Alien Redemption by Gloria Oliver is a fascinating deep space novel about a woman with a past that haunts her and has made her a pariah amongst those around her, so she tries to disguise herself in the hopes of being able to slip under the radar of anyone who may know her so that she can get a job. What she's not prepared for is for the captain of the ship she applies to recognize her and then proceed to blackmail her into his service. The path ahead is fraught with dangers, but what choice does she have if she wants to stay alive and keep her secrets?
Alien Redemption is the first book that I have read by Gloria Oliver and this book truly fascinated me. The author gives me the main character with a hidden past, and a desire to redeem herself for those mistakes. My curiosity is immediately piqued as I want to learn more about what happened, but then the author hands me an unscrupulous captain who shows that he's not above doing shady things to his own crew if they so much as displease him in the slightest. My emotions are brought to the forefront constantly throughout this book. My curiosity towards Claudia's past, then my anger and disgust towards the Captain at how low he will go and how he truly views those who are aboard his ship. Like Claudia, I thought that my disgust and disdain for him could not go any lower, but the author proves us both wrong when they come across the mysterious planet with the unique alien beings.
I was absolutely delighted with the amount of detail that the author gives me concerning the planet and then the sentient alien beings themselves. I could picture their vivid colors in my mind, and my heart just grew fit to burst for them as Claudia goes about trying to do her best by and for them, despite the contemptible demands of the captain. I feel for Claudia as she goes about doing what she can and trying to find a way out of the dilemma that she has found herself in. I couldn't help but smile at some of the interactions that she has with some of the aliens as well.
There honestly isn't much that I can complain about concerning this book. The author has written it very well and knows how to pull readers deeper into the storyline as they go along. While I truly despise the captain himself there is always that one character in a story that you have to hate and let me tell you...he fits the bill perfectly.
I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. I look forward to reading more of this author's work in the future as she has truly proven that she has a way with words and painting a vivid picture. If you enjoy science fiction novels with the discovery of new sentient beings and the question of morals then this is a good book to pick up. I would recommend this book for those who are 17+ as it does contain some sexual references.

Alien Redemption by Gloria Oliver is a sci fi story set in deep space. I have only read one other book that Gloria has written, and I enjoyed it immensely as I did with this book. Emotions run high in this story making it feel like you have run a marathon.
Gloria’s has once again cleverly woven together complex threads in a multi layered story. Her world-building is done well, and the plot is intriguing in a story that has something for everyone that likes a good sci fi story.
With a new identity, intelligent humanoid species, first contact, uncharted planets, blackmail, shocking betrayal, and sinister plots Gloria has written a tale where the pages keep turning desperate to find out how it will end.
The story is fast paced, and action packed and full of suspense, tension, frustration, fear, desperation, aliens, secrets, mystery and more.
Gloria’s narrative and a few twists and turns makes it easy to become intrigued with the characters and their journey.
Claudia is overqualified and needs a new start in life but that new start doesn’t turn out how she thought it would. Things go from bad to worse and she wonders just what she has gotten herself into.
I look forward to reading more.

Claudia unhappily was meeting a prospective employer at the seedy Turbic Station bar, dark inside and bad-smelling from smoke and bodies. She was low on money and looking for a new start as a medical officer on a merchant ship in the Fringes. She had few other options since she could not risk them doing a background check on her and her ID was fake. So a job on a ship was her best chance of success. She was there to meet Captain Ricardo Bennet and found a man who rudely did all he could to ignore her. She introduced herself as Aya Maynard. He judged her as educated, entitled, and moral – as if it were a dirty word. Then he told her he knew who she was and if she tried to leave, he would yell out her name for all to hear! Knowing she was overqualified for his ship job, making her work for him would mean he was getting a great bargain, so he blackmailed her into taking the job.

Seeing the MedBay for the first time made Claudia feel she had hit rock-bottom. Equipment was ancient, at least 30 years out of date. Tape covered all the cracked plastic on the surfaces, and the room smelled stale. She fixed what equipment she could by running their diagnostic programs. Her first patient was the Engineer Dubrai who fixed the examination table that wasn’t working before she got to ask him about his ailment. He had a calcium buildup in his joints which medication could easily fix. The captain even commented that he saw him later dancing around the room! Later when one of the crew came at Claudia with a knife to make her open the drug cabinets, the Captain caught him and severely beat him. Claudia was not allowed to treat him, and the Captain took bets with the officers on whether the man would survive the night! His disappointment the next day was only that the man caused his own death after they left port, so the Captain would be short a crew member!

