two main characters of Chloe and Mark which added a little extra something to HOTNESS of the book! And this book was hot, I loved it a love a little bondage and dirty talk and although this was really only very light bondage it still got the juices going!

So a great sexy little read that has got me wanting to read more of Evangeline Anderson's work

Favourite Quotes:

How was she supposed to handle this? How was she supposed to dominate this giant when she was shaking in her thingh-high boots?

This is my first read by Evangeline Anderson - and I only stumbled upon it because it was a free read available at Amazon.

It was only a short story but had a good measure of sex and storyline. Evangeline can definitely write a nice and hot sex scene.

My review contains spoilers and they're mostly my thoughts as I went with the book...

Masks was my 1st try of Evangeline Anderson and I think it was a sweet novella. The problem, if that’s what I can call it, was the character of Zoe who was pretty annoying. Also, it being a novella, I felt things were a bit rushed. Other than that, I liked it and EA’s writing style.

Chloe and Zoe are identical twins. Whereas Chloe is the studious, shy and a bit ‘socially inept’, Zoe is… let’s just say she’s total opposite of her twin. I found her really annoying because when they recall one of their past adventures (or misadventures) where Chloe did a ‘favor’ to Zoe, it gave me the distinct impression that Zoe would use the trusting Chloe to get her way and not really thinking of what would happen to her. Maybe Chloe should’ve stand her ground a bit, which she didn’t then, not even now when Zoe was wheedling her into doing something Chloe would’ve never done in her life. The adventurous Zoe is a female dom who goes by the name of Mistress Sensua (I couldn’t help laughing at the name lol) and works in some local BDSM club. Her parents of course know nothing about it; neither did Chloe up until now, thinking she’s an investment banker. When she asks Chloe to do her a favor, again, she is baffled by Zoe’s admission. This certainly explains her lavish lifestyle in comparison to school teacher Chloe’s one bedroom apartment. Anyway, what Zoe wants Chloe to do is take her place for one evening for a ‘client’ she can’t lose in any way, sporting a twisted ankle. She can’t possibly walk in leather high heeled boots with this, can she? Zoe gives Chloe 3 rules: always take the lead no matter what, no sex and no taking off the mask. While Chloe is still baffled and a bit dazed from all these, Zoe packs her up in her own tight leather dresses and a mask and sends her off to her destination.

When she’s in there, Chloe begins to get a hold of the trouble she’s in. She knows NOTHING about being a dom and the man who came to her a few minutes ago is tall and big; a muscular guy. How on earth she’s going to ‘dominate’ this guy? Thanks to her twin, again, she’s into another mess! The man, Mark, is dressed well but he’s also wearing a mask, which covers most of his face except his piercing blue eyes, his nose and mouth. Anyway, Chloe decides since she’s into it now, there’s no turning back, so she tries to er… take charge, hoping that’s what Zoe would do and asks Mark to ‘assume’ his position!

The 1st scenes of the BDSM play or whatever they were trying to do were kinda funny since neither Mark, nor Chloe knew anything of BDSM lifestyle in that sense. I really liked their talks. Rules are made to be broken and soon Chloe found herself breaking those, at least the first 2 rules and loving it to bits, thanks to Mark. I loved the love scenes. Then came the time when she was willing to give this a try since none of her first dates has ever gone this good. Chloe breaks rule no. 3 and takes off her mask but Mark warns her that she might not like what’s inside his mask… Gotta tell you I wasn’t expecting what Chloe found but I liked how she handled the situation.

But then, trouble begins with a misunderstanding soon enough… Of course everything was solved in the end, and I was smiling, because as I mentioned before, it was sweet. Mark was definitely a sweet guy. 3.75 stars. I would’ve rated it better if I had a few more chapters/pages of their relationship.

“Masks” is a free installment of about 4 chapters. It can still be downloaded free from allromanceebooks.

Chloe and Zoe are identical twins but that's about where it ends. Whereas Zoe is adventerous and living out loud, Chloe is a first grade teacher, who leaves a quiet and modest life. Zoe believes she is boring, so she concocts this scheme to get Chloe to change places with her. Zoe asks Chloe to fill in for at her job but she staunchly refuses but Zoe eventually wears her down and Chloe agrees. Until Zoe reveals to her twin exactly what she does for a living.

Zoe just confessed to her twin that she is not an investment banker, she is a Dominatrix. Lawd Chloe almost passed out because all this time she believed her sister to be doing some big demanding job and this never ever crossed her mind. Zoe's ankle is messed up badly so she can go to her client, so she asks her sister to take her place. Chloe reluctantly agrees to it, the shy and wallflower sister is about to assume a role whereas never in her wildest dreams, she could have come up with that. Chloe will now become Mistress Sensua for a night and she has no idea what she is doing.

