When they start to die, Pat--a vocal opponent of scroungers and their self-entitled mindset--is the name in the frame for their downfall. Strongly suspecting that a new colleague, PC Kyle Aston, is behind the deaths, Pat comes under fire from the force, he is arrested and placed in custody. But before the police have the chance to deprive him of his liberty, he flees, devising a plan to clear his name and gain evidence to send the guilty party down. A DEADLY ENEMY What follows is a battle of wits, as mysterious men in dark vans pursue Pat and his family. And as Pat draws ever closer to revealing the truth about what's going on, an altogether different, far more shocking truth emerges that threatens the very fabric of society.

This is not your usual police procedural, all guts and gore violence. Yes it deals with crime but it's actually very funny in places.
PC Patrick is a uniformed officer in Birmingham (where the author was a policeman) He longs to deal with some real crimes, a burglary or a car theft. Instead he spends most of his time dealing with he terms the dregs of humanity, the drunks, the druggies and the dropouts. The spongers who do nothing but take more than their fair share in handouts, but give nothing back. His days- and nights- are spent ferrying drunks to the lock up, where more man hours are wasted guarding them. Or picking up used syringes that the druggies have left in the childrens play park. On his breaks he moans to whoever will listen about the teduim of these jobs. In the squad car he moans to his new partner Kyle, and while Kyle agrees he doesn't say much.
But when these lowlifes start to die, usually in the days just after an interaction with Pat, his name is put forward as a possible suspect. Pat is outraged and when they try and arrest him, he does a runner, hiding out at his (secret) girlfriend's house. He's determined to clear his name and also find out who is behind these suspicious deaths. He suspects new guy Kyle, who after a bit of sleuthing, Pat discovers drives a very nice Porsche and lives in a gated community, well beyond the means of a police constable.
No spoilers! But Pat soon comes to realise that he and his family are being followed, and that he can't trust the people he thought were lifelong friends. I didn't suspect the main culprit at all!

Fast-paced, gritty and spellbound. This crime thriller/ police procedural is difficult to put down. Written by Mark Sexton, a former police officer, sheds light on police and the tiring work they do.

Mark ease readers gently to the story’s themes, we see protagonist PC Patrick going about his duties, which largely revolve around pandering to the city’s takers, who cost the government a small fortune in state benefits.

When they start to die, Pat—a vocal opponent of scroungers and their self-entitled mindset—is the name in the frame for their downfall. Strongly suspecting that a new colleague, PC Kyle Aston, is behind the deaths, Pat comes under fire from his own force, is arrested and placed in custody. But before the police have the chance to further deprive him of his liberty, he flees, devising a plan to clear his name and gain evidence to send the guilty party down.

What follows is a battle of wits, as mysterious men in dark vans pursue him and his family. And as Pat draws ever closer to revealing the truth about what’s really going on, an altogether different, far more shocking truth emerges that threatens the very fabric of society.

I recommend this book to fans of Idris Elba’s Luther or Sherlock Holmes. It's a Goodread!😁😁

Mark Sexton’s debut book ‘Elimination’ is a compulsive storyline with profound knowledge and insights into the police service, drug and alcohol addiction and modern social issues (I had close personal and professional associations with the police service for many years). This level of inside knowledge strengthens the book’s convincing intrigue. There is also a feasible conspiracy plot which will leave you with a silver shiver of fear.
The plot is a subtle drama between the persecutors, victims and rescuers. Because the story has not been exaggerated it becomes believable (and scary). There are constant threads of suspicion (often interchangeable between the rescuer and persecutors), suspense and mistrust as well as an overriding determination to uncover truths.
Whether you are or are not a crime/thriller reader this book will certainly capture your imagination causing you to question assumptions about our legal system and social virtues.
I am recommending this to anyone who is looking for a unique accessible fictional story…which I hope becomes televised! I also hope we hear more from this gifted crime story teller.

Fantastic storyline with a great twist. The author has put so much thought into the detail which clearly shines through. PC Patrick is a very believable character and I was on the edge of my seat throughout. There will be a definite demand for a sequel. An exciting crime thriller that in this day and age could very well happen.

Very easy to read. Catches you from page 1. Mark does a great job in making a possible reality in this day and age feel authentic, with his experience in the force obviously helping a lot.
Exciting. Page turning. Smile on your face when you put it down.
Everything you need for a bit of thought provoking escapism.
Well done Mr Sexton 👏