Because Captain Bennet has no morals and a bad temper, Claudia continued to avoid him whenever possible. Talk of a secret mission starts, and they end up in an uncharted system in the Fringes. There they find intelligent life which the captain plans to use to his own advantage, putting the sentient Avians they discovered into servitude. Can Claudia stop him from exploiting the new species? Or will she be putting her own life into further danger instead?

This was an interesting story, first raising the reader’s curiosity about whatever Claudia did that let the Captain blackmail her. Then throughout the rest of the pages, the author slowly built up the reprehensible Captain by showing the reader all the cruelty he freely dispensed on others. Keeping the reader’s emotions in turmoil was very effective in setting the tone and making it obvious how far the Captain would go to get his way and how little he cared about even his own crew – so a new species would not generate any kindness either. The story was done well. Grab your copy and see whether Claudia will get involved and if anyone will back her up if she does. Be ready for the excitement!

I was surprised by this book. It was the first alien book that I’ve read, and I really enjoyed it. It keeps you guessing about who you can trust and what will happen. The world was well described and easy to picture. The aliens were interesting and mysterious. I definitely recommend.

Claudia Zimmerman is a doctor, or at least she used to be before she was thrust out of her profession after being blamed for something which wasn't her fault, all thanks to her employer wanting to save face rather than admit a mistake. The main drawback to this is that it has meant she has had to stay in hiding under an assumed name and not spending long periods in any one place.

As part of her disgraced status, she finds a job on a ship for medical personnel and decides it might be her only way off of the station she is currently in and escape her woes, however, that was not to be and instead she finds that the captain knows exactly who she is and what she has done, or at least been railroaded for. She is in shock and has no idea how to respond until the captain decides to go in for a little blackmail and threatens to turn her in if she doesn't join his crew and so reluctantly, she does exactly that.

As the days and weeks pass, Claudia becomes more used to her situation and her role, as well as the challenges which come with it, including and almost permanent state of stress and anxiety about what the captain will threaten her with next, but she does her job well and looks after the crew. Normally, she isn't allowed off the ship while they are on jobs, but one day, she is requested, and she knows full well that what she is about to do is something she will have qualms about. It turns out she is right, and her assignment is distasteful and downright abhorrent, especially when it turns out that the reason she is there, is for her to run checks on a new, sentient and humanoid species for a very specific purpose.

The more time she spends with these individuals, the more she comes to feelings of protectiveness and is loath to let the captains plan come to fruition, but will she be able to do that and stay alive while looking after these beautiful, birdlike creatures, or will she end up out of her depth? This is an epic sci-fi adventure full of plots, secrets, lies and revelations as one woman seeks to protect a new species from a less that positive fate while battling her internal mechanisms and biases, which spins a story full of unpredictability and emotional ups and downs throughout.

“All Claudia wanted to do was escape the mistakes of the past and start over. But when she answers an ad for a medical officer on a merchant ship in the Fringes, the captain recognizes her and blackmails her into taking the job. She finds out that not only can Captain Bennet not pass up a bargain, neither will he allow morals to hold him back from climbing the power ladder at the borders of the Dominion. Can Claudia stop the impending exploitation of a newly discovered sentient species all on her own?”
Alien Redemption by Gloria Oliver is a great, twisty, sci-fi adventure story with plenty of suspense, tension, drama, action, secrets, mystery, agendas/plots, high stakes, blackmail, betrayal, intrigue, emotion, discovery, challenges, space travel, new beginnings, and aliens.
I was pulled into the story right from the beginning- reading the book in one sitting as I really needed to know how things would play out. There were twisty moments where I wasn’t sure where the story was headed, but in a great way- it had me avidly reading to find out what would happen next. I was invested in Claudia (‘Z’) right from the get-go, I really felt for her and the circumstances she found herself in- and was rooting for her the whole way through (and her new ‘friends’). Some of the characters made me angry- Captain Bennet in particular, and spent a considerable amount of time plotting Claudia’s revenge along the way. All in all- this turned out to be an intriguing and engrossing sci-fi story…
Looking forward to whatever Ms. Oliver does next- hopefully more of ‘The Discoveries of Julia Xero’ series- but I know whatever she does will make for a fantastic read!
Happy Reading…

Thank you, Gloria Oliver!