Mark Jacobs is the client Chloe will be meeting and supposedly dominating, now that they are face to face with their masks on. The supposedly Dominatrix is about to find herself dominated and for once in her life Chloe will happily submit under the masterful hands, mouth and body to Master Mark. But as masterful as Mark is, he has secrets of his own also but the masks help him to become someone else too if only for one night.

Mark and Chloe's story is beautiful and it has an interesting twist to it. The surprising thing is the story is less that 60 pages but it reads as a complete book of 150 pages or more. Wonderfully written, you get two fully fleshed out characters which is really hard to do especially with a short story. It is incredibly sexy and makes you definitely want your very own Mark Jacobs that is for sure. Chloe will have you rooting for her to come into her own and completely abandoned her wall flower persona.

This is a free read on Amazon and I encourage everyone to read it because you will not be disappointed. This is my first book by author Evangeline Anderson but I have another book on my Kindle by her that I will soon be reading.

Chloe and Zoe may be twins, but they couldn't be more different. Zoe is outgoing, adventurous, lives a life of luxury and seems to have no problem finding men to be with. Chloe is shy, reserved, likes her humble lifestyle and her teaching job. She may not admit it out loud, but she's always felt invisible, living in her glamorous sister's shadow.

When Zoe asks her for a favor to meet with a client and pretend to be her, there is just one small problem – Zoe isn't an investment banker. She's a Dominatrix. Before she knows what's happening, Zoe has given Chloe a complete makeover – mousey pony tail gone – check, sexy makeup – check, leather bustier, mini skirt and thigh high stiletto boots – check, mask adorned with colorful feathers – check. Pressed for time, she's shuffled out the door and heading towards Zoe's office to meet her client, Mark Jacobs. The job shouldn't be too difficult if she's the one giving orders, and she only has to follow three rules: One – Don't lose control, Two – Don't ever have sex with the client and Three – Don't take off the mask.

Of course things don't go quite as planned and Chloe soon finds herself in a role reversal with Mark in charge. Well, there went rule number one :)

I actually liked this short story. There were two twists I wasn't anticipating, so I like a little surprise. Chloe found a side of herself she never knew was there, or perhaps it just took the right man to bring it out of her. Mark could never find the type of woman he was looking for (that's part of the secret of this story), but Chloe's big heart comes through where it counted the most. Mark was highly skilled *cough* and um, very well endowed. Of course there's drama when another secret is revealed and I understood why she felt betrayed. Luckily Mark knows all the right words to say and they both get their HEA.

There isn't really any BDSM play per se in this story, just hot seduction and a bit of kink involving dirty talk, being tied to a St Andrews Cross and a bit of tying down.

This book is still free on Amazon, as well as on All Romance.

What a surprisingly good, sexy, sweet, and short read!

The publisher blurb did a great job and letting readers know what they're in for in this short novella length story, so I'm not going to go into any recapping. One main thing I do want to point out is that readers may *assume* they're going to get a little BDSM with the disclosure of a domme, but you really don't. It's more like very light bondage. Instead, the newbie-seducers (aka. the hero and heroine on a blind-datish set up) almost take on the persona's of a couple in a D/s relationship -- the masks helping them to easily relinquish and demand control.

Character driven readers should find that the real enjoyment and seduction comes from the quick and heavy attraction between the hero and heroine who may wear masks to hide their identities, but what's said and experienced between them is real and heart felt. Evangeline did a great job at making the characters words and actions seem very believable -- especially in such a short amount of time. I could definitely feel the magnetic attraction between these two.

The hero sure does know how to graphically talk sexy and exude alpha qualities, but there's also a deep sense of vulnerability and self-consciousness on his part. The heroine is just as believable in her role of being a little unsure of what to do, leaving her to easily submit to Mark's demands. And it's hot when she does! There's great foreplay and smexin' scenes in this little read.

When they make the decision to reveal themselves to one another, the twist of the story is finally revealed (way too spoilerish for me to spill on the what). The path gets just a little bumpy for the two before a great romantic closure.

This is the first Evangeline Anderson book I've read and it certainly won't be the last! I've been hearing great things about her work and if this short, sexy novella is any indication of what to expect with other works, I think I should be nice and happy!

