Not the most likable characters you want to spend time with, but it's a soap opera, and that's the deal in these novels. Lots of sex and consuming of dope. I like Hirschfeld's novels and this one is as good as ACAPULCO, but not as good as FIRE ISLAND. I wrote more extensively about it on my blog The Ringer files, if your of a mind to check it out.
The cover of this book should read "Generic trashy 70s novel" because that's what it is. The characters are all good-looking and over-the-top in their appetites. There are lots of sex scenes, which are relatively tame by today's standards but more scorching in their day. There's drugs and big business deals and betrayals and a lot of other soap opera stuff. It was mildly amusing, but there was no way to get emotionally invested in any of the cardboard characters.