Claudia Zimmerman is a former medical researcher who was blamed by her employers in a very public arena. She is now blacklisted amongst both her peers and, well...everyone else, too. Her funds are running low, she's feeling desperate, and she doesn't know what else to do besides become someone else. So, Claudia becomes Aya and applies for a medical job aboard a merchant vessel. She expects to get the job without trouble, and is shocked to find the captain of the vessel recognizes her and blackmails her into joining the crew.

Captain Bennet assigns her to the medical bay of his dilapidated ship, and she tries to stay out of his way as his temper and behavior is absolutely atrocious - a cruel and dangerous man. He punishes crew members on a whim. Before she knows it, Claudia is assigned to an mission aboard an uncharted planet where they discover an intelligent avian species. She is excited to work with them and then discovers that Captain Bennet has plans to utilize the new species as servants, and Claudia has seen up close and personal just how he treats those around him. She can't stand the idea of the Avians being subjected to his brutal abuse and desires to save them, even though it will bring her the attention she's been trying hard to avoid.

There is assault in this book, and a lot of terrible treatment. Some people are likely sensitive to some of the things described. SciFi novels aren't usually my "thing", and it was difficult to get through the assault, but this book did draw me in and have me rooting for Claudia. I was often on the edge of my seat and bouncing between emotions. Will Claudia keep herself and the Avians safe, or will Captain Bennet beat his way to the top?

This was a very gripping sci fi read. The author has a great talent for twisting the story that keeps the reader guessing. The authors detail was another thing I loved as it really brought the story to life. I felt like I was seeing and witnessing everything the characters were.
The first thing that gripped me was the story of Claudia Zimmerman. What had she done or been accused of that has led her to the dark depths she finds herself in now. When the captain of the ship blackmails her into working for him else he will reveal what she is running from, that was where I was completely gripped.. I wanted to know what she was running from.

When she joins the crew on the ship she is horrified at how ancient the medbay is and comes to a realisation quickly that the captain is a hard and ruthless man. Her plan is to do her job and stay away from him and off his rador.
But that doesn't last long when she is sent onto a unchartered planet and they find a new species. Claudia is so happy and can't wait to learn all about them that is until she realises the captain plans on using them as slaves.

Knowing how he treats his crew and people she is determined for this new species to not meet the same fate but by standing in the captain's way she is opening herself up to danger.

Can she save herself and her new friends? Or will the Captain destroy them all?

This story is fast paced and really gripping with twists and turns you don't see coming. I don't normally enjoy sci fi reads however this one really had me hooked and I couldn't put it down

Overall, "Alien Redemption" by Gloria Oliver is a gripping science fiction novel that kept me engaged with its empathetic heroine, clever twists and turns, and cosmic mysteries. I normally don't read a lot of sci fi, but enjoyed this one.

The story follows Claudia Zimmerman, a disgraced medical researcher who survives behind a mask after being set up for a career-destroying fall by her employers. Seeking a fresh start, Claudia hides her true identity and hopes to secure a job on a merchant vessel. However, her plans take a turn when she is recognized and threatened with blackmail by the ship's captain, forcing her to reluctantly join the crew.

One of the strengths of the novel is its well-developed protagonist. Claudia is a complex and empathetic character, and readers will find themselves rooting for her from the beginning. Her growth throughout the story is realistic and relatable, and her determination to do what is right in the face of adversity adds depth to the narrative.

The plot is full of unexpected twists and turns, and kept me on my toes throughout. The writing style is smooth and descriptive, allowing me to easily visualize the settings. The dialogue is natural and helps to bring the characters to life. Additionally, the author's attention to detail is evident, creating a rich and vivid world for readers to explore.