Re-Read August 2017: 6 years after my first read. For an erotic novella quite nice. - 4 stars

english review:

For a short story (slightly longer than normal) "Masks" is not bad, quite the opposite, I liked the Story. "Masks" is erotic and romantic, just as I like it. The shy school teacher Chloe is persuaded by her twin sister to substitute her in her job, but not at a office job like Chloe assumed in the beginning, but as a dominatrix! Chloe reluctantly agrees and soon finds herself in a sexy leather outfit face to face to an attractive masked man, the three rules of her sister in mind: First: Never lose control. Second: No sex. Third: Always wear the mask. I thought that "Masks" was really good, although I normally do not like light BDSM at all, but all in all the story is less erotic than the summary suggests. The only criticism would be that the characterization of Mark, the protagonist, was sometimes a bit inconsistent.

Meh, more of a 2.5. I skimmed a lot, mostly because the whole premise made my skin crawl.

So ok, the best way to describe the premise is, you have a good twin/bad twin set-up. The bad twin keeps conning the good twin into switching places. You know... I'd move. To another city, maybe even another state. I dislike manipulative people and sister dear was v. manipulative.

She's also a dominatrix. Gets paid well to whip guys into shape. Conns sister into switching places (something that never works out well for sister, btw, so I guess she's also TSTL). Sister - an elementary school teacher - reluctantly goes along with it. It's a set-up. A blind date. With whips and chains. o_O. Fortunately for suck-er-sibling, H is not actually into that sort of thing, so other than scaring her good, and giving her a really good time, she gets off relatively unscathed - until H says her real name and the game is over. She bolts, won't speak to twin for two weeks (two weeks? I'd have changed my phone number and MOVED. Sorry sis, there are limits to sisterly love). Eventually, H approaches her at work(!), and they work out a few things. Oh, and she decides after this debacle she needs to keep up with sis more. HELL NO! She might decide to swap places *again*!!

***Some spoilers below**

So this was a short, hot story that I couldn't put down. The characters were great and well developed for such a short story. I loved the twin aspect and switching places. It was an interesting twist of events when Chloe found out what her sister did for a living and decided to help her all the same.

The sex scene was one of the hottest I've read in awhile. I love, love, loved every raw, sexy bit of it. I also enjoyed the daring new things Chloe tried and the caring way Mark talked to her.

Mark, wasn't he just hot? I loved the way he was super muscular, but still a geek at heart, and despite the accident he had, I was glad Chloe accepted him and thought he was still handsome.

I wasn't sure what to think when things went a little wrong. I know Chloe had to be super upset with the situation, but who wouldn't be honestly? I'm just glad that they found a way to move past the incident and ended up together. I guess I'm a sucker for a love story, especially if there's hot, kinky sex involved =D

I think everybodey needs to give this a quick read. It'll be worth your time!

A simple favor turns into an unforgetable night.

Chloe is asked by her twin sister Zoe to switch with her. All she has to do is pretend to be her for this important client. The kicker is Zoe is a dominatrix and Chloe is a shy teacher who is about as opposite from her sister as can be.

Zoe gives her three rules to follow:
Stay in control,
never have sex with a client,
and never take off the mask

Well lets just say some rules are meant to be broken. There is a little Alpha male, a bit of bondage and an unforgetable experience for little ol' Chloe. Will this hott night end with only memories or can Mark convince Chloe to take a chanch?

Great little quick story. Another freebie that left me happy and wanting more. Writing and characters were wonderful and intimate scenes were sexy and not overdone.

*This will also be my review on Amazon.

This was a VERY short erotic read. I gave it 4 stars though due to the "aww" factor. Erotica is what it is but for me, I need some heart or it just does'nt vibe. Zoe and Chloe are twins who could'nt be any more opposite in personality and life style. It's not until Zoe asks her sister for a favor, does Chloe realize jus how opposite they really are. Zoe's not in banking as sis always believed, she's a dominatrix and nursing a hurt ankle. There is a very special "client" Zoe can't risk losing so it's time to trade places.

Again, this was a very short read so I can't say there was alot of build up. The sex scenes were definately hot and well written. It was how the storyline developed afterwards that was most endearing to me. I loved the little twist and Mark in general. He was delish.

I truly liked this book. The MCs were great. But the fact that Chloe didn't call out her sister's reckless actions bothered me. Imagine the chaos if everything had gone wrong; we would have a completely different story then.

Though the story ended on a positive note, I would have enjoyed an epilogue with Chloe and Mark together. And I sure as hell agree that the "sister day" was absolutely required.

This is a short erotic read. It was decent enough if not a little cheesy at times. It did have a mini plot but was mostly fluff. Very erotic! ;) The characters were well written, but since it was so short, there wasn't a lot of build up. I liked Mark and the ending was sweet!

