Whose spotted belly is this? A Bengal cat’s spotted belly, of course! Little ones will love to see the close-up photography and try to guess which animal the furry, wet, bright, or hairy belly belongs to. Animals featured include: About the Whose Is It series: These photo-based, early learning nonfiction books use a simple question-and-answer format to provide a fun and interactive learning experience for very young readers. Readers will learn about the characteristics of several body parts of a wide variety of animals as they observe the bold text and stunning photographs.
Age: All ages Series: Coats, Wings, Butts, Horns, Scales
A delightful series with crisp photography and white backgrounds--perfect for a tantalizing guessing game. The animals aren't the usual bunch so these books introduce some unique vocabulary for all ages.
First sentence: Who has a furry belly like this? A lynx! Who has a wet belly like this? A sea turtle!
I'm not sure if Bellies or Butts was published first. But these two are good companions, and, of course, they are by the same author. This one features photographs of animal bellies. Again, a series of questions and answers.
I really enjoyed some of the photographs. I do think the answers are perhaps not quite as obvious in this one. Lynx bellies, Bengal bellies, they don't look all that different from any/every cat. Both books--both Butts and Bellies--feature a range of animals.
Wonderful photos and guessing games make this storytime fodder (and a great addition to this series of guessing books) but many of the animals would be difficult for children to guess. Bonus points for teaching kids about new animals and expanding their vocabulary but would probably save this for older kids.
The concept is great and the pictures are cute; but it's interesting that it's a board book, because the animals in question are not your typical 'cat, dog, bird' but more advanced animal names. That might be a good thing, or it might be a disappointment- just depends on the reader.