Claudia is in a bad spot. Her employers set her up for a fall and she's been disgraced from the medical community. She obtains a fake identity and tries to take a medical officer spot on a ship but the captain knows exactly who she is and bullies her onto his ship or he will expose who she really is. When the captain asks her to go down to the surface on a unknown planet and what she finds takes her breath away, intelligent life!
The captain makes a trade for several of the avian species to come back to earth but quickly Claudia finds out the captains sinister intentions with this brand new species and though it is horrifying what they have planned for this new species Claudia has no choice but to listen to her captain so she finds herself protecting the species as best she can.
Once they get back to earth things amplify and Claudia finds herself traded to the admiral to stay with the birds to be sure they complete their "duties".
Claudia learns much about the species and continues to be shocked by them the more she learns, but the disturbing truth within the admirals plan leaves Claudia scrambling to find a way to help her Avian friends. Can she save her charges in time? A MUST READ!!!

To start with - I don't love science fiction and wasn't too sure about reading this book. But, I'm glad I spend some time with it. It was pleasantly surprising. "Alien Redemption" by Gloria Oliver is a science fiction novel that takes readers on a thrilling journey through space and introduces them to the resilient and endearing character, Claudia. The author's skillful storytelling weaves together a fast-paced story filled with drama, twists, and turns that will keep scifi lovers hooked until the last page.

Claudia, the main character, faces adversity after being wrongly implicated by her deceitful employers. As she strives to rebuild her life, readers empathize with her struggles and root for her redemption. She is what kept me reading.

The author does a great job of building a picture of a mysterious planet and its unique sentient alien beings. Her attention to detail brings the vivid colors and intricacies of the aliens to life. The contrast between Claudia's genuine efforts to help the aliens and the captain's contemptible actions adds depth to the narrative, eliciting a range of emotions from readers.

Alien Redemption by Gloria Oliver. This is a great sci fi adventure read about a girl named Claudia who has been judged by her past. The people around her shun her so she disguises herself. She thought she had a good cover but when she applies for a job the Captain of the ship recognizes her and uses that information to blackmail her. The Captain knew she was overqualified so that's why he blackmailed her. Claudia has to fight the crew and she can never really rest because she never knows when someone is going to try to kill her. She can't trust anyone so she feels completely alone. The Captain is so dirty and she knows its in her best interest to avoid him at all costs. When talks of a secret mission start and they end up in an unchartered system called the Fringes and they find intelligent life which the Captain plans to use for his benefit. Can Claudia stop him from making the new life species he's found be servants for the rest of their lives? Read this great sci fi read to find out!

Alien Redemption is a science fiction novel by Gloria Oliver. The story unfolds around Claudia, also known as Dr. Z, who is trying to find a way to make a living while hiding from her past under a false identity. Her options are limited, as avoiding a background check is crutial. An opportunity to become a medic on a merchant ship is in front of her, however the captain claims to know who she is and essentially blackmails her into taking the position. And Captain Bennett's antics do not seem to end there. The Captain seems to enjoy showing the lengths his cruelty can extend to when they happen across an Avian race on a secret mission. How far will he go, and what can Claudia do to protect these beautiful creatures?

I really enjoyed the entire book! The pages turned and turned. I stayed intrigued and guessing. The character and plot development was spot-on! I definitely recommend for sci-fi fans who love a fast, but no less interesting read.

This was my first book by Gloria Oliver and it did not disappointment! I’m not normally a sci-fi fan, but the blurb intrigued me so I gave it a shot. The main character, Claudia, has a secret past that she is trying to put behind her so she can move on with her life and get a new job. She finally finds one and her boss, Bennett, is constantly holding her past over head to get her to do whatever he wants. These are usually not things she wants to do, but she is terrified of her past getting out. From the get go she feels like an outsider and wants to fit in. She is then brought on a mission. I don’t want to spoil the book so you can enjoy it as much as I did. Can’t wait to read more by Ms Gloria!

This was not the first book I've read from Gloria Oliver, so I knew that this book would not disappoint, and I was right! Alien Redemption is the story of Claudia (Dr. Z) who is living under a false identity after being blacklisted from the medical community by a set-up from her employers. Using her new identity, she takes a spot as a medical officer on a ship, but unfortunately the ship's captain knows exactly who she is and blackmails her to stay on the ship. He then forces her to go to the surface of an unknown planet where she is pleased to find intelligent life! Her captain has some pretty awful intentions for this new species, though, and Claudia must do all she can to help protect these innocent lives! Will she succeed? You'll have to read it and find out!

