Nous pensions avoir tout lu de Victor Hugo. Ses vers, appris par des générations d'élèves. Ses pièces, jouées par des générations d'acteurs. Ses romans, lus par des générations de lecteurs à travers le monde. Et sans doute un grand écrivain français, qui eut droit aux honneurs nationaux, appartient à chacun. Mais nous connaissons moins le Victor Hugo intime. Nous l'avions vu en père inconsolable après la mort de sa fille en 1843, en grand-père débonnaire en 1877. Nous le découvrons ici, à trente et un ans, en amant passionné.Cette édition regroupe pour la première fois des documents en grande partie inédits, tous conservés dans des collections privées, qui témoignent des deux premières années de l'extraordinaire relation entre Victor Hugo et Juliette Drouet. Le volume comprend également un choix de poèmes et de scènes théâtrales inspirés à l'écrivain par son amante.Les deux carnets rédigés par Victor Hugo et le cahier tenu par Juliette Drouet sont intégralement reproduits en fac-similés et en transcription.

After Napoleon III seized power in 1851, French writer Victor Marie Hugo went into exile and in 1870 returned to France; his novels include The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1831) and Les Misérables (1862).

This poet, playwright, novelist, dramatist, essayist, visual artist, statesman, and perhaps the most influential, important exponent of the Romantic movement in France, campaigned for human rights. People in France regard him as one of greatest poets of that country and know him better abroad.

The English edition of this collection of exchanges, written from Juliette Drouet's perspective, is called "My Beloved Toto," the affectionate name Drouet used for Hugo (my Big Little Man, as Hugo was short in size and great in soul). Hugo called her "JuJu," for her expansive playful spirit, because it resonates with the French word that captures her both traits as well as her last name "Drouet."

Juliette, an actress and emotive person, expressed her emotions more freely than Hugo. At places her expressions are explosive, but underneath, the reader fathoms her emotions' depth by layers; they're compound emotions that are impossible to be labeled. Through hers, you also see Hugo's depth.
