नक्सल प्रभावित एक आदिवासी इलाक़े में विकास का मिथ, नक्सलियों और पुलिस-प्रशासन के बीच पिसते आदिवासी, लगातार मौत को अपने सामने देखते नाउम्मीद जीवन का अवसरवाद जो गौरक्षा की राजनीति करनेवाली एक पार्टी के लिए बहुत उर्वर ज़मीन तैयार करता है, और इन सबके बीच गाय की तस्करी करनेवाले एक गौसेवक आदिवासी नेता के टिकट पाने का जुगाड़... आदिवासी जीवन के संकटों का बयान करनेवाली मुद्रा से अनछुई यह कहानी संकटों के गतिविज्ञान में आपको गहरे ले जाती है, और मज़ा यह कि जाते हुए आपको लेखक के शोध/तजुर्बे से आतंकित/प्रभावित होने की याद भी नहीं रहती! आपको याद बस इतना रहता है कि आप धामा चेरो नामक एक गौसेवक आदिवासी नेता की कहानी सुन रहे हैं जिसने कई और गोरखधंधों के साथ-साथ गौतस्करी से अच्छी कमाई की है और जो पिछली बार विफल रहने के बाद इस बार टिकट पाने के लिए कृतसंकल्प है। अनिल यादव की बारीक निगाह और कथाभाषा उनकी ख़ास पहचान है। वे चीज़ों को जिस तरह देखते हैं, उसमें निगाहें हर अवगुंठन को पार कर जाती हैं और 'दृश्य' के भीतर का 'अदृश्य' दिखने लगता है। इसी देखने से इस कहानीकार की ख़ास अपनी कथाभाषा जन्मी है। हिन्दी के युवा/लगभग-युवा कथाकारों में सम्भवतः अनिल यादव ही हैं जिन्हें, अब, कथाभाषा से पहचाना जा सकता है। यह उन्होंने क्रमशः अर्जित की है और 'गौसेवक' में यह अपनी पकी हुई पहचान के साथ है। —संजीव कुमार

The story is set in a naxal affected tribal area. It gives a glimpse of the politics in tribal areas and how the innocent Adivasis are suffering because of the conflict between the police and the naxals.
The book begins with a reporter arriving in the area to cover a story on the naxals and Dharmaraj Chero, the Gavsevak, becomes his tour guide.
It's an interesting read that can be finished in one sitting.
There's one scene in the book where the reporter asks Dharmaraj, the man who wishes to run in the next state election, about the naxals.
"और नक्सली?"
धामा हँसा, "नक्सली कहीं आसमान में रहते हैं क्या?" उसने लड़कों की ओर हाथ घुमाया, “अरे सर, यही नक्सली हैं जो आपकी सेवा कर रहे हैं। साले खूब मौज काट रहे हैं, बस हमको एक मुसलमान लाकर नहीं दे रहे हैं।"
That last sentence wasn't written in order to scare a reader. But it did. It scared me. I guess, it's the gift of the time we are living in.
