Ex-Army Ranger Steve Wolf is wondering just that after receiving a desperate call home from his mother. His younger brother, Jimmy, is in trouble.
As Wolf heads back to North Carolina to set things straight, he realizes that things have changed—and not for the better. The name of the town is different, a recycling plant has replaced the old textile factory, and a new off-reservation Indian casino is the main attraction. To top it off, the bitter stench of a burgeoning crystal meth problem is hanging over the area, and Wolf’s brother is heavily involved in the distribution process.
Jimmy and his friends have also secretly concocted a dangerous plan to rip off a violent drug kingpin. And Wolf’s best friend and mentor, Jim McNamara, is working down by the Texas/Mexico border and is unable to offer his expertise.
Standing alone, Wolf is forced to confront the ghosts from his past as well as a host of new and vicious adversaries, and—in a last-ditch battle to save his brother—Wolf races against a ticking clock to avert the impending carnage from destroying the only family he has left.
Ex-military Ranger Steve Wolf finds himself in the unenviable position of a recent incarceration with nothing to his name. Having barely made it out of prison he finds a friend from years ago (or should I say, an old friend don't him) who's willing to give him a hand up. This association is rife with pitfalls and deception and involves going into Mexico to bring back a bail skipper. That alone is enough to assure some problems that Wolf doesn't want or need. The thrills and twists abound.
This is a fast-paced novel with some pretty rough characters. When Steve Wolf, a former Army Ranger, crosses paths with a private military group in Baghdad and innocent civilians die, he goes to jail. When he gets out, an old friend asks him to try working with him as a bounty hunter. One case takes them to Mexico, where a lot of things feel very wrong to Steve; they are very wrong. The end will leave the reader reaching to order the next book in the series!
This is an extremely well written book. The author writes a compelling story that rings with truth. His action sequences are believable and not over the top. The characters are developed as the story unfolds and done so with a very readable style. I enjoyed this book and am off to start book II.
So this book was only okay. I’ve read many stories about ex operators turned bounty hunters and I cannot recall one being so unsure of himself such as Wolf. Not sure if I’ll read the next book in the series.
Good story if you could get past the poor editing including extra words and just poor language skills. Mexico is no place for American bounty hunters and this story definitely proves that.