The author does a wonderful job of world and character building. I was able to connect with Claudia, who is trying to find a way to get past a mistake, but finds herself in a difficult situation. The author did an amazing job of weaving together a fantastic sci fi novel set in space with aliens, that will keep you reading until the last page. I absolutely adored Claudia, a hardworking heroine, who had a terrible hand dealt to her when she was set up to take the fall for her awful employers. She is working to rebuild her life, but things keep going wrong for her. It’s a well written book that is fast paced, action packed with drama, twists and turns. Reading Alien Redemption by Gloria Oliver, I wasn't entirely sure what to Expect but man! I was pleasantly surprised. This story got me from the first couple pages. although it does have some parts some readers could find hard to read(trigger warning). Other than that it was a fantastic read. I enjoy reading alien style books( I mean who doesn’t love them) so this author's take had me interested til the end. Claudia is one strong lead female character, and Captain Bennet can go disappear please. I look forward to reading more books from Gloria Oliver.

Alien Redemption is a Sci-Fi Adventure that I wasn’t real sure what to expect going in but once I got started reading it was hard to put down. This is a fairly new author to me and I’m definitely going to check out what other books they have written. This Sci-Fi is packed with action, mystery, suspense, aliens and so much more. What would you do if you if your fresh start at a new life doesn’t work out how you wanted it to? What if the choices you make go from not so bad to way worse? I highly recommend reading this book to find out what happens next . I look forward to reading more from this Author.

Audiobook: I enjoyed this story a lot as I thought it was entertaining. I admired the worldbuilding and the created alien race, as the descriptive phrases painted vivid pictures within my imagination. I liked the character arc of the protagonist. I appreciated the underlying themes which spread throughout the tale, and I found some of the ideas presented to be thought-provoking. I wasn't a fan of Julia Mantione's narration. I thought her diction was clear; however, during many segments of the narrative her voice lacked expressiveness. I was given a copy of the audiobook. I volunteered, without financial gain, to leave this review which included my honest opinions regarding this tale.

I could not put Alien Redemption down! I thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend it as a great First Contact novel. The characters showcase some of the worst and best of human behavior: greed, extortion, exploitation, and violence, but also courage in a hopeless situation, friendship, and endless compassion. The aliens and the alien world are finely crafted, as well as the story line which has many twists and turns. I enjoyed the main character and her work as a doctor- a very believable character. If you enjoy First Contact novels, good over coming evil, and amazing new aliens you will enjoy this book immensely.

I found this story to be absolutely fascinating. Claudia has a past and is trying to stay on the down-low. She applies for the only job she can and winds up on ship of low-lifes, except for the first mate. The captain is a real piece of work. I loved how Claudia worked to redeem herself, which wasn't easy on that ship. Claudia turned out to be a strong character who just wanted to do what's right. I have to applaud her. It's a good book that had me engaged right from the start. There's a lot of action, a bit of romance, and some suspense. It's one I recommend.

This book was so much better than I thought it would be when I started reading, and I got into it straight away. I thought the story was really interesting and had a lot about it. The start really made me sit up and pay attention and after that I could not wait to see where the story would go.
I loved the main character as well. She has such a dark past that she is trying to get away from, yet her strength and fight is obvious to see. For me, she definitely added so much more to the story. This is a fantastic story that I really enjoyed and would highly recommend.

I read a previous book by this author, but I loved this one even more! I’m a huge fan of the sci-fi genre which unfortunately means I find many books that seem to follow the same pattern. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this author created a magnificent adventure with detailed characters that I was immediately fully invested in. The single thing I didn’t like about this book was the cover. I almost didn’t pick it up because something put me off, but I’m glad I took the chance anyway. I highly recommend choosing this for your next read if you love sci-fi adventures!!

Alien Redemption by Gloria Oliver- 5 out of 5 stars

An interesting Sci-Fi deep space novel. Trigger Warning, there are parts in the novel that can be very triggering! A very well written second book from this author. It was suspenseful, edgy, fast-paced but well rounded, dare I say, it was a satisfying read. I will honestly say that I did not expect much going into this book but I am glad that I gave it a chance and stuck through the hard parts. I highly recommend this book!
