Thirty-five years after the world ended, a lonely man picks his way across the ashes of America on a final mission.
Reuben Bane spent decades believing he was a force for good, preserving humanity's gene pool by hunting and eliminating deviants.
Now, he seeks redemption for his evil deeds, and revenge on the cultish Foundation. He must travel across a broken country to find a woman from the past who holds the key to the future.
After the End is the first book in a new series by Kevin Partner, veteran of the post apocalyptic science fiction genre. Set among the ashes of a destroyed world, the series brings to life a possible future world teetering on the brink between endless darkness and an uncertain future.
I write post apocalyptic science fiction both on my own account and with Mike Kraus, as well as space opera and fantasy. And one or two other bits and bobs.
Based in the south of England, I've been writing since my teens, alternating between funny and serious. In the mid 1990s, I became a regular columnist for PC Pro magazine and have written a number of business and craft books over the years.
Fiction is my first love, however - I hope you enjoy my voyages into an uncertain future.
This beginning of a new series 35 years after the apocalypse, highlights Reuben Bane, an older man who got caught up in the new state religion that granted him survival via a job as an inquisitor, that required him to locate and eliminate mutants, to purify the population. He has seen the error of his ways, now traveling alone with his black horse Lucifer, seeking to salvage his soul, doing good deeds, as he tries to avoid the church’s inquisitors, who are charged with eliminating him. This is a well-written story, with strong characters and an intriguing perspective of post-apocalyptic times, a dog-eat-dog, survival of the most cunning world. I have not read Mr. Partner’s Nightfall series, but he has provided adequate information about the Foundation that ran the world before the change to give continuity. I certainly want to read that series, based on other reviewers’ comments. I received an ARC – this review is my honest opinion. I am eager to read the next book in this series.
An excellent sequel to Kevin Partner’s Nightfall series!
I read each episode of Kevin Partner’s Nightfall series and by the end I felt like the characters were old friends, some closer friends than others, but friends non the less. Additionally, the post-apocalyptic America he envisioned became a very familiar world. So, when I was offered an Advance Reader Copy of After the End, the start to another post-apocalyptic set in the not-so-distant future of the world from Nightfall I jumped at the chance.
I’ll be honest, I was expecting the story to be a bit different – you know populated by all my friends from before. I soon learned this future story had a few characters from the earlier timeline, the focus was on the future world, how it works, how the Foundation still tried to run everything and how a few good people could exist in their current world. Not only did I find myself fully engaged in this world and the situations Mr. Partner presented, I came to find myself not wanting to put the story down, nor wanting it to end. But all good stories do end, however, in this case I know there is more to come, and I really want to follow this series because I’m fully invested in the characters and their stories. As I said I received an Advance Reader Copy and chose to provide this review.
This takes place thirty-five years after the end of the Nightfall series, which was also a very good series. It is not really necessary to have read the Nightfall series prior to starting this book, but it does help fill in some information from the start of the disaster. It was also nice to see some characters that were still around from Nightfall. This book was an interesting take on how humans would struggle to rebuild after the deaths of most of the human race, and while the astronomical phenomenon still continued in their tmie. While I was disappointed as to how much a religion would hold sway in this new world, I suppose it would be very possible. I always like a redemption arc and this is a good one. There were some editing issues and in particular, a very glaring one where the main character's name kept switching from Reuben to Rueben and back and forth. That really should have been caught by a mediocre proofreader. Despite that, this seems to be a good start to a series and I look forward to book 2.
Set a generation ahead, in a post-Apocalyptic dystopian potentiality, Kevin Partner's Future's Fall series opens with After The End.
Reuben Bane is a former Foundation cult enforcer, but following a 'wake up call' has now turned vigilante, in a desperate attempt to find the woman who holds the key to saving the remains of the fast-dying world. Can he make it through the trials and dangers? Will he trust in the right people - or go it alone?
To find out, grab a copy of After The End by the amazing author Kevin Partner today!
After the End is the first in the new series by the very talented author Kevin Partner! Kevin is one of my top 5 favorite authors and I highly recommend all of his works. The protagonist has come full circle in his acceptance of all he’s been led to believe in this unusual tale of his search for redemption from past mistakes. It’s full of action and surprises. Now, I’m anxiously awaiting book 2.
Disclaimer: I received this ARC from the author and this is my honest and freely given opinion.
Life as we know it ended 30-some years ago, and America has a new landscape courtesy of radiation storms. An intriguing view of how life has changed and survival becomes tricky. As The characters move society forward, you wonder of it is truly forward, or is it moving backward; mutants, religious leaders and regular folks, trying to prosper, but have they lost their humanity in the process. I enjoyed the storyline and character development and am looking forward to seeing what their future brings. On to the next in series
Definitely one of the best "after the apocalypse" series. Great characters and credible science paired with realistic sociology. I particularly like the way the principal narrative arcs pay homage to one of the great classic science fiction writers, John Wyndham.
The cataclysm parallels that of Day of the Triffids and the fundamentalist war against mutants reflects that of The Chrysalis.
After The End is an example of all the evil humanity is capable of. There are some goodness to be found but I think greed and a sense of superiority does it’s best to stamp out any decent folk. A riveting read from start to finish!
An amazing Post Apocalyptic story, 35 years after the last series. Reuben an older man is a survivor. He survived only because he was helping to get rid of mutants. He realizes his errors and tries to mend his ways. Can’t wait to read the next book to get involved with more intrigue.
This is an interesting, second series in this solar flare, end of the world adventure! Some of the same characters but set in the future of the time line so a completely different set of circumstances! Good stuff! I will look forward to the next part of this story!
Really gripping, twisty and fun to read! This story is set 35 years after the last series, so can be read alone without having read the previous series, although anyone who read those will be as fascinated as I was to see where the author has taken the story. I found that really interesting, with some old characters and some new. What does happen after the apocalypse - as in most of these tales, it is about people and behaviour. And this author seems to understand that well, writing well developed and engrossing characters, often flawed and neither good nor bad, although obviously there are some who are very bad indeed! There is a very nice take on religion becoming even more extreme in a post-apocalyptic society, again nothing new to those who read Atwood many years ago, but with a new and scary twist that I think few of us would tolerate, yet you can see how in those circumstances could be sold as a good idea. Rather horrid and creepy, yet definitely plausible. Certainly very good writing, and I am fascinated to see how this develops.