"4.5" Masks is a stand-alone, erotic, contemporary romance novelette. Chloe is a shy, retiring, elementary school teacher who hasn’t had much luck when it comes to dating. She’s always felt like she’s lived in the shadow of her identical twin sister, Zoe, who she views as far more elegant and outgoing. Despite knowing that Zoe is adventurous, Chloe is shocked when her sister confesses that she’s a dominatrix. An injured Zoe wants Chloe to switch places with her for one night to service an important client. Zoe says it will be easy as long as she follows three rules: Don’t lose control of the situation, don’t have sex with the client, and don’t ever take off the mask she’ll be wearing. Chloe isn’t sure how she got talked into such a harebrained scheme, but next thing she knows she’s answering the door of Zoe’s townhouse to find a tall, muscular man in a sexy leather mask who makes her forget everything Zoe told her. Soon Chloe discovers that Mark is anything but the submissive she’d been led to believe he was. Instead he’s an alpha who quickly takes over the scene, sending Chloe into paroxysms of lust that scramble her brain. Before the night is over, she’s broken the first two rules, but she’s had the most memorable sex of her life and found that she and Mark actually have a lot in common. She decides to throw the final rule out the window, too, and take off their masks, but little does she know that both Mark and his mask are hiding secrets that could ruin her budding feelings for him.

Masks has been on my TBR pile for a long time, and I’m glad that I finally got around to reading it. It wasn’t exactly a perfect story. I admit Chloe warming up so quickly to having sex with a complete stranger was a little odd for me, but I was willing to go with the flow. I decided that she could have been trusting her sister’s judgment, since Zoe had interviewed Mark ahead of time, not to mention, her own body’s responses to him. And Mark is admittedly ooooh, soooo sexy! He’s an alpha cinnamon roll hero who is sweet and gentle while taking charge, a delightful dirty talker, and a scrumptiously skillful lover. Then he reveals why he’s wearing the mask and later why he agreed to this scenario in the first place, both of which make him very sympathetic. And on top of that he’s a wealthy geek. Oh, be still my heart!:-) I don’t think anyone could have written a more perfect hero for me if they tried. [Swoon] I liked Chloe, too. She’s sweet and awkward, totally out of her element trying to pretend to be a dominatrix, so it was probably a good thing that Mark quickly put her out of her misery so to speak. Initially she’s very accepting of Mark. However, when she finds out how he ended up there, she just completely cuts him off at the knees. This is where I would have liked to see the author explain a little better why Chloe felt the way she did. If there had been more background, I might have understood her reaction, but with what little was given, it felt a bit over-the-top for the circumstances, especially since she and Mark had experienced such a deep, visceral connection in just a few hours. It wasn’t a deal-breaker for me, though, because it gave Mark an opportunity to do a little more wooing. I’m glad that Chloe finally allowed him to explain and gave him another chance. Otherwise, I would have thought she’d completely lost her mind to give up a guy like him.:-D So, overall, Masks was a deliciously steamy little nugget of a tale that really hit the spot. It was my first read by Evangeline Anderson, but it’s left me very open to trying more of her works.

Note: This book contains explicit language and sexual situations. However, for a story featuring dominatrix garb and a BDSM dungeon, the content is pretty tame, with only one relatively mild scene of bondage and a finger at the back door.

A very short and steamy novella 🔥🔥🔥 What surprised me the most was how sweet Mark and Chloe ended up being together. There was quite a bit of emotional depth for such a short story. Mark and Chloe have an instant connection, but it actually feels pretty natural despite the circumstances under which they met. Masks was actually pretty romantic for a short erotica. Sweet and steamy, the best of both worlds!

I just love reading Evangeline Anderson's steamy stories. I never get tired of her writing.

well not expecting how this book went, if you need to get in the mood I would read this book.

Twin sisters zoe and chloe are switching jobs for one night, things take a turn for the better when chloe and who is suppose to be zoe client get rather sexy. And chloe broke the rules that zoe told her not to do. Then something happens which I am not going to spoil it. This book is a quick read I finished it in about like 20 minutes.

With a sister like that, who needs enemies? I wonder how well Zoe actually knew Mark, since they were just friends and he started out being her computer technician. I doubt she knew him well enough for that set up. And then to lie to her sister. It was a gross set up.

I would have been seriously okay if Chloe had never talked to either of them again, and that’s saying a lot.

Easy read

I know it’s fiction but the story line was just a little to out there. It had potential to be five stars but missed the mark. Characters had promise, maybe if the author had developed the story into something more than just about sex.

Well, what do you know? I thought this would traumatize me, but turns out it's a nice, sweet story after all. Makes it a little less dirty read if you ask me.

And Mark is just cute. Sweet, sensitive fellow. He and Chloe make a perfect pair.

Sweet & Spicy; Not at all what I was expecting, which turned out to be a good thing. A romantic, erotic, afternoon snack.
